Am I really the first to comment on this week’s open thread! 🥳🥳🥳🥰. Hello everyone! I am looking for my next drama if anyone has recommendations. I don’t really want anything that’s still airing, the anticipation kills me. 🙂

What genre, kind of drama do you want to watch?

Dark/ thriller: Save me & Forest of secrets
Romance: Touch your heart just ended. It is pure fluff

Thanks for the recommendations! I am thinking a family drama like 5 children! Something a little longer that I can really enjoy for a while. I also really enjoyed let me introduce her too so something like a thriller would interest as well. I am also looking for some recommendations on Chinese costume dramas, I
watched princess agents and goodbye princess and really enjoyed them.

The only long family drama that I really liked is Ojakgyo Brothers

I haven’t watched any of the dramas you mentionned.

Cruel City & Two Weeks are other dark/ thriller dramas that I liked

@dramafan90 Lover of Dramas, what kind of shows do you like? I'm sure everyone Beanie here will be able to recommend you long, long lists of shows. But we could filter it a bit for you if we know what you definitely want to see or don't like to watch.

My kdrama faves off the top of my head: Healer, Signal, Life on Mars, Children of Nobody (Red Moon Blue Sun), Circle, Forest of Secrets (Stranger), Just Between Lovers (Rain or Shine), My Ahjusshi, Chicago Typewriter, Avengers Social Club ... there are lots more. :-)

Thanks for the recommendations! I was thinking a longer family or revenge drama would be nice to sink my teeth into. I was also looking for some Chinese costume drama recommendations? Like Goodbye princess or princess agents? I have been in a little slump lately with dramas and wanted some solid recommendations to get back in the zone. I never really finished goodbye princess cos it started to get really annoying 🤣🤣

I just binge watched the 46 eps C drama "All Is Well" in two weeks. It's an excellent family drama.

I'd dare say it's is No. 2 on my top C dramas list, just after Nirvana In Fire. It supersedes even The Story of Ming Lan which I raved about not long ago.

Did you watch 'All is Well' with subs? I'd like to try it.

0

@dramafan12 Youtube channel CN drama is uploading All Is Well with English sub (yay!). Three eps available so far.

3

@giegie thanks for the info. I'll bookmark that channel.

1

@giegie Good to hear that there's Eng subs, then more people can enjoy this drama.

@dramafan12 I didn't watch with subs. Dialogue in modern Chinese are much easier to understand. I need help when it comes to period dramas but Eng subs isn't a good solution because the translation is often off. However it still helps me to understand the general meaning.

2

Other than the weekenders, a relatively long "family" drama would be the Reply series. I specifically rec Reply 1988 if you haven't watched it yet, or Reply 1997. My favorite "revenge" drama is sageuk Six Flying Dragons, although only a part of that is really revenge. It's definitely a drama that you would have to "sink your teeth into". Enjoy!

Aah... if you're thinking of long Chinese dramas, then my fellow Beanies will be able to give you great recommendations.

As for family type shows... these would normally be 'soap operas' and like @sukstan says here, the Reply series. A show which has a family with a twist and some suspense is Suspicious Housekeeper. Hope this helps!

Hi Everyone! ..... I hope you are all doing well today.

I've been in bed for about 4 days because I've been super, super ill. It started with a swollen tonsil, which then turned into basic cold symptoms, which then escalated into a bunch of things going wrong ...... or at least I felt that way! I tried to stay hydrated as much as I could but I was super nauseous and I couldn't even keep water down for about two days. It was awful and freaky!! I want to say I'm getting better but I'm still coughing up a storm and nothing is working to calm it down. I've tried honey, ginger, lemon, teas, gargles, coconut oil and nothing! I've burst capillaries under my eyes and throat from the severity and intensity of the coughing. I absolutely have no idea what happened or where I picked up such an aggressive bug from, but it's been an absolute terrible experience.

In between rounds of sleep, I've been trying to keep up with the drama-watching. I may be ill, but I'm a dedicated Beanie!

My Fellow Citizens - This looks like it has the right amount of silly and fun. ..... It's interesting, I've never really warmed up to actress Kim Min-jung until she did Mr. Sunshine, but I look forward to watching her being hilarious in this.

The Fiery Priest - Through my illness-induced haze, all I remember is our hot-tempered priest looking incredibly good in black attire. ...... Maybe that's not a bad thing to remember! Heh!

Doctor Prisoner - I think I could watch Namgoong Min and Kim Byung-chul go head-to-head everyday. Seriously.

Confession - This is just so good. So many questions ..... about everybody! Who knew what when, and who's covering what? ....... Kudos to the actor playing Jong-gu. You certainly don't want to cross paths with a guy like the one he's portraying.

The Banker - So I went into the first episode with the best of intentions and fully convinced that I would like it. But things didn't work out and I'm actually a little surprised about that. It's unfortunate really.

That's all for now. Everyone take care and, have a great Friday and stay healthy!

Hey @korfan! I sorry to hear you've been ill and suffering so much with the coughing! I hate that! I've just recovered from the flu myself. I sort of felt the throat going sore and immediately self-medicated for nose and throat. When it still got worse (but more slowly than if I hadn't made efforts to sleep more, drink more water and take the meds), then only I checked with the doc if I needed anti-biotics. Fortunately I didn't, and I've been slowly improving with the odd coughing fit and nasal nastiness.

I hope you can rest well despite the cough and be up and about next week.

Talk about Beanie dedication! That's an impressive list for one so ill. I'm still sticking to just Confession and loving it like crazy, and at the most I may catch the odd Drama Special or an Agatha Christie for a quickie without the weekly commitment.

Continue to take care of yourself now, and I hope to hear that you're all better next week! Also, I'll see you on the Confession thread!! :-D

I was contemplating the drama but the synopsis didn't strike me as anything particularly interesting.

@outofthisworld Give it a try and see what you think! The synopsis didn't include (if I recall correctly) any detail that particularly stood out. But the details to this story are interesting and the acting is fantastic.

3

@korfan Thanks. I'll start this then.

2

@outofthisworld Great if you start this show. The subs come out later than for other kdramas, but it's worth the wait. I may end up watching the show once raw and then subbed.

I'm hoping that at the end of the twists and investigations and court cases, there will be healing and lots of bonding. ;-D

2

there a re a number of interesting series aside from Confession. Do check out the revenge series Kill it with Ki Yong and Nana and the Namgoong Kim starer Doctor Prisoner; the romcoms I Hate YOu Juliet with Lee Hong Ki and one with a police thingy touch, He's Psychometric with Park Jin Young of GOT7.

Crossing over to Thai series, there's the Hua Jai Sila remake.

0

@korfan You mean you've been trying to get well from such a bad illness without any medical help?!!! I'm finding nowadays that if I don't act fast to stop the illness from escalating, I take far too long to recover and get relapses easily.

I do try to avoid antibiotics so that I can build up better resistance, but when I have to, I take them and finish the course. It's been harder as I get older, to recover well fast, and regain strength without some help. :-(

@koalacruz
Thanks for the recommendations. I do usually watch something like 3-6 shows concurrently, however in this period of time, I've decided to be picky because I have less time for 'leisure'.

So far I'm glad I started Confession which has an interesting narrative, several mysteries to unravel (and have fun speculating about) and protagonists who are coming together nicely and whom are easy to root for.

I am thinking of starting one more show but maybe in the weekend. :-)

@Lemongrass Oh yes, I have propolis. I have the throat spray and the capsules. Sprayed my throat once a day for a few days, and it may have reduced the inflammation and got the soreness going faster.

Maybe that and fast action to reduce the inflammation has reduced the coughing which used to be prolonged.

Poor korfan, sorry to hear you've been sick. Hopefully you will bounce back over the weekend and put this illness behind you! The only K-drama I'm watching that you are also watching is Doctor Prisoner which I'm really enjoying. Did you see Prison Playbook? I thought it was very well done, one of my 2018 favorites. I'm swamped with work this weekend not to mention getting my taxes done tomorrow (bleh) and the recent K-news corruption in the entertainment world is disheartening to say the least. I think I'll stroll the aisles of our local nursery and make plans for a few pretty flowers, a few veggies, and herbs for late spring planting. Feel better soon!

