Kim Ok-bin dreams of bringing a city to its knees in tvN’s Arthdal Chronicles

Yay, finally, some focus on the women in this drama! I’ve been eager to see what kind of roles we should expect from Kim Ok-bin (Children of a Lesser God) and Kim Ji-won (Fight My Way), so I’m excited that tvN’s Arthdal Chronicles has released a teaser that centers around one of them. Kim Ok-bin will be playing an ambitious player in the struggle to rule Arthdal, and I can’t wait to see her hold her own against Song Joong-ki (Descended From the Sun) and Jang Dong-gun (Suits).

In the teaser, Kim Ok-bin makes her way through a flower-covered path and comes face to face with Jang Dong-gun. A voice offscreen tells her that he is “the star” and “will be king,” though that doesn’t seem like a future she wants to accept. She whips a dagger close to his neck as she declares that what “the king has is me,” as if that’s the reason he will ascend to the throne. She’s no friend of Song Joong-ki’s character either, though, as we see him hold her with a knife to her throat.

She muses to someone offscreen that “no matter how skilled he is, I can catch him. Because I am not one to stop when there is something left to try.” Her character is the daughter of a sea captain, and that status probably lends her some political capital, though this father-daughter relationship doesn’t seem too warm and fuzzy, as we see him slap her to the ground at one point. We see brief shots of her taking off her white robes, watching as soldiers drag Kim Ji-won, laughing while covered in blood, and angrily crying, while she tells us that her goal is “to have Arthdal at my feet.”

I’m not sure whether Kim Ok-bin will be playing a straight villain in this show, but I’m not sure I care too much because she’s so good at playing darker characters. I’m also excited to see that she’s going to hold her own amongst all the powerful men in the show, and I can’t wait to watch her machinations unfold.

Arthdal Chronicles will premiere its first of three parts on June 1 in tvN’s Saturday-Sunday slot.

I think she's the only one out of the leads I want to vouch for. No wonder Kim Ok-vin was cast.

This might end up like QSD where Mishil stole the show.

This poster is so awful... I'm not convinced by racoon Song Joong Ki.

The story reminds me 10,000 BC movie. A young man tried to save his girl friend who was kidnapped by more "advanced" tribe. Not a good movie...

Judging by all this teasers, this drama will end as "splendiferous crash" for sure. And I will watch it.

The poster kinda remind me of the hobbit’s poster, which is i think not very compatible with the theme of the show that has fantasy vibe but with darker tone. The poster just to bright. Anyway, because this one is from the writer of six flying dragon, i cant help but to watch.

What an ugly poster. I'm suspicious the designer is still confused about the plot so he/she just put every characters on the poster and call it a day.

I just want to know why this poster looks like cheap photoshop when they have this massive budget. They haven't even been paying their crew properly the least they can do is make better posters.

Kim Ok-bin (THE VILLAINESS, YOONA'S STREET etc) ...sold!!! For the first time I actually like the trailer.
Kim Eui-sung has been playing too many villain roles but I never get tired of hating on his characters for some reason lol.

The artwork and plot descriptions (check Wikipedia) look horrible. But I'll check it out using some of the free time I'll have from trying to boycott robots & face-blindness.

Are there such thing as "costume blindness" and "make-up blindness"? Asking for a friend.

I think you are currently suffering from having the wrong chromosome to fully appreciate the beauty of Robots and Bosses with Face Blindness 😂😂😂

The poster reminds if the Chronicles of Narnia, but Joon-ki would be a lion—maybe that’s what they were trying to go for with the shaggy hair! The teaser looks compelling enough. I will watch it because it’s easily accessible. My love-hate relationship with Netflix continues.

If they have an OST as epic as Chronicles of Narnia's one like Arrival at Aslan's How, it would be great !

I'll watch, it will either be spectacular or ridiculous. Either way I'll be entertained, so I am in.

Currently I'm leaning towards ridiculous especially with all the part 1 , 2 , 3 fiasco. On another note whoever made the poster clearly has no clue what the plot is so they just crammed in every character they could find.

I'm with you. I was not terribly interested in the first place, but the more teasers they throw out, the more ridiculous it looks to me. And seriously, who is overseeing the visual design for this drama? They are not doing a great job.

This sure gives me C drama vibes(and i've come to adore wuxia dramas so much because of female focus and fantasy)so maybe i'm the minority that actually adores SJK's style, hair and paining all over and hope he keeps it a lot!
I really hope the story will deliver in the fantasy departament and with the grey characters and giving us complex heroines as we all know that with some exceptions SK adores hero themes dramas(unlike China that has much more heroine theme dramas)

The thing with the costumes in Chinese period or wuxia dramas is that while they are not historically-accurate with the era they portray, they are pretty at least. However, in Arthdal, I didn't get the impression, except for Kim Ok-vin's.
But then again, Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy was a visual feast, but it lacked in the writing department.

Those Chinese period drama's I've seen did have very beautiful costumes, they aren't so 'westernized' as Arthdal's.

Spot on with regards to Tribes and Empires - I was blown by the cinematography and world building but the story was a mess.

Yup yup yup. Chinese wuxia dramas have this weird, unexplainable quirk of having gorgeous costumes, gorgeous setbacks and cinematography, but lame, cheap posters even in this decade. Usually posters are your foray to get a rough gist about how capable the drama's aesthetics team is, but I almost never can get it right with C-dramas.
K-dramas usually have mastered the art of posters, and more often than not the drama lives up to the expectations given by posters, at LEAST aesthetic-wise. Which is why I'm confused with the crappy poster.
If ARTHDAL is anything like wuxia, it'd at least have a decent plot and settings despite the poster. Let's hope! The crew and writers deserve more than a chance!

The poster is like Six Flying Dragons except they took away the boxes, and with it, the clarity, dressed all the actors up in clothing from European medieval times for that truly accurate historical representation, and then added an excess of characters and floral design.

Don't forget the curly/wavy hair for extra measure. Just to remind us these are 'feral' 'prehistoric' characters.

Hmm...don't get the complaints about the poster. Reminds me of every Star Wars poster. I think this is an adventure epic with a lot of characters and they want to show that by emulating a very popular poster style for that genre. My only complaint is that the composition is a bit off center. I really want to fix it.

Other than that, I'm really interested in this one!

Kim Ok Vin rocked her role back when she was starring in Yoona's street. In the past, I would have said I'm watching it for SJK but for this drama, I'm gonna say I'm watching it for Kim Ok Vin! She is so badass!
