Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 20-26, 2019

And the to-watch list grows. This week, we had two new romance dramas join the mix — Angel’s Last Mission: Love and One Spring Night. Both had really great premieres, but it was the former that ended up taking first place with 9.2 percent. After Doctor Prisoner and now Angel’s Last Mission, I’d say that KBS is on a lucky streak.

The other Wednesday-Thursday shows are struggling, however, as shown with My Absolute Boyfriend and Rescue Me 2. Their ratings certainly aren’t awful considering the average numbers these days, but it’s still sad to see.

As for the weekend shows, I have some good news for A Beautiful World fans. The last two episodes had the highest ratings for the entire series, with episode 15 getting 4.8 percent and 16 getting 5.8 percent. Very nice!

Congratulations for Beautiful World that finished its series with a successful bang. 5.8% is a really good rating and I'm so happy for the casts and crew.

I am glad Abyss ratings went back up to 3% in Ep. 6. When Ep. 5 fell to 2.743%, I was afraid viewers had dropped it.

I am very surprised that they didn't, coz honestly I am on the edge of dropping it however didn't because of Park Bo Young.. Had this show starred by somebody else, I would have dropped it since the first, I think.

It would be great if there were a way for stations to discuss their programs; “Hey, we’re showing a comedy-crime drama on Monday-Tuesday. Oh, you too? That won’t do.” “Let’s all show romantic dramas in the Wednesday-Thursday slot and may the best show win.”

I've dropped all the shows I was watching...dropped Your Private Life, Abyss, fastfowarded through Confession to the end. The only show I'm watching right now, ffwding, rather, is Mother of Mine. I only like the hot publisher and the ditzy writer's story. Boring, boring, boring.

And the sageuk/period dramas are competing on the weekend slot. Next weekend ARTHDAL will add to NOKDU and DIFFERENT DREAMS.
The schedule is usually shown months ahead so I don't know what the deal is.

I'd say this for Nokdu. The drama is really good but the ratings don't reflect it. I heard the same is true for Different Dreams. Haven't started it yet but I heard good reviews from people

Hi @kiara. I returned yesterday from my trip to the Balkans and I am now out of kdrama silence. RR is the first thing I am checking out. It is good to get back into the mix.
I took a look at the average AGB Nielsen ratings for the entire run of the last 6 sageuks I have watched and this is what I came up with:
1. NF: 8.0% (through 16 episodes) and unofficial. I came up with the average and my math may be off;
2. HAECHI (SBS) 6.8%;
3. TCC (tvN): 8.4%;
4. KINGDOM (Netflix): unavailable;
5. 100DMP (tvN): 9.0%; and
6. GRAND PRINCE (TV Chosun): 2.97%.
MR. SUNSHINE, which I did not watch, had an average of 12.95%.
@audrey11ohduhree,
I agree with you that NF is very good. I will be catching up from episode 12. For nowadays I think its ratings are decent.
I enjoyed all of the above dramas.
The sageuk genre is certainly back in kdrama land in 2019 which I think is great. I was hoping to watch DD but I wasn’t able to work it in.

2

WB @marcusnyc20 bong-soo :).
NOKDU is a real keeper. I have no complains.
I think we are going to have a serious case of sageuk fatigue by the end of the year lol. We still have more to come. MY COUNTRY etc.

I already like the beginning of One Spring Night, so hopefully it succeeds and the ratings (at least) hold steady. I like this writer even though I think they dropped the ball in the last series ending.

I like the Rom Coms okay, but I am waiting for something with a little meat on its bones.

PD Ahn has a cult followers but his dramas hardly attract the masses. I was surprised that PRETTY NOONA had that high of a rating but I guess JTBC did promote the heck out of it.
We all heard "Stand by your man" too many times before the drama started.
It's too bad they forgot to hire Jung Sung Joo with the hype.