Hi Everyone and Happy OT!
Thanks for starting OT early this week @mary!

Those of you who read my post some weeks ago may recall that I mentioned I had to change my car. I used to drive a stick shift, fully manual car for years and years. But now I finally got my new car and it's automatic :-D And (*don't laugh*), I had to practise and practise driving in it for the last 1.5 days!!! I mean I took the trouble to go out in it to see if I could negotiate the lack of clutch pedal, the lack of the need to go to neutral gear (do we ever go to neutral?) and since the new car has lower 'horsepower', I tried out climbing up the steep-ish slope of my office carpark late in the evening when it's less busy.

I also tried out the Econ button, the lower 'S' and 'L' gears and worked on remembering which lever was for what since my old car had things the other way around!!! I'm glad to say I only hit the wipers by mistake once (instead of the turning indicator). All in, I'm glad to say I made it out and back without incident and the car was smooth and fine.

Once I get past the stress of figuring out if I'm driving it correctly while not meeting any other traffic physically, I should be able to enjoy the drive. I'm even going to try out cruise control on Sunday, when we hope to find a longish stretch of road that is clear of most traffic ... those who've been here know that this is not an easy feat!

So I'm having fun reading car manuals and watching videos in how to drive an auto car. How's your week been? :-D

"when we hope to find a longish stretch of road that is clear of most traffic"

Let me know if you can find one!

I am amazed at your dedication. I've learnt this about myself after five decades - I fail at reading manuals. I am just ADHD when it comes to manual, I flip a couple of pages if I do at all. Then I get impatient, throw it aside and tackle whatever machine it is. Luckily my husband and now my sons love reading manuals.

About manual cars, I kinda miss the clutch and gear shift stuff. Nostalgia? I have never owned one, the only manual car I've drove was my driving instructor's car more than 25 years ago. One of the most dreaded part of the test was clutch control on a slope. Okay, maybe it's second to parallel parking. I am still sticking to manual parallel parking even though my car has a parallel park assist feature. I remember it was scary giving control over to the car during my test drive. I guess old habits die hard. One day, we don't even need to touch the steering wheel.

Required fields are marked *

LOL @outofthisworld I don't actually read the manual from cover to cover. I choose the parts I want to know about and read the relevant pages. However, it's not entirely boring either Heheheh!

Checking up Youtube for advice is also very helpful.

As for the longish stretch of road, we're planning to try on a Sunday afternoon, on the PIE heading towards NTU. Should be a good chance for the cruise control. I think most of the expressways towards town on a Sunday should be relatively clear *fingers crossed*

You are still much better than me. I only check the manual if I run into a problem and the one who read it isn't around :P

Another road you can try is the West Coast viaduct from Pasir Panjang towards CBD. It's always relatively empty and more so on Sunday since there's less heavy vehicles.

First drama I am watching with Lee Seo Jin. He has thick hair and dimples, just like Shah Rukh Khan, and whom my mother loves. lol. So every one is happy. Hi all:

Am recovering from an icky fluy cold kinda thing. Ugh. Do not get it. Anyways, with the help of homeopathy and some phytoncides done by forest walking (thank you kdrama for enlightening me) I will be better in a week or so, hopefully.

Dramas:

I picked up a Star on the Road needs to pick up. Now it's turned into just another drama about an actor and a clingy newbie girlfriend who wants him. Ah well. I watched the last episode without subs so many there is something i am missing that will infuse hope into me.

My Fellow Citizens -- This is a surprise. So much fun. I always liked Siwan but never really loved him. But his acting has really grown.

Dr Prisoner -- oh my! Point, counterpoint. Strategy, counter-strategy. Machinations, counter-machinations. And i am so here for it although sometimes i think, "Good grief! This is so over-the-top." NamGoong Min does a good job of making me hate the villainous warden. Villainous warden is just walking the edge of caricature but succeeding as well. And why is rich imprisoned chaebol looking like they're gonna redeem him?

Confession-- I LOVE LOVE LOVE this drama. My drama crack. Yunho is sooo good. And so hot.

The Psychometric Guy -- I didn't give this drama much hope. I figured it'd be a kid show. Then it seemed to be meh. But after the sixth episode, i am liking it a lot. Am getting "Missing" vibes so i hope doensang can save hyung from going full on evil. Hey, just because you're alecythimic (?) doesn't mean you're bound for psychopathdom, does it?

Kill it: Well, let's just say that this drama has yet to show its uniqueness. A drama doesn't have to be unique. It can merely be good or even competent. This drama is both, but i watch it without any great love for it. With NamGoong Min being all passionate, and Yunho being all subdued melancholic indifferent to everything in life except dad, and that psychometric bros being all broey-, it's hard to work up my passion for this. Still watching tho. So there's that.

The Banker: I'm watching. It's good but i have no passion for it. I loved the Japanese version. I think fleshing out the plot diluted the passionate love for numbers and rules that the jdrama had. Plus the jdrama had Masato Sakai. So there's that. I guess the writer had to make it connect to korean banking laws so i understand, i think..but still.

Chinese dramas:

Golden Eye: Oh my lord! Never have i hated and been so addicted to a show. The easy plotting, the late (tragic) backstory that was supposed to make us love the tough-feral female cop and the murderous villainess, the mistaken belief on the part of the writer that we loved her characters, the hokey 70's cop show/moody flute music vibes. I hated watching every minute of it, and yet i could not turn away. I was that addicted. May i never get caught up in a children's show kind of adventure drama ever again! The only way one can enjoy this is to check one's head at the door...

Destiny's Love: i am really loving this. Avenue X is a channel on youtube that discusses Chinese culture and drama and the host is sooo good. She recommended it. It's a bit of a cross between Goblin, Mama Fairy, and My Love From the Stars. It's silly and likable and just plain fun. I find myself laughing through all the episodes.

Have a great weekend, all.

Avenue X is essential viewing for C-drama fans. I love her critical analysis and commentaries on behind-the-scenes production issues. One of my favorite videos was her explainer on how most productions do not show the qin being played properly. I can't find the original video but she did this second version a couple months ago.

Now I'm always on the look out for bad fake playing!

It is, isn't it? It's all about gamesmanship so it's fun to watch. I did find myself, in a moment of clarity, saying, "So you really want this psychopath to go free so our damaged hero can avenge himself against folks who didn't allow him to go to his mother's funeral? And heck, we saw more about the pregnant woman than we did about his mom?" Yep, i had to let that sink in. And now that it's sunk in that i will let anyone die and any bad guy go free because of dead grandma...i'm cool with it.

Get well! This cold is a doozy. Ear/nose/mouth scratching.

Just read on allkpop that Seungri is most likely to receive only 2 to 3 years' of imprisonment and maybe he can even get away with a probation! I don't know about the law and punishment but this seems like a slap on the wrist for the crimes he has been accused of.

I'm also surprised that no bigger names have been revealed because I am sure there is a few businessmen, politicians and the rich and wealthy connected to this. If the system remains corrupt or invincible, how can real change be brought about?

1

@growingbeautifully and @scifiwritir

I was and still am a very cynical drama watcher. I thought those stories of corrupted politicians, prosecutors and how the rich get away with murder were highly dramatized. Who knew reality isn't that far off? *shudders*

3

In a lot of dramas it seems the rush the prosecution of criminals before all the evidence is found. Sometimes, it's more about putting blame on someone and closing the books than finding the real justice. Of course, that's TV ... so it's probably an exaggeration OR it's the medium criticizing what they see actually happening.

But definitely, this is an investigation that should be done methodically.

This is my very first post ; reason is Jo Jin Mo
What a revelation
Netflix has brought empress Ki and loved him as Wang yu but the currently airing drama Big Issue is phenomenal: really gripping story line; loving the ruthlessness of his boss and mellowing at last , the poignancy of looking at his child through the telescope and the mad train sequence
Absolutely highly recommended
Am rewatching woman with a suitcase and the dialogues between him and Choi Ji won are so witty with superb comebacks and smart ass ness all around ,,
Then caught up on an old drama of his called punch
And am currently watching is queen of the game from a long time ago
This man is emotes such rawness and feeling that he is every character he plays ... seems highly underrated

Good morning fellow Beanies! Hope everyone has had a lovely week and will have a even more lovely weekend :3

Crowned Clown 9.5/10 This drama is phenomenal. Best drama I've seen in a long time. But I am having a hard time finishing this. Because it's so good the drama agitates and worries and stresses me out about where things will go so I only watch like 30 min. at a time before I need a break. I only have a couple episodes left which means more agitation as things are really heating up. I really pray everything turns out as I like these characters too much for anything different.

