Premiere Watch: Bad Papa, Fox Bride Star, Beauty Inside, Hundred Million Stars From the Sky, Room No. 9

Chuseok has come and gone, which means holy mother forking shirt balls, we are drowning in shows! Here’s a little bit of everything coming at you this week: action, fantasy, melo, mystery, revenge, rom-com, and workplace.

Bad Papa

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Action, family, fantasy
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours total)

Reasons to watch: Jang Hyuk stars in this gritty action drama as a former pro-boxer who suffers a fall from grace. He’s unenthusiastic about his current job and decides to turn into a bad person to become a good father. Relations are strained with his wife (Sohn Yeo-eun), but both parents put aside their long-simmering differences for the sake of their daughter (Shin Eun-soo). There are some mysterious blue pills that Jang elects to take in the teasers, which may be the reason he gains the confidence to enter an illegal martial arts event. The show looks intriguing, like a mashup between The Incredibles (minus the superpowers) and Fight Club.

Fox Bride Star (aka Where Stars Land)

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Melodrama, workplace romance
Episode count: 40 (half-hour episodes, 20 hours total)

Reasons to watch: I like both Lee Je-hoon and Chae Soo-bin separately, and I can’t wait to find out what sort of chemistry they can cook up together this fall. Both work at Incheon International Airport — he as an elite rookie, while she’s worked in the passenger services department for a year. Though she’s a perfectionist, she’s prone to making mistakes. In contrast, Lee Je-hoon is the type to quietly and efficiently get his work done. Both are hiding past pain, and through their interactions with all of the people who pass through the busy terminal and with each other, they’ll start to heal. Between the main duo, the additional cast (Lee Dong-gun and Kim Ji-soo are team leads), writer Kang Eun-kyung (Romantic Teacher Dr. Kim), and director Shin Woo-chul (Secret Garden), this show has all of the right elements to pull off a nuanced human drama.

Beauty Inside

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Rom-com
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: The remake of the 2015 hit movie is finally set to debut on the small screen, this time with the female lead, Seo Hyun-jin, afflicted by the body-changing curse. Her co-star Lee Min-ki has face-blindness, but he has the unique ability to identify Seo no matter what her appearance may be (swooon). The show’s already got me on the romance front, and I’m sure Beauty Inside will milk the comedic opportunities of Seo Hyun-jin’s once-a-month physical transformations. We already know Seo works really well with PD Song Hyun-wook (who directed her in Oh Hae-young Again), and I’ve got high hopes for the drama adaptation to be as introspective and fun as the feature film was.

Hundred Million Stars From the Sky

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Melodrama, mystery, thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This refresh of the Japanese drama A Hundred Million Stars From the Sky (formerly going by the title The Smile Has Left Your Eyes, it’s now back to its original title) looks decidedly chilling and somehow perfect for the fall. Seo In-gook takes on the role played by Kimura Takuya in the 2002 original, a character unlike one he’s ever played before. I’m always impressed by his chameleon-like ability to take on new personas and to portray them convincingly, and I’m delighted that he’ll be reunited with director Yoo Je-won (High School King of Savvy, Oh My Ghostess). Jung So-min plays a woman who gets closer and closer to Seo, while Park Sung-woong plays her detective brother, who’s immediately suspicious of his sister’s new acquaintance. The material is darker fare than I’d usually gravitate towards, but for this cast, I’d watch anything — I just may do it while peeking through my fingers.

Room No. 9

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Revenge, thriller (bodyswap)
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This is a story about an incarcerated convict (Kim Hae-sook) and an ace attorney (Kim Hee-sun) who inadvertently swap bodies, enabling the prisoner to set into motion plans of revenge she’s had years to dream about. Kim Young-kwang also plays a psychiatrist central to the story. I don’t even know the reasons for her imprisonment yet, but I’m rooting for Kim Hae-sook to use her unexpected freedom to dish out some juicy revenge. Now, is it too much to ask for happy endings for both of our fierce female leads?

Post-chuseok last year, we had NINE dramas premiering in one week. I remember because I'd been recently rendered jobless and actually had the time to watch all the premiers and not apply for any jobs,

NINE. Five is tame in comparison. Thank the dramagods.

