Hi Everyone! As some of you may know, I was bitten by the K-Pop bug this year. As such, I roped @greenfields @sicarious @raonah into doing an awesome #kpopnotawardsawards this year. We’ve come up with some categories for our fellow K-Pop loving beanies and ourselves to share what we loved in the world of K-Pop this year. We’re not going to provide any winners--or losers--to you. You just post who you love for each category. Have fun!

Below you’ll find a directory of all the posts that are on the Beanie Wall--it may take some time to show up as it will need to get DB admin approval first.

I didn't know there were so many kpoppers on DB, have I been missing out. Whie I am definitely an ajumma (70) I hve loved kpop and Jpop for a long time and while Shinee were my lead into the Korean music field and I have followed a number of groups I have to say that my favourite will always be VIXX for daring to be a bit different. It's hard though when there is so much good music to enjoy.

Ally the thing I like about kpop is that it doesn't matter if I speak the language or not there are a number of sites where you can find lyrics translated. My youngest grandchild loves music and has been listening with me all his short life so I always make sure its a song he can listen to or a video suitable to watch. I remember as a teenager French music was popular in Australia but unless you spoke the language you had no idea what you were singing.

They're not all necessarily K-Pop fans. TBH, I was a bit lazy with the tag and I should have done it a bit better. This is somewhat of a master tag list from @bammsie and in my infinite wisdom, I forgot to tag her. Sry Bams! Many of those beanies do listen to K-Pop together though.

I like SHINee, especially their newer stuff. I have yet to check out VIXX. Like @ally-le I'm new to K-Pop, so it's taking me a while to check out all the groups.

Hope you have fun with this.

Despite my addiction to k-drama, I never got into K-pop much. Once in a while I come across a song or video I like, but 95% just don't excite or interest me much. I think the last k-pop song I really liked was Lion Heart, and that group is not even around any more. https://youtu.be/nVCubhQ454c

I seriously love that song and video! Thanks for posting. I really like how upbeat and retro the song and video are and how they injected a bit of humour also. Their sub-unit, Oh!GG, also came out with a song this year:
https://youtu.be/SdzLl-XpJt0

Girls' Generation hasn't disbanded, even if Sooyoung, Tiffany, and Seohyun are no longer signed with SM. In interviews, individual members have talked about still doing projects together in the future, but would want to focus for the meantime on individual activities.

I think IZ*ONE's La Vie En Rose has a somewhat similar vibe to Lion Heart: https://youtu.be/E-T1gEeUqwA. It's the performance version of the MV.

Guys I may have landed my dream job! This year has been hot and cold, career wise, for me. I left a job that I absolutely adored not knowing my position was being made redundant. It really broke me when I had to leave but time and patience got me to this one that I absolutely love. I love the industry and I am happy to be involved in a business that promotes happiness and well being. This is basically my 4th week on the job and I cannot wait for the holidays to be over so that I can go back! Hehe!

Also I am turning 36 in a few days (new year’s eve to be exact) so happy birthday to me!!!

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you all an advanced happy new year! ❤️

Happy Friday, all! Hope you've been enjoying the holidays.
Since its the last Friday of the year, I wanted to look back at my Resolutions from last year and see how I fared. And of course, I failed.
Resolutions on Dec 8, 2017's OT:
http://www.dramabeans.com/2017/12/open-thread-529/#comment-3145804

The only one I sort of stuck to was
2. Less time on dramas (err...except now I spend all that time on kpop)
4. Figure out career situation. I managed to stick to this job for a whole year - that's an achievement for me since I usually quit within 8 months (my own cursed period). And I have some clarity on what I want from life, and therefore how to move forward.

Additionally, I lost 6 kgs this year! YAY

New Years' Resolutions for 2019:
1. Work steadily. Stay with the job, stick to your studies, do your writing - you'll only see the benefits of your efforts in 2020.
2. Balance reel and real life better.
3. Love myself. Don't be so harsh on myself. Remember to smile.
4. Lose another 6 kgs! XD

What are your resolutions?

Required fields are marked *

That some pretty impressive weight loss! That's what I've been trying to lose for the past 2 years. lol.

I feel you on the K-Pop.

I stopped making New Year Resolutions because I almost always fail. I've started trying to make changes as I go and sticking with them. One at a time. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose--spectacularly.

5
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think 6 kilos is massive too! HAHAH its so tough to lose any weight at all.

Also that's the best way to approach things? There's no point waiting as @snarkyjellyfish says - waiting for the new year only gives you time to put it off and talk yourself out of it.

