Hmm touch your heart with Lee Dongwook and Yoo Inna. Kingdom with Ju Jihun and Bae Duna. Romance is a bonus book with Lee Jongsuk and Lee Nayoung

Kingdom's second trailer dropped the other day and HOLY SHIT it looks scary as hell. Like, the Walking Dead can just go home now the new Zombie champ show is here. You know, Netflix already greenlit season 2?? The execs must have screened it and loved it to do that. I'm very hopeful and very, very anxious. I may have to have a viewing party or something.

Oh no, I really wanted to check this one out but I'm terrible with horror... Looks like it's definitely going to be a show best suited to watching in a group. Also, I think I read somewhere that Kingdom is supposed to be 3 seasons.

– The Man Who Became King
– Romance is a Supplement
– What’s Wrong, Poong-Sang
– Reach of Sincerity
– Best Chicken*

* I don't expect much, it's MBN. Park Sun Ho is in this (APAD’s Joo Young Joo Young!). Also Pentagon's Hongseok.

Happy New Year!

We are always looking for new ways to celebrate New Year's Eve/ Day, ... since it's the poor stepchild in our cultural celebrations. Do you have any traditions that give the New Year meaning? For example, I have gifted my spouse with the Korean marriage ducks- excellent way to communicate!

What are marriage ducks? Asking for a friend.

3

reply

Required fields are marked *

They are a pair of duck carvings- usually mandarin ducks as they mate for life. They are used in Korean wedding ceremonies and are given as marriage gifts. They represent fidelity, peace and fertility.

However, my favorite thing is they can be used for nonverbal communication. If all is well, the ducks face each other, if not, then one or both ducks face away......you can't imagine how much fun there is in pausing a brawl midway to turn the duck!

Hiii guys,

Anybody watching any Turkish series...
I just finished Ezel. OH MY GOD...Mind blown. Anybody likes to watch
revenge melos. This is it...
And Eysan, she is the most complex heroines I have ever seen in drama land. The main character in Gone with the Wind was similar but I couldn't root for her till the end.
The actors who played the leads had EXPLOSIVE chemistry and I even searched to know if they ever dated.
I have also watched the netflix series, 'The Protector' and am currently watching Kara Para Ask.
Anybody have anymore suggestions?
It just feels like there must be a lot more good dramas or movies out there.
Do you know any websites like DB?
It is difficult to find movies and series as they are not really famous like Kdramas and of course I don't know the language.

It’s been years since I last watched a Turkish drama, and it was Kara Para Ask (season 1 only). Didn’t watch the second season coz I didn’t really like the story. I haven’t seen the entire series (Ezel) but if you enjoyed it then you might like Ask ve Gaza (Love And Punishment.)
Unfortunately it’s hard to find English subbed Turkish series, only Arabic subbed as they are popular in the Middle East.
Anyway, are you enjoying Kara Para Ask?

I am watching the second ep right now. Its really interesting so far. I curious to know how the leads will work out their relationship with all the complications between them.
Yeah, subbed ones are really hard to find.
What does 'Kara Para Ask' means?
Is there some other series you can recommend?
I will look for Ask Ve Gaza.

Kara Para Ask is Kara: Black, Para: Money, Ask: Love and that's the title, pretty simple.

oh is the whole series is about smuggling and black money?
Actually, I want to ask for your opinion but then I am afraid that I will lose my interest if it is negative.

I think that does remain an aspect of the show. Along with the romance playing. But yes maybe it is not as strong as Ezel. I just saw a few episodes so I am not sure what to tell you. But it didn't retain my interest either.

I second Waps’ recs below. Those are really good shows, well- acted and directed. Lead actor in KPA, Engin Akyurek, is also the lead in Fatmagulun Sucu Ne. You can find the eps on youtube.

Whew ! Follows the lives of four children of a family. A doctor, an actress, a set of twins, a boy and a girl. Hold on, there is a birth secret as well as fauxcest. To top it off WW II is gearing up. Pretty good show.

I have talked about Turkish shows way too many times on DB because my favorite shows still remain Turkish. I am glad someone else talked about them this time. My favorite is Muthesem Yuzyil (Magnificient Century). Strong acting, strong story. Nothing beats it but one that comes close is Fatmagul sucu ne, again amazing everything acting and story plus direction. Moreover, you could check Karadayi by the same actor in Ezel. Or the cult favorite Ask-i-Memnu and Asi (having the actress of KPA). I never really saw Ezel and KPA but I heard they were good.
I think Muhtesem Yuzyil was subbed by Netflix but only the first season when it has 4 and it was taken down then. So I guess, you might find it ripped somewhere. For Fatmagul I think subs were available online. They were dubbed in my language so I never came across looking for subs. I think Turkish dramas have the strongest acting and music. Plus they are famous but they prefer selling their rights to different countries rather than allowing subbing like kdramas which later spread into illegal sites too. That is why they are hardly found online hence, they lose on some audience.

