Go Sung-hee up to romance Park Hyung-shik in Suits

We’re finally hearing about potential casting for a leading lady in the K-drama remake of American television series Suits, which early on secured Jang Dong-gun (VIP, A Gentleman’s Dignity) and Park Hyung-shik (Strong Woman Do Bong-soon) to headline. Now Go Sung-hee (While You Were Sleeping) has reportedly received an offer, which she is currently considering.

The drama centers around an unconventional duo at a top corporate law firm: One is a college dropout and legal genius who takes the bar exam for other people, and the other is the corporate lawyer who hires him at his firm despite knowing he doesn’t have a law degree. That’s because he values the younger man’s combination of legal knowledge and street smarts, but it means that his lack of credentials must remain a secret between only the two of them. Jang Dong-gun will play the immensely successful older lawyer and Park Hyung-shik the genius with a superhuman memory, in a spot-on bit of casting.

The character Go Sung-hee has been offered is the chief legal assistant at the Kang & Ham law firm where everyone works, and is described as a leading female role. The character is quite good at her job but does have an inferiority complex toward the lawyers, and she’ll have a loveline with Park Hyung-shik. Well… maybe he’ll have enough charisma for the both of them? Or maybe the oodles of charisma between the two leading men will be enough for the show, which is really more of a bromance than a romance? That’s about as optimistic as I’ll dare to get about Go Sung-hee, because she does tend to suck the charisma out of the room, though perhaps the bland characters she’s played can be partly to blame (Spy, Records of a Night Watchman, Miss Korea).

Whether or not she takes the Suits role, we’ll be seeing Go Sung-hee first in the upcoming tvN drama Mother with Lee Bo-young. (In fact, I wonder if she’ll be better there, playing an abusive and neglectful single mother with an opportunity for a range of emotional acting, because the generic nice girls are not her forte.)

Suits will air on KBS as a Wednesday-Thursday drama with a premiere scheduled for early spring.

I'm not familiar with her acting but Rachel Zane is a character that needs a good actress. uugghh I felt bad for this remake already :( I'm a fan of the original and I just hope they do justice. and plss get a bad-ass actress for the role of Donna and Jessica!

Gah my thoughts exactly, i mean i love rachel but if it weren't for meghan her character is rather generic and bland. Meghan is arguably a great actress but she definitely brings life to rachel.
Donna though she's such a tricky character to play so they NEED a good actress

Actually there is chae jung ahn who is already casted as Donna but the news never made it here in DB.
AM i the only one who thinks that SUITS can survive without Rachel because she can be written as another male character and Mike Ross can live without a loveline?
Don't get me wrong, I would love to have female bad ass characters but SUITS is a male-centric drama and focused more in harvey-mike relationship/banterings.

"That’s about as optimistic as I’ll dare to get about Go Sung-hee, because she does tend to suck the charisma out of the room..."

Javabeans, I love you. No one draws blood with this level of efficiency.

I am a little surprised that the show did not cast Park Hyung-sik's romantic interest with someone that is of higher profile and/or popularity. But maybe this is the right approach since her character has an inferiority complex?

At the moment it is hard for me to imagine the SWDBS-level of cute with this pairing, and with PHS I crave that kind of chemistry!

"...show did not cast Park Hyung-sik's romantic interest with someone that is of higher profile and/or popularity." I agree with this! But I also wonder if Park Hyung Sik is rather disproportionaltely popular amongst the db community, and a more-normal popular within his home country?

Either way, I'm not very fond of the American original, so I have even lower hopes for this one. For Park Hyung Sik, I hope it's good.

Hehe I wonder which actresses we can fantasy cast who are disproportionately popular among the DB community? Park Eun-bin? Kong Seung-Yeon?

I am not usually into legal dramas because they seemed to be filled with logic fails, or even just everyday-common-sense fails. I can imagine it would be immensely difficult for you to stomach them as someone in the legal profession!

I think it depends. To know if they are also popular in their own country, we can also see the amount of CFs, awards they got after their project.

