Happy Friday Beanies!

Arthdal Chronicles airs tomorrow, I don't know why I am excited. Everything I've seen of it so far tells me it's going to be wreck but everything on paper says otherwise. Whatever it is, just don't be boring. Even if it's terrible, we can have shitposts and rabbit watch. My prediction - Disney scale of epicness!

Still going to trust the PD. Even if the graphics, dresses or setting might disappoint, I think he could still make the show worthwhile.

PD should control supervise the wardrobe too. So I’m really puzzled.

Hopefully the duo writers did their job right.

I honestly don't know how to feel about it. I think your excitement but caution is a good mix going into it. It levels your expectations and in this way I always find it easier to adjust expectations so a drama, whether epic or just passable, can be enjoyed.

But SJK's so cute he'd make it work somehow. Just distract the viewers by acting cute. I was unmoved by DoTs, but when he picked up that scarf, boy, did my heart flutter, and I'm not even a fan. I think he'll make it work cause he's just so popular.

I imagine at this stage of the game for SJK (married, older and wiser) he doesn't really want to be thought of as "cute". Poor guy. Just accept that you'll always, no matter how much you work out, be the epitome of cuteness.

Seconded. I have a soft spot in my heart for noble failures so i'll be prepared for it and kindhearted if it's really trying. I still have a guilty pleasure thinking about Blade and Petal. So, bring on the chronicles.

Ha, ha! "Disney scale of epicness"...so is that a good or a bad thing (because personally, I don't like anything Disney.)
It will be either:
1) Awesome!
2) LOL because it looks so ridiculous
3) Eye roll worthiness

Happy Friday Beanies!

I'm watching My Husband, Mr Oh on Netflix. I watched the first 4 or so episodes on Viki when it initially aired and decided to pick it up again.

The Netflix subber has decided to subtitle some of Eric's random English words, but not some others (Viki subbers translated all of it, to get to 100% subs I guess). For reasons that I can't quite put my finger on, this makes it even funnier. I can imagine the person doing the subtitles listening to Eric talk, and think: nope, the English-speaking audience won't understand this; or, yeah, they'll get that.

It's ridiculously hilarious. Ya know what I'm sayin'?

@cloggie @dramafan12 Speaking of spoken English (heh!) I was pleasantly surprised by Choi Sung Won (Nam Bo Won) in Absolute Boyfriend.

He spoke great English. His accent was not too strong, and perfectly understandable. Usually a k-actor will be given very little to say in English ... just a phrase or a 'Yes' and 'Thank you', but he had some 6+ short phrases with more than those usual words to speak.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but perhaps don't be too sorry. As the show goes on, it becomes more about the glorious tradition of the gayageum than the contract relationship. I got pretty bored by the end of it...

I am incapable of fast-forwarding except for 5-minute wailing scenes, sigh. But yes, the husband helped a lot :-p , and Eric was funny too. It's just another case of what could have been...

2

I was watching it while it aired and really loving it, but I got to a point where I was struggling to go back, and then without really trying to, I just stopped watching. I still want to finish it, but some story choices were made that really frustrated me. (Unnecessary separatiooooooooooons.)

Required fields are marked *

I liked the beginning, but I hated the tropes surrounding the second female lead, and the epic of gayageum making was rather lost on me. When the romance became secondary to non-existent, I just couldn't wait for it to be over...

2

I didn't mind the gayageum stuff. Some of it was actually kind of interesting to me, but it eventually becomes a reason for the two to be separated, and the separation just makes no sense. I wanted them to be a little more mature about the whole thing.

Happy weekend Beanies!

I am currently packing for a sleepover weekend at my best friend's place. Since she lives near the border we're leaving the country tomorrow to visit a foreign city that can only be reached by K-pop carpool karaoke, and only be left after looting all the local asian shops and restaurants ;) Other activities include K-drama watching and catching up :)

As much as I look forward to this, I look even more forward to the next weekend, because then I can finally sleep and watch K-drama's in bed! :D

Good to know that you've got nice plans for the weekend, but I know what you mean. It's actually wonderful to have a long stretch of just 'me' time and fun stuff to do by oneself, like watching dramas and commenting about them! 😝 This weekend is more or less like that for me ... but I'm binging on currently airing shows so I may run out of shows to watch for the weekend!!!

I was a bit confused the past few weeks about feeling not too well, but at the same time not really facing anything that challenging...it turns out that lacking sleep and K-drama time crumbles my resistance. Nobody would question the need for sleep, but needing alone time is still not accepted everywhere, alas ;)

I am really looking forward to not leaving home (except for exercising and one dinner with a friend) next week! I spent a fortnight in May catching up with various friends and while I enjoy their company, the lack of alone time and being at home made me quite grumpy.

