My Secret Terrius: Episodes 13-14

Our spy’s lies don’t add up and he can’t seem to explain without exposing his operation. A good spy would cut ties while the opportunity is there, and yet the relationships our hero has grown with his neighbors are something he’s not willing to let go of just yet. All the while, as the King’s Bag operation gets closer to their villain, someone else is on the trail of the King’s Bag spies.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

In Ae-rin’s apartment, Bon turns to leave after the awkward gift exchange, but Ae-rin calls out the name she’s learned from Yong-tae, Wang Jeong-nam, and she gasps as he turns to answer. As if that isn’t damning enough, Bon’s phone begins to ring, displaying Ji-yeon’s name, and Ae-rin swipes to listen. Ji-yeon demands to know why Bon hasn’t arrived yet.

Ae-rin wants the truth, and it’s the one thing that Bon can’t give her. He says that he did lie, but that the reason is too complicated and would do her no good to know. But he promises that his name is really Kim Bon.

Ae-rin tells him to leave her house, and he does so with downcast eyes.

Bon retreats to King’s Bag and relays the events to Ji-yeon. Ji-yeon reminds him of Poland and tells him not to get involved with his contacts. Bon says that it’s not that easy, and Ji-yeon storms away.

The mention of Poland sends Bon’s thoughts back to Candy, memories of the way their relationship started and grew, and then ended in her death.

When Bon returns home, he’s surrounded by memories of Ae-rin and her kids. It seems that the fish were just the first step. As the days have passed, more and more toys and children’s books have moved in to clutter his formerly austere home. The kids wanted to see him more and more, and it’s obvious that he enjoyed their presence as well. He lies down on the play mats in the darkened room.

Ji-yeon has taken her frustrations straight to the bar, but it turns out she’s a lightweight. She orders another three rounds, already pretty tipsy, but Do-woo turns up to be her knight in shining armor.

As Do-woo gives Ji-yeon a drunken piggyback ride home, she refers to him as Bon, and demands to hear that she’s prettier than Ae-rin. Do-woo declares her obviously the prettiest, though he gets no credit for it.

It’s five in the morning, and Ae-rin is contemplative on her couch. She listens at her door, but Bon never heads out for his daily run. Ae-rin notes that this is the first time he’s ever abandoned his routine.

Later, she meets Eun-ha outside and mentions that she needs to find a new babysitter. Eun-ha asks if Bon has quit, and Ae-rin nods, not eager to share the details. Eun-ha is, of course, suspicious.

Ji-yeon is feeling a little hungover when she makes it in to King’s Bag, but she smiles gratefully when she finds a coffee left for her by Do-woo. She calls to thank him, but when he asks what she’s thanking him for, she says obviously the coffee.

Ae-rin arrives at work and sits down with Ji-yeon to discuss the new information. Ae-rin asks Ji-yeon what Bon’s real name is, and Ji-yeon’s answer is Wang Jeong-nam. Of all the things that Bon refused to answer Ae-rin, the one thing he swore to was that his name was truly Kim Bon.

Ji-yeon asks if Ae-rin intends to quit, now that she knows the truth.

The neighborhood parents are gathered at their book cafe to discuss the new rift between Ae-rin and Bon. An interloper to the usual KIS group takes it to an extreme, and suggests that Ae-rin and Bon have been seeing each other for a while, and that Ae-rin offed her own husband to run away with Bon.

While the women gasp, scandalized, Sang-ryul comes to Bon’s defense and says that Bon is just a good friend and trustworthy sitter.

Ji-yeon heads to a cafe to relay her operations progress to Director Shim. The director lets her know that Chief Kwon has been spying, something Ji-yeon already knows. Ji-yeon tells Director Shim about J International and the bag given to the new chief of security. Ji-yeon smiles at her director’s praise.

Speaking of Chief Kwon, after their initial false start, her team has finally managed to track Ae-rin down. Not through NIS channels, but rather Eun-ha’s Instagram photos from their photoshoot at King’s Bag.