4
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

@snarkyjellyfish is wise.

4
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Aww, thank you!

I don't know if I'm wise, but I won't pretend I'm stupid either.

That's one of the things I've resolved to be better about recently -- accept it when someone says something nice about me. It's really hard, you guys. I feel like we're conditioned to only accept our faults.

But good luck on your resolutions! No resolutions for me, as @greenfields noted, but I do have a few things I'm working on about myself right now:
1. Sticking with the boxing, hopefully adding a second day a week or every other week. I've been very good about my class, but this week it was on Christmas, so I'm trying a weekend class to make it up.

2. Being diligent with my yoga practice. I want to be able to do inversions again.

3. Making healthier choices. (Um, I may already be failing at this since there's a plate of fries next to me right now.) (Though I also mean this in a mental/emotional way because that is just as important as physical health.)

4. Being OK with failure.

5. Start writing again. And stick with it.

3

Mine were:
1. Practice yoga everyday. Full success with that one.
2. Learning new language - Korean, practice one I already started - Russian, unfortunately didn't went to well.
3. Learn to draw/paint. I drop my practice after two month but picked it up in July and draw/paint regularly ever since.

As for 2019:
1. Put my priority on languages
2. Keep doing yoga/painting
3. Find new job

I am about to head to Asia to see my family in couple of days and before each trip I tell myself that I have to lose a few pounds to be more Asian thin. I wish at my age I can just focus on health, but my family is pretty image conscious and it is still really difficult to escape this mental trap for me.

Research has shown that even faking a smile can positively affect one's mood. May I ask why you would like to smile more?

5
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ouch. I have to say that Asian thin (being East/SE Asian thin and not South Asian thin) is way too thin. If you're not meeting that standard, you may not be not-thin either. :) But even otherwise, I wish you the best of luck in escaping this trap - because that is exactly what it is. All these dramas and kpop make me feel fat too. *sigh*

I don't smile enough. My colleagues call me intimidating hahahaha - that's why I need to smile. >_<

4
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I hope your colleagues made that comment in a friendly context! Without much understanding the origin of your colleagues' request, it reminded me of a male senior colleague a few years ago came up to me in the hall way and remarked on how much prettier I looked that day because I dressed up and asked me to do that more often. I wish I had a better comeback to his sexist comment than just "well Bob, this takes a lot of work and I don't have the time every day."

4
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Damn that Bob. Grr.. i think you gave him a decent comeback. You have also actually correctly identified the origin of the statement - male colleagues. 🤦 Facepalm. I do in general think I should smile more anyway though.

Despite all this, have a great time with your family kimbap! 😊

3

Those are some great resolutions, Greenie! #1 is a big one for me this year.

I usually never make New Years' resolutions, but this year I have several things in mind that I want to change.

1. Carve out even just a little bit of time every single day to study. Even if it's just 15 minutes, it's better than nothing.
2. Spend less time lazing around doing nothing. I've found myself doing that way too often lately. This includes mindlessly refreshing websites (like Dramabeans) and social media constantly without ever actually engaging with any content. I need to cut that out!
3. Read more books. I've been slacking lately.
4. Watch more dramas. I only finished a handful this year... the dramas have to be good for this to happen, though. So it's not my fault if they suck and it doesn't come to fruition!
5. Regain my flexibility. I used to stretch a lot every day as part of a daily routine but I got lazy about a year ago or so and stopped and I can't do the splits anymore and it makes me really sad. I'm not an athletic person but I always liked my flexibility and it's all gone now. I need to start stretching more again!
6. Spend more time hanging out with my friends, both the ones I'm always in contact with and the ones I haven't seen in a while.

5
1

Required fields are marked *

These are great mindy. In practicle terms, broken down into exact habits i'd like to build - mine are kind of similar to your's. Essentially, its a form of healthy living. Everything that you suggest. I really, sincerely wish you the best of luck in making some of them happen! I hope you can look back at the end of 2019 with some happiness that you changed somethings about you that you didnt like in 2018.

Why did I naively think that winter break time means quality drama time? I am behind on almost all dramas except No Empress No Dignity thanks to the weekly Beanies' snarkwatch on Rabbit.

But holiday-induced stressful real life does provide one drama-like swoony moment this past week. Little background: Kimbap Ahjussi and I unfairly divide up our household chores with KA doing most because in my defense, he does them better (we are in agreement on this score.) I however enjoy eating tremendously therefore cooking is my thing.

