[2018 Year in Review] Part 1: The Bean Count

It’s Bean Count time! For those new to our yearend series, the Bean Count is just a fun way to take stock of K-dramas we finished this year and show them some appreciation (or not) using our personal logic. It’s a visual representation of “I know this show isn’t perfect, but I liked it and wanna give it something anyway!”

To get your total beans, count one for each 2018 show you watched in its entirety. If the show is currently airing, you also get one bean if you’re up-to-date on it. Then bestow those beans to whichever show/s you like. This year’s list includes dramas we missed at the tail end of 2017, starting from Jugglers up to Memories of the Alhambra.

It’s always fun to see how ruthless decisive some folks can be when it comes to redistributing their beans. Do you spread them around so everyone gets some love? Do you snatch the other shows’ beans and give ’em all to that one show that touched you? Do you save your beans for an unknown show, hoping the others will give beans to that popular show you also loved?

You can see the results of our collective bean-ing in the charts below. Sort the shows by number of beans, or click/tap on the staff’s name to see how they split their beans. If for some reason you can’t view the charts, there’s a copy of the table here and the pie here.

Tell us in the comments how many beans you’ve collected this year and how you plan to give them away. And stay tuned for the rest of the yearend series. Happy bean-ing!

My List and beans assignment is below. By the way, am I the only one who is watching 'Coffee Please' for Junhyung? I am a Light! I am guilty for not keeping up with 'Radio Romance' though. Will defo watch it for Joonie.

I have a total of 20 beans which is seriously just a handful of the complete list. Am surprised that I did not watch that many after all. *pats on back*

1) I'm Not a Robot - 1 bean
2) Hwayugi
3) Woohoo Waikiki - 2 beans
4) Life - 1 bean
5) What's Wrong with secretary kim - 2 beans
6) Lets eat 3 - 1 bean
7) Boyfriend -1 bean
8) Memories of Alhambra - 2 beans
9) My Secret Terrius - 2 beans
10) The Guest - 1 bean
11) Lovely Horribly
12) Mama fairy and the woodcutter
13) Clean with passion for now - 1 bean
14) Coffee Please - 1 bean
15) Life on mars -1 bean
16) My ID is Gangnam Beauty - 1 bean
17) Familiar Wife - 1 bean
18) Top star yoo baek - 1 bean
19) Witch's love
20) Beauty Inside - 1 bean

Was quite reluctant to give 'Coffee Please' a bean, but eventually did so cos there is Junhyung (who finally returned to the small screen after 'Monstar'. I waited for very long you know.), and there are some points in the drama that I can write for my thesis hahas.

I started Coffee Please. I think I watched 3 episodes for now. But I'm not still convinced by the story...

Monstar was really a good youth and musical drama :)

It's funny the actresses Chae Seo Jin and Gil Eun Hye acted with CN BLUE's Lee Jonghyun in Girl's Generation 1979 and Orange Marmalade :p

@dramalover95 Yes, I remember her! I loved the scene where he composed her a song to cheer her up :)

Monstar was a really good one. I love ‘The Wind Blow’ song. The song that one of the bullied kids sang in front of the whole class. Touching and lovely.

I’m not a robot such a meh drama. There is a reason why it failed across everywhere, but look at all those points lol
Also, I can’t with beanies giving 13 points to 4 episode drama. 4. C’mon now.
My opinion never matched what this site and people here usually fancies over though.

It doesn't mean that you can't give beans to the dramas you liked :)

Personaly, I dropped INAR because I found the plot pretty stupid and couldn't convince myself to watch it even for YSH.

I'm Not A Robot was ok but pretty forgettable. I'm surprised it got that many beans tbh.

I get 15 beans and despite watching 15 dramas this year there weren't many I loved. Or there were ones I loved the beginning of and just lost my interest by the time it ended (My Secret Terrius, Fox Star Bride). So I am giving my beans out to dramas that stuck with me, even now, and were consistent through the whole drama, rather then those ones I loved the start of and lost interest by the end. So this is how I would distribute my beans:

Just Between Lovers: 9
Are You Human Too: 2
Greasy Melo: 1
Grand Prince: 1
I'm Not A Robot: 1
Lawless Attorney: 1

(The Dramas I've seen are: I'm Not a Robot, Just Between Lovers, Hwayugi, Misty, Grand Prince, The Great Seducer, Greasy Melo, Lawless Attorney, Come Here and Hug Me, Are You Human Too, What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, 100 Days My Prince, My Secret Terrius, and Fox Bride Star).

