Hi beanies. Just popped in to say that I remember when I posted last year that I'd finished the first half of my clinical exams. Well, today is exactly a week since I passed the second half of my clinical exams. I am now a qualified doctor (well, I will be in two months, after we take our hippocratic oath). I am so relieved. It's been a hard journey with lots of tears and sweat. And now it's all over!!

Hey there Doc!! Congratulations! It must be such a great feeling of accomplishment. Although you say it's all over for the formal part ... it's just the beginning, probably with lots more research to do as you meet with patients. Are you going in as GP or what area are you specialising in?

I don't quite know what I am going to do yet. I have a bit of time to figure it out. We have to work for two years , going through all departments, before we can even apply for a specialty, so I'm hoping I can figure out my way by the end of the two years.

Is anyone here watching
- Designated Survivor: 60 days
- Different Dreams
- ProduceX101
Dramabeans isn't recapping any of these (understandable re PX101) and I'd love to hear your/other viewers' thoughts on them.

@greenfields I didn't watch the original either, so it's all new to me. It is very well done.
My only hurdle is the horrific husband on One Spring Night plays a role here (the NK) so I flinch whenever he appears!

Required fields are marked *

oTL. I have to agree. It looks like he's playing a good guy here, but the feelings of anger from One Spring Night just carry over to this show, every time I see him

2

The scene in the toilets was so funny with the soap sliding in the Ji Jin Hee's sink :D

4

Ah, but he strategically bridged the North-South divide with toilet paper. That's got to count for something. ;-)

1

I watched the first episode of Designated Survivor and plan to keep watching. Ji Jin Hee is such a good actor, I almost felt like I was in the room and partly responsible for what happens next along with him ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Just started Designated Survivor. I want to watch Different Dreams but I'm not up for torture scenes - so how has it been?

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Well, I do fast forward here and there in Different Dreams, but there's no torture scenes as such. It's hinted, you'll see the aftermath - say a beaten and bloody person, but not the beating itself. For the most part. There is a bit here and there. And lots of guns go off.

BUT that being said. It's a pretty good show. I'm not sure why more people aren't watching it.

I watch both dramas, I liked DS:60 days episode better than premiere, it was more even, but frankly had to ff "American" general because the acting was really cringy, and I'm not sure of NIS agents, in comparison with original (I watched just first episode to comapre) too much posturing and shouting.
Different Dreams have nice flow now but Nam Gyuri's character keeps grating on my nerves, I don't understand her purpose and her costumes and behaviour are way too modern for the time period.

Required fields are marked *

I omitted "second" in DS:60 days episode.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I actually found the premier episode perhaps too academic? In some parts, but the second episode - while equally cerebral - was much better somehow. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. Thank god he built some public following just before being thrust into the role of President.

Nam Gyuri is the actress playing the singer? I agree - I think the character is a bit mad - as in, mental, in need of help - to be honest.

2

reply

Required fields are marked *

I like how in second episode they were able to show how nervous but competent he was, there were a lot of good scenes, but they cast a bunch of quality actors and it shows even in weaker scenes.
Yes, she is the singer, I just don't see the point of her character and her wardrobe don't fit which is weird decision on part of stylist comparing it to the rest of the cast.

@greenfields, @beantown, @bbstl, @shach, @ndlessjoie mugyuljoie,

Re: DESIGNATED SURVIVOR.

I commented (late) on the first two episodes in What We're Watching #162 (this past week).

It's off to a smashing start. Mr. P has watched all 3 seasons of the original, but I haven't paid any attention to it. Lee Joon-hyuk initially caught my eye, but Ji Jin-hee really grabbed my attention as he did such a great job as the cranky architect who refused to get hornswoggled into matrimony in HE WHO CAN'T GET MARRIED. I cannot kvell enough over the cast.

I've also seen JJH in the TV movie SNOW LOTUS aka LUCID DREAM, which was very good, as I recall.

Re: Lee Moo-saeng as president's speech writer & defector from DPRK. I couldn't figure out why he looked vaguely familiar. He played traitorous Grand Prince Jinpyung in CROWNED CLOWN.

Speaking of other past villains, Choi Jin-ho hasn't showed up yet. He played the evil hospital chaebol Dr. Do -- father of Yang Se-jong's young surgeon in ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIM. I loathed his character, so he did a great job. He was also in LIFE ON MARS (police chief & doctor) and MR. SUNSHINE (a minister). I bailed out of ITEM before he made an impression.