Ae-rin calls her friends in to the store and asks them to mind the store while she runs an errand (that’s not how jobs work, but okay…) as Ae-rin can’t wait a moment longer and meets with Bon.

Ae-rin tells him that she thought long and hard about it, but after what Ji-yeon told her, she no longer wants Bon as her sitter. Bon nods, though his face is stricken, and tells her that he’s grateful for all the times that the twins made him laugh.

The Instagram photos lead Chief Kwon to Ae-rin’s neighborhood and directly to King’s Bag. But Ae-rin’s not in, so Chief Kwon spends some time interrogating, er, talking to Ae-rin’s friends.

As Bon leaves the cafe, he notes Yong-tae’s car in the neighborhood. In the car, Yong-tae meets with his mysterious High Priestess contact and hands off something to her. As she exits, her red heels attract Bon’s attention.

But before Bon can follow her, Yong-tae calls out in his haughty way. He lets Bon know that he was the one who ran the background check and informed Ae-rin of his name and past. Yong-tae flashes a business card and tells Bon that they have no issue with hiring former criminals at J International if he’s interested.

Yong-tae takes a step back as Bon steps forward aggressively, but Bon just grabs the business card and says that he’ll definitely be in contact.

As he drives away, Yong-tae recalls that Ae-rin called this man Kim Bon, and wonders if that’s really his name.

Likewise, Bon wonders if Yong-tae is really who he pretends to be, as he places the business card in a zip lock bag.

Back at King’s Bag, the KIS members are giving up details about Ae-rin’s dead husband and work history left and right. Ae-rin returns moments before Sang-ryul almost says Bon’s name, thank goodness (but not before Sang-ryul declares her sitter his very best friend, hehe).

Eun-ha demands a business card from Chief Kwon before they will leave, and so Chief Kwon provides a card as Kim Tae-hee of Rose L.

While that’s going down at the store, Do-woo stakes out J International. After watching Yong-tae’s driver lock up, Do-woo disables the security cameras and plugs in to hack the security code on the door.

But the driver gets instructions to return to the office, and he spots Do-woo at the door. Do-woo runs for it and makes it to the elevator before the long-limbed driver can catch up.

Yong-tae knows something is up, but when his driver suggests calling Yong-tae’s boss, Yong-tae tells him not to get any crazy ideas. Left alone in his office, Yong-tae wonders who is on to them.

EPISODE 14

Sang-ryul is in charge of picking up the twins now that Bon is no longer their sitter. Joon-Joon are disappointed that their trusty Bon isn’t there for them, so they act out with a little mischief and douse poor Sang-ryul’s son’s head with soap.

Sang-ryul sends the twins out to the living room while he cleans up his son, and Joon-hee gets a brilliant idea.

Bon is working on his murder board, drawing more connections that all lead to Yong-tae, when he’s interrupted by the doorbell. When he peeks out, gun in hand, there’s no one there.

But knocks follow, and then a plaintive, “Mister…” It’s the Joon-Joon twins on the other side, too short to appear through the door spy hole.

Bon lets them in and fills them up with ice cream. The twins worry that it’s their behavior that has driven Bon away from them. Bon promises that’s not the case.

Joon-hee hands over a gift they made for him. It’s a drawing of him, with a triangle nose and giant ears, teehee. Bon smiles, and Joon-hee puts it up on his fridge.

Sang-ryul discovers the apartment is empty and worries that the twins have been kidnapped again. Thankfully, Bon calls to let him know where the twins have snuck off to.

Sang-ryul joins Bon and the kids in Bon’s apartment, and the scattered toys seem to confirm the rumors of Ae-rin and Bon’s long-running relationship.

Sang-ryul tells Bon about the rumor, and how he stood up for him. Bon grasps Sang-ryul’s hand affectionately to thank him, and Sang-ryul leans on his hand to soak in the moment, ha.