Hi Everyone! Happy New Year! As always, I hope you are all doing well.

Whether you have resolutions or not, I wish all the Beanies a great 2019. I hope positive things come your way this year. ....... I have to share that before 2018 was over I was able to get my 24th bean as I managed to finish Room No. 9! I finished watching it with a day to spare, so it all worked out.

The Last Empress - This is seriously so much fun to watch!

My Strange Hero - I gave this a try and to my surprise, as much as I like Yoo Seung-ho, I'm saddened to report that this drama just didn't work for me.

SKY Castle - Who would've thought this would become the must watch show it's turned out to be. It just continues to get better with each episode. ....... Coach Kim is one interesting character for sure. Apparently the woman gets results, but has it all been a front for a hidden agenda? Hmmm....

Definitely looking forward to several of the new shows coming up. May we all find new favorites in the coming year!

That's all for now. Everyone take care and and have a great Friday!

Happy New Year and Happy OT! the first OT of the Year!!!

It's been a nice, quiet New Year for me, on the work front … just the way I like it. Getting busy at work will be happening all too soon, and my volunteer work is also just gearing up. However it's not so peaceful on the home front, but the issues are hopefully slowly being worked out.

I've been very thankful that while I've been facing sudden worry and challenges on the family side, at the same time and sort of out of the blue, unexpected persons, from far away, rallied to help and support in ways I never knew I'd need. Because the problems needed more talking out and patient understanding, better communication ensued, a deeper sense of warmth and more hope has emerged. From the sadness and pain came good and positive things.

Amazingly, I've been quite fine. I've cried and prayed (never prayed so fervently!) and those prayers have been answered and are still in the process of being answered. Thoughts that galvanised me to action I would never have taken, came at opportune times, and the action led to possible solutions. I feel that I've been so ok throughout even the more trying times, that I know the burden was not carried solely by me.

I don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but now more than a month after the official celebration, I find myself thankful to God and friends and family.

An indication of how ok I am is that I've not stopped relaxing happily here at DB, fully enjoying the many minutes online and even catching the shows to spazz about, all through the difficult times. Being at peace here has helped tide me over the darker days and it is such a blessing.

Here's wishing us all more dawning light and brightness this New Year!

Thank you very much for your wishes, hopes, prayers and support. You're some of the wonderful people who make this place such a haven of comfort and peace.

To @javinne's question, I do celebrate both Christmas and New Year and Easter too!! And I'm glad that whether or not we do, we belong in this community.

I know that there will be more ups and downs , lots of both smiles and tears. Some solutions are not yet visible, others come miraculously. I find peace (but sometimes with difficulty) in that I can but try my best with the little I know and can do, and with prayer, leave the rest to God.

Yes @ally-le, prayer does work. It has given me added perspective and many graces for living through the tough times. Best of all, it has helped me give thanks for the many blessings that I'd have missed, if I'd never had any pain or never prayed.

Peace and grace and blessings to All!

I'm surprised by how little TV show I watched this holiday. This week I only watched two dramas Deep Rooted Tree and El Ministerial Del Tiempo season 2. I have 30 minutes left to finish DRT, maybe tommorow I'll finish it. I put EMDT on hold at episode when Julian in Fillipinas. I still don't buy a potential romance between Amelia and Julian. Overall I like this season more than the previous one. Napoleon episode is my favorite, especially the dinner scene of Agustias and Napoleon😂😂
I also like the new team member, Chapino, so far he's been a great addition with his broad knowledge of pop culture 😄

Most of the time I watch TV on my way to work, or in-between classes. Now I have a lot of free time for dramas, I don't feel like to watch anything.