I Picked Up a Celebrity On The Street 7.5/10 This one is cute but you really need a huge helping of suspension of belief. I wasn't really caring for the first about 5 episodes and I just couldn't get behind the romance since it wouldn't have been a very true romance (he was her victim and it would have felt like Stolkholms). I also got annoyed with how selfish she was and how much she lied. At one point blaming him for her kidnapping him. But once he managed to escape it got much better. I just wish that happened sooner then half way through the series. But now that he isn't actually kidnapped anymore the series has started turning much cuter. All the actors are doing a really good job.

I Will Never Let You Go 7/10 This drama had one of the stupidest endings ever. It's like the drama ran out of time and the writers just gave up on the last episode (thus the lower score). Overall the drama was entertaining but nothing really memorable or special. Acting was good and the main couple were cute and had good chemistry when they managed to actually be together, but the plot wasn't anything to write home about.

Ashes of Love 9.5/10 Finished this for the 2nd time but watched it with my little brother and mom this time. I love this drama and thankfully my brother and mom also loved it. I love the characters and how they grow in the drama. I especially love how Yun Ru was written. His descent into darkness makes complete sense why he goes there and even until nearly the end I felt pity for him. And the other characters growth was well written. Great romance, characters, and plot. Love Love Love.

Happy Friday, Beanies! I mentioned my strange interview experience in last week's OT. I hereby present another unpleasant tale of a post-interview experience. I'm sharing this partly because of the strangeness, but also because some of you may benefit from knowing odd things that pop up in a job search.

2 weeks back, I interviewed somewhere (not the same place as last week's story). The hiring manager was friendly, and shared plenty about the company's outlook and the role. I received a verbal offer, but I was hesitant. The company didn't appear to have a long-term plan to adapt to changes in the industry, and my role would involve a stop-gap measure.

So after thinking it over for a few days, I declined the offer, explaining briefly that the work scope didn't fit my career goals. (It was terrifying, by the way—I didn't have, and still don't have, another offer. But I knew I would be miserable there.) I didn't hear from them for a couple of days, but one evening, I find two missed calls from them. The HR manager wants more details on why I rejected, which I supply.

A week passes with no reply, and suddenly I get an email from the HR manager saying she showed my resume to the chairman, and he wants to invite me in for a chat the very next day (in less than 24h). Now, I know that some companies are open to discussing alternative, more suitable opportunities. But I don't recall this being a non-mutual decision. There was no indication prior to this email that they wished to negotiate. I felt uncomfortable that things proceeded this way without clear communication or consent, so I wiggled my way out of it.

Turns out I dodged a bullet, because later I check Glass Door and several reviews indicated the chairman was often distracted during their interviews, taking calls or giving orders to his subordinates. Yikes. This job search may be drawn-out, but I'm getting really savvy at spotting these red flags.

Suddenly I feel less (or more?) guilty about my unemployment nagging. I am relieved that you dodged another bullet, and yes, having no other options left all of a sudden is scary. Try to keep in mind that you started looking with zero options and worked your way up to two (bad ones, but still). You can do this again! Feel free to rant to me anytime!

Thank you, that really is an encouraging way to look at my situation!

When I look back at the past month compared to previous ones, it does seem that I'm gaining ground on my job search. I consulted my career advisor, incorporated his suggestions, and compared to 1 interview out of 10 apps from Dec-Jan, I scored 4 interviews and 1 job offer (albeit an unsuitable one) out of 9 apps in March alone.

"Feel free to rant to me anytime" > Same to you! Talk more in my reply to your comment below!

@purpleteapot That is strange! If someone has declined the job, it's not quite the thing to expect them to come for another meeting, rather than at least give them a choice. Thank you! I didn't mind giving more details--I thought maybe HR wanted to find out how to make their offer more appealing to future candidates, and it's not like I'm sacrificing much by providing that info. But if they were entering negotiation mode, they could've at least let me know. They may be operating under dated HR practices, in which they don't see such things as a two-way street.

I'm not watching anything right now. I'm re-watching Pretty Noona That Buys Me Food on Netflix when I get bored. I just don't see anything running right now that I'm interested in watching. I am watching the unfolding molka scandal with Seungri and Jung Joon young. Appears there are probably going to be some actors caught up in this video porn sharing thing too. I've always thought the idol system was pretty much designed to torture children and the South Korean government allows them to get away with it. Removing kids from their homes at a young age, starving them, overworking them, denying them a formal education or any meaningful contact with their families sometimes for years. Always a recipe for creating damaged human beings.

Still South Korea has always been horrible on women's rights. Many dramas are so misogynist that I can't even watch them. Even most of the dramas that portray women as strong and independent end up having them relent and give in to the "protection" of their main man. I know it doesn't matter what country where you live women's rights are always in struggle. I just don't know if my patronage of their entertainment is helping Korean women or just another obstacle to their growth.

The Burning Sun scandal continues to slow engulf more celebrities, police officials and the wealthy class. More than 100 new illicit videos were turned over to police. But the story has a new, cringe worthy twist. Investigators have allegedly began tracking some of the charges to two mysterious women.

According to a Taiwanese media outlet, Madam Lin, who used to run a restaurant, opened a casino with retired police officers of Taichung in 1993 and began a gambling business. At the time, she aired live broadcasts of casinos in Las Vegas or the Philippines and created a system that allows gamblers to make bets online.
Since then, Madam Lin made a fortune off of Chinese gamblers by systematically running an ILLEGAL sports gambling website based in the Philippines. She is said to have earned up to $13M USDa day and an accumulated $12.3B USD in 5 years.
According to the Taiwanese press, Madam Lin is also a legendary figure among the social circles of Taiwan. She is said to be obsessed with anything that is labeled “limited edition” and is a VVVIP of luxury brands. She is a big fan of celebrities and likes to mingle with them, including Seungri.
Meanwhile, Madam Lin was recently accused of being an owner in Burning Sun and she used the club for money laundering. Korean police have asked Chinese and Taiwan authorities for help in investigating her.

A second mysterious woman has been identified as one who is known for controlling the media, politicians, and officials in Korea. She goes by the name of Madame Shim, and she is considered one of the most powerful women in all of Korea, due to her connections with politicians, celebrities, news outlets, and CEO’s. She uses her wide range of connections to protect who she needs to, most recently an unconfirmed report linked here with the Burning Sun, Seungri and Jang Ja Yeon‘s cases. Madame Shim has a criminal record but got a light sentence in 2008 for ILLEGAL gambling. Her business model was simple: she supplied gambling to police officers (for protection); drugs to celebrities ($), and prostitutes to CEOs and others ($ and connections). Protection, money and connections equals power.
It was also alleged that Madam Shim was known to be a broker for prostituting rookie and aspiring actresses to wealthy VIP’s, as well as facilitating a gambling ring for these VIPs, who are trying to avoid getting caught by authorities.

This could explain why so many young celebrities have been caught up in this scandal because this culture and illicit business has been going on for a very long time. The tracing of the horrible crimes against women to two powerful women is a twist I was not expecting to happen.

Happy weekend Beanies!
What a week! I got invited for a permanent job contract offer yesterday, but in the end they changed their mind to a temp position for a year. I have one week to consider, and everyone urges me to sign, but I cannot help but be disappointed that it is not a permanent position.

A permanent position offers stability and the luxury to start thinking about future plans, which I now have to postpone again. In the past I used to be overjoyed to be simply working for a short while, to escape the unemployment for a bit, but now I am already dreading the unemployment that is bound to follow after my contract ends next year, and I have not even signed it yet.

I am trying my luck in some other recruitment pools as well, so that I have some a back-up as soon as my contract ends next year, but a lot can change in a year.