All it took was one afternoon alone at home, cleaning my desk and notes from university, and suddenly I was a hospitable human again ^^;

Happy weekend, beanies!
All the dramas I want to watch, or that I have started to watch are on Wednesdays!!! (Except for the secret life of my Secretary) Which means: I am behind, but not only because of the Wednesday-thing, but also because of real life.

I have had my father in the hospital while visiting me where I live, and his travel insurance doesn't work, and we are left with couple thousand Euro debt that we simply don't know how to pay. My dad needs a surgery back where he lives (basically a country where you can barely find food), and life is complicated.

I know you guys could simply pray for me and tell me kind words, and I fully appreciate them. Those who have good health, appreciate it as well, and if possible, don't stay awake late if it's not necessary. I know binge watching is a huge temptation, but take care of your parasympathetic system, LOL.

Life carries on 😍

Their should be a patient billing representative or patient services that may have more resources. Life is complicated so take care if yourself too!

Definitely in France your brother could trough his assurance maladie card have him treated if it's emergency. They have good social system for foreigners as well so he could manage to have his surgery in France I think. I hope it will work for you. Does he need a visa to visit you?

Schengen visa, and my brother got him also a schengen visa travel insurance, but they argue what he had being with me (in Germany) is a known illness and/or a consequence of a known illness (which is true), but we couldn't have known he would be this bad in recent diagnosis.
My brother is still fighting with the travel insurance... having him operated in France, I am not sure it will be possible for my dad is a tourist there as well.
Right now we both are riding the bus through swiss territory, in order to come back to France, first of all.

Thanks a lot for all the greetings and comfort. I love you, guys!! 😍

I think it is still possible to do. Even if the illness is known when the condition worsen you have to use emergency. I would try it and I would trust french doctors. They're not perfect but at least not corrupted like in my country. It's different to Germany though, let him check on some forums I think he would get lots of advices.

So I was dreaming and then I woke up with this idea. In France when you upgrade your MasterCard to golden one - you pay more every month but when traveling a lot it's worth it because you have travel insurance included in it, you can pay medical expenses outside your country for your close relatives as well. It can pay you plane tickets to go home from other country if something bad unexpected happened and you have to rebook your ticket if you payed it before with it. When you rent a car and something happens to it it can be paid fully by your golden card insurance. You have to have it for at least 2months or less. So next time tell your brother to think about to get it because your father's hospital bills could be payed this way... That's just an idea.

I have so many dramas piled up I'm a little overwhelmed.

K dramas I want to try Arthdal Chronicles, One Spring Night (Netflix?), Absolute Boyfriend, and Angel's Last Mission. Oh, and My First Love.
And continue with Secret Life of My Secretary.

C dramas I want to try Le Coup de Foudre and Suddenly this Summer. Then continue with Minglan.

Japanese dramas I want to try are I Hear You and Tokyo Bandwagon.

I just need to take a deep breath and pick 2 or 3, lol.

Anyway, I really like it, and if you also then like it, I recommend another jdrama with similar theme: Biblia Koshodo no Jiken Techo, I really like this one too.
sidenote: I found that NHK Premium program or its Sunday night drama often has a heartwarming story but maybe you already know that hehe..I just felt that many drama from this program/chanel resonates well with me so I always try to keep up with ones from their Sunday night program, and I would say that many that I like rather than ones that I don't.
Have a great weekend, enjoy your drama watching!

This year, because I wanted someone to fangirl with irl, my sister and I started a drama viewing trade-off.

Over the years we've recommended dramas to each other and never gotten around to it. Finally with this trade-off, I give her a drama to watch and she gives me one. To ensure progress, we get together each week to hang out and watch our given dramas and/or discuss. The get-togethers are fun (we also eat a lot) and we are on our 3rd round of trade-offs. But. I AM SUFFERING from her drama choices. She knows. Rant ensues.

6
11
reply

Required fields are marked *

Round one
- My drama for her: Just Between Lovers
- Her drama for me: Well Intended Love

Do I need to say more? I tried to get on the main ship but the drama got worse and worse until watching to the end was so hard. Not only the characters, the whole production, writing, editing, music- everything was lacking.

Round two
- My drama for her: Wok of Love
- Her drama for me: Chaotic Love

I dipped below the bar to give her WOL because at least the OTP, bromance, and food was worth it. If WIL seemed bad, and while WOL isn't a spectacle either, Chaotic Love achieved a new bad record. It's a lakorn and I grew up watching lakorns so I can get over some stuff and messiness (lakorns are super makjang with flawed characters and I'm used to it), but this one. Everyone. Is. Just. So. Dumb. I hated every character except the villain because I wanted him to ruin them all.