Park Hyun-sik only had SWDBS which gave him more popularity and his idol image didn't really helping his acting career either,to be honest without Park Bo-young as his partner in that drama, maybe that drama and that pairing won't get that much attention and that high rating. Park Hyun-sik might not at the level of Park Bo-gum in SK, yet (if we compare among the actors in the similar group). He is in my opinion, still a rising actor there. He changed his agency last year to the one which also managed Yoo Ah-in & Song Hye-kyo so maybe this is a good sign for his acting career.

3

I think it depends on the actor. Just like with our differences in the dramas we appreciate, the actors we appreciate are bound to differ.

But, of course, sometimes they intersect. Korea LOVES Lee Seung-gi and so do we!

The rom.com heros and heroines are quite popular here and most are popular in Korea as well.

From the early hallyu days and towards the end of the golden era, there were a great mix of high profile and high quality dramas that propel it's main cast into stardom.
I've never seen " Jealousy" 1992 that started the hallyu wave but JB and GF mentioned it as their first crack drama (if I remember correctly).
I'm totally going to mess up some actors and timeline of popularity so don't shoot me.

Pre 2007 or pre DB : Bae Yoon-jong, Lee Young-ae, Go Hyun-jung, Choi Min-soo, Chae Si-ra, Choi Ji-woo, Kim Hye-soo, Kim Sun-ah, Kim Hee-sun, Hyun-bin, Won-bin, Song Hye-go, Rain, Song Seung-heon, Gong Yoo, Lee Dong-wook, Lee Da-hae etc etc.

Early DB (2007) - (2011)-ish: Yoon Eun-hye, Cha Tae-hyun, Eric, Jang Hyuk, Lee Sun-kyun, Kim Myung-min, Go Soo, Lee Min-ho, Park Shin-hye, Jang Keun-suk, Lee Seung-gi, Cha Seung-won, Kim Rae-won, Kim Nam-gil, Kam Ji-hwan, Yoo Ah-in, Song Joong-ki, Jo Won, Ji Chang-wook etc etc.
(Excluding popular child actors).

I haven't been in the mood for rom.com lately but I know that the likes of Park Bo-gum, Ryu Jun-yeol, etc are very popular here and in Korea.

"Records of a Night Watchman" was a fail all around. I wouldn't even blame any of the actors.
I like her and Seo Ye-ji and they both have shown great progress and I'd root for that.
"Miss Korea" was her first drama. I don't know what everyone was expecting from her.

When she is given a good role like in "Beautiful Bride" she does well. I'd watch her with Kim Mu-yeol anytime.

A bland role will just be bland because she is still green and she doesn't have someone like Go Hyun-jung's commanding presence, charisma and experience to elevate a bland role into something better.

We have a lot of pretty boys with no charisma but we are always so harsh on the girls.

It’s sadly so true. Bland actors aren’t immune to criticism in the drama fan community (just look at the reactions when Taecyeon was announced as Kim So-hyun’s partner in Let’s Fight Ghost lol) but articles about actress casting news almost always attract more harsh criticism. It’s a pity, especially when the international drama community is overwhelmingly female. I understand that physical attraction plays a part in the enjoyment of watching dramas for some people so some fans are more forgiving of male “eye candy” no matter how terrible they are at emoting, but it’s still so frustrating. 😕

Well, a matter of preference for acting chops is also one of the reason different view of appreciation towards actor I guess. One person love restain and more subtle approach kind of acting. But someone else might love the actor show more emotion to the point of overload thespian. For me it's work both way. depending on the scene.

And when we love certain actor, we are just blind to assume they will always doing a great job regardless of the material which is not always the case. It's happen to me alot of time.

I agree. She might be not the greatest actress, but she was decent in the show I watched she was in My beautiful bride and spy. And the character is quite challenging. Now I can't wait to watch her in Mother since that character is quite challenging based on description. i sallute her to choose this kind of project. It's show her willingness to improve.

I soooo agree this.
Thank you for giving your rationalization about her previous roles, I only knew her through While You Were Sleeping but I liked her there, little character development but she acted it out decently, love her own version of sassiness. Next of course to Lee Bo Young, I'm excited to see more of her in Mother.

She's quite scene stealer at My Beautiful Bride and I thought that was because Lee Si-Young character ain't written well.

Go Sung Hee improved by miles in While You Were Sleeping; enough to make me hopeful about her performance in this role. Although Rachel has a pretty significant part in the drama; the plot is really driven by the chemistry between the two males, and Donna, and of course, the mighty Jessica and Lewis (he was gold).