I want to get rid of this disappointment feeling by next week, so that I can channel my own Kang Dan-I ;) Which reminds me, I really should continue watching RIABB, before my contract and all the good spring dramas start :p

Have you decided on whether to take up the offer? Did they mention why it became a temp rather than a permanent position? If the issue is financial, maybe you can ask them whether there's a possibility of converting to full time after that one year is up, if the company's situation permits it. It'll save you the pain of searching for another job next year.

If the chance of converting to a permanent hire is slim, and you're still torn on the decision, maybe you can list out all of the pros and cons. A con would be the impermanence, but if pros include the work culture being a good fit, and the role builds skills that you can then sell in your next job search, then it may be worth taking on!

Required fields are marked *

I think I am taking up the offer. They felt that I was not experienced enough to take on the permanent job I applied for, and they were justified in their explanation. They had every right to end it right there, but it looks like they saw potential, because they offered me a similar temp job contract for a year with a good salary and benefits. I received everything on paper to consider and let others look at it, and they also were positive about the offer. The employer also said it might become a permanent job afterwards, but that is not guaranteed.

I also am free every Friday afternoon (Open Thread, Hurray!), so I can schedule errands, appointments and job interviews then. I also submitted a couple applications for recruitment pools. Everyone who passes all rounds is inside that recruitment pool for 2 years, but only the best candidate gets the actual job offer. If those companies have more jobs to offer in this two year period, the other candidates in the pool get their turn. So I might still get inside one or more pools, or even a (permanent) job offer later on.

Does not seem so bad when you read it like this huh? ;) I am fully aware, but when I walked into that office, feeling so sure about the end of my job instability and the start of a permanent job….The words temp job were quite a punch to the gut at that moment, and it hurts more than it should. I guess I am disappointed at that small (?) drawback and disappointed in myself for not being able to move past it. Cynism has become quite the old friend, you see. So as long as I have no proof that a permanent job offer will come eventually, I am doomed to fear for my job stability until that time finally arrives.

Sounds like a good plan. And if you do go ahead and accept the temporary position, also start taking a class on building of a skill that would be beneficial in the company. Such as becoming very skilled at building databases or more complicated spreadsheets or perhaps building skills in graphic design (or whatever the company might need). Then, not only are you proving yourself through your temporary work, but you are making yourself even more valuable to your current company or to another company should next year just offer another temporary position. :-)

2

Required fields are marked *

Having been through the tortures of a job search twice, I think I can imagine how you're feeling. But if the company's concern is your experience, yet they still gave you an offer, then there's hope yet!

A year isn't very long, but it's not too short to try and bridge that gap between where you are and where the company hopes you will be. I think you can let yourself worry a little about not being offered a permanent position, but also put in more energy to work out how to lessen chances of that happening.

zzthorn's suggestion is great, and I'd add that you should consult the hiring manager on what you can do to bridge that gap. Chances are they'll be more than happy to share. Most companies would rather a current staff that they've already trained/ trust move up a level, than have to restart the hiring process all over again.

That’s... not a quick question. There are lots! Some of them are direct character crossovers, some are just cheeky jokes.

The earliest I can remember is Chun-hyang and Mong-ryong at the end of My Girl. Hong Sisters do it a lot. Park Shin-hye from You’re Beautiful to My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Lee Seung-gi in Best Love, Jang Geun-seok in Hwayugi. They did tons more.

For non-HongSis, there’s Lee Jong-seok’s cameo in Weightlifting Fairy referencing his role in W. A lot of characters also crossover in the Reply Series. There’s Min Joon-gook crossover from I Hear Your Voice to Pinnochio. There’s Descendants of the Sun’s secondary couple’s storyline in Mr. Sunshine.

So US Netflix picked up POSSESSED and wow the show is quite different. On one hand it's a thriller with a supernatural twist but there's also comedy elements as a cop who consults with a woman with shaman abilities starts seeing ghosts himself. Tonally ... it's a huge mismatch but the actors are doing great. It's a lot to take in though.

TGIF! Hope everyone had a good week. A few more new shows to add in ever-growing watch list (and a few more to move to "done" list- btw WTH with Item's finale?). Continuing from last week, I checked the interview of Jeon Hye-bin (36) who played Jung-sang, Poong-sang's younger sister in What's wrong Mr.Poong-sang/Liver or Die. I think she is more familiar as "Pretty" Oh Hae-young in Oh Hae-young Again to us. Per wiki(and namuwiki) Jeon made her entertainment debut in 2002 with kpop group LUV, alongside Jo Eun-byul and Oh Yeon-seo(Hwayoogi). However the group was disbanded after 6 months due to low popularity. In 2003, Jeon debuted in MBC's sitcom Nonstop3, and continued doing dramas like Sang Doo! Let's Go to School(2007), The King and I(2007), He Who Can't Marry(2009), Queen Insu(2012), Queen of the Office (2013), Joseon Gunman(2014), Healer(2015), Oh Hae-young again(2015) and The Beauty Inside(2018). She also did an horror film Dead Friend(2004).

Jeon revealed how she stepped into the industry in the variety Gang Ho-dong's Strong heart. She said she wanted to be an actress and got scammed and used when someone close to her made her sing and dance in drinking occasions for people higher-up. She developed severe depression but eventually got over with help from people around her. Jeon seemed to gain extra ordinary mental strength from this experience which showed in variety. In "Law of the Jungle" (for which she received Best Entertainer award in 2012), Jeon received good response by showing excellent survival skills and later worked as female fighter assisting the main in the show.

It has been 17 years since she started acting when she had an interview after Mr.Poong-sang ended.[OSEN, Starnews, newsis, 2019.03.22-23] In the show, Jeon played Jung-sang who was calm in any situation and Poong-sang oppa's only pride. She was the most normal person among all siblings. Here is Q&A session.
Q: The show ended receiving viewers' immense interests and love. How do you feel?
Jeon: I am so thankful and glad we received lots of interests and love. It is not easy to meet a good project and a project receiving much appreciation. We didn't want to part even after the reward trip, and I felt like drama didn't end yet. We became almost like a family. It is amazing many people spent time together like family, and I think that is the power of this drama. I felt I was loved. Since I experienced happiness when people greeted me saying "Oh, Jung-sang came?" I felt like I wanted to play only nice roles who were loved.

Q: Didn't you feel burdened starring in the drama of writer Moon Young-nam who is called "Great mother of makjang"? There was also time makjang was mentioned due to extreme characters. What did actors think?
Jeon: I think she is a writer who really understands human. I think every family has certain pain. One time we went to ER to shoot. We went to the waiting room and some patients' families noticed us. A person...

...said "My husband is just like Poong-sang ssi. So I can't watch the show because I can't help but crying. Please make Poong-sang ssi recover and let us have hopes too." I was a doctor in the show as you know. Wherever I went to hospital to film, grandmothers greeted me saying the doctor came. We talked with patients' families a lot and heard patients watched the show invested. It was all their own story. They held my hands and said with tears, "Please have happy ending for Poong-sang ssi." As I heard many real stories like that, I can't use the word makjang to this drama. I think writer Moon's work can comfort the people. It was the moment I felt her work's greatness.

One reason that this project received much love was because it was "Just like me". There were lots of such feedback. Actors acted passionately with sincere heart and the viewers watched the show like their own family story. It was such honor to be able to do the project as an actress. In school you have to do "standard rule of Math", and writer Moon's project is like that to actors. The strength of writer Moon is that she makes a project touching your mind. If you check her previous projects, the reason they received much love was because there was a character like us. I think she tries to write a project drawing out the pain only you know and giving comforts.

The drama threw the question "Is family burden or strength?" Eventually it gave message even the family you thought as burden, could be strength. Mr.Poong-sang is our parents' generation story. Poong-sang oppa took care of younger siblings living hard life and sacrificed himself for his family -that was family man in our parents' generation. I felt proud reading the response like "My mom is like No Yang-sim(mother in the show), but I decided to forgive her.", "My dad is similar to Poong-sang oppa so I was frustrated, but the show gave me opportunity to understand him." And my dad said he watched crying and sent me a long text "My daughter, I am grateful and love you.". Thanks to this drama I am having good time with my family too. To someone many projects could be just pastime, but I think this project will take large part in my life. And I expect there might be scenes to remain in someone's memory for a long time. I think it was project people watched crying, being upset, really carrying emotions along with the people in the show. I learned a lot and grew as actress with this project.