If Prison Playbook doesn’t count, I finished only 8 of the 2018 dramas plus 2 currently up to date. That makes it only 10 beans to distribute this year. I also dropped around 10 dramas (even when I watched 3/4 of it. Yes, I’m looking at you “A Poem A Day”).

My Ahjussi 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
It didn’t make my heart flutter. It touched my heart and soul in the deepest way. How does this PD make the connection between two people so beautiful and meaningful without being cheesy? Ji Ah ah, Dong Hoon ahjussi, please be happy...

Hundred Million Stars From The Sky 🧡🧡
I was intrigued by the first half which I still think was amazing. The second half didn’t quite live up to the original jdorama. Two beans for amazing Seo In Guk & Jung So Min and “Lost” by Ahn Ji Yeon.

Memories of Alhambra 🧡
For Hyun Bin’s cheekbones and dimples.

Life on Mars 🧡
My introduction to Jung Kyung Ho.

I’m Not A Robot 🧡
One of a few rom-coms I enjoyed in past 5 years.

Wow... First time to comment. Been a lurker since 2012.
I got 11 beans to spread. I missed out on a lot of unfinished drama (gave up when I am close to the finale).
Two dramas that I will never forget this year:

My ID is Gangnam Beauty = 10 beans
(the drama just got me psychoanalytically and even made me go back to blogging about it)

Misty = 1 bean

(I am on a sageuk slump. I started Mr. Sunshine but also stopped. Waiting for JIW's drama comeback)

16 beans 🥜 this year!! My taste has definutely leaned towards fluffy and brainless to balance out 1 or 2 heavy/ more serious shows. At the end of the day after putting the kids to bed this Beanie does not want to cry or think too much while reading subtitles... I dropped alot of shows but have been disappointed by so many kdrama endings that I will jump ship ( and read recaps) rather than sit through another bad ending.

Hwayugi- dropped
Radio Romance- dropped
Woohoo Waikiki- dropped
My Husband Oh Jak-doo- dropped but will def watch it
Beauty Inside- dropped so disappointing !!
Twelve Nights- will get to it and binge watch when it's all over and can comfortably FF through all the understated anticipation.
Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter- dropped but reading recaps will watch it if the ending is not atrocious
Mr. Sunshine- dropped but will watch it when can handle the emotional roller coaster
Red Moon, Blue Sun- dropped for same reasons as Mr Sunshine

Finished:
I'm Not a Robot🥜🥜
Longing Heart
That Man Oh-soo
My Ajusshi🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜 so good but not an easy show to watch...
Come Here and Hug Me🥜 same as My Ajusshi wouldn't watch it again but it was well done
What's Wrong with Secretary Kim
Thirty But Seventeen🥜
My ID Is Gangnam Beauty🥜 Cha EunWoo!!♥️
Top Star Yoo Baek
Devilish Joy- started out so good and CJH looks amazing but not alot of there there...
My Secret Terrius🥜🥜 I have twins the same age and want SJS to come babysit (😍😍😍)
The Third Charm- Wouldn't watch it again but the actors did a great job
Fox Bride Star- ending was so meh I wanted to cry
Clean With Passion for Now
Memories of the Alhambra🥜🥜🥜seems silly to give beans after only 4 episodes before we can be disappointed by trucks of doom or amnesia but🤞for a good ending and ♥️the dimples!
Top Management 🥜- worth trying YouTube premium for a month bc this can be binge watched in a few days!

I swear I was doing so well at the beginning of the year but now that I look back, I only managed to gather a total of 8 beans. Hmm...where did it all go wrong? I blame adulting.

Here's my bean distribution:
My Ahjusshi - 3 - This drama was just so relatable. I would give all my beans to this but the other shows below just deserve some loving too.
I'm Not A Robot - 2 - This little gem of cuteness. It was such a sweet drama to start the year and the Beanies Wall was just filled with love at the time.
Laughter in Waikiki - 2 - A complete contrast to everything else I watched but this show was so ridiculously funny that somehow it still made sense. I don't think I laughed that much for a show.
Hwayugi - 1 - Because I actually really enjoyed this adaptation and Lee Seung Gi was just a super hot Monkey King.

