Song Jae-rim cast in new KBS mystery-romance

Actor Song Jae-rim (Clean With Passion For Now) has been cast in a new KBS drama called, Let Me Hear Your Song. Possibly joining him is Gugudan’s Kim Se-jung (School 2017), who was also offered a lead role and is currently still in the “favorably considering” stage.

The drama is a mystery romance centered around a woman named Hong Yi-young who conceals many secrets. She has a peculiar condition in which she can only fall asleep when listening to people singing off-key. But she also has a deeply buried, forgotten memory that holds traces of a lost love and is the key to revealing the whole story behind a gruesome murder.

Song Jae-rim has been offered the part of Nam Joo-wan, an assistant professor of music and the conductor of a philharmonic orchestra. The character is described as exceptionally talented in the arts and possessing a quirky charm.

Writing for the mystery romance is writer Kim Min-joo, and directing will be done by PD Lee Jung-mi.

Song Jae-rim is another actor who’s been the second lead for far too many projects. I’m not sure if he’ll be getting the girl this time around, but I sure do hope he is! Please drama-gods, we beseech you!

KBS drama Let Me Hear Your Song is currently being planned to air later this summer in August.

Look what you've done, @mary... Prompted a reprise of the Kdrama Bingo Trope-a-thon which @cloggie and @egads unsuspectingly triggered. It may have been the best thing to come out of FOX BRIDE STAR, but I didn't watch the show, so I really don't know. ;-)

Not only was the drama horrible, other than Song Jae Rim none of the actors could act (but I guess that did make SJR stand out from the crowd).

Please let it be Rim who will sing off-key. Please let it be his quirky charm. There's no rule saying an exceptionally talented conductor should be a good singer, right?

Lol and then we will have a hilarious subversion of the male lead makes the female lead go to sleep 😂

Take one conductor, deposit in noraebang, stir in a handful of rowdy classical musicians who know how to par-tay, and marinate overnight in soju. Voilà! Sleep-inducing off-key singing. Lots of it.

Or maybe maestro sings just fine, but female lead hears it as off-key. If he's really tone deaf, how could he be a conductor?

All of which raises the burning question: Can we perhaps infer that he sings in the shower??? Heh heh heh... Will have to tune in to study the hydroacoustics. For science.

@sukstan,
I agree, SJR has a spiffy 'do in the above photo. And his bangs are down, so we know he's a good guy. No need for concern that he's a musical assassin -- unless he starts murdering the classics, a la Spike Jones. ;-)

😆 Perhaps there is no rule, but it certainly demonstrates failure in the music education curriculum he has received! Since sight singing is part of fundamental musicianship training, not being able to sing in tune would negate descriptors such as "exceptional" or "talented" for a musician.

However if soju is in the mix in combination of a hot shower as @pakalanapikake suggests......

So he needs to be drunk all the time in order for her to sleep...best couple goals ever ahahah

I'm not totally tone deaf but I can have iffy relative pitch, which is why I'm a pianist. I also 'played' violin, but playing 3-octave scales without open strings, I'd go up and come back down and find myself a half-step away from where I started. So I'm sure my ear-training professor was flinching a bit at my sight-singing.

I'm also reminded of Glenn Gould, who used to hum along when he played piano. As far as I could tell, his humming had no relation to what he was playing.

TLDR - a conductor could possibly sing out of tune. 😬

@blnmom April 2, 2019 at 9:19 PM

Oh, wow. That's fascinating about Glenn Gould. So it is possible that the maestro in this drama could indeed have iffy pitch. Thanks!

@beantown,
Thanks for that link. It's lovely, evocative, and meditative. A Kdrama in 5:33.

I looked around to find out the name of the book Lee Min-ki is reading in the music video, and found an interesting review of the album Slip Away. ("The Day Before" is the 4th track.)
http://seoulbeats.com/2012/04/slipping-away-with-nell/
It sounds like what used to be called a "concept album" back in Ye Olden Days Of Rock. The reviewer mentions the connections between tracks.

The book is John Berger‘s anthology And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos. The closeup of text @1:48 is of “3. Leaving,” a part of 8 Poems on Emigration, included in the anthology.

You are welcome. It is a rare species @pakalanapikake (I started to say, "Isn't it special?" but then I was sure you'd hear Dana Carvey, too)
I love that you love it as well; I feel it is a perfect marriage of thought, song, cinematography with a lagniappe of male pulchritude.

Re: John Bergers anthology. Strangely, I am (still) first and foremost a reader. So rather than chasing down a lipstick or a stuffed animal, I make it my mission to get the books featured in a drama,....and I love how so many dramas reference a book- W, My Love from Another Star, the list goes on! But for some reason, this book has been hard for me to buy...

1

@beantown April 1, 2019 at 3:58 PM

"a lagniappe of male pulchritude"

Yer slayin' me, Sis! You're the only other person I know who uses "lagniappe" -- which for the benefit of uri Francophone Beanies is Acadian lingo from New Orleans. "A little something extra that is included gratis," such as the 13th beignet in a baker's dozen. ;-)

Pulchritude. Sounds vaguely naughty, eh?! Another great word rescued from oblivion here at DramaBeans. The pulchritude on display is this video is positively effulgent.

"Isn't that special..." Now that's a blast from the past. ;-)

I've been intrigued by some of the foreign books and literature that crop up in Kdramas, such as Goethe's poem "Erlkönig" in VOICE, and M. Scott Peck's People of the Lie in MAWANG. Our Souls at Night -- or rather, the movie made from the book -- cropped up in SHOULD WE KISS FIRST, and was very apropos for the Kdrama. And the reference to the excellent Japanese movie LOVE LETTER was also great.