One Spring Night has also set up all the usual K-drama tropes, in addition to how similar it feels to Pretty Noona. BUT I loved the opening episodes, and am hoping it will subvert the tropes - they already revealed the kid and boyfriend to one another so *fingers crossed*

I'm worried about the mother because I have had enough of her in PRETTY NOONA. If I could change anything, I'd cast a different actress.

I'm happy for Angel’s Last Mission: Love: Shin Hye Sun can keep her title of queen of ratings!

Still madly disappointed for Different Dreams and Save Me 2: the netizens are sleeping on the two best dramas currently airing. They both are and will probably stay in my top 5 of this year.

Voice 3 is too high and doesn't deserve its success but at least it's the last season.

Save Me 2 has a stellar cast but it is not a good as the first season and is a bit too funny for a dark cult drama. It makes complete sense why people aren't into it.

Shin hye sun is far from being a queen of ratings that title still belongs to Song hye kyo and other hallyu stars. She's not bad for a newbie but she has a long way to go to compete against real A-list stars.

Different dreams doesn't have star power and MBC never promoted it properly so no surprise there either.

Only the first first 2 episodes in japan were decent.
The return to Korea brought us back exactly at the start of s2: so what's the point of making 2 seasons?
For me, there's a reason for the male lead to act like a jerk: it's because he's one of the main villains of the story. A new Mo Tae Gu: a killer with mental disease whose family ( i think it's his family) has excited all his killer instincts through drugs and hypnosis.
But for a mysterious reason, instead of catching kim, Kwon Joo, her team and her allies are doing their best to save him and give him all the pass.

The ratings for Weds is kinda interesting.....

Only Angel and Absolute Boyfriend are in direct competiton since both air at 10 pm. One Spring Night does not really compete with any drama, it is the only drama that airs at 9pm. HPL starts at 930pm. Save Me 2 at 11pm.

I thought One Spring Night would have higher ratings since it is the earliest drama. But it doesn't seem to be the case as of ep 1-4.

8-9pm is considered early. 10 and 11pm is the best time slot with more adult viewers.
SKY CASTLE, THE FIERY PRIEST,LAST EMPRESS, DOCTOR PRISONER etc all had high ratings. Even PRETTY NOONA was at 11pm.

I thought MBC was hoping to shake things up by changing their drama timeslot. I guess it is not working in their favor yet.

MBC is currently winning the Mon-Tues ratings battle (by a small margin), let's see if the new time slot will impact the upcoming Mon-Tues drama. MBC will be airing Partners of Justice S2, so there is a possibility the ratings can be high, assuming PoJ S1 viewers will continue with S2. Hohoho

@coolgirl Calling spring night a stupid romcom is just too inappropriate. We are entitled to our own opinion but please be considerate. The drama is a hard work of all the cast and crew and you may not like it but don't put it down just because you like your ratings queen. It is really not cool.

Well,the reviews are like very bad...
But if stupid is too offensive, let just say that it's an overrated drama, even by its own network which it gave far more exposure than it deserves. Esepcially compared to Different Dreams.
I don't deny that the cast and crew are trying their best but it has never been, in any case, a guarantee that the result is good and it shouldn't be a reason to not admit it.

Stupid and now overrated. Oh well that is your opinion and i respect it. FYI, it was not promoted as well too. MBC is lacking in that department. I never said that hard work guarantees success and what if spring night is a flop in ratings? As long as PD and writer delivers a good story, i am okay with it. Point here, choose your words carefully:)

No i won't choose carefully my words because i realize i feed a troll.
The problem is not my wording, but your intent to make your incapacity to deal with your hurt feelings on people's disagreeing with your taste an issue.
Overrated is used on every social media and forums: people make lists of the dramas or actors they think are overrated, it's called having unpopular opinions and everyone is ok with it because we're not the same and don't have to like the same things.
So please like what you want, i could assure you it doesn't matter for me.
For me,i'll dislike what i want and won't however listen anymore to such a request.