Sang-ryul also lets slip that a fancy chairwoman came to the store to recruit Ae-rin. He describes Chief Kwon, and when he drops the name she gave everyone, Bon immediately recognizes it as Chief Kwon’s alias.

At King’s Bag, Chief Kwon can’t help but think that there are way too many real shoppers here for this to be a fake store. Ae-rin finally rejoins her and asks if she’d like to continue their conversation.

Meanwhile, Bon is running like the action hero he is to the rescue. Do-woo beats him there and spots Chief Kwon in the window. He calls Ji-yeon to warn her about Chief Kwon.

Inside, Ae-rin asks about the supposed job offer Chief Kwon has for her, since she’s likely going to quit King’s Bag soon. Chief Kwon squirms out with a fake phone call and leaves, Ae-rin trailing behind her to thank her for the opportunity.

Ae-rin spots Bon hiding in the bushes as she walks the chief out. She tries to follow him, but loses him around the building. As Do-woo rushes into the store, Ae-rin is there to catch him on the phone, speaking with Bon who ducked into the secret headquarters via another secret entrance. Do-woo sends Ae-rin home, and while Ae-rin nods, it’s clear she knows something is up.

She explores the spot where Bon disappeared, and while there, she finds the building’s electricity bill. The bill is crazy high, and as a frugal parent, Ae-rin knows this is way too much for just the store.

Ae-rin talks out her concerns to Eun-ha over a meal. Eun-ha shares her suspicions over Chief Kwon as well. She says that she called the number on the woman’s card, and it didn’t work, and she can’t find any information about the company online.

Chief Kwon looks at the report her team wrote up for her with the new info they gathered about Ae-rin. Of particular interest is the way that her husband died.

At home, the twins beg for Bon to be their sitter again as Ae-rin tucks them into bed. When Ae-rin asks them if they think Bon is a good person, they of course chorus that he’s certainly a good guy.

Ae-rin sits to think through what she’s seen, all the strange behavior and Bon’s reaction to the toy gun. She wonders if he responded that way because he’s actually very comfortable with guns and considers the possibilities—starting at cop with Bon in uniform, turning to hitman with Bon dressed like he’s in The Professional, and finally landing on NIS agent as she imagines Kim Bon(d).

Bon and the NIS agents rally to discuss Chief Kwon’s moves and her interest in Ae-rin. While they worry about Ae-rin, Ae-rin continues to assemble the pieces, and wonders if Do-woo was on the phone with Bon earlier, and if they’re a team.

Bon hands over the business card to those team members to run Yong-tae’s fingerprints. Bon says that he thinks Yong-tae is living a secret life, much like himself. Do-woo confesses to his botched attempt to break into J International, and Bon and Ji-yeon are both furious with him about it.

Do-woo says that he wanted to end the operation quickly by obtaining the list of names that Ae-rin had seen on Yong-tae’s computer. Bon says angrily that he’s been avoiding that route because he knows it would put Ae-rin in danger if that’s how Yong-tae is taken down. Ji-yeon looks oddly affected by at Bon’s anger and concern for Ae-rin.

As to Do-woo’s reasons? He recalls the night before, as he escorted the drunken Ji-yeon home. In the cab, she mumbled to him that she hoped they could end the operation quickly and run someplace far away together, away from Bon.

Do-woo says that he didn’t make it inside, so perhaps they’ll just think it was a regular break-in. Ji-yeon asks if he left any trace, and Do-woo says that he killed the security cameras in the hall.

And while that’s true, he didn’t kill the cameras in the elevator, and now Yong-tae reviews that footage in his office. He’s only got a shot of Do-woo’s back, but he swears that he recognizes him from somewhere.

Yong-tae receives a call from the mysterious boss, and he confirms that he gave the High Priestess contact what she wanted. Yong-tae asks what it was for, and the boss chastises him for asking questions all of a sudden. As he hangs up, Yong-tae’s eyes go to the hourglass on his desk, and he flips it over, letting the sand run.