I found a recording of John Berger reading all 8 of him emigration poems on YouTube. Truth to tell, I wasn't that taken by them. Partly that's because I prefer to read poetry rather than listen to it. And partly because I'm more attuned to poetry set to music -- such as the music of this video. To each their own. ;-)

I’m broken I’m sorry for reducing such a meaningful MV to just the aesthetics. I’m. Broken. And I have issues.

And this is probably a defense mechanism, focusing in the shallow makes me forget what actually happens in the MV. He always dies. I don’t need to be reminded of it.

2

Don't forget the lip dip.

The director clearly fell in love with him 10 minutes into filming. There was no other point to that M/V. Come back and bask in his glory.

I actually first heard of him on Dramabeans (thanks to you Mary), and then watched him in Thumping Spike totally by chance... And I really loved him in that ! I even watched Nail Shop Paris (yes, I know) because I was wary of Surplus Princess (heard so many things about this drama that I didn't know if I wanted to invest my time in this) and I wanted to see more of him =)

I just watched the first episode, and actually kind of liked it, but then I read that the series was a mess at the end, and I hesitated to continue. But since it seems that it's just the last episode that is not that good, I may watch the drama, and just skip the last episode ^^ (I did that for cheese in the trap actually : I could not bear to watch the end since I read that it was awful. Too bad because the webtoon was so awesome !).

2

Surplus Princess is actually a great drama. It's IMO totally worth having to deal with a crappy ending. It's funny and clever, like, really clever, not drama clever. If nothing else, the central friendship is one of the best in dramaland.

Thanks for this casting news, @tccolb! This sounds like it's right up IT Goddess(TM) @mary's alley. I really enjoyed Song Jae-rim's turn as Dr. Choi in CLEAN WITH PASSION FOR NOW, especially when he started slinging the aegyo and desensitizing skinship at Yoon Kyun-sang's microbe-phobe, Jang Sun-gyeol. He was delightfully dippy a la Kim Young-kwang in LOOKOUT and Namgoong Min in CHIEF KIM. Utterly cracktastic. More, please. ;-)

The heroine has insomnia caused by a deficiency of off-key singing? What new maladies will Kdrama writers think of next?!

My biggest reservations: (1) "mystery romance," (2) "a deeply buried, forgotten memory that holds traces of a lost love, " and (3), "a gruesome murder" -- not necessarily in that order. ;-)

3

@pakalanapikake, RH is His Royal Hotness, the Last Emperor, Lee Hyuk, as played to goofy psychopath perfection by Shin Sung Rok.

2

very valid question @pakalanapikake. Also, The last empress is the best worst show I ever watched. So so bad that it's good. Makjang at it's finest. The main character, ouri Royal hotness is arguably bipolar, being horrible and murderous in an episode and beautiful and perfect in another. of course, I buy everything and completely redeem him (sarcasm but also no, but yes).

3

Royal Hotness, the shatterer of moral compasses

3

Speaking of Sungrok, isn't he considering a fantasy romcom for his next project? Why is it raining casting news for our faves. Please don't let this be an April fool...

4

@justme, @egads,

Thanks for filling me in on Royal Hotness. I feel like I've heard this somewhere before -- years ago. Maybe I'm slipping my clutch and thinking of Lee Min-hot... ;-)

2

@mary im hoping for a kdrama musical with him as a lead or at least a prominent character... maybe thats too much to ask

2

"In dramaland, murder is the new romcom." ROFLMAO, @mary! I love it. But is it actually a trope? Cue up "You Always Hurt the One You Love." ;-)

And because of SJR's spiffy haircut in the above photo:
#128: Tonsorial Indicator of Evil (aka Semaphore Bangs).
Code: Bangs down = good. Hair up off of forehead = evil. As far as I know, this only applies to males.

If you count Clean With Passion where he's just a second lead, that possibly makes 2 dramas, but I didn't watch that and I heard he was more busy bromancing Yoon Kyun-sang behind the scenes than being sweet to Kim Yoo-jung.

His live-in Microbial Desensitization Therapy stint with Yoon Kyun-sang in CLEAN WITH PASSION FOR NOW slayed me. I had no idea he could be so funny. I watched FLOWER BOY RAMEN SHOP, THE MOON EMBRACING THE SUN, TWO WEEKS (his assassin role) early in my Kdrama watching, and ON YOUR WEDDING DAY a month or two ago. -- CWPFN is the one that made the biggest impression on me.

@bbstl,
SJR was indeed in CLEAN PASSIONATELY, alas as second lead. (sniff) I got a much bigger bang out of his playful bromance with Yoon Kyun-sang than I did from the OTP. Considering how the germophobe practically lived in a bubble, his touchy-feely headshrinker came as a tactile shock. Think of an over-caffeinated Chief Kim pursuing the Gluttonous Psychopath, or LOOKOUT's Prosecutor Jang Do-han unloading a broadside of aegyo at his humorless, stodgy colleague.

1

@pakalanapikake that comparison to Chief Kim really gets to me! 🤣😍

1

@bbstl April 2, 2019 at 7:13 PM

Remember when Chief Kim ambush-smooched Gluttonous Psychopath? Well, at one point SJR leaps up into Yoon Kyun-sang's arms (into a princess carry, no less) and gives him an adoring look that had me ROFLMAO. Alas, I cannot recall the context. Whatever. His teasing is every bit as outrageous as Kim Young-kwang's flirtatiousness towards his fellow prosecutor in LOOKOUT. Oh, the glint in his eye.