Round three
- My drama for my sister: Weightlifting Fairy
- My sister's drama for me: Just You

An eye for an eye? My sister can't stand Bok Joo and how she sulks with her protruding lips. I just can't deal with the female lead in Just You. I am so over rude, obnoxious, childish female leads that are supposed to come off as sweet, cute, and endearing, and will melt the hearts of stoney male leads. I cannot stand this actress's voice. No nuances or inflections at all. Why do you only speak at one volume?! I adore the OSTs but I think I must watch this drama on mute.

Anyway, we're going to take a long break after this 3rd round. We have discussed trading-off animes as well, so maybe a 4th round will be easier for me.

Overall, she enjoyed them, but isn't in love and can move on quickly. But the OSTs have made her playlist, so that's something exciting.

Round 1 & 2, she shared a lot of screenshots of moments and quotes from JBL on our messenger. JBL is just so full of great lines and squee moments. WOL she was so frustrated with female lead's mother and the kitchen crew that she threatened to quit watching sometimes and needed extra sympathy from me. WFKBJ we just started and she isn't into it at all, but laments that NJH is very cute but too young for her tastes. Revelation that NJH is actually her husband's age (her husband is younger than her) so she's more into it now, although thinks he has a baby face.

Lol. It is interesting and takes discussions beyond just agreeing with each other, and thankfully we have enough different dramas to try. This is probably the only thing that makes this trade off worth it, that my sister and my likes are similar but with enough differences to push us into watching dramas that we could've ignored. I actually enjoyed WOL as well, perhaps (shocking) more than I did JBL on my first watch of each. Am rewatching WFKBJ right now with my sister for this round, so my strong feelings on it might change a bit.

Also, yea, save yourself and don't watch any of those dramas my sister has given to me. Not worth wasting time or brain cells.

The Viki subbing situation has begun to effect my drama priorities and I currently hate it. Not blaming the volunteers here, of course they will sub their bias first, but I just end up watching my least interested dramas every week until I have time to deal with overseas alternative that calls for vpn. I’m still waiting for My Fellow Citizens finale to get subbed. I still didn’t see that jaw dropping end to Angel’s Mission. And although HPL had started to bore me long time ago, I finished it because PMY fans sub like lightning.

I only watch through apps or tv. I can’t stand subpar stream qualities. So Viki and Netflix is always were I start. But US Netflix has nothing but their originals. So although I’m not loving Abyss, it gets watched. Luckily it’s kinda unpredictable and atypical so I don’t find it boring.

Now I want Netflix to invest in everything, cuz it’s the best streaming service. Viki, when my annual subscription ends, I’m dropping plus.

(Never going to watch on illegal sites so don’t bother suggesting alternatives. Just let me rant.)

MFC and Angel has substantially popular idols leading, so I'm surprised. Interesting, subs aren't the deal breaker for me. I have both Viki and Netflix, but upon learning that some OSTs get replaced on Netflix because of rights (don't know about Viki) I have decided I won't watch on Netflix. OSTs are too important for me. Sad there isn't a perfect service that has everything.

Sadly Viki does it too. I noticed it when looking for a specific song played in Boys Over Flowers Ji suns 'What Do I Do' was replaced by some generic song. It's like discovering a book you like has been abridged, because then you wonder what you've been missing .

1

@katrina I'm sad but glad you told me. In this case, ignorance isn't bliss. Thanks.

2

Yea, it’s the same for any platform outside Korea now. Viki used to use raw format videos but ever since Viu came along in SEA and channels started reformatting all videos for overseas streaming services, they all uniformly receive the streaming version, which is different from the broadcasted version. So there’s not much difference between Viki and Netflix anymore. Netflix used to cut out ppl scenes but they now put a disclaimer on the screen rather then edit their version.

1

Finals month also doesn’t help. Angel is moving along, when it gets started it does reach 90% quickly. MFC can stay at 0% for a week or longer 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have partially solved the problem by getting Kocowa. Extra $ but you can drop Viki down to basic. It’s rare for Kocowa to delay full releases including subs for more than a few hours after airing in Korea.

I can’t play Kocowa on my tv using chromecast ever since they started using Roku. And my Viki plus subscription is still 5 months to go. So I’m not paying Kocowa double.

I'm so surprised that MFC final episodes (eps 34,35 & 36) are still pretty much on 0% subbed. It's one of the ones where I have to stay away from the recap (and the Fan Wall) not to get spoilered.

Hi Everyone and Happy OT! Thanks @mary!

I'm busy and going to be busier but I picked up shows and liked them enough to want to continue to watch most of them ... oh dear... now I'm in trouble. 😬

The Wind Blows - Serious and not too happy a show. Kam Woo Sung's character is a selfish jerk but although show does not make it clear, it could be because he already knows he's got Alzheimer's and is planning the break up. Poor wife. Funny part (I hope it's funny) will be wife trying to look like someone else with stage makeup and to seduce her own husband, so that she gets grounds for divorce, because he's technically unfaithful!!! This I've got to see.