I’m curious to know what actors would be playing those roles. The drama might actually survive and do well with a good writer and a strong ensemble cast.

I'm thinking GSH now in her WYWS character and I cannot picture her in a romantic arc with PHY (yet?) However, I can definitely see her having a platonic relationship with him. You know, them knowing they could be something (with feelings and all) but would rather stay cool about it because they're better as work partners.

As much as I loved the original serie the premise never made sense to me. One of the best lawyers thought it would be a good idea to risk everything to work with a prodigy sooner. If he still couldn't wait then it would have been much easier to make a deal so that prodigy skipped some of the nesecarry steps in becoming a lawyer instead of covering that he isn't one the rest of his life. Not mentioning the kind of buisness they are in, where finding dirt on each other is the norm.

Yes, sadly, whatever the culture, it appears universally true that females are unniversally belittled. The only harsher critic of a female is another female. I know I have two lovely daughters: 20 and 28 the are mixed race Anglo-Chinese. They're close but still apt to fight like cat and dog. Men (sometimes) fight dirty but women (you've got to love them, fight to win) aka Why is the arts film entertainment industry (wherever you live) such a cesspool?

I find it sad that many comments I read up here are leaning towards the negative spectrum.

Regardless, I have faith that she will pull through. At the very least, her acting is natural and not forced. I'm already counting my blessings that they didn't cast an actress with a cringeworthy acting (I will leave that for your imagination).

If it's about charisma, I believe that there's nobody who doesn't emote charisma next to Hyungsik. (I can say that because I've watched all his lovelines and he seriously is the king of chemistry!)

Wishing them the best as they continue to cast Jessica (my fav) and Louis. There is also another news before the end of 2017, but it was posted by DB, stating that Chae Jung Ahn is considering to play Donna. She fits the bill and I can't wait for her to confirm as well.

In that case Jun Ji Hyun, Kim Ji Won etc should be the most hated of all.

When your can't-act unnies take roles that they can't perform well even after 5+ years of acting, then before you make excuses for them please consider that the people being hurt by this aren't any male actors, it's other female actors who could have got that role.

I think Go Sung Hee is ok though. I don't hate her acting in WYWS, she did fine.

Nah but she did fine in my beautiful bride and spy. What other excuse other than hate? She is more reliable than Kim Ji Won too... Because Kim Ji Won is indeed has more limitation than Go Seung Hee, Her emoting anxiety, fear, is quite spot on fit with her body language. I'm not defending her based on misguide biased but based on what I saw.

I'm sorry, are you trying to say that Go Sung Hee is a better actress than, I repeat, Kim Ji Won? The same Kim Ji Won who was in Heirs, Horror Stories, Gap Dong, Fight My Way?

I really wonder what you saw because it doesn't seem to resemble what anyone else sees or even be based in reality. I don't know why so many fans of bad actresses do this, complain about how everyone who criticises them are "jealous haters" but then tear down other much better actresses to claim your fave is better. What's next, Suzy is more 'reliable' than KJW?

1

@teacakes, yess that Kim Ji Won who also star in descendant of the sun. She is pretty much limit. My opinion is not based on public opinion but based on my personal view watching them. Go Seung Hee might be lacking before My beautiful bride and spy, but both of that drama change my view on her. You can watching her with open mind without any corelation with their past project which they haven't improved

Go Sung-hee isn't among my favs and I won't also defend her acting in earlier days of her career, because she was really bland.. But she slowly improved during My Beautiful Bride, and I think her agency which also managed many great actors know how to find projects for her. Not only for character, but also find her dramas which she can act with many other great actors so that would be the opportunity for her to learn. She still has a lot to improve and not a lead material yet imo, I rather see someone like Lee Sun-bin or Kyung Su-jin in this role, if they are seeking for rising actresses.

More than the casts, I'm more worried about this remake. I hope it will be more like The Perfect Wife instead of Entourage or Criminal Minds.

He will definitely give his best shot not to give disappointment to those who are expecting so much. He may have gained popularity because of being paired to Park Bo Young, he also did his best to fulfill his role for the drama. Let's wait for the series to be aired and let's see if what will be the outcome. Our support for this will do.