I am the most excited about Hundred Million Stars From the Sky because of the cast, but there is something in every one of these dramas that makes me want to check them all out:
Fox Bride Star -I love romance, and I love workplace dramas. Hopefully the fantasy element will be executed well.
Beauty Inside -Lee Min-ki looks so good here, and I am sure he will rock this role, like every character he has ever done. Writer-nim and PD-nim, please deliver to match the caliber of your cast!
Bad Papa -Jang Hyuk's magnetism
Room No.9 -Not 1 but 2 kickass heroines

Bring it on, Dramaland!
Beanie friends got my back!

11

@kimbapnoona - Room no. 9 is the one I look forward to the most, for precisely the same reason you're interested in it.

You watched NINE premiers? That's some commitment!

How many are you planning to watch this time round?

HAHAHAH well this time round I'm working. I'm interested in 4/5 - not so keen on Bad Papa, but where's the time? I need a time turner. What about you?

Required fields are marked *

I'm not keen on Beauty Inside (as ChinguMode's comments made me put that on my potential ick-list) or Bad Papa (unless the blue pills turns him into some sort of super-human fighting machine).

I might give the others a look. But I haven't even watched any of the ones that started airing in the last few weeks yet - so I'm behind before all this has even started.

Irl some men do consider their own little blue pills turn them into superhuman machines.....at least that's what Pfizer would like them to believe.

11

I recall CM had made some interesting comments but can't remember what she said. *goes to hunt them down* I'm quite a bit wary of Beauty Inside too tbh - the movie raised such thoughtful points, but the drama with its gender-reversed take + once a month only(?) doesn't have the same impact. But I'm willing to give it a chance because of the source material.

@greenfields - you just beat me to it :-)

And @kimbapnoona thanks for putting another drama on my ick-list.

Now that's two I definitely don't have to watch! I'm doing well here.

4

Bad Papa was going to be on my watch list, but the blue pills just knocked it right off. Really? Blue pills?

6

I'd hate for a lot of Beanies to associate Beauty Inside with the ick-factor before giving it a chance. My understanding is that the intention of the show (as exemplified by its title) is to promote a message that most of us are in favor of being promoted: As women, our worth is overly defined (even by ourselves) by our physical appearance, and not nearly emphasis is placed on all the other factors that make up who we are.

Of course it'll all come down to the execution. But this definitely won't be some male fantasy of him getting to be with a different beautiful woman every month. On the contrary, he'll continue to recognize and love her when she's in the body of a male, and/or an older person, and/or a less conventionally beautiful person. I think very few people could actually do that, but I love that it challenges a lot of our notions about gender, sexuality, identity, and attractiveness.

I'm excited about it and I hope they can pull it off with a lot of sensitivity.

10

Agree with @risaa, well said. :)

(Actually, if we're talking fantasy fulfillment, k-dramas usually cater more to females..........)

7

@greenfields-
the thought of a woman changing her personality once a month reminds me of the days of pms.
I literally went insane and was always surprised. Could this be the premise?

4

@stpauligurl - course it does! I instantly thought of the mensteual cycle too! 😂

2

I'm gonna go ahead and be the obvious one; re: blue pills, were talking bout viagra, aren't we?

What is chuseok?

1

reply

Required fields are marked *

It's a traditional holiday in South Korea (and also North, I think). A harvest festival - which can be found in many cultures. People go home for a few days to celebrate. From what I understand, it's the largest festival in South Korea - and drama ratings are low/some dramas do not air. Usually dramas are planned such that a cycle comes to an end prior to the festival and a new crop of dramas begins right after. Which is why you'll see a large number of premiers in a single week around chuseok almost every year.

I feel you! Was jobless between Feb and Jul this year and nearly fell into the blackhole of drama-watching. Thankfully pulled myself back from the edge just in time but still managed to watch about 7 different dramas weekly lol.

From this group, 2 (Fox Bride Star and Room No 9) are on my watch-list and 1 (100mil stars from the sky) is on a maybe. Generally not into melos but Chae Soo Bin and Seo In Guk in new dramas are kinda hard to pass up. Plus, revenge shows are totally my style.

