Drama viewership ratings for the week of Mar. 4-10, 2019

We have some new shows to add to the list, with more on the way, which means it’s almost time to say goodbye to those we’ve been following. The first to go was the popular sageuk The Crowned Clown, the finale garnering the show’s highest rating at 10.9 percent.

Interestingly enough, with The Crowned Clown gone, ratings for all its competitors went up. The Light in Your Eyes jumped to an impressive 8.4 percent, and even underdog Item jumped a little. Then on Wednesday, we had two premieres — Big Issue and Possessed — come in with average numbers, while ol’ Mr. Poong-sang remained on top.

Weekend hit My Only Ally will be ending next week after over 100 episodes, and tvN rom-com Romance is a Bonus Book will be ending after 16. The latter’s leading man Lee Jong-seok has already enlisted for his mandatory service but, luckily, finished this final project before leaving us. The drama’s been doing well all this time, so I’m rooting for its finale!

Glad that The Light in Your Eyes is doing well, it's starting to feel draggy though so I hope it picks up this week.

And oh boy, Spring Must Be Coming, the show is a little on the extreme side but it's fun and I'm surprisingly enjoying it >.<

I'm rather surprised at The Light In Your Eyes' ratings. I thought the show appeals only to older viewers. But it's also not exactly the type of weekend or typical makjang type of stuff that the more mature audience love.

I do read comments from viewers who want more romance between Hye Ja and Joon Ha and they are lamenting the lack of progress in this area.

I enjoy the parts with the brother (although realistically I get it's frustrating that he's not pulling his own weight while his family is in this sorta situation). I think the show is missing in that it shows deep reflections on issues but these issues get solved quickly as if it were no big deal. I like the show's slow feel to it!

I havent watched this week's episodes just coz they've been dragging. You'd think the pacing would be tighter with less episodes but nope, let's waste time and do nothing.

"waste time and do nothing..." kind of like what being older is really like. Or maybe what it's like to live your alternate life watching kdramas.

Not that part. I meant they could have explained things more. I don't mind slow but this one was just all over the place.

That's what I like about it, but then I like things that are different. The "all over the place" was in a good way, imo.

I think the drama is not following the usual formula. There's no heightening of crisis/conflict followed by a climax and resolution. Maybe the other issue is that most viewers are hoping that Hye Ja would go back to being a 25 year old and at this point, it doesn't look like it.

Oh it definitely is not following the standard formula. I watch it on viki and got annoyed with people wanting to turn her back and start the romance with NJH.

My problem with it is that it felt like it was going nowhere and it does not feel whole. The characters don't click and feel even more estranged as it goes on. Idk. Maybe it's just me.

I think I know what you meant by it's going nowhere. Like you said in the above comment, I don't mind slow but I'd like to see a better flow in the story telling. I can't really pin point what it is.

The part that irritates me is the comedy provided by Young Soo and the girlfriend. I have zero interest in their romance.

Yeah, admittedly I am a bit disappointed on the romance front, but over all I am enjoying this series and I can see why it appeals to the ajumma crowd.

I'm only continuing The Light in Your Eyes for Nam Joo-hyuk's excellent acting, but I agree that almost nothing significant has happened for some time now and I'm getting really impatient. The drama also ruins my mood just because it's so depressing. I always come out of an episode feeling distraught.

Feeling distraught? Try actually being in your 70s. It should be a message to the younger crowd but of course according to the above comments, the younger crowd won't get it.

I love it, I don't find it depressing at all. Its life as it is and being suddenly an 85 year old is as hard as the show shows. I don't care about any romance in it and i have no complains about it (maybe I should say I enjoyed how clever and good the director is in trying to avoid keeping his camera focused on NJH for long, he cries facing wall and so other scenes where we get random shots of some face parts! )

I also love it but I do find it depressing. But I feel like making it less depressing wouldn't be true to the story the show is trying to tell. I get that some people were expecting the whole thing to be more "kdrama" but thankfully the ratings are good so I feel like the writers are being rewarded for being different.

For most 70 year olds, indeed nothing significant happens in life. You don't want major events because it may mean something like a trip to the hospital. I was reading comments like it was boring watching the old Hye Ja go to the day care center and do the same things. It struck me that that's the fact. If you find life boring when you are young, imagine it worse when you are older.

I am glad that Haechi is picking up some of the Crowned Clown viewers. I am really enjoying the series and I am usually not a huge fan of intrigue politics. I will say that they made the one prince a little over the top bloodthirsty. It would have been nice if they had toned down that character a bit. Other than that, I have no complaints.

What's wrong Poong Sang this week's episode ratings getting higher no wonder I got my eyes bursting in tears watching them.
I had no expectation for Big Issue but still gonna watch it even its rating keeps going down, just in case lol.

Wow Bonus Book is past 6%! Good position going into finale week :)
I'm not a fan of the mystery writer Kang line but so far I like how poetically the show portrays so many of their scenes (like the one with Eun-Ho and Dan-Yi at the movie theatre). And because of this show, I definitely have much more appreciation for book publishers.

Do these ratings take into consideration Netflix as well for Bonus Book?

I am wondering too, even if it's only Netflix Korea! But I doubt it's counted.

Netflix never actually release their ratings to the public, as far as I was aware.. they do say they track viewings etc, but i've not come across them releasing actual results like normal ratings per se.
So I'd honestly be surprised if they did so :)

You are probably right. But it would be interesting since they air the episodes the same day as in Korea.

The only show they ever did that was called "You".

Yes, it happens only rarely and only when netflix has very good numbers to show (You, Birdbox etc)