At the moment I've still got 1 more episode of Encounter/Boyfriend to watch, but I'm actually re-watching the webdrama that I mentioned, One Sunny Day and it's as good as I remember it. Love seeing So Ji Sub (rounder face!) with Kim Ji Won (so pretty). 😃

Yes, I did that. Currently I'm reading Sapien History of Human Kind and planning to read Don Quixote after I finish this one. El Ministerio Del Tiempo made me realize I never read Don Quixote , only watched the cartoon when I was a kid. Honestly, I'm not a big reader. Almost never read anything last year except newspapers or emails from my superiors. If I found any interesting tv shows, probably I'm going to leave my readings in a heartbeat 😄
I think I have checked One Sunny Day, it didn't work for me at the time. The premise is actually interesting, maybe I was just not in the right mood.
Boyfriend is great, but I don't want to get anxious every week waiting for the next episode, so I'll wait to pick it up in the penultimate week before finale.
For now I'm just sticked to books and Hay Day 😂

OT week 99! Knocking on that door to 100 weeks on the OT! How was your week? So, I need some advice. Going to be going to LA next week—those of you who know me, I need some great (not just good) foodie recs for Asian food there (Korean, Viet, Thai, Indian, Chinese/dim sum--it’s all fair game)! LA Beanies, it’s time for you to shine! Kids are still out of school, so we’ve been spending a lot of family time, playing the games they got for Christmas. Monopoly Cheater’s Edition, Unstable Unicorns, and laser tag have all been huge hits this break. Plane trip and I’m going to be downloading some Kdrama content. Thinking about finally starting My Ahjusshi! Anyone with me? And there’s still Dae Guem and Top Star that I’d like to binge. Any votes on what I should watch first?

On the dramafront, Memories of Alhambra continues to entertain. I was totally not expecting the zombie apocalypse which I think was a good thing, and totally not expecting Secretary’s Seo’s demise either. Although, my husband kept telling me he was going to die the second he was given that pistol. Hyun Bin also continues to impress me, which, again, I was not expecting. So, all in all, a drama that exceeds my expectations. I’d like to see how the OTP builds their relationship though. It’s just treading on thin ice right now, and I’m like a lot of people and don’t really subscribe to it yet.

But I’m all in with the OTP in Encounter/Boyfriend. Man, they just turned it up several degrees in episode 10. Like, it was a warm cup of hot chocolate before, and now it’s a boiling pot of expresso. It’s still a beautiful show, and the camera work is exceptional, the lighting director is a genius in my opinion. And @kdramaswimmer would appreciate the end of episode 10. I hope she’s seen it. I was distracted by the overuse of a certain photography effect, but it’s a small thing. Less is more in this show, and I would have preferred less of this effect. My heart is so calm when I watch this. I hope it doesn’t go too makjang, I’m just not in the mood right now.

My daughter continues to re-watch Love O2O. That is all.

Conversation:

Me: What do you plan to do in LA?

Hubby: Find a 20-something-year-old who needs a sugar-daddy.

Me: I don’t know why you’re dragging your feet about going to Korea, they’re a dime a dozen there. You just need to park yourself in front of an entertainment agency. They’d all be like….*looking for the word—I’m old* “Oh, AHJUSSSHI!”

Hubby: Don’t you mean, “OPPPAAA?” *as he accosts me with all this aeygo and a cheesy hug—Am I in a kdrama right now?*

Me: Oh, no, that’s horrible! You’d definitely be an Ahjusshi. *giggling uncontrollably*

Hubby: “Oppa! Oppa! Oppa!”

Me: STAAAAAHPPPP! If Gong Yoo is an Ahjusshi at 37, you are definitely one at 41! *runs away from more aeygo and hugs*

If you are in the mood for an old school and slightly silly rom-com I suggest Da Geum. The first episode is a bit over the top but it settles down after that, and Shin Dong-wook is having a blast which is what is keeping me watching. The slow and not great subs for Top Star have put that one on hold for me for now. I'm hoping Netflix or someone has plans to pick up the license for this soon. However, if you want to think, feel, and soak in amazing writing, directing, and cinematography....then My Ahjussi is the ticket. Keep your tissues handy.

Ally's Ahjussi continues to set the bar high for significant others. When does your reality show start airing?

Ktown LA eats:

Kang Ho Dong's Baekjeong
(2 hr wait for dinner, but lunchtime is less busy - totally worth the wait!)
caveat: don't go with just 2 people as i did with my daughter, you won't be able to finish all the food!!

Park's BBQ
if you want to perhaps see any Korean Idols (if performing in town) or even actors (they have a photo wall of celebs), try going here, but you must be seated upstairs if you wanna peek.

I am a really big foodie and heading to LA in a few months too! Many of my friends have been raving about ốc án lẩu, a Vietnamese seafood restaurant. I’m Viet and my Viet family and friends all love it. (Never been so just word of mouth). Popular places I’ve also heard about through YouTube/Instagram are quarters for Kbbq from the buzzfeed worth it video, Din Tai Fung is famous for soup dumplings. Ramen is pretty trendy on the west coast, especially dipping ramen called tsukemen. Orange County is where it is at for large asian eats in Cali, you prob can’t go wrong.