Absolute Boyfriend - Still have yet to watch Ep 6, Having a robot flirting with one is one thing, but having him behaving as an 'official' BF is too cheesy for me. Ma Wang Joon ma have had reasons to break up but he could have done so in a more considerate way. Stil I hope he becomes a better person and goes all out to woo Da Da and get her back!!!

Angel's Last Mission: Love - I like that Dan is totally sincere about bringing romance with what he thinks is a human guy, into Yeon Seo's life. And although YS thinks that she hopes Dan won't fall for her, it looks like the tables have turned on her.

One Spring Night - Slow burn of 2 love sick characters and all the obstacles in their path. So far, it's better than Pretty Noona, but the similarities between these 2 shows are astounding. Still at least in this show, there are some family members who can be depended upon , and the ill-fated fiance is not unlikable.

Completed:
How to Hate You - Youth campus romance. Light on content but short enough (6 short episodes) so that it does not matter. Girls' friendship is something else. Female Lead figuring out that finding one's ideal type does not equal finding love was satisfactory.

Le Coup De Foudre - Great as a coming of age and slice of life show. The adult version of How to Hate You. Has enough nuance to not be too boring or tropey. Some parts are a bit simplistic but I'm told it has to meet the requirements of being easy to understand for all ages. At least the Female Lead was allowed to do stuff, take initiative and grow out of being someone who lacked confidence in the beginning. The conversations were also not bad where the OTP when they got together properly, had good communication. Great to see the characters grow to become reasonable and realistic adults.

I don't think I can watch a show like The Wind Blows unless they make it funny but I can't see how.

Angel's Last Mission - I am loving L and Shin Hye Sun's chemistry. I wasn't expecting it they are just so cute together.

Absolute Boyfriend - I am now convinced robot romance isn't for me. I did ask myself though - if Zero Nine is human, would I root for him?

I only intended to see how The Wind Blows looked for starters. I may still drop it if guy's being a jerk does not reduce a great deal. Since the synopsis gives us info, we know roughly what's going to happen, so it's just a matter of finding out how things happen. I know however that Kam Woo Sung can be real swoony when he piles on the charm, in his understated way. It may be worth it to see how he woos his wife.

Yes, L and Shin Hye Sun are great together. I actually love their bickering and how he gives as good as he gets and tells her the truths she needs to hear.

Young Gu/09/Zero Nine if he turned his charms on me would turn me off. Just too much, and he's around the girl so much it's suffocating. Having a person around who keeps giving is also quite a burden to the receiver. I can watch the show, but I don't want to be in Da Da's shoes, and I still root for the flawed human boyfriend.

Last week I wrote about how unlikable Yeon Seo is but at least the show is not making excuses for her behavior. You are right that she needs Dan to put her in her place.

Zero Nine is good company for Da Da only for a while. He gives her constant attention, love and care which Ma Wang Joon wasn't able to. At her lowest, he does serve the purpose of a comforter. However, it's not a permanent solution. When there is no free will, there is no true love.

I think that's why I could enjoy the romance in Are You Human Too? His feelings (?) Or interest or whatever developed gradually, love wasnt built in, he was designed to comfort when he saw specific signs of distress like tears. But romance wasn't in the design like in Zero-9, I like Absolute Boyfriend but I can see me dropping it without to much regret.

3

Which is why I hesitate to get emotionally involved with the show. Zero Nine is so earnest that it’s hard for me to avoid rooting for him, begging the question of how much of it is programming and how much is independent reasoning on his part. Which begs deeper questions and most KDramas just won’t try to work through those issues, which is lazy. Either the other lead ends up with a human or if they end up with the robot, it’s all based on having a “feel-good” ending. And I know how the Japanese version resolves things.

I can't imagine a kdrama with it's current light vibe ending in any other way than 'feel-good', but that does not mean that the robot gets the girl. More likely that the human couple adopt him or he finds a better end than in Diana's hands!

I haven’t seen the other versions but I’m gonna go in thinking Zero 9 will eventually play Cupid. Hope I’m right and don’t get too disappointed.

@geliguolu SPH_7
Yes, that would be great ... I'd like to think that 09 becomes more 'human', ie human enough to figure out that the happiness of the other party is more important than doing the things programmed into being a protective or jealous boyfriend. Then knowing Da Da would be happier with Wang Joon, he'd work to bring them together.

0

he'll probably get the girl...robot or not.but hoping he doesn't

In football, the games are different but the rules are the same. I feel One Spring Night is closely following the Pretty Noona playbook. The female lead is self-loathing in her long term but loveless relationship but cannot find the strength to end it (a sign of bad decision making). The male lead is being selfish in trying to quickly turn their friendship into a romantic relationship knowing that she is seeing someone else.

I know the show tried to explain why Hae In is NOT living with his son, but I don't buy that premise. It shows a level of immaturity not to take full responsibility for your child (which may or may not be used as his character's flaw just as in Noona.)

