Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4, 2018

Hope everyone had a happy Halloween! Now that October has come and gone, we have a few shows leaving us and a new show arriving. 100 Days My Prince was the first to go, with its final episode pulling in 14.4 percent. It’s been fun watching this drama’s climbing success, especially as the lone sageuk in the bunch. Farewell, my prince.

Over on Wednesdays and Thursdays, The Ghost Detective had its final episode on Halloween day, though its numbers stayed around 2 percent, as they did for most of its run. The newcomer is rom-com Fluttering Alert, which is actress Yoon Eun-hye’s first drama in five years. For a cable drama, its numbers are okay, though not anything great. Finally, there isn’t much change with the weekend shows; they’re all keeping their respective audiences.

I'm surprised to see that Fluttering Alert was added to the 'Currently Airing' section this week since it's not on one of the 6 main channels (KBS / MBC / SBS / tvN / JTBC / OCN), so this post probably confirms that it'll be staying there.

Previously Twelve Nights was added and even had a Premiere Watch post ... but then it got removed. I think the most recognition would be for us Beanies to add these non-mainstream-channel shows to our 'My Shows' list (even the non-mainstream timings like tvN's Friday slot).

Hopefully moving forward all shows will be covered as long as they are not those 100+ weekday soaps! Top Star Yoo Baek? In Praise of Death? Would also like to give a shoutout to 100 Days My Prince's Moo Yeon whose starring in a drama premiering next week with Reply 1988's Bo Ra!

Well @radily you are making me work a little but I am also learning. Before my report I just want to say that Kim Jae-young gave a terrific performance as Moo Yeon in 100DMP which also was his first Sageuk.
Here is what I found about Kim Jae-young's new project. He will be in something called EUN JOO'S ROOM on the O'live channel (part of CJE&M). Here is a MyDramaList link with info:
https://mydramalist.com/31143-eun-joo-s-room
Here is a link from the Olive channel which includes a clip:
https://mydramalist.com/31143-eun-joo-s-room
Perhaps a beanie can fill us in on what this show will be about.

Thanks, bong-soo! Your info led me to discovering that this'll be based on a Naver webtoon and will have one ep. per week on Tuesdays (Nov.6- Jan. 8). The brief synopsis from koreandrama.org: This drama is about Shim Eun Joo (Ryu Hye Young), who is a self-employed woman. She is trying to redefine her life after winning a big project as an editorial designer and subsequently struggling on her own.

Moo Yeon + Bo Ra, really? Wow! In what drama and on which channel and day? I'm concerned that the actor who played Moo Yeon may be too green for a lead, but I'm game anyway!

2.6 to 2.3!🤦🏻‍♀️
But Moo Young’s shoulders were shaking out of love and happiness. Why Korea, why?

I thought it was kind of gutsy for them to leave out the sex scene from the Ep 10 previews. It would have definitely generated some buzz. For the element of surprise this drama keeps everything wrapped up. Unfortunately this can’t bring new viewers on board.

lol I am enjoying Matrimonial Chaos and Hundred Million Stars From the Sky, and sad to see their low ratings. I think these remakes are made well (and casts are great!).

The drama is a contemplative and dark one, and most casual Korean drama watchers just want a light watch, like 100 Days or Secret Terrius. That's part of the reason why weekend dramas are so popular as well.

I think the reason is both shows you mentioned give you a little bit of everything (Action, comedy, mystery, romance).Any show that combines these elements is bound to do well unless there are cast related issues

KBS had issues with Beautiful Mind's avg. 3.5% ratings but look at their weekdays ratings now. Private channels gonna take lot of artists from these big 3.
Heart Surgeon surely is the underdog among foreign audience.

Yeah, it just goes to show that the drama ratings landscape in 2016 is significantly different than in 2018. In 2016, the cable channels didn’t compete in weekday primetime slots, and online streaming and video on demand weren’t as popular, so the average ratings for primetime public channel dramas was 10. In comparison, A Beautiful Mind’s average rating of 3.9 is way below average in 2016. In 2018, to date, only three dramas’ average ratings have crossed the 10pt mark (Return 13.7, Mr. Sunshine 13.0, and The Miracle We Met 11.0), and Mr. Sunshine is a cable drama. What a difference two years make.

Nice. It suddenly takes turn from being funnier to thoughtful. Even behind their silly mundane actions you can see a lot of meaning. This is a drama with a vision. Maybe because it is a remake of an already hit drama. This is the first time where I care more about the characters happiness and peace of mind rather than them ending up with each other. (well, there is Third charm also but that is another story.) Bae Doona's character is cute and endearing.