Q: You played a character loved by the public. It might have influence deciding next projects?
Jeon: Even though I will love whatever character I play, I became to think that I really want to play a character who can be firmly on someone's side. I want to play a character who is loved, a character who can be a spokesperson for someone. Since I was the only assured reinforcement to Poong-sang oppa, many people liked me. As people holding my hands pleading "Doctor, please save Poong-sang." I really...

...loved the feeling of being adored by public. That is lacking if you play villain roles. I used to be cursed a lot. Especially when I did "Oh Hae-young Again", I was hurt because of malicious comments even though I was a nice character.

Q: You received much love from the writer Moon Young-nam(59).
Jeon: Writer Moon said "When Jung-sang appears, I feel assured." Sunsaeng-nim acts well too. Not just making comments, she actually demonstrated saying "Do like this.". She felt like an artist. She also kept saying she wanted me as her daughter-in-law. She said jokingly, "I have lots of money. If you married into my family, all my money will be yours." I am so thankful she liked me.
I thought a lot how I had to interpret my character at first, but you can't worry deeply for writer-nim's project. The biggest task was how to act the character honestly as written in the script. It was difficult because I didn't do that kind of acting.

Q: There were many characters in the show. Who Jeon Hye-bin resembles the most?
Jeon: I am like Jung-sang. I am the eldest in my family. Since it is private matter I can say everything, but I am one of people who live with heavy burden on my shoulder. I have big responsibility for my family. As I did this project, I became to understand my family members like Jung-sang. I received much consolation.

Q: Poong-sang(played by Yoo Joon-sang) was oppa like parents for his siblings.
Jeon: Yoo Jun-sang was like real brother. You might know already but he is really nice person. I have no doubt he will become an actor who will gain respect like Lee Soon-jae sunsaeng-nim. Not only me he took care of crews, production team, and many people. He talked with actors a lot and treated us with something delicious. He is oppa who tries to share if there is something good. His wife is also a perfect actress, and they have two very good looking sons. They are smart and even nice too. I think they are family who has nothing to envy. Jun-sang oppa worries about me too. He said "You have to meet a nice person and marry." He said if I have a man to marry, bring him to him first. He also gave advices like "You have to meet such person", "You have to check this when you meet a man." and conclusion was to meet a person like him -A person who is responsible, nice and not selfish, and not impatient.

I worked with him in the same company for 9 years and we appeared in previous drama Falsify(2017) together so we were close. When filming Mr. Poong-sang, we couldn't stop crying especially in my wedding scene. As soon as he saw me in the wedding dress, oppa avoided my gaze. I held up tearing until shooting started, but my throat got choked up and I couldn't say my lines. Also in the show when I got caught having affair, I got hit hard on the head by oppa. He hit me so hard that it went out of camera angle, and we had NG. Staffs asked if I was ok, and I told them "Have an ambulance ready." My head was so...

...aching that I couldn't sleep on the pillow for two days. Jun-sang oppa called me to say sorry continuously.

Q: You fought with your twin Lee Si-young/Hwa-sang whenever you two met in the show. Sometimes it got messy and physical.
Jeon: Hwa-sang was compared to Jung-sang ever since she was young, and she was full of inferiority complex with "I grew up without being loved." "Our family compared us all the time." I think there might be people who felt relatable thinking "I was The Ugly Duckling too." Si-young unni has female fighter image. Because she was boxer, when filming a fighting scene there was mood expecting our big match on the set. There was no mercy between us. First the scene we pulled our hairs finished quickly. When there was a scene we slapped each other later, we said we would do like real because we felt lacking in hair pulling scene. So we slapped each other hard, and it was full swing. When she slapped my face three times I teared up. I hit her hard back and said "We are equal". Unni shed tears after got slapped. We fought like real sisters and when we finished we laughed. We hugged each other and comforted, feeling sorry for each other. We filmed having fun to the end.

I was offered for Jung-sang role from the start. Hwa-sang couldn't be played by anyone but Lee Si-young. Si-young unni was perfect fit for Hwa-sang. At ordinary times, she lived like Hwa-sang. Both swear words or complements. We five siblings had a chat room, and Si-young unni really talked like Hwa-sang. There was even time Wae-sang cried because she teased too much. There was unique spunkiness with her.

Q: How was playing a doctor role?
Jeon: I played a lawyer("byunhoSa") in "Woman with a suitcase". Since then I said I wouldn't do any role with the letter "Sa" in it. It is hard to memorize the lines because professional jargon are too difficult. Still I played doctor ("UiSa") this time. Fortunately, there weren't many professional terms, so I was able to pass without having problem. But writer Moon writes in a way that I had to speak the dialog exactly as it was written because all had meaning. It was hard to memorize long dialogs. Lee Si-young unni was really good at memorizing. She seemed being born with it. Jun-sang oppa, Sin Dong-mi unni and I couldn't memorize lines like her so we had hard time.

Q: Viewers were curious as to who would give Poong-sang a liver. In the end the twin sisters did.
Jeon: I didn't know either until I received the scripts. Even director-nim did not know. We received the scripts of finale eps. on the day we carried out ratings promise, and we all were stunned. There were many people who asked, and it was really difficult holding up.
Q: During the liver transplant plot all siblings opened up about their thoughts on past incidents. There were stories even Poong-sang had no idea. Until then they were just back-breakers. When it was revealed why siblings turned out that way their...

...pathetic characters gained some sympathy.
Jeon: While filming the drama I lived like real siblings with them. At first I thought "That Jin-sang, Hwa-sang" Because characters were so strong I thought it would be headache to have such family members. But I think the correct answer is to embrace them because they are family. I think family is only ones who can heal the pain caused by each other.
Actually Lee Bo-hee sunsaeng-nim who played No Yang-shim is lovable. It is not easy to endure hates from public, but she did that well. Mothers in her generation had difficulty making a living unlike these days. Because many people married in young age and didn't know much, sometimes they caused grief to their children.

Q: You mean you can forgive mother like No Yang-shim?
Jeon: Pung-sang oppa forgave her but didn't accept her. I don't think she knew what she did wrong. Like in my line "Do you know what your problem is? You don't know you did wrong when you did wrong." I think I can forgive her, but I don't think I can accept her as family.
Q: Among 5 siblings, you volunteered first to give a liver to Poong-sang. If it is in real life, what would Jeon Hye-bin do?
Jeon: Of course I will do. I heard even if you give liver, you can recover in 3 years. If only there is not much difficulty to work as actress, I will give liver, kidney, any organ transplant possible.

Q: Surpassing 20% ratings- did you expect such outcome?
Jeon: We didn't have good situation when broadcast began. Even with that, I said we would do 1st place. I said it would pass 15% at first, and after 15%, I ran around saying it would reach 20%. So everyone called me Binstradamus (Jeon Hye-bin+Nostradamus). Even director-nim asked "What ratings you think we will have?" Most of my projects I've worked made the top spot on same time slot, but this was first time having over 20%, I think. I expected this would be a big hit from the start. When writing, directing, and acting were in complete harmony I felt "perfect". If it was weekend drama, it would've be over 50%.
Q: It is still early, but you feel you will get an award in KBS award ceremony this year?
Jeon: I have no idea, but I have high expectation for Yoo Jun-sang oppa. And I also have expectation for Sin Dong-mi unni who played his wife. Both of them played really big role. I feel both of them will get it. I will be thankful if they give me one too.

Q: You passed your mid 30's. Do you have a plan for marriage?
Jeon: I was extremely busy until recently. I want to marry but it is not easy. I am going to try, but I also have plan to live alone. I am going to do my best until I become 40. If it doesn't work out, I will take it as heaven's will. After I filmed this family drama, I felt the importance of family a lot and wanted to marry. Sometimes when I have time, I want to meet friends and chat, but it is hard to meet someone because there are things on the internet you don't even want to know...

...about some celebrity.

Q: What plan Jeon Hye-bin in this age has?
Jeon: What I want as I age is to become an diversified actress. I watched "Towel of Babel" where Kim Hye-sook sunsaeng-nim appears, and she had such charisma. When she was in "My most beautiful daughter/Mother of Mine", she was lovely. She has clear color. I thought such person has forte as an actress. I want to be an actress like that. Even though it is hard I think it is important to experience as much as possible.