I wanted to see Le Coup De Foudre since it sounded really good and heard it was good, until I saw who the main actress was (Janice Wu). I have tried 2 dramas with her, My Amazing Boyfriend and An Oriental Odyssey, and had to drop both because I just couldn't stand her. She was a terrible and annoying actress in both of them which was disappointing as both seemed like they could be good, but I just couldn't.

So my question is. How does she do in this drama? I may still give it a go and hope she has improved from those other dramas.

Required fields are marked *

This is my first time watching Janice Wu, so I cannot compare with her past performances. Since she did not bother me, I will also have a different starting point in judging. I felt that the character had to be both someone lacking in self esteem and yet ultimately able to forge connections with difficult people. This she did with stubborn staying power and gentle diplomacy. I felt that the actress carried this out well enough.

She was a bit whimsical in her interactions with husband, and because he was always besotted with her, even in his cut and dried way, he uncharacteristically played along. So the couple together was pretty good too.

With certain actors, it can be difficult. If we don't like them, then no matter what, it will be hard to watch them. I feel that way about one or two actors, who are actually pretty good actors ... but ... 🙄

Ya there are some actors that for whatever reason I just don't like. Even some who are good actors. And Janice Wu is definitely one of those actors. But I never write off dramas because of actors alone as sometimes actors can surprise you. So I'll still give this a go and hope this is the drama that changes my opinion of her.

Happy Friday Beanies! Hope everyone had a vunderful week and has a wonderful weekend! 😊

Doctor Prisoner 9/10 Excellent drama. Very well written, acted, great cinematography and directing. One huge issue I tend to have with revenge dramas is how frustrating they can be. You usually spend like 15 episodes with the bad guys winning over the good guys just to have the good guys finally win in episode 16. It makes the good guys look incompetent and dumb. But in this drama, it's a true cat and mouse game. Na Yi-Je is incredibly smart and goes equally toe-to-toe against these powerful people. Even if his plans don't always work out he is still able to outsmart those against him to come out ahead. It hasn't been frustrating at all and excited to see how this ultimately ends (I have 1 episodes left). I'm almost embarrassed to admit I love Lee Jae-hwan. He was horrible and over-the-top in the beginning but by the end he is kinda pitiful and adorable. I also love the prosecutor and madam's relationship. It's oddly cute. I've never found Namkoong Min that attractive but I found him super attractive in this drama (I don't know if it's age or his character) and like always he is doing a phenomenal job.

Destiny of White Snake 7.5/10 This was an entertaining cdrama. I've been wanting to see this so was super excited when it finally came to Viki. I loved Yang Zi in Ashes to Love and she did a good job in this, along with her co-star Ren Jialun (who've I've never seen in a drama before). It was quite enjoyable but it did start dragging in the second half and the big issue I had with the drama was a lot of the problems was caused by the main couple. One or the other would do something to save or protect the other which would usually result in a disaster. Even when they were told not to do these actions, they would still do them which would even cause the death of innocents. This was a running theme through the whole drama. I also didn't like that Xu Xuan kept disregarding Bai Yao Yao's wants and desires to make his own decisions that he thought was best for her. I did really like the 4 main characters and all the actors did a great job. I really liked the sisterhood between Yao Yao and Xiao Qing and the brotherhood between Qi Xiao and Xu Xuan. I just got a little annoyed with how persistent Xiao Qing was towards Qi Xiao and how she didn't understand that no meant no. I also really liked the Demon Emperor. He was more then just a bad guy and had a tragic life and story. The drama did have its issues but I did enjoy it for the most part and would suggest to those who like fantasy cdramas.

I just finished the drama and it was phenomenal and had a satisfying ending (except my only complaint is I don't think 1 of the bad guys was really redeemed in the end and wish he was also brought to justice).

All the actors were amazing in it. Namgoong Min and Choi Won-Young always do excellent jobs and I think these were some of their best roles yet. But I was also blown away by Park Eun-Seok. I don't know who he is but I hope to see him in other dramas.

Hi @trinpie. I really enjoyed DOCTOR PRISONER also. I agree with you about the performance of Park Eun-Seok. I was surprised to learn that he is 35 years old. Then again I probably shouldn’t be. His DP character Jae-hwan had an interesting arc. His character was used to lighten things up occasionally which is necessary in a heavy drama like DP. His voice is on the high pitch side in contrast to Namgoong Min’s deep voice.

Question: occasionally I am asked for recommendations by friends and acquaintances who are unfamiliar with kdramas. Many of them are sci-fi and fantasy fans and one of the first shows I would recommend is Goblin, which seems to stuck in licensing purgatory in the US (if not, surely Netflix or Viki would pick it up...right? This is one of those little things that has gotten on my nerves). With that show unavailable as a choice, what are some others you’d regret recommend to them? Since they’re all likely Netflix subscribers, it would be preferred over Viki (if on Viki, one that is available for free viewing), and since sometimes the person asking is a guy, at least some of the recs need to appeal to them.

