Hyun Bin, Sohn Ye-jin team up with Legend of the Blue Sea writer for tvN romance

Well, this is certainly some star-studded news on both the onscreen and offscreen fronts. Writer Park Ji-eun, best known for her mega-hit You From Another Star, is making a much-anticipated return to dramaland since 2016’s Legend of the Blue Sea. Her new drama will air on tvN and has since cast Hyun Bin (Memories of the Alhambra) and Sohn Ye-jin (Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food) to star. The show is titled Love’s Crash Landing for now, but reports indicate that it’s a working title, so I’m really hoping they switch it out for something else. (It just doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, does it?)

The synopsis of the drama has a lot of potential for opposites-attract romance, comedy, and action, which sounds like right up this writer’s alley. Sohn Ye-jin will play the heiress of a prominent chaebol family who somehow finds herself on the wrong side of the DMZ in a freak paragliding accident. I wouldn’t give her much odds of survival in North Korea if it weren’t for Hyun Bin’s special forces officer who finds himself hiding and protecting her.

I’m not exactly sure how a North Korean soldier ends up protecting a rich, South Korean heiress, but I’m looking forward to finding out. The story is certainly fresh and I foresee a lot of cute bickering between the tough special forces soldier and chaebol pair, which of course will lead to them falling in love. And there’s nothing like a good North-South divide to raise the stakes, so I’m expecting a lot of good narrative conflict thrown in there.

Directing is Lee Jung-hyo, whose credits include The Good Wife, Life on Mars, and Romance is a Bonus Book. The drama doesn’t have a set premiere date yet, but will air sometime in the latter half of this year.

The first time I started "Legend of the Blue Sea" I had the same experience of not getting past the first episode. Then I tried it again and loved it. I re-watched it with my wife and she loved it. In fact, it is the only K-drama that my wife has seen twice.

The premise, if done well, is right up my alley. I have mildly positive feelings towards the writer? Never completely gotten into her dramas. I did find them fun enough, just never got emotionally engaged. That said, I'm already more drawn towards this pairing than those of her previous works.

I absolutely love Son Ye-jin and I'm interested in seeing her in something light and fun after her last drama so I'll definitely at least be checking this out.

Life On Mars is based on english TV show. The korean version is a good remake, they changed the date to adapt the story to korea history. The hero tive traveled in the past.

In Tunnel the hero time traveled in the futur

what i mean is they have similar plot in sense of time travel and they were both detective/police-:)

I love those two and to have them being romantically paired is a great news. But I'm torn because I'm not the biggest fan of this writer. I always found her romcom to be lacking in term of emotional beats. It just didn't grab me in the heart, no matter how hilarious yet swoony the OTP are. The only exception is The Producers which stole my heart with IU's character. So I just hope that this one will be more emotionally satisfying.

It was also mine! Gong Hyo Jin and Cha Tae Hyun got me to watch it but Cindy was my favorite character. It was my proper introduction to IU, the actress. I say ‘proper’ because Bel Ami didn’t happen and I don’t remember it 🙃

Can't decide who I like better, cause my heart melts when I think of Hyun bin dimpling at me leaning on the door frame in that classic scene from Alhambra... I rewound multiple times to watch and rewatch it.

Yeah, she'll be doing silly things like wearing high heels in the jungle, so he'll grab her shoes, and break off the heels...hm, think I saw that somewhere...and she'll be squealing, so he'll clamp his hand over her mouth, and pull her tight against him, as the soldiers pass, then they'll look at each other, and mwah! Or she'll see a creepy crawly, or a snake, in the tent, and she'll scream, and he'll come running in...omg, it's so deliciously romantic I can't wait, seriously

I would say wearing heels while in the jungle and paragliding. They've been saying for years now that the white before Memorial Day and after Labor Day is passe. 😂😂😂

1

What's a chaebol heiress doing in N Korea? Her plane crashlands in the jungle, she's doing business with a N Korean firm, but then why would he need to save her? She must have snuck in somewhere she shouldn't be.

The saddest thing is, I think they'll part ways in the end, like in The Bodyguard...

2

reply

Required fields are marked *

Fyi: she will paraglide over the DMZ. She will not be in a plane crash.

Maybe she does have a business in North Korea. But it doesn't justify her trespassing a country's airspace, be it intentional or not intentional. So...she will really need Hyunbin to protect and smuggle her out of the country. And then Hyunbin will go to SK with her and becomes a NK defector.

I say they'll be in NK for maybe 2 episodes before they get to SK, Hyun Bin in tow. Then the drama will shift to Hyun Bin navigating his ways in modern SK. Wait..I think this sounds familiar. Hahaha

3. Hyun bin, bathing in a murky stream, without a stitch on, choco abs glistening in the sun

4.Hyun bin, bathing in a waterfall, without a stitch on, choco abs ( and more) glistening in the sun

As much as I like the premise of a cheesy bodyguard storyline and a new drama featuring a North/South Korea romance, the set-up for this is just ridiculous. It's an international crisis if a plane flies too close to the DMZ, let alone in it, so there is no way in hell someone can accidentally cross the border paragliding. They've got radars tracking that airspace 24/7 over there. This is definitely going to be a "turn off your brain and enjoy the pretty" kind of drama.

Thanks for the casting news, @tipsymocha. AsianWiki lists the drama as LOVE'S EMERGENCY LANDING, which I'll take any day over a crash landing. It sounds too much like "crash and burn," which is what too many dramas do without having a title that actively conjures it up. Not only is the description giving me flashbacks to THE KING 2HEARTS. It also reminds me of the film JOINT SECURITY AREA (2000), perhaps with a touch of WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL, or HEAVEN'S SOLDIERS owing to the cross-border collaboration. On the other hand, I cannot image how anyone could enter that airspace without ending up like Swiss cheese, so my disbelief is already requiring suspension.

Sohn Ye-jin has been one of my favorite actresses since first seeing her in a dual role in THE CLASSIC with Cho Seung-woo and Zo In-sung. The OST is beautiful. She lost her memory in A MOMENT TO REMEMBER, and a philandering husband in APRIL SNOW. SYJ played a merchant in GREAT AMBITION with Jang Hyuk, and a bereaved mother in the memorable ALONE IN LOVE with Kam Woo-sung. She was Lee Min-ho's landlady in PERSONAL TASTE. Oh, and she swashed many a buckle in THE PIRATES. "Versatile" is an understatement.

As for Hyun Bin, I've only seen him in the drama MY NAME IS KIM SAM-SOON, and a couple of clips from SECRET GARDEN. I recently caught him in the sageuk film THE FATAL ENCOUNTER with Jo Jung-seok.

when she was rumored to be dating Kim nam gil, they work in two back to back projects together "Shark" and "The Pirates". but nothing was confirmed only denied. even tough KNG seemed pretty much into her. so i guess Son Ye jin likes to works with the same co-star and they like her.

plus, KNG is much more low profile than HB and SYJ who are starpower. he (KNG) could have beneficited if the relas.. got public. rather they denied.
I guess i prefer KNG than HB who overshadow his co-star. that's why i'm not even excited about this project. i hope SYJ gets a really good role.