Any idea what happened to the following announced K-Dramas?:

Are these canceled or re-named?

Happy (first weekend of) 2019 Beanies!

I am a bit late because I just came back from a small work gathering to celebrate my colleague’s retirement. Tomorrow I am officially ending my Korean classes with lunch and Sejong 3 graduation (I hope!) I will continue Sejong 4 in self-study with my friend, because it was time to close that chapter and move on to other Saturday activities.

I am on leave the whole week, so I had fun eating and spending time with my friends at my place on new year’s eve, without worries about work. As a tradition we always write and hand out personalized Christmas cards, which are more like platonic love letters, since we always reflect on the past year and predict the next with an abundance of compliments and encouragements. Beats presents anytime!

However, I spend most of my free time trying and failing to get out of the GOT7 pit. I finally understand who Jackson Wang is, what a delight! :) At first I was angry with @raonah for the horrible suggestion to check them out. Then I saw her bias JB smile, while rocking pineapple hair, mullets and just looking my senior by at least 5 years why he is in fact younger… As a result I have decided to offer my sympathy instead. You poor Ahgase @raonah ;) Not that I am that much better off, since Mark Tuan makes me feel like a Teenager ;). Yeah, I am already regretting my decision to check out more K-pop! :p

Don't worry about JB being younger than you. Remember, "If he's handsome, he's oppa" 😍 If you have any questions about GOT7, let me know. I recommend their reality shows to learn more about them. Hard Carry Season 1 and 2 are on vlive. Real GOT7 seasons 1-4, GOT7ing, and GOT2Day are on youtube. GOT2day is especially helpful if you're trying to learn their names because it's just two of them talking to each other so you can study their faces really well.

Happy New Year Beanies! I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday and New Years. I spent it binge watching dramas with my mom, watching movies with my family, eating and being lazy. It was brilliant.

Bloody Romance Binge watched almost all of this in a couple days. It was good, not my favorite cdrama but still quite enjoyable. Wan Mei did get better as the drama progressed but was still the Worst Assassin Ever™. I was also severely disappointed there was not a single kiss in this entire drama. That lost points because I need lots of make-out sessions! The ending was also quite disappointing despite it ending with possible hope, but it still felt cheap. I did read some summaries of what happens after the drama, just wish it was included in the drama itself. Qu Chuxiao was hot.

Lion Pride A Taiwanese drama I found on Netflix. It seems low budget and the acting isn't the greatest and the plot can feel a bit silly and unrealistic but it's still a weirdly entertaining show. Yen Tsao is super attractive which makes up for things. An easy to watch drama.

Ever Night Started this and having a bit of a hard time watching it. Chen Feiyu is a pretty bad actor who is extremely green and makes the weirdest facial expressions. Like, sometimes I'm not sure what emotion he is trying to portray. Thankfully it's a pretty big cast that doesn't just focus on his character or I would have dropped it within the first couple episodes. I'm also not quite sure exactly what is happening right now as the story seems quite complex with tons of characters being introduced constantly. I'm only about 7 episodes in so I'm sure as things progress it will become more clear. I've kinda put the drama on hold for now though.

I think that this is the week that I am officially burnt out on all the craziness in The Last Empress. I don’t have any empathy for the characters that I likely am supposed to have empathy for. I don’t like watching female characters being physically tortured, even if they are villains. I don’t like watching a protagonist directing the torture, no matter the reason. I don’t like the attempts to make the Emperor more endearing and funny. There’s a lot of repetitiveness to the plot due to the length of the drama, to the point of ridiculousness. Let’s face it, the Emperor and the Dowager would have no problem getting rid of the Empress if it were not that weeks of airtime need to be filled.

I found myself feeling something similar related to the torture mechanisms. I found myself super bothered by the fact that Chief Guard knows about it and is using it himself...and now I'm worried I can't really see him as heroic in any sense. TBH But I'll finish the show---especially because I'm hoping for more cute things from Yoon and Oh Hello (best name ever). I'd watch that spinoff every day.

TGIF! Happy new year! Thanks to drama preemption, I had some extra time and ended up watching God's quiz5 which I enjoyed it. I love Ryu Duk-hwan (sorry he has(again and again) taller acting partners, but he looks adorable). Btw how awesome is the Memories of the Alhambra? Episodes 10 was so gripping and I can't wait to watch the next episode. I've enjoyed many of this writer's projects (High Kick, Coffee house, Queen In-Hyeon's man, Nine, Three musketeers, W: Two world) so I tried to look up her interview.