Goblin is not available in Netflix US? It's the most popular kdramas in recent years so I thought it's available everywhere. So far Circle is the best kdrama sci-fi, although I'm not really satisfied with the ending. Duel is also good, it reminds of Orphan Black. That's all kdrama sci-fi I remember.

Hi, beanies. Another Friday, meow!

So I posted my two new chapters over at this link, because the other link at AsianFanfics is giving me some problems. I'll update, once the old link is okay. In the meantime, you can read the two new chapters here.

Chapter 24 : I Never Loved Her
Chapter 25: Secrets

So I was over at Soompi this morning, and I read somd exciting news about Joo Ji hoon and Song Hye kyo. I was so excited, because it's Joo Ji hoon, who was stuck in that awful, trainwreck of a show, Item. The worst drama I've seen ever. Awful. Awful. Awful. I hope he'll be redeemed in the new drama. I think the pairing is absolutely perfect, and it'll generate some much-needed buzz for poor JJH.

I dropped so many shows this week. I couldn't find the energy to go on any longer. My enthusiasm just wiltered away, slowly, with each new episode. My Private Life, Abyss, I'm talking about you, yeah.

Looking forward with baited breath and thumping heart to Perfume. I find the trailers so hilarious...SSR is so funny with those odd faces he pulls...I love him to bits, mwah ♥️♥️♥️♥️

Hello all:

Finally sorta kinda getting over that dreaded flu/cold/bronchitis. Still need some rest but gotta find that new place to live.

Kdramas;

My Fellow Citizens -- gotta catch up
The Secret Life of My Secretary -- I wish they would stop stalling her confession. I know this is kdrama basics but i find it all very manipulative to have them continually interrupt truthtelling.
Abyss -- My current crack dama
One Spring Night -- This better end happily. Not liking bullying dentist nor conservative old dad, nor money-grubbing business old dad.
My Absolute Boyfriend -- okay, it isn't doing much for me.
Her Private Life -- might watch, not really feeling it. But then again, this wasn't a drama that tried to be a page-turner. Sheesh, some dramas overdo the page-turnery and some underdo it. I like a drama that's in the zone. Not boring slice of life and not overplotted manipulative. Is that too much to ask?
Different Dreams --Wasn't feeling this. I do love our second lead but the drama was full of nothing happening so i dropped it.
Nokdu Flower -- i wanna watch this but i fear the tragic ending. i should force myself, right?
Voice 3 -- The feralness of the bad guys is a bit too much.
Arthdal Chronicles -- Anticipating this with much joy and apprehension.

Cdramas:
My True Friend - fun in its meandering slice-of-life way
Gotta catch up on Listening Snow Tower and Princess Silver.
Gotta start all those stories with Legend in the title.

On Netflix:

Love Storm was recommended to me by someone on kdramaddicts on facebook and i watched. So much fun. I generally don't watch Hong Kong dramas but this might be a new beginning.
Be My Maybe, a good rom-com on Netflix, reminiscient of a few kdramas. It's set in SF Chinatown, and a fun watch.

Not much else. Still house or apartment hunting.
Have a great weekend, all.

Good Friday!
I am a new KDrama fan (two years in) so catching up on all the “classics” while trying to keep up with current dramas.
Finished Healer. And Oh. My. God. What a great show!! I love Kim Jae-Wook, but the romance/story between Park Min-young and Ji Chang-Wook was amazing and so on point.

Absolute Boyfriend - I was into it, but now kinda bored. I thought Ma Wang-jun wanted to break up with Da Da before the award show and before the box showed up. I am confused...
Angels Last Mission - I am an episode behind, but really like it! It’s moves at a nice pace and introduces characters in an interesting way, aka the new Artistic Director. Working in theatre I loved the scene where he takes over the rehearsal.
Her Private Life - oy. I was obsessed with this show and KJW. Obsessed. But the last four episodes lost the fun and charm and started to get too much. I was cool with everything up until the dead brother. What. There needed to be more foreshadowing to that, like the mom and dad trying to hide it or something at the beginning. Or maybe I missed it? Episode 15 was by far the worst, so choppy and didn’t flow like it used to. But I LOVED that Deok-mi got the job offer in NYC and Ryan had to follow her and that she was the new Vice Director. Yay Girl Power!!! I do love how this drama was so mature and forward thinking, bravo!

Happy weekend, fellow beanies!
I just watched 4 episodes (or 8?)of One Spring Night this week.
The drama looks promising in the start, and hopefully they’ll stick to this level til the end.
The OSTs are kind of distracting, if I have to point out something. It’s like it is arranged by an overly enthusiastic music lover
trying to portray the show’s ambience with the music. But, for me, it became too lame sometimes by attempting to show that the music is different from others. duh.
Other than that, I’m okay with the show.
Waiting for next week for new episodes.