The High Priestess is on the move and enters a building. She observes a man in a hospital bed from outside the room. She taps the panel beside the door, and gas floods the room. The man begins to struggle, and then blood spurts from his mouth as he dies.

Ae-rin is back at the shop to satisfy her suspicions. Earlier, she used her neighbor’s favorite trick and placed tape on the doors. She sees now that the tape hasn’t been disturbed, and knows that there must be a secret area of the shop.

Ae-rin uses her keys to go inside, and promptly kills the power. The NIS agents see her on the cameras just before everything goes black. Do-woo rushes to restore power with their backup generator while Bon and Ji-yeon wait in the dark.

Ae-rin follows a trail of glow-in-the dark footprints right to the wall with Do-woo’s hallway photo. Ae-rin recalls his hints about it leading to another passage, and she wrangles the frame until it tilts and the secret door swings open.

Elsewhere, someone composes an email, warning the recipient that J International has been exposed. It seems that Yong-tae’s efforts to keep it quiet haven’t worked out.

The stairway it reveals is dark and narrow. Do-woo restores power and waits for the cameras to reboot and reveal Ae-rin’s location. But it’s too late, and the door swings open to Ae-rin standing in their secret headquarters.

While both Ji-yeon and Do-woo gasp, Bon rushes to hug Ae-rin. He holds her tight as she soaks in her discovery.

COMMENTS

Ji-yeon warned Bon earlier about underestimating smart women like Ae-rin. But now that she’s figured them out, things get easier, right? Everyone can start working together, rather than inadvertently interfering with one another. That is, depending on how well Ae-rin takes all of this new information.

The one piece of the puzzle that Ae-rin is missing right now is why the NIS is interested in her. Revealing this will mean dredging up all of her feelings about her husband’s recent death, and also means that Bon will have to tell her that he knew the truth about her husband before she did and kept it from her. So while I want things to be easier now that everyone is being honest, there are probably still some hurdles to overcome.

I can see that Ji-yeon may be eager to push Ae-rin out of the operation now, but Ae-rin has been the one saving their cover. While Ji-yeon’s false report on Ae-rin eventually led Chief Kwon to the store, it was Ae-rin’s guileless efforts to run it like a real business that made the chief less suspicious. Hopefully it won’t be too long before even Ji-yeon admits they need Ae-rin on the team.

Hopefully this also means no need for Ae-rin to go work for Chief Kwon now at her fake company. How many shell corporation jobs does Ae-rin need before she finally gives up?

When the show started, I was worried about whether or not I was going to like Bon, and was relieved then that I had been unnecessarily concerned. And now, I’m surprised how much I really, really like Bon. He’s such equal parts sweet and serious. He’s never disdainful of the parents and their interests and activities. And he loves those kids wholeheartedly. He’s obviously been in the wrong profession for a long time, and should have taken up being a babysitter/stay-at-home dad a long time ago.

I’m still not on board with the romance quite yet, at least from Ae-rin’s perspective. Bon, I’m totally into him falling for someone after so many years. But I don’t think Ae-rin is ready for this hug yet, no matter what it’s supposed to mean. Doubly so because Bon is not exactly the man she thought he was. We’ll see how it shakes out, but I think they’re going to need to take their time before feelings develop on both sides.

This feels like a transitional moment for the bad guys, where we might get some new evildoers revealed for the second half of the drama as we travel up the chain of command. I hope Bon and crew are able to extract Yong-tae and reform him before whatever series of events that email set into play takes him down.

Thank you @abirdword for the nice recap 👏👏👏

I love it when you think Bon is in the wrong profession and should have been a babysitter/stay-at-home dad. Bon is too nice to fit the secret agent role; but then we dont get to see TBM in the first place 😂😂😂

As for romance with Ae-rin, i dont ship this anymore; writers can pair him with Priestess if they want to i dont care as long as not with Ai rin but please give me a nice ending for Do woo and Ji yeon.