First, per Wiki[and the like] the writer Song Jae-jung (45) made her debut in 1996 and kept working on SBS sitcoms- Soon Poong Clinic in 1998, The Unstoppables in 2000, Do the Right Thing in 2002, Cute or Crazy in 2005, and Unstoppable High Kick in 2006. She made a new attempt to mix a sitcom, drama and mystery in the hit drama "Unstoppable High Kick" (First one in 3 High Kick series, which raised Jung Il-woo to stardom). Next, Song did the comical thriller "The Secret of Keu Keu Island" (2008) which was parody of American series "Lost". The show failed ratings-wise and ended up cut short, but loved by the viewers who watched the show. Writer Song changed to write dramas with "Coffee House" (2010).

Song's interests in the mystery plot showed in her dramas too. Song is excellent in story tugging ability and the dramas Queen In-Hyeon's Man(2012), Nine(2013), W(2016) were the works which maximized such strength, and received praises during the broadcasts. One thing regrettable was that all her projects had some criticism/refute except Queen In-Hyeon's Man. "Nine" suffered with plagiarism criticism because it was aired before copyright issue was resolved, and "Three Musketeers"(2014) didn't meet the expectations or have good review on storytelling like her previous works. The review was good for "W", but the viewers were disappointed with the ending (and plots in later episodes). The only project complimented without any issue was "Queen In-Hyeon's Man".(Well, I remember some beanies had problem with this show too)

Writer Song is notorious for giving the male lead the hard time in the show. Ji Hyun-woo in "Queen In-Hyeon's Man" had dying acting all through the show because the condition for time travel was death. And Lee Jin-wook in "Nine" had frequent fighting scenes, and scenes he was stabbed, almost drowned, or hit by the car. Even Lee Jong-suk in "W" was stabbed and shot by a gun. (and "Memories of the Alhambra" is no exception as we all know)
Writer Song received Scriptwriter(and the like) awards for the "W"(2016), "Nine"(2013), "High Kick"(2007) and "Do the Right Thing"(2003).

Song talked about how she got into the business in an old interview.[storyofseoul.com, 2005.06.01] At that time she was working on the sitcom "Cute or Crazy" with PD Kim Byung-wook. Song said the most important process in a sitcom project is meeting on items which each writer brings in 30-40 ideas...

... "We evaluate each idea objectively, in war-like atmosphere. While doing it, there is an item stands out. With it centered, situations are established and story is compiled." Song repeats writing and fixing scripts -about 70 pages for 5 days a week. "I couldn't deal with it physically. I changed to become a Morning person because of health issue."

She graduated majoring in mass communications(newspapers and broadcasting) in college. "I made bad attendance. I used to read cartoon lying on the grass or went to Noraebang with friends. We were Noraebang 1st generation." After graduation, she joined broadcasting academy because she wanted to write dramas. One time the instructor gave a homework to write a conte for the variety "Our Happy Saturday", and her and her friend's works were chosen. Since then she worked 10 years as a writer. How she got into sitcom writing? Two years after she started working, a senior writer told her one time to summarize after watching all sitcoms in a foreign sitcom channel. "I cursed. It was hard to understand because they spoke English. I had so much difficulties. But that experience became huge help later." As Song worked on it, she was drawn into the charms of sitcom, and she was chosen as the main writer of the hit sitcom "Soon Poong Clinic". It required strict control over herself because of physical and mental burden- it had the due date every week. "There were writers who quit. If you can't control your emotion, you can't do this work."

Song likes going on a trip. "I like to travel. Because I was in photography club in college, I like taking picture. I travel here and there and have fun taking pictures." She also reads books and watches movies as much as possible. "When you read the scripts, you can see writer's depth right away. Not the academic depth, but that person's depth. If you don't' want to be a shallow writer, you have to keep reading/watching books, films, cartoons whatever, and make efforts." Song said she reads books deliberately with a plan made up like studying even during a break. "It is Professional disease".

Writer Song garnered huge interests with the drama "W', and had press conference/interview after the show completed in 2016. "W" centers “two worlds”- the real world and a fantasy world inside a webtoon. Previously Song explained the meaning of the title "W". "It has two meanings. First, it means "Who" and "Why", because the setup is for Kang Chul to find who and why his family was killed. Secondly, it means "Wonder World". Like Alice's in Wonderland, it is bitter sweet strange world in cartoon Yeon-joo sucked into suddenly."