Q: When you had slump, you drank and cried and had insomnia?
Jeon: Now even if I get slump, I have know-how as to how to overcome in healthy way. I have healing by working-out, listening to music I like and watching pretty flowers. And then I get wasted for a week. Now I am so happy that I drink a lot. I filmed the drama with liver cancer topic, but when I went to the reward trip, I ruined my liver.

Q: You are known for nice personality. There are many who say "Jeon Hye-jin is really nice. She will make it someday."
Jeon: There are people who become a star over night, and there are people who keep going in circles and make own territory. I thought I couldn't do the first option, so I make my way up slowly and last long. When others took elevator and airplane, I put a piece of cement block over a rock, and went up one step at a time. It is still long way to go, but when a project ends like this one I think "I am making solid foundation.".

Q: Do you have next project in mind?
Jeon: I said this whenever I had an interview, but I never got an offer. I am greed for a comedy. I'd like to play a bright and cheerful role. I always did a little cold and aloof character. When I do the crying and yelling scene, I feel stressed. I want to meet a drama I can give laugh. I can do a comedy well, and I wonder why I don't get an offer. Now I don't feel confident about doing variety, feeling a little uncomfortable. Only now I have solid image as an actress, so I think it is not a good idea if my variety image becomes strong. I hope I can give enjoyment through my acting.

JHB fighting! Jeon Hye-bin made an impression in The King and I for me. Too bad she went through such hard time. She sounds like a soft-hearted person because I remember her mentioning how she was hurt with malicious comments doing "Oh Hae-young Again". It is nice she made a friend(Seo Hyun-jin) from the show though (Two ladies went on a long trip later). And too bad her dating with Lee Jun-gi didn't work out (Do you remember Joseon Gunman where she was better than FL?)

I always just thought she’s an okay actress (because they only ever give her stock second lead roles). But when I see her in variety, I like her personality. I’m also still pissed at the real-life shippers that harrassed her for dating Junki. 😡

@fan Thank you so much for posting this interview. I first saw Jeon Hye Bin in the drama Witch Yoo Hee. She often had only minor roles but she's such a scene stealer, for me at least!

I watched with curiosity how Legal High would be remade from J-version, and my thought is that Kdrama just can't be as quirky as J dramas (It could be cultural difference). Still I enjoyed the drama, feeling sorry for Jin Gu memorizing outrageous lines. The show didn't have good feedback and there was criticism on miss casting except Lee Soon-jae who played JG's assistant Goo Se-joong. Lee Soon-jae(85), the oldest working actor in Korea, had an interview recently when the film "Roman" opened in theater in March. The film is about old couple with Alzheimer’s who had married for 45 years (Lee Soon-jae and Jung Young-sook who played Chanel grandma in the Light in your eyes) and their journey to find roman(dream/hope/love). It was noted that between them there are 114 years of acting experience.

According to namuwiki, Lee Soon-jae was born in Hoeryong, now part of North Korea. When he was four years old (1938), his family moved to Seoul where Lee's grandparents were living. They were poor and Lee sold soaps when he was 6th grade. When he was first year in high school (1950) he went out to buy a swimsuit for his brother, and heard the news of Korean war broken out. He majored in philosophy in the Seoul National University later. While in college, Lee joined the play club which became his first step into the world of acting. He did many plays before he went on to acting for screens.

Lee appeared in first KBS drama "I want to become a human too" in 1956, and with it his acting life reflects Korean TV drama history. In 1950 and early 60's the film was so expensive that drama was broadcasted live without using the film (so there was no NG allowed). And in 1950 and 60's all acting was dubbed, which means Lee actually debuted as voice actor. Lee was most active in film in the late 1960s through the 1970s, and later shifted to a primarily TV career. Some of his dramas includes Crisis/PoongWoon(1982), The Wonders of Eastern Medicine/DongUiBoGam(1991), Men of the Bath House (1995), Hur Jun (1999- He played same character HJ's master Yoo Ui-tae of DongUiBoGam), Unstoppable High Kick(2006), Yi San (2007 -He played king Youngjo(Yi Geum in Haechi) and they say actual Youngjo in drawing resembles Lee Soon-jae), Beethoven Virus(2008- He played Oboe player who had Alzheimer’s), Queen Seondeok(2009) and recently Dear My Friends (2016), Money Flower (2017), Live(2018) and Legal High(2019).

In 2007 Lee reached new heights of popularity when he starred in the sitcom Unstoppable High Kick. There was a scene where his stern grandfather character discovered porn, then got caught watching in secret and embarrassed by family. It went viral and got him a nick "Yadong(Porn) Soon-jae". Lee was surprised that even his granddaughter asked for his autograph for her friends. Because of his tight control on himself and tenacity, and mostly nice character roles he played Lee has good image. Whenever scandalous incidents in the industry occur he gets...

...interviewed. What Lee especially pointed out was -that young actors get distracted rather than spending energy on reading scripts, or isolate themselves in their vans rather than practicing with others. He stated ability to memorize, no drinking, and study as the secret of his long acting life.

His 2013 tvN variety "Grandpas Over Flowers" directed by Na Young-seok had a huge hit as 4 flower grandpa/veteran actors in their 70s, Lee, Shin Goo, Park Geun-hyung and Baek Il-seob went on overseas travel. Lee showed energy and strength, resiliency and eagerness to learn even though he was the eldest and with his fast walk without stopping, he got the nick "Jik-jin(go-straight) Soon-jae". In the program he shocked people with his knowledge on current affairs. He also mentioned hoobae actor/actress he cherish- Lee Byung-heon, Kim Myung-min, Lee Seung-gi and Ha Ji-won. (Especially he expressed praise and affection for Kim Myung-min -I am sure he was impressed in Immortal Yi Soon-shin and Beethoven Virus).[Lee Seo-jin said "Sunsaeng-nim, How about me?!"]

Although he acted for ages, he didn't have much luck with awards (until 2018). As the most memorable character, Lee picked Heongsun Daewangun role in 1982's KBS sageuk Poongwoon. Lee was also one-time congressman (14th) in Jungryang-gu in Seoul. He was candidate in nation's 13th election too, but he lost by 756 votes to politician Lee Sang-soo. He beat LSS in the following election. Even though they competed they developed friendship, so that when Lee Sang-soo ran for the office in 2006, Lee actually helped campaigning for him. It is said the reason Lee got into the politics was because his close friend/actor late Lee Nak-hoon talked him into it.
Lee also has been doing life insurance commercial. The law changed so that celebrities without the license cann't be endorsers or spokespeople of related products, so Lee had to work to get insurance planning license and got one at the age of 78.

One time MBC had a special broadcast which dealt with actor Choi Min-soo's assault incident against an old man, and when TV team asked Lee Soon-jae how he never had any scandals, he said his secret was bowing his head apologizing "I am at fault" regardless.
Recently Lee commented related to "Me Too" movement. He said "Me Too" gave him an opportunity to reflect on himself and people should treat their students or subjects as human being. In a CBS radio show Lee said "I was shocked because accused assailants were people I knew. I had doubts but it became reality. I feel so sorry for audiences and public." To hoobae who were victims and gave up on their dream, he said "Since it is not their fault, they should be able to act again." To assailant, he said "They all should leave this industry. Since they repented and promised they would live with such mind, they should keep their promise and live staying low."

...campaign in 2018, there were times 5,8,10 year olds asking questions. When one girl asked "What is Me Too?" Lee responded, "You don't need to know or think such world. It will never happen at your time."

Lee Soon-jae had a few interviews for the film "Roman" [msn,2019.03.21; Starnews,2019.03.31; sedaily, kmib, 2019.04.03] Since Lee debuted with TV drama in 1956 he had over 60 years of acting experience, with 87 plays, 92 broadcasts, and 123 films. He still reads the scripts diligently on the set and believes acting is still his fate which he has to make efforts and tries his best. "Roman" is romance film which tells the story of an old couple- 75 year old husband and 71 years old wife- both diagnosed with Alzheimer's who tried to take care of each other not to burden their children to the end, facing the new chapter in life. Here is Q&A session.