One evening this past week I got caught up watching dramas in the earlier part of the evening and not feeling particularly hungry because of the obligatory holiday cookie binge. Kimbap Ahjussi walked into the room with a food-curious expression so I asked if he needed dinner soon. He looked at me and with sincerity said "Sweetie, don't worry about me. Why don't you get your screen time in and I will grab something from the fridge." *swoons from drama enabling bliss*

KA, you are my Top Star but with Jack Sparrow gruff, my own strange hero. I promise I will cook with passion forever, that is, once I finish this next episode.

Happy new year to all the Beanies and wish all of us to experience a sublime drama moment now and then throughout 2019!

Have you ever fallen head over heels for an actor/actress and wonder, How have I not seen this person before?

Except that once you delve deeper or backtrack you actually have seen them but just overlooked them?

It's kind of miserable, really. I'm stanning Lee Junho (Chief Kim, JBL, WOL) so hard and I delved into his variety appearances starting from one of my nostalgic favorites, Running Man. It went like, yea he was there with 2pm but was forgettable. Wait, he went there with Han Hyo Joo too! (But was also forgettable!) Wow, he was there with Kang Ha Neul and Kim Woo Bin too! (And once again, it passed over my head.) It's sad really, once I actually became a fan that I noticed. And wish he had done more and had more screen time.

8

Required fields are marked *

That only goes to show that you're not stanning him for his looks alone ;-)

2

Required fields are marked *

It's not that but I generally like to check actors/actress on variety shows. Strangely they are usually more open and personable than idols, maybe because they are not as used to to varieties. My favourites are Sung Hoon, Seo Yeji on Knowing Bros, Park Seo Joon and Kang Ha Neul, Park Hee Seon, evil drama ladies on RM, Kim Ji Hoon on Crime Scene.

Thanks @tofuetoffee kx. Being of a certain age this is my first encounter with the word "stanning". Thank you for expanding my vocabulary.
I enjoyed Junho's performance in WOK OF LOVE which is the only drama of his that I have seen.

4
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

;) For some people it has bad connotations and they equate it to being an agkae, but I prefer to see it as being a fan but then going a step further. Casual > fan > stan > akgae > sasaeng but not everyone sees it this way, just imo.

I'm glad you enjoyed him in Wok of Love. Since I like to follow discussions of dramas, Poong as a character was ripped apart despite Junho's good acting, and I found that hard to swallow lol. Don't want to push him down your throat, but if you do have time defintely check out his other works.

It comes from the Eminem song Stan. A song of my youth, because I'm old. I still remember my best friend picking me up and and being all" Have you heard this?" And pressing play.
It is interesting the journey certain words have.

kx I'm with you, I didn't really know him either until JBL when for the first time since watching kdramas I understood the chemistry between a lead couple. There have been couples that I've liked together but whenever these two were together I found myself leaning closer to the screen. Then came the Wok thing and there was just nothing there for me. Is it just me or do others feel the same?

OT week 98! Hi sweet Beanies! The year is drawing to a close and next week we’ll be in 2019! My sincere wishes to all of you for a healthy and bright year ahead! We had a wonderful, very low-key Christmas day this year, just the four of us, some congee, and then pan-seared duck for dinner. I’m finishing Mr. Sunshine and watched two episodes while doing laundry Christmas day. Goodness, it’s such a beautifully shot show. I don’t know who their camera people are, or lighting director, but whoa, the lighting. I’m starting the finale, and I’m been able to avoid most spoilers, like, I still don’t know if Ae-sin dies, but I’m thinking she does. Hina’s final rebellious act was awesome, and I may have teared up when the new Righteous Army gathered on top of that mountain at sunset. But in all, it didn’t affect me as much as I thought it would, and doesn’t even make my top 10 dramas I’ve watched. It’s all about the emotional connection for me, and if I fall in love with the characters, or want them in my life, and I really didn’t end up wanting to know any of them further than what the show already told me.

Memories of Alhambra continues to be intriguing, and I’m still interested enough to watch this every week. I hope we find out what happened to the brother soon, which I never thought he was dead, just in hiding to protect his family and himself. I do wonder if he’s still playing the game (although the server says he’s not logged on for a year) but all it amounts to is killing his friend over and over and over, just like Hyun Bin’s character.

Boyfriend took a holiday hiatus, so I rewatched three episodes of Love Rain, with a heavy FF button. Non-cute scenes need not apply. Seo Joon is such a lovable jerk. I think that Yoona is still so freakin’ adorable in this. It was also raining hard while I watched it. It was marvelous.