Continues with her interesting interview...

Here is Song Jae-jung's Q&A session on "W".[chosun/OSEN, enter.etoday/BizEnter, asiatoday, 2016.09.20]
Q: How do you feel now that the drama is finished?
Song: I feel lost for receiving so much praise for this project. I came out after staying in the work room for 2-3 months and received overwhelming complements. There was time I felt unfair because my work was underestimated, but I find being overestimated is scarier.
I am frightened at this moment because all of you came to see me for real.

Q: How "W" was created?
Song: I tried to start from a mad painter who did the pure art. I got the motive from Goya's painting. But as I worked, I found that depicting the painting itself on the screen was really hard. So I changed to more approachable cartoon. For the characters, wouldn't creators have same concern? When they create something, whether they should treat the object as a tool, or a soul? - I debate about that all the time.

Q: You seem prefer teleport/time-jump shows, shown in Nine, Queen In-hyeon's man and W.
Song: I changed to write dramas from doing sitcom and it was not because I had complaint. I wrote dramas because I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something I couldn't express in sitcom. First if I do a drama, I don't have to do it myself, so I could pick a unique subject. The reason I do many "teleport" stories are because they allow dramatic situations. I like such situations, but in reality dangerous things like flying or chasing can be given only to spy or soldier characters, not ordinary people. But it is possible for common people to do such things though teleport. I am more interested in ordinary person encountering special incidents.

Q: There are many discussions on the ending which includes Kang Chul coming into the real world.
Song: Scripts is my creation, but the project as whole is not mine. Ending is also something I wrote, but I think judgment is the viewers' share. I also don't feel good killing the characters. I felt guilt and sorry as I sent Oh Seong-moo(villain/Yeon-joo's father) away. I was sorry to the actors and characters when I wrote "Nine" also. I remember I had hard time for a year after I sent the character away in "Nine".

I've always had bad responses about endings, but it is just me- I've never had much interests on the ending. No interest whatsoever if ending is happy or sad when I watch a movie or drama. But I was cursed so much about writing the ending without much thoughts, thinking others have same thoughts as me, that now I pay a little attention. "W"'s ending was not happy or sad either. It ended with the hint leads might become happy once their wounds are cured. The viewers might not be satisfied, but it was my best.

...Q:You became talk of town by opening the scripts to the public before final episode aired.
Song:I think scripts need to be made available to the public. When I was dreaming of becoming a writer, I didn't have an opportunity to meet a script. I only saw what the script was for the first time after I entered the station. I experienced frustration about it, so I decided to do this. I felt bad only people in the area could see the scripts when they are actually writings for public. There were times I published my scripts, but they came out a few months after the show ended. So I thought I should release them when it is the most 'hot'. I released it with the feel of 'extra' when we only had 1 episode left. But I had no idea it would make the no.1 on real-time search on-line. (Song said previously she felt guilty when she saw the comment "The drama bullying the viewers", so she released the scripts from ep 1 to 15 so that viewers could watch the finale episode enjoying more.)

You can think parent/child relation when a writer creates a character. I had questions like if parents have ownership on their children, or children's turning point is parents ever since I was young. That thought moved to my works once I became the writer. As you write, your creation moves on its own from a certain point. Since it is a broadcast show, it changes depending on which and how actors act, and how director directs. It might be like how you feel when you send your child away on his/her marriage. When time to part comes, you might feel hurt, or when it takes different direction, you might feel disappointment. My conclusion after I've written for 20 years is that my creations are not completely mine. I am just person who starts. I think I sow the seed, but it grew by itself. That is why I made the scripts available. I wrote it, scripts is mine but projects belong to everyone. Interpretation of the project is up to each person. Also scripts are book, but I released the file itself. I hope people play with it, fix it thinking "It will be nice if I change this line this way." It will be wonderful if someone changes my scripts to look better and niftier.

Q: The ending of drama was somewhat different from the script released.(In the script, the last scene was in the hospital. Kang Chul told Yeon-joo her father Seong-moo was in a mental hospital and said he wanted to stay there, showing his letter and picture. It ends with them reading the letter together, with the narration.)
Song: Actually I haven't watched episode 15 and 16. It is very had habit, but I get so exhausted when I finish writing. I was so sick that I couldn't watch. I heard the ending was changed. I only found out how exactly changed by reading the article. It is delicate issue -the script is totally mine, but I think actors and directors can have different ideas.