Yes, me too. I never understood why this Director uses music in this very "in-your-face" way. Music should set the mood and promote an idea, and not come on like a wet bedsheet flapping in the wind and hitting us with a wallop. Even if the lyrics are suitable, it comes on too strong or loudly.

I contrast this with the music in Angel's Last Mission and the music is also obviously a repeated song, but it does not jar and is appropriate for the moments.

I would recommend Angel's more than Absolute Boyfriend.

Angel's has more substance behind it's themes. It's not just a matter of whether it's love if it's a programmed thing like in Absolute Boyfriend, but thoughts on choosing how life is to be: is it run (like a ballet academy) or lived. Choosing being selfish or generous, being closed off or open, etc, etc.

If you had the time and could choose, I'd recommend Angel's

Thank you very much! I'll give Angel's a look as soon as possible.

TGIF! Hope many beanies were able to enjoy the long weekend! (Why it seems long weekend never feels long at all?) Anyway I wanted to check one more interview from casts of Doctor Prisoner- Kim Jung-nan(48) who played sassy Madame Oh. Per Wiki, Kim, as a talent for KBS (14th) in 1991, made her acting debut with KBS drama "Asphalt My Hometown"(1991). She stopped acting and went to school shortly after, but returned to acting in 1996. She also worked as a reporter for a while. Kim garnered some popularity after starring in A Gentleman's Dignity in 2012, receiving the special acting award for her role. Recently she appeared in "Clean with Passion for Now" and then "SKY castle" in 2018 where she played Lee Myung-joo who spent her life to put her child in Seoul University of Medicine, but made a shocking choice after realizing that everything was her illusion. Despite the fact that she appeared in only first episodes, she showed tremendous presence, attracting a lot of viewers.

[Starnews, 2019.05.21-22] In Doctor Prisoner, Kim Jung-nan acted Oh Jung-hee, rich lady and helper for show's hero Namgoong Min, and played a role providing a comma to heavy drama with love-line with prosecutor Jung (Jang Hyun-sung). Here is Q&A session.

Q: You succeeded in gaining popularity from acting Lee Myung-joo in JTBC SKY Castle to KBS Doctor Prisoner's Oh Jung-hee.
Kim: It is not easy to hit two home runs in a year. I think it is all luck. The drama doesn't do well because I am good in it. The drama itself has to be popular, then actors get spotlight. No matter how good the actors are, if the drama does not make an issue, it wouldn't do well. Luckily, the outcome of the project was good so I think I got benefit from it thankfully.

Q: You are called as "actress you watch trusting".
Kim: I am very grateful but I feel burdened. The teachers(senior actors) said, "With acting, the older you get, the harder it gets, and you fall into maze further." When I was young, I didn't know what it meant. Because there were many things I wanted to do, and I had a lot to do in the future, I thought, "It should be easy when career is accumulated, so why they say it is hard?". But as it gets close to thirty years since I acted, now I know what it meant. Because the viewing level of the audience got higher and the content has increased. And since there are so many actors who can act well, even though I feel good when I get a little recognition and praise, I feel pressure. The pressure I must show new performances and shouldn't disappoint people in my next project worries me. So the more I act, the harder it gets.

Q: How did you feel playing a fun character in the show?
Kim: I think people can watch having fun when there is some resting pages in serious genres. Actually I didn't think I could play such a role. I became Jack-of-all-trades not intended. When I first read the script for first and second episodes, I checked carefully because they told me I appeared a lot, but when I first read it, it was undecided whether it was comical character or not. I started in the condition my character was hard to grasp because there was not enough history or information about the character. I worked asking a lot with director-nim and writer-nim. Writer-nim threw a few interesting dialogs. I snapped them up right away and acted, and writer-nim kept going with such emotion. I set my direction that way thinking taking such direction for my character might be fun too. I watched a lot of movies and dramas to show unique and funny character.

Q: There was a love line with prosecutor Jung(Played by Jang Hyun-sung).
Kim: Actually we didn't have any relation, but the image of us greeting happily on the set must be shown interesting. The writer-nim didn't miss it and put that in the script, and it was fun. I threw it on purpose before director-nim "Isn't this becoming a romcom?", but we acted enjoying because the plot flew nicely.

Q: The cheesy dialogs with Prosecutor Jung -Was it ad-lib?
Kim: Almost all were ad-lib. It was 1 setup 1 scene. As for "Squirrel acorn", one day oppa was getting make-up by myside, and his head cover looked like an acorn. When I said it, oppa said my head looked like a squirrel. So we decided to make them our nicknames. It made us cringe while we were saying it, but it was fun. I thought people wouldn't like it when a middle-aged man and woman did something cringing like that, but thankfully there was no negative response.