Oh, and I caught the KBS’ singing showcase this morning. Wow, there’s a lot of Kpop. I guess I know this peripherally, but when all those groups are performing back-to-back, it’s a bit overwhelming. I couldn’t just watch it without a break. And, I only recognized a handful of groups, but thanks to my Beanie kpop education, and Goblin, I recognized Roy Kim right away and had the wherewithal to actually record him singing live. He’s really good, like really, really. And I’m looking forward to @hades’ kpop Beanie awards today!

Conversation about my son’s dimple (dedicated to Hyun Bin’s dimples):

Me: Son, I think your dimple has gotten bigger, I’m looking at your pictures 4 years ago, and it wasn’t as prominent.

Son: I know, it looks like I’ve lost half my face when I smile.

Daughter: It’s like an inch long, like someone just cut out part of your face.

Me: *laughing* It’s not that big!

Husband: You’re a good looking kid.

Me: Some girl is going to fall for that dimple.

Husband: Or boy.

Son: What!?! I don’t want any of that.

Husband: Just...

...give yourself a couple years.

Me: Don’t worry, son, I’ll probably hate anyone that falls for that dimple, so you won’t have any of that.

Moral of the story: Only I can love my son’s dimple, that’s all there is to that.

2nd moral: Poor daughter got my lack of dimples, but that’s probably better for her.

3rd moral: Happy New Year, Beanies!!!

“Husband: Or boy.”

I’ve always thought your husband sounds like a lovely person in your OT stories, but with two small words he just became a grade A fantastic father. What a small but incredibly huge thing to say in that moment.

He’s amazing. And yes, I parroted the “or boy” back at him. I’m just glad my kids have some diversity around them and know we accept and love them no matter what.

Oh, Love Rain. I should do a rewatch soon (heavy on the FF). It's definitely that drama that I love but can't quite explain why. Seo Jun is just the best. Even when he's the worst. He's such a squishy marshmallow underneath it all.

I had some random dream about Hyun bin last night. He approached me then he said "I like rice". Who doesn't, I thought. I eat rice everyday, at least twice a day. Isn't it normal for Asians? He continued "I like rice because I'm from Sumatera". Before I had the chance to disagree, the venue changed. We moved to some kind of padang eatery, but I'm not really sure, because I didn't see palates of minang cuisine in front of us. Instead, baby Laeticia (from 'Chilling adventure of Sabrina') appeared on our table. I don't remember what happened next. It's a shame there was nothing sexy in my dream.
I woke up with two goals.
1. I want to have baby with Hyun bin. I'm sure our baby will be as adorable as baby Laeticia. But I know it's very difficult to materialize, so my next goal is
2. If I met Hyun bin, I'm going to take him to the best Padang eateries in town. It's still highly unlikely going to happen, but a girl can dream.

I finally convinced my boyfriend to watch 30 But 17. His name is also Chan, so he's getting a real kick from character Chan's bubbly personality because he's literally the exact opposite, and it's absolutely hilarious! Don't think, feel, my two Chans!

Bored from waiting for this week's episodes of Sky Castle and ranting about the Crying Lady of Alhambra, I tried Clean With Passion. No luck. Dropped. Then I remember the fanwall raves on this strange show - Just Dance. I am still in the early episodes but man! thank god for little gems like this!

While pitying Seung Chan(Jang Dong Yoon in this role more than makes up his previous one in APAD), I could imagine what my 17 year old son went through in his first school year with the girls. Previously, in all his 10 years of school life, it was all boys. Then the girls came in and according to him, school isn't the same anymore. For starters, the boys behaved better which translated to boring. There weren't any more childish pranks because the concern was to impress the girls, ha! But the girls weren't all sugar and spice too. One brought waxing strips to class and manage to coax some boys to try. Ouch!

Most super annoying things in 2018 dramas for me:

1. Head slapping. Everyone does it - cops, students, worker drones. It's stupid and tiresome and have no idea why almost every drama has to have a few rounds of it. (also applies to a lesser extent to the neck-grabbing thing).
2. Mystery bottles. Everyone seems to carry at least half a dozen of those little bottles of.. "something" - energy drink, Ginseng, vodka - who knows to hand out randomly to people they want giant favors from. Yeah, I am going to drop those murder charges because you bought me a $2 yucky tasting drink of caffeine and a few vitamins.
3. Squeaky tires. Every car that changes lanes, even at 2km/hr has to have that squealing tires sound effect. Even on muddy and dusty roads. And every car chase has to have at least 11 random lane changes for no reason on an empty highway.
4. The fact that the Truck of Doom has been far too quiet lately. I know of at least 43 characters in 11 dramas that should be smooshed, but all to no avail.

Happy New Year :)