Q: Is the "W" the most difficult work among all you have written?
Song: No. The most difficult work was...

reply

Required fields are marked *

..."High Kick". Because it was collaboration, people's opinions were divided. There was character each person favored.

Q: If you have to evaluate Lee Jong-suk and Han Hyo-joo as the writer?
Song: I am very grateful to Lee Jong-suk ssi. First, I established a cartoon character and he really looked good like a cartoon character. Lee Jong-suk ssi made this drama believable. What could've we done if he didn't look like in the cartoon. Finding a person who looked like a cartoon character was the most important. I was so impressed after watching the first episode. Also Kang Chul was very mature character. I think acting must've been really difficult because setup was the image of superman who mastered how world worked with no fear, no doubts. Lee Jong-suk ssi himself said "I don't have anything in common with Kang Chul." Kang Chul was 30 years old but his mental age was 45- my age. If anyone who met Lee Jong-suk ssi he/she would know that he is 180degree different from Kang Chul. It must've been even harder to act as show progressed, but Lee didn't lose his focus to the end. Then again I think Lee Jong-suk ssi was able to do variety of acting through "W". Since he died and came alive three times in the drama, his acting spectrum might have been widened, I think. I can expect he would show more confident acting henceforth.

To Han Hyo-joo ssi, I am just regretful because I only awarded her half happiness at the end. She must've had huge emotion consumption because there were many crying scenes. (So it is norm her drama's heroine cries? hurl Alhambra! I even remember how people complained about crown princess' crying in "Three Musketeers".) It was very exhausting role- she had to run a lot, cry a lot, but she did well, and I am sorry about that part. Also she didn't doll up to be true to the doctor role. Han Hyo-joo ssi had to follow emotion line which was hard to express. As I told two different stories at the same time, I forced tying the female lead going to the world like a romance cartoon with having the conflict with the creator, so Oh Yeon-joo fell into confusing situation. Oh Seong-moo was 'sad', Kang Chul was 'happy', but Yeon-joo was neither. I have to pay her the debt I owe later for sure.
One part I feel disappointed is that I wanted to see more lovey dovey scenes between Kang Chul and Yeon-joo. I wanted to draw many bright images, but as I wrote I couldn't help but following the story. I feel unsatisfied on the part I didn't insert many images of two people being in love in romantic and comfortable way.

Q: How do you work?
Song: When I did sitcom, it was collaboration. That was the hardest part. As doing it everyone had own favorite children. I wonder it was the start of dividing into parties. I had enormous hardship. Some couple had happy ending, and some had sad ending. I think since then I didn't write love triangle. And because I've worked as team for a long time, I still ask myself and...

...answer myself while working. If someone sees me, he/she might think I have multi-personalities. I do 3 people roles talking and discussing "I am going to raise objection like this", doing my own show while writing. I have an assistant writer for over 7 years, and she is doing 1 person role in my show. Maybe that is why I could approach to public in my works even barely, not being all peculiar.

Q: There were reactions the viewers having hard time to follow. Actually the ratings stalled as the show progressed in later episodes.
Song: Ratings are very very important, but I can't do anything about it. My heart beats fast on the day ratings come out. I know there are people who misunderstand me, but I really write having ratings on mind. I am the viewer also, and have certain drama, certain movie I like. I used to write with misjudgment other people would like it because I like it, but I realized that is not so. I like a fast-paced, curiosity-inciting work. But I realized my taste is not widely held, so I try to listen to others, but that does not always work.
The writer's survival depends on the ratings. It doesn't give me worthy feeling, but it is driving force to live- The force to make me not wavering. Fortunately I think they made "W" well in the beginning, so I was able to write the later portion with less burden.

Q: The source of teleporting in "W" was Kang Chul's awareness. Unlike Nine's incense, In-hyeon's man's talisman, there was no distinctive medium. There were opinions that was the reason the show was difficult to follow.
Song: Unlike two predecessors, "W" had setup of teleporting on the lead's free will, and I think I didn't consider the viewers fully. There was clear vehicle before and because it didn't change, the viewers followed easily once I showed it. But with "W", I thought it could be hard to grasp being portrayed on the screen. It was my mistake. I wrote excited myself when I didn't think it could be difficult if it was depicted on the screen. I also felt "Why is this?" while watching as the show progressed. I understood my idea, but as I watched the broadcast, I thought "Well it would not be easy for the viewers."