Q: You weren't surprised to see your image in the first episode?
Kim: Since it was intended, I thought I could come out strongly, but the director-nim wanted to cut shorter than the script. In fact, it was longer in the script, but it was boring so it was edited. People around me said they didn't think it was me, and seeing such response was fun.

Q: How was NamGoong Min you acted together?
Kim: He is greedy actor. It must've been hard leading the drama, but he did very well. As the show continued, he felt difficulties when things didn't work out as he wanted. I worked with him in a weekend drama once when he was a rookie. At that time, he was really a baby, but I found his acting was improved so much when I watched his drama after he returned from military service. I thought that he worked hard at his training in the army. I watched him while we were working together, and thought his eyes were good, and was good at analyzing his character. I think he is a good actor.

Q: Doctor Prisoner ended with an impression of having Season 2.
Kim: If they do Season 2, I really want to join. But in Korea, season 2 has to be good. Because the after-effects of Season 1 are strong, Season 2 can only get favorable reputation when it has completeness. If it doesn't, it might be better not doing it at all, I think. Still, I liked the idea because the material was fresh.

Q: Did you get anything from this work?
Kim: Every piece is experimental to me. I'm always testing with myself. "Would this be ok?" "How would I like to do this, if it were me?" I think the actors also raise the level to match the viewers. Doing this drama I thought, "People watch and enjoy even these characters." I will continue to challenge with the spirit of adventure in the future. Life is a challenge.

Q: Similar works have been hit since SKY Castle.
Kim: It is a good phenomenon. In the past, as people accustomed to a weekend drama or soap opera, the show drags 50 episodes, 100 episodes, and it becomes loose. Then it turns into irritation, which they call makjang, and people get tired of similar material. The acting also becomes flat. Recently good works get created and quality improves as competition increases with the increase of channels, which I think good. And there is an opportunity for actors to try various genres too, so I really like it. There are not many roles that actresses in my age can play. Without this role, I would have played aunt roles. This opportunity comes by luck too. So every time when I have such role, I think "With this opportunity, I really should do well".

Q: After SKY Castle, you met with Choi Won-young and Kim Byung-chul again in this show.
Kim: In my case, casting were done early for SKY castle, but I was only cast after script reading for Doctor Prisoner. I met director-nim and the production team separately. I received a script there and talked a lot. I heard that Byeong-chul ssi and Won-young would appear. I thought "that's good". The main character was played by Namgoong Min, so I thought all it needed was project to come out well. Won-young is a guy with good base. I think that the role of Woo-joo's father in SKY Castle was not the role to stand out, but he portrayed his character well. He may have been a bit disappointed in that project, but I think it was solved through this show.

Q: Do you have plan for next project?
Kim: It isn't my choice. Even if I decide to take a break, I have to do it if there is a project my heart desires. How would I miss it? If a project I feel I have to do is offered tomorrow, I should hold off on having a break.

Q: Do you have the character you want to play?
Kim: If you play the main character, it has the advantage of receiving attention, but the role is limited. However, if you play a supporting role, there is advantage you can play various roles.

Q: Was there a break in the middle in your career?
Kim: I didn't work the year before. I wanted to play a heavy role as the comical role was repeated. I wanted to play a role with sense of depth. I can do well but as I play a cheerful role every time, I thought I could be buried in the character. So I did a show called "Truth Lies". Although live performances were physically and mentally difficult, they relieved my thirst for acting. Before starting the show, I was cast in Sky Castle. As I did both at the same time, I gained back disease and suffered nightmares due to stress.

Q: Recently, you challenged the variety with "Modern Family".
Kim: There is no special reason. As I kept working on projects, I felt I was lacking socially. I wanted to meet people outside of my circle and watch how they live and listen to them. When I am a subject of observation camera, I have to open a lot of myself which is burdensome, so I took MC position. Entertainment was not a field of my expertise, so I didn't feel confident.

Q: You are an actress with 29 years of experience. How did you start acting?
Kim: I was in the second year of college, and I noticed all the seniors took the exam. So I submitted the application like custom. At first I applied for MBC 19th Talent, but failed on 3rd test. Per the advice of my seniors, I took my picture again in a place where they took good pictures and applied for KBS 14th Talent(1991). As my alumni, there are Lee Byung-heon(Mr.Sunshine), Son Hyun-joo(Criminal Minds), and No Hyun-hee ssi.

Q: Do you meet your alumni often?
Kim: We will hold the meeting in June. I have a travel plan but I'll try to fit this in. They had it a few years ago, and more than 20 people came. I met them when I was 20 years old, and now all became ajumma and ajussi. In the case of female alumni, there are many who are cut off from job world as they married early and had children. I don't know what would've happened if I got married too.
