Cuteness and grime in JTBC drama First, Clean Passionately

The upcoming healing romance drama First, Clean Passionately has released its official poster and two video teasers. The poster features Kim Yoo-jung (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) and Yoon Kyun-sang (Mysterious Il-seung) with the caption: “An adorable germ has found her way to a sterile clean freak.” Kim plays a young job-seeker and Yoon is the germ and cleanliness obsessed boss of a cleaning company who find themselves romantically involved — despite their many differences.

In the most recent video teaser, we see Yoon Kyun-sang face off against a dirty window. The writing on the window says, “A man who wishes for a sterile, germ-free world.” Yoon carefully wipes the window clean, but just when he’s about to relax he sees he’s missed a spot. Yoon tries to get rid of the spot with increasing desperation when suddenly Kim Yoo-jung pops up and startles him. A caption over her head says, “Gil Oh-sol, desperate job-seeker.” He’s horrified when she licks her finger — then dumbfounded when he sees that her spit shining actually worked. As the teaser ends, the two break the fourth wall to point finger guns as they say, “Clean. And tune in.” Hee, Yoon loses his cool when Kim casually puts her unwashed hand on his shoulder.

The other teaser is focused on Kim Yoo-jung’s character. Yoon Kyun-sang describes her in narration, “Wears week-old clothes. Pants with the knees worn out. Day old food stains. Hair that’s gone unwashed for days.” We see Kim Yoo-jung go about her day and she really does come off as a slob, at one point just spraying dry shampoo on her head rather than washing. But clearly opposites attract because as the teaser ends, the music turns lovey-dovey and Yoon says, “But…why?”

JTBC’s First, Clean Passionately will follow Beauty Inside to air starting on November 26.

I was about to agree until I read your reply. I honestly thought your comment was going in a different direction.

I find the poster a little uncomfortable and squicky because of their age gap. Otherwise, I find the poster super heart-fluttering -- her sitting on the washer arm wrapped around his neck with him towering over her kissing her.

for me, when I saw this poster on KYJ's instagram post, I kept wondering who the lead male is, because I kept seeing him as Hoya (Infinite). Then I read this to find that it is Yoon Kyung Sang. They're just 12 years apart guys. HAHA.

Thanks for the update on FIRST, CLEAN PASSIONATELY, @stroopwafel! The teasers are fun. The parade of expressions that flits across Yoon Kyun-sang's face in teaser #1 is very cute, especially when he gets grossed out at the spit polish but has to admire how well it worked. His gyrations to evade cooties are a nice touch. When I saw teaser #2 I was immediately transported to Naeil's pigpen of a student apartment in TOMORROW'S CANTABILE. This looks like it will be a nice, fluffy show in which the worst thing that can happen is failing to separate light wash from dark when doing laundry. Or maybe finding "yellow wax buildup" on the kitchen floor, or dust bunnies that threaten to multiply like Tribbles. That's about as much angst as I can handle. As long as I don't have to do it, I'll be happy to watch while someone else does the dirty work. ;-)

I looked it up: He's 31, she's 19. Not a fan, either. More than ten years between actors when the younger actor is still barely legal makes me squint a bit. There have been larger age gaps in drama castings before, but it's still a sad fact about how the industry works. Nevertheless, Kim Yoo-jung is a great actress and I hope she reaches immeasurable success taking on more mature roles. (Maybe just get her a leading man who's a little bit closer in age to her? It really shouldn't be that hard!)

@sunflowerdiva agree. I have no qualms if the age-gap between the leads is huge BUT KYJ is still too young, she's not even 20 yet. If she were 25 and he 35 I wouldn't be bothered about it. Anyway, I just wish them the best in this drama.

Ikr... there should be enough leading men close enough to her age or the other way around- i don't think there's a shortage of actresses that are closer to YKS'.

2

I oppose casting minors with men 10+ years senior to them but KYJ isn't a minor any more and I doubt the carping over this age gap would have stopped even if she was safely in her 20s.

I mean look at the fuss that was made over IU (23) and Lee Jun Ki (34) age gap when they were cast in Moon Lovers. It's ridiculous to see some types from omonatheydidnt (they use that type of language) coming here and clutching their pearls, ignoring or unaware of the fact that the most in-demand/high status actresses in Kerala are mostly actresses in their 30s, including some of the leads in currently airing kdramas. Who is 'disposable' then?

0

That should be 'high status actresses in KDRAMA'! Stupid autocorrect!

0

The drama originally cast Ahn Hyo-seop as the male lead, and he’s closer to her age than Kyun-sang. But Hyo-seop dropped the role after casting was announced, and then Kyun-sang replaced him. I also just wish the best for our leads. I hope the age gap doesn’t make the romance really awkward.

4

Required fields are marked *

OH NO! Ahn Hyo-seop would have been perfect for the role. Now I'm really disappointed.

I think we're in for fun and fluff... I just really hope the leads make the romance work.

3

I wish Ahn Hyo Seop were still the lead, but does Chan look old enough to be the boss of a cleaning company? That aside, Ahn Hyo Seop would have been perfect if they wanted to play up the height difference like with Yoon Kyun Sang.