Bae Doona is wonderful in it, as are the other female actors. It's more realistic than most of the dramas I've seen, but it has heart and humor too.

very sad to see 100 Mllion Stars pull low numbers. tvn dramas usually do better than other cables dramas. Maybe people are afraid the show will follow the original Japanese version and not watching it as a result 😕 shame I'm really enjoying it though

I think the low ratings has more to do with Seo In Guk's army scandal more than anything at least that's what the Knets' comments allude to. The people that are watching the drama are really enjoying it but you can always find a few army related comments in the articles about the drama so I think maybe a sizable portion of people are boycotting the drama because of his scandal.

If you check the original Japanese version’s ratings, the falling patterns is almost the same. Only difference is the Japanese version was aired in a time TK typically pulled 30+% ratings. And back then people didn’t know the ending.

I think it is more to do with the plot. It is not comfortable feel-good kind of story people like.

I think it has more to do with the plot than Seo In Guk's army scandal. There will always be comments related to that, but I don't think a sizeable portion of people are boycotting the drama because of it. Adaptations of Japanese dramas haven't exactly brought in the ratings this year though they've been good quality-wise.

I really enjoyed most of 100 Days My Prince, and I'm happy that it's done well-- but the writing was pretty uneven, and I'm quite surprised that it's become the 4th highest rated tvN drama of all time (beating out Signal).

Everybody seem shocked. It was only Saguek, and maybe thanks to Exo fans? (some casts think so) . It was surely not like other highest rated tvN dramas in qualities? Epicness?

Of course it wasn't the highest tvn drama in terms of quality mainly due to budget restrictions. It was low-budgeted since it wasn't produced with an aim to gather a high rating. A tvn representative said in an interview that they only expected the drama to have an average of 2.5%-3% rating with a peak of 5%. The drama tops the Drama CPI for 6 weeks and Doh Kyungsoo tops the Drama Actor CPI for 4 weeks. The drama also consistently ranked in the top two during it's whole run in VOD listings. So it's super successful in terms of online streaming and tv ratings. That's way beyond the capabilities of any fandom. Kyungsoo has a good reputation as a reliable actor among the Korean gp because of his last films, Hyung, AWTG 1 & 2, that rep carried out into the drama. The drama even have the mon-tues highest ratings among the 20-49 age demographics according to Nielsen Korea in cable & public broadcasts. KMedia even dubbed Kyungsoo as the Sangeuk Rom-Com King. Variety shows even started using Wondeuk's 'Am I the only one uncomfortable' line as a catchphrase. Just one look at Naver vids, articles and blogs even newspapers and you'll know that the drama's high ratings were not fan-driven

I think the lack of sagueks this year probably contributed somewhat to its success. The only other one this year was Grand Prince which became TV Chosun's highest rated drama of all time.

I watched both sageuks. Both featured strong performances by the leads, although I was not as engaged by lead actress Jin Se-yun in GRAND PRINCE as I was by Nam Ji-hyun, who brought a warmer presence to her role. Both shows had dandy supporting casts. Joo Sang-wook, Yoon Si-yoon, and Do Kyung-soo exquisitely embodied their princes, with the latter two essentially performing dual roles. It was a real treat to see YSY in another sageuk after his outing as Heo Joon in MIRROR OF THE WITCH / SECRET HEALER.

I'll concede that both scripts had their problematic aspects. However, I could clearly understand the villains' motivations in GRAND PRINCE. Their rationale for starting a war sounded more plausible and was much better implemented than in 100DMP.

Oh my I didn't know it beat out Signal. I've always had the feeling that the ratings were because of EXO fans.

Probably not because of EXO fans. Popular idols will bring buzz, especially to younger viewers. However, idol popularity itself usually doesn't contribute to higher drama ratings (as evidenced by other dramas starring EXO members and other popular idols).

For 100DMP in particular, Naver demographics consistently show that the overwhelming majority of commenters are women in their 30s and 40s, followed by women in their 20s, followed by women in their 10s or 50s (it vacillates). In other words, the majority of 100DMP's viewers are outside of likely EXO fan demographics.

As for the reasons for the drama's popularity, the vast majority of audience comments praises Doh Kyungsoo's and Nam Jihyun's acting, and many like the fast-paced and interesting (although not unique) storyline. However, many, like those here, are disappointed by the execution of the last episode, which blew.

@risa,

It really does stun me that 100 DAYS MY PRINCE beat out SIGNAL. I'm glad it was so well received. Methinks the dearth of sageuks this year was a factor. SIGNAL was so danged well plotted, executed, cast, and performed (and had a killer soundtrack to boot) that I can only think that the audience preference this time around was for lighter, more escapist fare. SIGNAL was based on a true case.