Q: You had a fresh try with "W". Is there a reason you set up free will as the means for teleporting?
Song: Up until "Nine" I was obsessed with logic, but my idea changed in a few months. In recent years, "Memories of murder" or American series "CSI" were hugely popular. So I thought logic was important. But on some point I felt people got bored. As I read the books I became to pursue natural realism. Viewers might feel foreign because it is new, but I think it might become a trend. Rather than scientific explanation, wouldn't the free, unrestricted expressing approach of individual's idea to change situations be interesting? I hope "W" is an early step for such view.

...Q: There were opinions that "W" would've been better if it were pre-production.
Song: I think you have to have significant know-how to make a pre-produced show. Drama runs long unlike a film. The hardest thing in a drama is continuing the emotion/mood line. It needs the experts who can connect well, act and portray well, otherwise it will be like gambling.
Q:There are many people who expect your romance genre projects. Do you have a plan for your next project?
Song: I want to, but I am not confident. Previously I wrote understanding 20s' love. But now I write going down the memory lane. I lost confidence thinking "Do kids do like this these days?". So I can't write even if I want to. I was stunned because I put 45 year old's mind into Kang Chul when I set his age up as 30. I think I have to make the lead's age older. If I write a romance, I wonder it would be middle aged people's love. I have an item about my next project but it is so dark that I wonder if it can be broadcasted. Anyway for now I am scared about being Judged too highly. I plan to stay low for a while until overwhelming reaction gets forgotten.

Well, I remember some viewers (including beanies) were upset about the writer's (don't care) remark on ending when "W" ended. I am glad the writer explained her position in the interview. Still I hope she gives satisfying/convincing/credible ending for Alhambra. I saw the comments in the recap post "Maybe she learned from reactions to W"- well, it seems the writer is trying. Meanwhile give me the next episode (of Alhambra) already!

Off-the-topic, but talking about Three Musketeers, I miss Headsno2's (and Gummimochi's) recaps. Wouldn't it be nice if she stops by to say Hi? (did she?)

On the foster kitten front: I currently have a brown tabby named Zonzo. He is such a cutie but has a biting problem. He bites ALL the time. Doesn't like to be touched either. He does show affection by coming to sleep next to me on the sofa. But the biting and the lack of purring makes it hard to bond with him. He does like sucking and kneading a ball of yarn which is adorable but makes me wonder if he was removed from his mom too early.

Going to return him today since he's well over 2 lbs and hopefully pick up another one. I think there's a shortage at the shelter now since it's "winter".

That is unusual behavior!

Is there something that was suddenly introduced in the house that may be causing him stress/anxiety?

Could also be due to a urinary tract infection, you should have him checked out at the vet.

It could be urinary tract infection or kidney issues, better take him to vet as soon as possible.

I recommend LingoDeer for Asian languages, it have better learning tips and more logical structure. I tried both and I learned more from LingoDeer (Korean).

Was just about to say the same thing about learning Korean on Duolingo - didn't find it very intuitive in that format, especially because as an English speaker, Korean grammar is very different and there are lots of rules to learn. Happy learning :)

The Lingodeer format is much easier to work with, and I found the audio to be clearer too.

It has been three months I'm learning britton language (aka brezhoneg) and it's fun. I'm glad I'm back to school at my age and the courses are not stressful, no homework, no exams for now. It's like a dream school. Starting from next week we should talk only in britton 🤔, it will be hard but let's try to make it work 😉😊 Happy merry cheerful successful healthy and lucky year 2019 to you all!!!

It seems people watch The Last Empress while cursing its Makjang plot. Did you ever wonder why the writer writes Makjang dramas? Ratings?
[sports-g.com, 2018.12.06] The Last Empress is written by Kim Soon-ok (47) who penned in legendary Makjang dramas such as Wife's Temptation, Jang Bo-ri, My Daughter Geum Sa-wol, etc. There are two response on her dramas- one with criticism and accusation, and the other with praise as the writer with "God's Pen" (along with Goblin's Kim Eun-sook and Signal's Kim Eun-hee).
Why writer Kim writes Makjang dramas? Kim mentioned in an interview. "I don't have desire to relay great message or make everyone sobbing(impressed) as a drama writer. All I want is to give hope of life to people who don't have any hope enough wishing to die today, lonely old people who wait for a phone call from their children in vain and such. Waiting for my drama- if that itself can be their pleasure in their lives, that is the most valuable to me. I believe there are people who write great and good projects, unlike me. I just want to write a drama which makes some unfortunate person who wanted to kill him/herself think "Wait, I can't die today because I am so curious about tomorrow's episode." , a drama people can forget their hardship and sadness and gain the strength and hope through it - I want to write such dramas."
hmmm