So many shows. I'm most excited for Bad Papa (Jang Hyuk!) and Hundred Million Stars From the Sky (SIG!) but I'll give Room No. 9 a shot too for the female leads. They sound the most interesting to me but you never know. I might give Fox Bride Star a try if the reviews are good, but I'm not really a fan of the leads for Beauty Inside.

Yes I'm most looking forward to Bad Papa too. Jang Hyuk seems have found a perfect role for him. It seems like it's going to be more of a family drama(fine by me) than a sports drama, but I'm hoping for some quality/realistic action.

Seo In Gook going darker? Sign me up!

Didn't even know about Bad Papa. I'm interested.

Beauty Inside, I'm curious to see how they'll execute the premise. I kinda dig the change from Male to female, though the once a month transformation gives it menstruation vibes..lol

I love Seo In Gook ( I would kill for my Yoon Jae I kid you not) but melo is a big nah for me. Exams are over so I may have time to check out stuff but 5 premieres are a lot. I think what I watch will be influenced by beanie fan walls. If nothing interests me, I can definitely watch Life On Mars because of the love it received from all the beanies. Also Chae Soo Bin is a solid actress but again melo is not my cup of tea

I wouldn’t say Life on Mars a melo, far from it in fact.

On the other hand, The Smile Has Left Your Eye is a very dark melo if you know what the Japanese original version.

Required fields are marked *

I’ve seen the Japanese version. Both are murder mysteries with a melodrama backdrop, difference is Smile Has Left Your Eyes has a romantic love story, while Life On Mars has a paternal love story. In both series the murder mystery is the greater plot, but the protagonist/antagonist was coping with a love dilemma. Actually I would say the only melodramatic part of original Smile was the ending 2 episodes, but the ending left an impression that overhauled the mystery story.

i love reading all these comments everyday! makes me come out of my hiding place sometimes. i can't wait to see how they handle 100 million stars from the sky. i watched the one with kimura in it and was blown away by how it made me feel. course i love kimura just standing still and more when he is in a drama. it was dark and powerful for me so how will this one be? seo in gook will make it so come alive for sure and i don't care if it is different, just be GOOD! its always hard to watch remakes cause you want them to shine like the originals. oh those emotions!

BEAUTY INSIDE! Must watch. :D
My Mondays & Tuesdays are full again. Hoping this drama will be great. I meant to watch the movie weeks ago, away from the drama’s premiere, but never got around to it. Ah well, I just don’t want to compare them now. Will watch the movie later on. (And darnit, I forgot to finish BTLIOF too before seeing Lee Min-ki in a new role... Argh, do I go back and finish it now? At the same time, I usually don't watch the same actor playing in different dramas.)

The writer of Fox Bride Star caught my eye. I enjoyed Romantic Teacher Dr. Kim (awesome medical drama), but I really can’t juggle any more shows on my watchlist. Same with Bad Papa. I hope this is a good show for Jang Hyuk though. Love seeing him in action.

Beauty Inside: So far so good. I was skeptical about this remake but they're doing so well!!! They've drawn a good balance between squealing/awing and plot gravitas. I laughed a lot but still managed to find many touching moments. I like the story they're trying to tell about people recognizing love without the distraction of appearance and all that jazz. And the writer really deserves a round of applause. The pairing of the main leads doesn't make sense at all on paper but there were many times I had to yell out "that's so genius" as the story unfolds in the first 2 episodes. Lee Min Ki still has that hilarious deadpan delivery as in BTIMFL but he's a little bit more...hum I would say more normal here, which makes sense because he's playing the typical playboy/chaebol role. I'm so glad that it's Lee Min Ki because otherwise this character would be so rude, cringe-worthy, and straight out perverted (similar case with Lee Young-Joon in What's Wrong with Secretary Kim). Seo Hyun Jin is wonderful (as expected!). She's just so good at making weird female leads relatable and lovable. The love development is moving so fast, I'm not sure how they're gonna fill the remaining episodes but if they can keep the quality on par with Because this is my first life, I'll be the happiest girl of this month!

With this and 100 Days My Prince, my Mondays-Tuesdays are now filled with so much love and laughs (teehee).