The only ship I'm on currently is Do-woo and Ji-yeon. His crush on sunbae is cute but also a bit sad.
I don't mind the leads pairing up, but I see that Ae-rin has no romantic feelings for Bon. Bon's kindness and interest could be perceived in two ways - either 'I like this person, she gives me candy' or 'I like this woman, she's awesome'. I would board the ship if it sailed but I wouldn't mind if their relationship remained platonic.

*writers can pair him with Priestess if they want to i dont care as long as not with Ai rin*
And here, I've already planned out their marriage with one or two more kids so I can imagine Bon being adorable with a little baby using him as a jungle gym :D

@captblackdog & @shinayame Bon is such a good guy i just dont like him to end up with such a nosy ahjumma who dont even remember how to drive - its not my place to say its just~ arghhh 😂😂😂

Bon is cute as the sitter and as a good neighbour but he is too nice and simple minded if he ended up marrying Ae rin he's going to be like Sang Ryeol - oh nooo 😱😱😱😂😂

I ship him with Ae Rin but just not *yet*. Maybe she's in denial about her husband's death because things have just been so crazy but there's a point where they have to show her grieving properly and telling the twins. I know that isn't a 'fun spy show' thing but there's a process she needs to go through before being in a relationship.

I suspect the writers will show them forming a non-romantic connection and the ending will hint at a future relationship rather than "going there". Otherwise it's just too problematic.

I personally think they'll be great together - after maybe a year.

Ahhhh... it's so nice of Bon to let his house to become Joon-Joon's playground. It's no longer a dark, quiet, and cold place. I can see his place is a warmer one now because of the twin.

I just love how this show portrays both men and women. The women are smart and capable (go Ae-rin!), the men caring.

So what's terius's real name? I believed him when he said his name is Kim bon. Even Yong tae has doubts about it.

Do woo trying to break into j international just because of a drunken request from Ji Yeon was reckless. But even bon loses his common sense when it comes to aerin. The KIS seems more competent than them and they've proved it time and again.

While I admire aerin's investigative prowess, how could she break into the shop? For all she knows, they could be the bad guys. She already got into danger once (though it was downplayed). Shouldn't she be more careful? Atleast think about your kids.

Thanks @abirdword. Another well paced episode with enough things progressing on every front.

The one thing that keeps bothering me each time I see both Ae Rin and Bon are out at night, is that the twins are at home alone, and for extended lengths of time. It's pretty risky to leave young children (especially these 2 rascals) alone at any time, and who's to say they don't wake up and start looking for an adult.

Other than that, I'm pretty on board with how everything is playing out, spy mistakes and all. 😆

@growingbeautifully - thank you for that. I was thinking the exact thing. How are they BOTH out at night and who is watching the twins? That is a little detail that bothers me. The rest of the show I'm enjoying.

Thanks for the recap @abirdword lost it at your side note on "that's not how jobs work, but okay .."😂 I had to do few sharp exhales myself when AeRin and KIS trio kept playing fast and loose with professional/personal boundaries .But then I remind myself that this is a drama verse where a hotshot national agent is foolishly convinced that a store can't be a front because it has real customers and all of a sudden I begin to appreciate Ae Rin's logical follow throughs 😀.
This episode was lighter on the fun beats but there were enough non spy stuff to keep us entertained.
*Sang Ryul feeling overcome whenever Bon gives him is getting to be a hilarious gag.The guy is thirsty for some bro-skinship
*It was so cute to see the twins seeking our Bon and him acknowledging how they have become bright spots in his otherwise dreary life.
*Young Tae continues to be a highlight but it looks like his position is gonna be compromised soon!?
*Ae Rin and EunHa continue to prove they have better spying/deduction skills that most of the NIS out together.

What feels misplaced to me is this probable unrequited love Ji-yeon has for Bon, and Do-woo for Ji-yeon. It feels so off. Not everyday force romantic attachments where there needn't be.