85 shows this year (going just by mary's list, very likely more). 85 different shows, all with some sort of intriguing hook or premise, millions of dollars spent, laboured on by hundreds of people, marketed and hyped by their broadcasters, and only these 5 had my heart.

Oh dear. I only have 7 beans this year. So sad really. I've dropped oh so many drama this year.

Here goes:
My Ajusshi: 1
What's Wrong With Secretary Kim: 2
Thirty But Seventeen: 1
Just Between Lovers: 3

I didn't know Just Between Lovers fell in this year. If it did not, I would have had WWwSK as my favourite of the year. Thirty but Seventeen and My Ajusshi aren't on the same level, but, I only have so many beans and I like them both.

Man this was hard! But I have 12 BEANS - ⃝ = 1 bean, ○ = 1/2 bean

-I'm Not a Robot (⃝⃝⃝): Love, love, loved it! Adorable, hilarious, and surprisingly whimsical. And one of my favorite female leads for reasons I could write a whole essay on.
-Hwayugi (○): Ah show, you disappointed me bitterly, but for the love I had for you most of your run, I have to give you half a bean. If only you’d stuck the landing you could’ve had at least 2.
-Woohoo Waikiki (⃝): The opposite of Hwayugi, it started shaky but I just loved it more and more as it progressed. So much fun and so funny.
-Tale of a Good Witch (): only watched because I’m a sucker for twin swaps; it was painful to stick with many times, and the little daughter who wanted to be a pilot was by far the best character.
-Greasy Melo (): Loved the quirky first half, then it started falling apart and I already only have a vague recollection of what happened later besides it being disappointing. So annoying.
-Are You Human Too (○): I loved the Pinocchio-esque premise and Seo Kang Joon was incredible in the role, but I only ended up liking the 2 main characters and the 2nd male lead. Every other character acted erratically depending on the demands of the script. And it drove me insane. So half a bean for the awesome OTP.
-What's Wrong with Secretary Kim (⃝⃝⃝): My other favorite show of the year, a hilarious romantic comedy with two exceptional leads surrounded by a cast of fun characters. And I know some didn’t like the plot slow down at the end but I really enjoyed seeing these characters we’d grown to love struggling with everyday issues, because it was still delightful.
-Witch's Love (): Enjoyed the premise, but something just felt missing. Doesn’t really deserve no beans, but had to get the ones for my favorites from somewhere!
-Lovely Horribly (⃝ ): I feel like this was a sleeper that slipped by a lot of radars. I really enjoyed it; the premise, the tone, the spookiness – I just really liked everything about it. It was very unique.
-Happy to Die (○): This probably would get a full bean only it hasn’t finished and again, my favorite shows demanded sacrifices. Love the Groundhog Day aspect and also how that power was wielded and how the story progressed.
-Boyfriend (○): Again, really enjoying but its early enough that I can foresee many ways it could go down a path that I’d dislike, so I’m being cautious.
-Memories of the Alhambra (⃝⃝): Here I’m breaking all my rules that deal with wariness about still airing shows. But gosh darn it, this show knew all the buttons to push to suck me in completely. I’m counting on you show- don’t let me down!!

So this year I was able to complete 15 dramas (I believe Hide and Seek was missed on the list). I would like to divvy up my beans in the following manner:

Woohoo Waikiki - 7 beans (for like 90% of the series, I found myself laughing till I was crying).

Lovely Horribly – 2 beans (was also an entertaining watch and had a unique plotline)

Shall We Live Together – 2 beans (fun family drama that both my mother and I enjoyed)

Hide and Seek - 2 beans (the makjang had me hooked!)

The Beauty Inside - 2 beans (I loved it when she changed into Kim Joon-hyun in the first 10 minutes of the first ep!!! That was when I knew I was gonna love this drama!)

Thank you!!!!!

I'm not sure whether I should feel proud or embarrassed to have 44 beans???
Eventhough I have a lot of beans, there weren't quite enough for all the shows I thought deserved one, so I've tried to be tough.
So here is my bean count:
Live - 7
Just Between Lovers - 7
The Guest - 7
Life on Mars - 6
You Who Forgot Poetry - 3
Matrimonial Chaos - 3
I'm Not a Robot - 2
Life - 2
Red Moon, Blue Sun - 2
Should We Kiss First - 1
Miss Hammurabi - 1
Greasy Melo - 1
SKY Castle - 1
Happy to Die - 1

There were other shows I wanted to give beans, but then I would have to take beans from my top four and I just couldn't justify doing that - to me they were exceptional!

