Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 21-27, 2019

As January comes to a close, we have some new dramas, new ratings, and thanks to You-Know-Who (and no, I don’t mean Voldemort), new records. It’s great to see that the excitement from the beginning of the year is still alive.
Unfortunately, there are still a lot of shows struggling to keep their audiences. Numbers for Bad Detective and My Strange Hero are trickling down, as are the numbers for An Empress’s Dignity. The latter’s latest competition, Spring Must Be Coming, didn’t do much better, premiering at 2.2 percent. The good news, though, is that Song Hye-gyo and Park Bo-gum’s drama Boyfriend ended with a solid 8.9 percent.
Due to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, JTBC only aired one episode of SKY Castle and moved the finale to next week. This, of course, didn’t stop the show from breaking its last record with 23.2 percent. Next, we had Romance is a Bonus Book premiere, which (being a huge Lee Jong-seok fan) I need to watch right now. Not listed is zombie sageuk Kingdom, a 6-episode Netflix original that’s already garnered praise.

It dropped slightly this week since it slowed down and the romance took over.
Here is hoping it won't turn into another one of those sageuks that started off well then took 5 steps backward by midway and completely threw you off by the end.

I totally agree with you but let me just add that there was also the Asian Cup last Tuesday which is the main cause of the ratings dropping to 7.6%. Ratings normally rise by the second broadcast day, but all the Mon-Tues ratings fell down due to the soccer match.

The actors of SKY Castle made a bet on the final episode's ratings. Jo Jae Yoon bet 28.2%. While episode 19 did not surpass 25% like he thought, the final episode should easily surpass 25% even with (or especially with) the preemption this week.

Yay! Congrats to Sky Castle!
Favorite line for this week came from Yeh Bin - "If you wanted it so much, grandma, you should've gone to med school."
The same goes for Coach Kim. She used Kay to overcome her insecurities and achieve what she herself could not.
The most powerful scene in this week's episode belonged Coach Kim and her daughter Kay. I never expected Kay to be able to talk. It turns out that she wasn't totally mentally disabled by the accident. Her mad scribbling of mathematical equations and meltdown were horrifying to watch.

This week episode felt like finale, I wonder what finale will look like, will we have more of others families, or there are more lies to expose.

It was sad to see that Kay too, was doing everything she could to make her mother happy. That scene broke my heart into so many pieces.

Neighborhood Lawyer must be a dud? I left it in the first episode when they didn't orient the viewer to his situation and the comic element was missing. With those two leads the ratings should be a lot higher, so how bad is it?

Sky Castle, Crowned Clown and Empress' Dignity are deserving of their high marks. The Boyfriend (Encounter) was a slow and easy ride in a lot of ways and also deserved the attention. This week I think the ratings really represent the quality of the various shows.
I haven't yet started Romance is a Bonus Book, but I am sure I will have caught up by the next ratings report.

I'm so surprised that Romance is a Bonus Book is good! The synopsis wasn't that interesting to me so I only watched it because nothing else was on. Really great chemistry and natural acting from the leads. Have a feeling the second male lead (and his dog) will break my heart!