I agree with you. And this show doesn't need any romantic vibe/love line at all, in order to be fun or successful.
I wish the writer and production tea m would understand that... But they will try to please the public, and generally the audience altogether will fall for the basics.
At least I hope that if they create a love line between Bon and Ae rin, I really hope they do it right instead of dragging or artificial.

Actually, what really bothered me was one of the moments that Ji-yeon's interest in Bon was highlighted -- when Bon told Do-woo that he endangered Ae-rin's life by trying to penetrate J International. The camera swung over to Ji-yeon, and to me her expression said, "Now there's an idea for getting rid of her." And if you think she's not that cold, remember her lecture to Bon about not getting attached/not getting sentimental.

I really love this show, but I think they do need to deal with Ae-rin's husband's death at some point. I feel like she didn't really have time to grieve and she hasn't even told her kids yet. Hopefully that gets resolved a little more before Bon officially becomes Joon-Joon's step dad ;)

Thank you for the recap.

Ae rin is smart I agree, but I hope it doesn't put her & her family in too much danger. Are Bon & his team really a bunch of highly trained agents? 😅
And currently I'm not shipping anyone. Let's see where the flow takes me ~~~

Yup. It looks like we will know more about the big bad in this story. The show has been hinting at that man for a while now.
I am okay with Bon and Aerin as spy partners. And their dynamics work best as friends like Sangryeol and Bon since I cant see them as love interest. Candy's ghost is still strong and I do no think he will be over her until her dead is avenged.
I cant believe I am saying this.. but thos twins making mischief to get to Bon is adorable. We know to whom they got it from. 😉

Thank you for your recap, @abirdword.

I felt really bad for Terius in this episode. Thankfully, Joon-Joon helped dispel the gloom with their single-minded campaign to track him down.

ROFLMAO at Kim Bon(d) and Ae-rin's nifty phosphorescent powder for revealing the path to the hidden door to the top-secret HQ. Gee wiz, Mr. Science!

I trust NIS agent Yoo Ji-yeon as far as I can throw her. Her jealous vibe is a turn-off.

On the other hand, I'm enjoying Sang-ryeol's bromance with Bon. The two of them crack me up with their male bonding. Heaven help us when Yong-tae joins in. ;-)

This show has such great female characters so Yoo Ji-yeon is the only sour note for me. The one active female spy we see is a jealous emotional wreck. It reminds me of her character in About Time, which was similarly awful.

Ah, so you're another viewer of ABOUT TIME, @leetennant ChinguMode. Im Se-mi's character in that show was so awful that I loathed her to the moon and back, and was rooting for her to jump off the roof. My only concern was for the repercussions such an act would have had on the two witnesses. She earned her paycheck for playing a horrid chaebol heiress the audience loved to hate. I just hope she doesn't get typecast.

I'm alarmed that agent Ji-yeon is such a jealous basket case. Meanwhile Chief Kwon is fixated on a personal vendetta, a cover-up, or both. Neither of them inspire my confidence in their spy methods.

Yes, I watched About Time. No, I don't know why I watched About Time. I even watched it after it finished so it's not like I wasn't warned.
And warned.
And warned.

It was just awful - worse, it was boring. I was promised a ToD but nobody told me how far into it that would be.

I guess I am the only one not seeing this super smart AeRin everyone is talking about. The minute she fired Bon, that should have been it., but no she continues to be nosy. She is the only parent in that household and her continued nosiness is gonna lead to something not good.

Kdrama's really do have a way of writing women to extreme annoyance.

No, you aren't the only one. She annoys me with her nosiness. After she starts to suspect her husband didn't die of natural cause she proceeds to mind other people's business. If you have a suspicion the company you work for isn't on the up and up, start to look for another job, don't investigate the company. If you find something what are you gonna do about it? Take it to the cops and testify? Not the brightest idea considering you are the only parent your kids have left. Smh, she frustrates me.

And the recapped is praising her making the store legit for Kwon. It would not need to be if she did not go in there after hours, after she was told not to, and blast the place on social media.

That kind of insubordination equals real world fired. Plain and simple, she entitled and does not listen.