Q: What is the movie about?
Lee: Sense of value for a couple going through life. Husband only has wife and Wife only has husband in the end. Spouse is not someone you just have good time with. You might had passionate love when you met, but as time passes, trust and relying on each other plays bigger role than love. The person you talk during hard times and stay with you in the crisis is your spouse in the end. I think that is sense of value for a couple and forever spirit of roman. Not radiant roman, but unwavering sunset roman.

Q: Wasn't it hard to act an old man with Alzheimer’s?
Lee: I did a few roles with Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s acting is also different depending on its symptoms. In "Roman", I am a light Alzheimer’s patient. Unlike in stage play, they require sensitive emotion and face expression in film so it was not easy. I was worried because if you don't do Alzheimer’s acting right, it could be shown as mentally handicapped or stupid. Actor has to have assurance with one expression and one line of dialogue. If actor is not clear on it, he just ends up doing whatever instructed by the director.
Q: You are in mid 80's already, but look so healthy that you don't seem to have to worry about Alzheimer’s.
Lee: I'm always conscious of this crisis. I will be in big trouble if I get Alzheimer’s. I have to make a living. The most important thing for us actor is ability to memorize the lines. You have to retire if that ability declines.

Q: You have acted for over 60 years, but I heard you still read scripts diligently on the set.
Lee: As I do the drama these days, I find actors' brains got improved so much so that everyone does very well. In the past there were people who couldn't become an actor because their ability in memorization lacked. In my time, even though scripts came out 1 week before, or 10 days before, there were still people who cheated the lines. But these days scripts come out right before shooting, so you have to memorize attentively. That requires practice and discipline. I myself do the test for memorization and memorize data with...

...interests- I memorized about 200 foreign actors and all U.S presidents.

Q: What is changed the most compared to the time you started to act.
Lee: While I watched Laurence Olivier's Hamlet(1954) when I was in college, I got chills and decided on acting profession. The reason I could endure insults like "Ddanddara" (condescending term for entertainer), and not being able to make money was the pride of "doing artistic creative activity". There is historical reason for "acting" not getting recognized as proper profession in the past. Our country doesn't have performance history. So it was profession without roots. In my time actor was called "Ddanddara" which was not recognized as justified profession. And very difficult financially. In my case, I worked with exclusive contract when I signed up with the station in 1964, and did 4 dramas and films a day (didn't get paid per performance). The actor Sin Sung-il did 20 a day- He must have gotten like 1 billion if it were now. It had different system where station picked the talents(tv actors). There was acting plan based on basic attitude and rules. Watching sunbae acting, we learned and made improvements. When I did the play at first I didn't get paid for 10 years, and only when I did the play in 1978 I was paid for the first time. Actors these days have much better circumstances compared to my time. They became rich financially. They have to be thankful and humble. Now actors come in their cars, and leave after finishing their acting parts. So there are many times I think they succeeded in making money, but have long way to go in acting.

I tried to become "Actor who is creative" to express more depth than my lines. There are 3 types of actors- Actor who can do as much as the project, Actor who can't do as much as the project, Actor who can do better than project. For actors who just express what is written, their ability ends there, desire ends there and popularity ends there. They have to break away from the mindset "I just do as much as the project". Just like badook(Korean chess) having base to 9Dan, actors have stages. It is important to which stage they can reach. I also have long way to go and until the day I can't act in good health, I want to keep doing sincerely and creatively. There are actors who throw away themselves for the role, and actors who show off themselves more than project. And Kim Myung-min, Choi Min-sik, Song Kang-ho, Lee Hyung-heon belong to the first group. When I watch them I think they are truly acting properly.

Q: You started acting on stage play. First play was "Death of Salesman".
Lee: It was in Hyun-dae theater and I think it had rave review because we extended the performance. And I received the performance fee for the first time. We did acting because we loved, not to make money.
Q: It is not easy to go to watch a play compared to going to a movie theater.
Lee: If you make a good project there are audiences. But the audience...

...increased a lot these days are women. In 60s because of the society situation, there was hardly any woman in the audience watching a play. More than 80% of audiences in Myung-dong theater were men. And there were hardly any young people, because they didn't have money. But thesedays about 70% are women and young audiences. It really changed a lot.

Q: Who was your idol?
Lee: Many people acted Hamlet but When Laurence Olivier did "Die or Live" I got chills. I felt like him putting his hands on my heart, and thought it was real art. Later I found it was given- We were just ddanddara, but he was an actor who was highly regarded and treated as artist.
Q: You said if you forget the line more than 5 times, you will give up acting.
Lee: When people are pulling all-nighters on the set, how nuisance could it be if I say "I am sorry, let's do it again" 5 times. This is matter of pride. One time when we finished rehearsal, I saw one hoobae wrote the line. I said "What is this? Take it out. Since you are lead actress, if you do cheating, other hoobae will follow. This is matter of your pride. If you can't memorize the lines, you should quit." We have pride so we memorize skipping sleep. So scripts are rainbow- Once you memorize, you color yellow, next blue, and last when you finish, it is black. That way you can compete.

Q: These days the actor, entertainer profession became no.1 as "Most wanted job".
Lee: But I think it will become no.10 due to "Burning Sun" incident. In our time even though we were poor we had pride. There are some very hard working guys these days too. Actors like Choi Min-sik, Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-heon, Kim Myung-min work really hard, but there are also people who do without putting efforts in. For acting if you dig in more professionally, new things come out. You have to keep learning. Then your view changes and you can break off your frame. That is our profession's joy, value and payoff. There is no completion in acting. You have to keep challenge and find new things.

Q: Like you mentioned, entertainment industry is on uproar with "Burning Sun" incident.
Lee: These days young idol became iconized. We have to feel the responsibility for young kid to become an idol. Celebrities' behavior have communicability, so even though they are not public figure, it has similar concept in their roles. So they have to be careful and keep themselves in check. They think "I am celebrity so what's wrong if I am carefree. This is the art" behaving disgracefully. They shouldn't. "Burning Sun" incident is something shouldn't have happened at all. There is no privilege for entertainers.
I don't understand why they did such thing when all they have to do is to self-control themselves and do good acting and good singing.
Even if there is an offer for business, they shouldn't fall into the temptation. It is same with Seong-ri. He is only 30 years old, but people around him put useless hope into him. In my...

I think jdramas can do cultural-mockery a lot better, because they tend to mock their own over-committment and obsessions. Kdramas can be funny but their tendency to humanize and give psychological reasons for obsessions just rein in the quirk. Also, i think korea might be less likely to joke about excessive greed, because of all the scandals.

...time it was hard to make a living, but now there is no such worries so no need to do such thing. They have to have a sense of responsibility.

Q: You did romance acting in the film "Roman". What is Lee Soon-jae's roman?
Lee: I did all the roman I wanted when I was young. I did kiss scenes, bed scenes all that. Now my roman is acting better in good health to the end. I think I should do something more seriously. I have to do old age's worth. I like acting. Artist is carefree you see. There is freedom of thoughts and freedom of life.
Q: You've done so many projects. Is there any project you want to do?
Lee: King Lear of Shakespeare. And I'd like to play a character like Shylock in Merchant of Venice.
Q: Is there any more plan for "Grandpa over flowers"?
Lee: I'd like to go in summer if everyone can work out the schedule. Park Keun-hyung said he wanted to go to Cuba. We are in talks.

Q: After having over 60 years of acting life, how Lee Soon-jae wants to be remembered as an actor?
Lee: I am not an actor who shined and enjoyed all the glory. I haven't even received an award in 80s. They didn't even give me one from the important project everyone remembered. But looking back now, that was not important. I am ok if people remember me as a person who lived hard and honest. I am a person who tried hard.
Q: Are you happy?
Lee: I am happy. I have never bowed to get something in my life. Never did it to get a role. I might had disadvantage living that way. If I drank like others I might've been able to save more money and being treated better. But I find that was not big loss after all. Since I still have energy, I work and saved enough so that my wife could live her old age without financial worries, and was able to help grandkids, and didn't cause trouble to the society- I thinks that is enough. I don't expect more. I am very thankful and feel fortunate.