To begin with, people liking what i consider to be stupid or overrated drama is not my business: 90% of the production of the kdramaland is guilty pleasure after all.
I'm concerned by the quality of what i watch and it's enough.
But if someone try to argue with me that a drama which i spot as making a special efforts for elevating the quality or breaking the genre conventions, doesn't matter because nobody care about talent and the point is just to be big in the industry, i can let it pass.
Anyway, i was talking about One Spring Night, last Han Jin Min's drama which is airing on MBC.
The network in tweeting a lot about it all the week, while the trailer for next episodes of Different Dreams wasn't even shared after the broadcast (one day after it still hasn't been shared).
They also tweeted the trailer for the episode who aired on saturday just was few hours before the broadcast and called it a day.

It's normal, it was the premier of One Spring Night. But because it's a Netflix drama too, they don't release any videos on their youtube channel.

For Different Dreams, the story is not an easy one and attracts less people.

But in general way, MBC is bad for advirtising dramas... For Hospital Ship with Ha Ji Won, they forgot a lot of times to annouce the episodes will air later or not at all because of football.

3

You sound so high and mighty with your comments I probably will regret replying.
What you consider quality maybe different for others.
Nobody cares about talents? Please have a cookie.

ONE SPRING NIGHT just started and you already called it stupid. The PD is known for the quality of his works. Maybe you should check out END OF THE WORLD, A WIFE'S CREDENTIALS, SECRET LOVE AFFAIR, HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE, WHITE TOWER.....but you probably will call them stupid too.

3

@kiara It's not me it's the person with who i had an argument which said that nobody care about talent.
He/she said that i was stupid to refuse to consider Song Hye Kyo as someone bigger than Shin Hye Sun, that the fact that i considere SHS a better actress is irrelevant (basically all my opinions were irrelevant), that everybody except idiots and ignorants like me know that talent is not needed to be big in the industry and that making oneself a major player in the industry is the only thing that counts.

I can't proved it anymore since the entire discussion was removed,even the comments of the beanies who tried to calm things.

You're all persistent with One Spring Night: i have no taste for melo in general and this one especially because of its cast.
It takes an exceptional quality to change my mind: A wife's credentials was indeed excellent in many ways but mostly during its first half that treated the question of education from an angle that i have never seen before in kdramas. But it dragged a lot when the plot centered on the affair and it lost all direction after the questions of divorce and child custody were treated. It was just drifting away though the cast stayed very strong.

I will never watched but really never watched a drama called secret love affair that's for sure. I don't even want to know the synopsis
The end of the world is on my watchlist since ages but i often forget about it and i'm rarely in the right mood to start it.
I'm watching the japanese version of the White Tower, which is currently airing because of the praise received by the original, and while i have no taste for medical drama.
So i'm picky but not as stubborn as i seem to you. If not i would have never started k-drama.

1

@kurama It's probably normal for all the reasons you mentioned, but i still needed to rant because it was frustrating in all cases.
But apparently it's not ok for few readers here.

They aired only one episode of Different Dreams because of football last week but thankfully did an announcement about it.
Apparently football messes all drama schedules. More reason for me to dislike this sport.

I'm surprised that One Night Spring is on Netflix and not Kocowa. I'm totally lost with those questions of licence and rights...

I am not surprised Absolute Boyfriend is not doing all that well; I think it succeeded in Japan because it was presented as a light, fluffy romantic comedy, just like the manga, where the spin on the kdrama version is a little more serious: an ugly, embarrassing breakup, a woman struggling to get and keep professional recognition in a competitive, male-dominated field while still grieving over the loss of her father, a psycho stalker, a cold, impersonal yet shady robot manufacturer who only cares about the bottom line... the cute costume hijinks are buried under a blanket of serious issues. And the human issues are so large that our robot friend comes off as childlike, plastic, and more of a prop than a character. I'll still watch it, but more to see how they deal with these plot problems they've created for themselves than the actual drama.