0

So is KSH but I remember so much protest like she had robbed a cradle or something. Hypocrites galore.

I don't understand people's bias against Sohyun. I mean she's super smart and crazy talented. Her projects have always been selected to challenge herself as an actress not about age gap or whatever. She wants to prepare herself for the future by taking on roles that are difficult for her age. Plus we all know she did Radio Romance because she was hurt by Ruler and wanted to play a brighter character as soon as possible. Imagine if she waited till Love Alarm came she would have been so unhappy till then. She's much chirpier after that drama she really needed to do that drama.

0

she had robbed a cradle or something

Whose cradle had Kim So Hyun robbed when she is a baby herself?

0

i am so sick of this trend. it sets a terrible precedent in acting and then how women are disposable over a certain age and for the people watching. i cannot stand it. it's so misogynistic and patriarchal and the power imbalance is already set up as her boss. getting sick of this

spot on, @boughtabride. i understand that fans are excited, and i like them both as actors. but pairing them as a couple in a drama just makes me uncomfortable.

im actually a bit sad that kyj agreed to take on this. i mean with her starpower, she would have easily gotten a different project with (hopefully) a more appropriate leading man.

She signed up as the female lead when Ahn Hyo Seop was seriously being considered. This drama was actually supposed to be released earlier in the year. Filming already started last February but then Yoojung was hospitalized and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Her condition made her go on hiatus for like 6 months and the drama production decided to wait for her. When she has recovered, Hyoseop was already committed to acting in another drama so he cannot go back to the cast. It was then the production decided on Yoon Kyunsang. The production waited for over 6 months for Yoojung, she cannot not take this project on even with a different male lead.

3

@panshel yeah, i just realized a few moments ago that the male lead is a "boss" and cutie ahn hyo-seop is too young for that. i just hope the production team chose an older female lead. even if the character description says she is a "young jobseeker", i think KYJ is still too young for a 31-year-old leading man.

im really excited about yoo jung's comeback... but come on, there are so many other actresses whose ages are closer to YKS' age. i understand that he's the boss and she's a "young" jobseeker... but she doesn't have to be THIS young. there's park bo young, IU, suzy bae even (at least the latter two are already in their mid-20s and bo young is only 28). but 19! 19!

inasmuch as i love yoon shi yoon, having him paired with kim sae-ron in mirror of the witch was a bit disconcerting! i have to agree with your earlier comment that this trend should stop!

I'm going to watch this till my hearts content lmao it's like Yoojunggie's comeback drama after serving military (can't believe it has been 2 years since MDBC!). Stanning a child-turned-adult actress is such an adventure being able to witness them grew up.

Oh Sol's age in the webtoon is 20 (same as her) while Sun Kyul is 29 so yeah the age gap is even in the webtoon itself. I know this does not sits well with others but what's done is done and a drama is a drama so I hope it delivers healing romance as promised uwu

Err.. 😐 I don't know what to say anymore.. Even as Yoon Kyun Sang's avid fan, I was against him joining the drama when the casting was first being announced, mainly because I could smell comments like this coming from miles away..

Everyone just want to see want they want to see.. Everyone has their own opinion and it's fine..

What has been done can not be changed, I can only support him and the drama crew, while all you can do after writing comment is move on and find your own favorite dramas 😉

Yes, I didn’t like Radio Romance at all. The age gap I can take, no problem. Just, can’t they give young adults the young adult roles? Stick these girls (and boys although nobody comes to mind yet) back in high school dramas. They can’t carry a romance with older partners because they lack the maturity to play these roles.

Don't speak too soon pls. This drama not even aired yet. Yoojung did just fine in LITM with Bogum. Despite her age, she's a good actress. Hopefully u can give this drama a chance but if u won't, I don't think the drama will loss anything.

I will give it a chance, just like I tried radio romance. I just wish she don’t always get criticized for miscast (it’s never the actors), when she could easily shine in an age-appropriate role.

Required fields are marked *

Despite her age? She's not special everyone her age is brilliant. I mean look at Kim Hyangi she is the best of the best and way better than her. The Kim girls keep getting offered roles that are not appropriate for them. I mean Kim Sae Ron playing a Law School graduate at 18! WTH!

Required fields are marked *

Her role in this drama is a 20-year-old jobseeker. She's 19 years old in real life. How is Yoojung's role here not age-appropriate?

3

Stick these girls back in high school dramas.

But they don't exactly cast high schoolers in high school dramas: Kim Jung Hyun in School 2017.

3
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes. There are less options for “good” high school-ish actors and actresses, so they’ll take the 20+ actors who can pass it off. Which is exactly why I don’t see a rush to “graduate” the good teen and adolescent actresses to the adult world. They’ll make it there in a few years anyway.

Required fields are marked *

I think this is really not fair to Kim So-hyun as an actor, and quite patronising too. Radio Romance was a mediocre drama but the part was great and she did fantastic work in it. And she totally sold that she was a mature young adult.

Surely the point is how old the characters are in the drama rather than how old the actors are? Why wouldn't a young talented actor want to shed the 'child actor' tag and take on a mature role?