Many more good years LSJ-nim! He was most memorable as Hur Jun's master in Hur Jun for me (Hur Jun was the only drama made me regretting not going to the med school heh).
btw I have to work on not going over one post :(

So last week I was laid out with a severe cold. I trekked on through work, until Thursday, when I can into contact with a child. By then I just knelled over and had to call into work on Friday and spent the next three days thinking they would be my last on this earth (yes I know, DRAMA !!!).

So I was home going through thinking of sweet death when I saw a Celine Dion interview.

Now, I have always loved the woman for no other reason than she is who she is and that is what is awesome about her.

So she is wrapping up her residency in Las Vegas and I was looking to see if I can get a ticket without taking out a second mortgage to do so.

Well, no tickets and I was sad.

Then, a notice popped up on my phone. She announced a world tour....and she is coming to my hometown.....and since I have a particular credit card I can get my ticket starting Monday morning.

Y'all, I am pretty effing excited if I can get a good seat to this.

Currently watching: The Item. (I'm reposting part of a comment I made on a recap page.) I think this show would've been better with hour-long episodes. True, there's a lot going on, but it's a bit too piece-meal for my viewing habits. Also, the short eps break up the tension and flow immensely. I've been keeping up with it, and I have to say I've enjoyed it. Since the premise is almost exactly like The Lost Room (minus the creepy hotel room in another dimension), The Item has intrigued me. I'll reserve judgement until the bitter end (4 more to go!) This show could stand to be a shade darker, and less moustache-twirling (We get it. He's a psychopath.)

I was hoping for some background on how Se-hwang found his first Item and discovered what it could do. I get the feeling the items may drive a person insane when used often. And how he's been manipulating every.thing. without anyone noticing. Money can't really buy everything, can it?

The Item isn't the best at conveying the suspense (not horror) genre, but it's kept me entertained.

My Healing Love. I like it. It's kind of like candy, easy to pick up, nothing too heavy or enlightening. Just breezy, easy to watch while sewing.

Touch Your Heart. Finally got that sticky sweetness off my fingers. Very cute, and let's face it, those two are unstoppable at cute.

The Fiery Priest. Hahahaha! I love it, and will miss it when it's over. (4 eps left!)

The More You Eat with Don Spike. I want all of the food! The BBQ episodes have changed my mind (a little!) on Texas BBQ lol. Fun show; I've never been into variety/reality shows, but this combines my two loves: cute boys and food.

I will probably dig into some other shows I've started...

Se hwang was already a psychopath even before he got his hands on the first item.

I would not put him in the same league as the kid that had the bracelet. He has bad tendencies but he could always change as we saw that he was a loving grandson and friend.

I do appreciate a good bad guy. Item seems to be going for noir, so hopefully it means the bad guy getting his punishment. I've been waiting to watch the last eps. (They will likely disappoint me!) I have a feeling I may have to start writing K-drama fan fiction soon lol

All in all, I'm glad it wasn't an Item per episode, however, I sorta wish it was just to keep it moving and less exposition. The best episode was the recap of the hours before the incident. It gave faces to the victims, and a little explanation about the items.

Hey everyone \/
I am sorry to see so many beanies down with illness this week! Seems like the col/flu season is a bad one that is lingering, boo. Wishes for speedy recoveries to everyone battling sickness, truly. Gosh, it's been such a busy week with work and getting my taxes ready (meh bleh) that I'm just coming up for air. I'm watching a slew of K-entertainment shows and a couple of dramas of which Doctor Prisoner is my fav. A friend just sent the audiobook app for Orphan Train and I checked out Last Boat Out of Shanghai from the library. Hopefully I can listen to a book while getting in some hiking this weekend. The K-entertainment news is pretty disillusioning at the moment. I feel sorry for the victims and those affected secondhand (just thinking of Joonyoung's parents who wet on 1N2D breaks my heart for them). Just live right, you know?
Have a great weekend looking for the bright side! owl

I'm so excited for Shin Sung Rok's new drama: Perfume!!!. I don't know what much to expect from the initial synopsis. I'm just glad SSR is returning to grace the small screen with his acting, since I don't know when he will go back to musicals and go on a drama hiatus 🤣.

I think the cast combination for Perfume is new and refreshing. I'm only familiar with 3 out of the 4 main cast. This will be Shin Sung Rok and Go Woon Hee first main lead role after years of supporting or 2nd lead roles (especially SSR) 🥳. It will be Kim Min Kyu's first lead role in a public broadcast drama. It will also be Cha Ye Ryun's comeback drama after 3 years.

I hope SSR's good ratings mojo continues. Believe it or not, his last 3 dramas all ended up at no 1 in its timeslot. Not saying its due to him, its an ensemble effort. But it would be awesome if he can continue his streak. No pressure though. Lol

I need more info for 'When The Devil Calls Your Name'. For an upcoming TVN drama, it is so quiet with no promo and timeslot yet. Hua3. I tried getting more info from JKH and Lee El's instagram but they don't post updates much too. 🤣

Reading the synopsis on MyDramaList (which came from DB anyway!!!) I am toying with the idea of trying it out. For one thing it's different and for another, it has Jung Kyung Ho in it. It's all a matter of time ... whether I have any!!!

Hi! First post on DramaBeans. I just watched the first episode of Beautiful World and it managed to destroy my heart within the first twenty minutes. Without spoiling, the style of videography in it seems to be pretty unique in my amateur eyes as well. Who else will be watching?

Welcome to DB and to the OT @korokoro Koro92,

I was not thinking of picking up another show for a while, since I envision much work cropping up from different areas of my life. However your post has gotten me interested to check out Beautiful World. I'm interested to learn (just by observing shows and checking up YouTube) a bit more about cinematography and mise-en-scène. Your mention of a unique style of videography has me intrigued. I was hesitating as this has school violence and much conflict... which I could do with less of, but on the other hand, I guess I need to see for myself. :-D

I didn't plan to watch it but I did. I liked ep 1, though I find it draggy because of the ep length. I wish all dramas can maintain the ep length at a maximum 60minutes.

Hello Beanies! This is the first time I will be participating in OT. I just want to share how sad I am with the recent scandal rocking the Korean entertainment industry. Every day, I am dreading the thought that one of the idols/actors I treasure the most will be involved in that scandal. And then just a few minutes ago, I read about Park Hyungsik (Strong Woman Do Bong Soon) enlisting in the military either May or June. It’s a bit heartbreaking but at the same time, I am proud of him as he will serve his country like a loyal citizen should be. And on another happy note, I am looking forward to the airing of Her Private Life this coming Wednesday. Park Min Young is my girl crush since her role as Secretary Kim. Plus, Absolute Boyfriend will air on May. I am so excited on this one as I have watched the Japanese drama Zettai Kareshi and it’s one of the best jdrama I have ever seen. Added to that is Yeo Jin Gu will play the main lead here which adds to my growing excitement. I wish the show will have great OSTs as well. It’s one of the things I like in a drama. Lastly, I am so happy with Hyun Bin’s nomination in this year’s Baeksang Awards. I must admit the Best Actor category is a tough competition but I fervently hope Hyun Bin will bring home the bacon. That’s it folks. Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Welcome to OT! Her Private Life wasn't on my radar initially, but the interesting premise, and promise of a balanced look at fan life, piqued my interest.

Hi @gemwendz Welcome to OT. I was wondering some years ago about Absolute Boyfriend. It was mentioned and photos even were taken but of different celebrities ... then nothing. I didn't bother to research what happened, so I don't know, but I'm glad to know it's finally about to air. :-)

Thank you @growingbeautifully! I didn’t know Absolute Boyfriend had a different set of casts before. It just hit my radar when YJG was said to be involved in the project. But I watched the jdrama way back in 2010 I think. And I liked the story a lot. I don’t usually follow another adaptation of a drama that I really like so much because I want to preserve my impression of that one. But I am making an exception on Zettai Kareshi because of Jin Gu. I hope Absolute Boyfriend will be as successful as that of the jdrama. 😊

Hey Beanies,

I've became obsessed with playing games as of these days, I put a lot of time into playing games and reading books which is great! I've browsed through short kdramas to watch, somehow found Splash Splash Love which is enjoyable to watch and it's only 2 hours of my life so it's not that much of a time investment. I was worried it may go down a similar route to Moon Lovers, I was happy it didn't end that way.