Completed 2 🍻🍻 measly dramas. I wish I had more beans to give to LoM, but MA is just that good:

1. LoM - I love it so much I will pre-give it next year's beans I don't have yet. May I please? 😢

2. My Ajusshi 🍻🍻 For great writing, stellar acting, beautiful cinematography. How did dark alleys and run down neighbourhoods look so much like home? How did they make the heartbreak so agonising, the journey from hell so redemptive?

Do we get extra beans for rewatches? If yes I will get about 10 :)

Dropped shows
1. INAR - wanted to get on the bandwagon but didn't manage to stay on. Sorry guys. Not my cuppate
2. My husband Oh Jak Doo - it speaks volumes of the loneliness of singlehood but the double noble idiocy was quite draggy
3. Room No. 9 - dropped by Ep2
4. Mr Sunshine - The writing and characterisation felt ordinary. Bumped up by breathtaking shots and stellar actors. But ended up reading recaps.

23 beans for me! First time posting here, but figured I’d join the fun this year.

I'm Not a Robot - 5 beans - Ugly cried through a lot of this one, and the main couple was adorkable. Their whole energy just had me rooting for them the whole time.

Just Between Lovers - 2 beans - Had no expectations going in, but had interesting characters, and I thought it treated trauma really well.

Woohoo Waikiki - 2 beans - I laughed so much during this show, every now and then a joke wouldn’t land, but so many had my sides hurting that I forgot those.

Live - 5 beans - Gritty, and it really got you to care about pretty much every character. Even ones that seemed unlikeable at first you’re rooting for at the end.

My Ajusshi - 5 beans - I’ve tried a bunch of IU shows before, and they’ve never REALLY hooked me. This one is a bit of a slow burn, but I was absolutely captivated every moment I was watching. The weekly wait was brutal at times.

Mr. Sunshine - 1 bean - Just gorgeous to look at, with so many layered characters.

Let's Eat 3: Begins - 1 bean - I wasn’t able to get into season 1 and 2, but this showed our heroes origin story of sorts. Wish they’d had time to properly end it, but I still enjoyed what we got. If the first two seasons weren’t for you, I’d still recommend this one (though not on an empty stomache...good lord.)

Thirty But Seventeen - 2 beans - I actually thought about dropping this one at first, but it got it’s hooks in me, and I started to care about all the main characters.

I have more beans than I thought: 25. And I also dropped more dramas than I thought I did. I guess it's easy to see what kind of dramas that I enjoy according to the beans distributed, but I really couldn't pick a favourite between Just Between Lovers, Mother and Come and Hug Me.

Just Between Lovers: 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
Mother: 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
Come Here and Hug Me: 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
My ID Is Gangnam Beauty: 🌱🌱🌱🌱
Miss Hammurabi: 🌱🌱
What's Wrong with Secretary Kim: 🌱

I loved the rest of dramas where I didn't give a bean to but some really disappointed me with the ending.

Woohoo Waikiki
I'm Not a Robot
Hwayugi
The Great Seducer
Switch
Lawless Attorney
Rich Man
Your House Helper
Thirty But Seventeen

It's been a while, DB! Well, it's good to know my drama Spidey-sense didn't dull while I was away. Here's what my top list looked like after I sifted through all options to watch from 2017-18, I promise I didn't look at the beans and cheat:

I'm Not a Robot (already watched now, hee!)
Everything with Lee Jong Suk in it (can't watch it first, it'd definitely be too much for my heart) ♡♡♡
Memories of the Alhambra (saw 5 min on the plane and was hooked, should've known it'd be writer Song)
Just Between Lovers (those trailers though!)
Hundred Million Stars From the Sky (because... Seo In Guk)
Mr. Sunshine (Because this is a change for writer Kim, and I like it)
SKY Castle (because it was mentioned in church at least 3 times while I was there, it's gotta be good)
My Secret Terrius (So Ji-Sub), Boyfriend (Park Bo-Gum), Lawless Attorney (Lee Jun Gi I'll at least give it a try pick better dramas), 아는 와이프 (Sorry I'm blanking on the English name Ji-Sung I love you),

Don't know how I forgot about My Ajhusshi, but it was up there in my list before I left--and I'm glad to hear it will deliver^^

for 2011. After that, additional songs are basically gravy but
tend to also cost the band if they run overr their timme