I'm pacing myself because NOKDU FLOWER is in the homestretch (final two weeks), and I'm not sure how I'm going to survive it. Friday's episode was brutal, and I've only seen it raw.

@bbstl,

ROFLMAO! I have you and @tsutsuloo to thank for introducing me to Ji Jin-hee and his cute backside via HE WHO CAN'T MARRY. Now I wonโ€™t be able to watch Acting President Park Moo-jin without snickering. ;-)

Seriously though, JJH is a great actor. His humorous microexpressions and body language slay me, and then hit me right between the eyes when heโ€™s being serious. Iโ€™m going to have to watch DONG YI one of these days. ;-)

@tsutsuloo set off a lengthy discussion with her statement in paragraph #2:

That prompted @bbstl to spill the beans on the scene in the Kdrama that bared all (see her paragraph #2):

You can take in the view at the โ€œtail endโ€ of episode 1. JJHโ€™s rump returns for a partial encore near the start of episode 2. Uhm Jung-hwaโ€™s order โ€œJo Jae-hee, relax your glutesโ€ is right up there with mandoo maker Kim Young-kwangโ€™s sublimation mantra โ€œI have to knead doughโ€ from MAN LIVING AT OUR HOUSE / SWEET STRANGER AND ME. ;-)

No toreador ever flicked a cape at a charging bull with greater finesse, timing, and control than did Doctor Jang Mun-jeong as she peeled off her patientโ€™s trousers and underwear with a one-two flick of the wrist โ€“ while leaving his socks on. I donโ€™t know how Ji Jin-hee managed to avoid busting a gut while filming that scene. It was ingeniously staged and edited. For the record, I just about died of second-hand mortification.

It truly amazes me that this scene actually aired on TV. Was it intended as some kind of cautionary public service announcement for uncooperative colonoscopy patients? I have no idea.

Thank you, @pakalanapikake. I just took a peak at Jo Ji Hee's astonishing "tail end" and I'm still wiping tears of laughter. His wife is very fortunate.

3

Whoa. I'm amazed at your memory for the names and roles of the actors.

Required fields are marked *

@greenfields,

My memory isn't that great. ;-)

I keep detailed notes and permalinks in my Kdrama log. It's basically one big searchable ASCII flat file. It's home-brew, but does the job. Above all, I have all my own data on my own computer, so I don't have to worry about a website suddenly going poof and taking my records with it. It's simple and very convenient, so I use it everyday.

When I first started watching Kdramas, I didn't keep track of the shows and movies I saw on Hulu, Viki, DramaFever, and YouTube. After a couple of years I opened a Windows Notepad document and typed in as many as I could recall. Then I standardized the format for entries going forward so they would be easy to search. ;-)

I use the log for films and dramas from other parts of Asia: Jdoramas, and Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong productions. It includes my โ€œto-watchโ€ list consisting of many a recommendation from Beanie buddies, DB recaps, ratings, and casting news items โ€“ and announcements in AsianWiki.

Last week I divulged some of my tricks to logging my Kdrama watching โ€“ and telling sageuk ministers apart. It's all @bbstl's and @yyishere YY's fault. ;-)

A proportion of beanies are chained to VIKI and can only watch what's provided. I was looking forward to the Korean version of Designated Survivor (much more than the American version, to be frank) but my hopes were dashed when VIKI didn't stream it.

1
1

Required fields are marked *

Oh no! Hope Viki airs it soon because its well worth it. I haven't seen the American version, but this adaptation is more "Life on Mars" than "Criminal Minds" - meaning that its good. It's been appropriately modified to suit the Korean context, and the holy trinity - writing, directing, and acting - are spot on.

Happy Friday beanies!!!

I hope everyone had a great week~

Some drama update. I'm liking Perfume a lot. I can't imagine the withdrawal I'm gonna face when it ends. I'm very, very, very curious about the ending. This week's episode was fun and I'm glad they don't drag stuff out. More background stories were revealed, confrontations happened. Jae Hee's husband is spiralling and turns out he is an ultimate sleazebag. He needs to go away and stop ruining peoples lives especially Jae Hee's.

I have hopes for a happy Jae Hee ending~ it looks like its going that route. 4 out of the 5 most viewed moments in Perfume are Jae Hee scenes. My personal favourite from the 5 was the Love in The Time of Cholera reunion between Jae Hee and Yi Do. Feeellllsss~ ahaha

On to some sadder news...rabbit is dying. It's still alive now, but it's like a ticking time bomb. We don't know when will it implode and all is gone~ we're searching for alternatives, hopefully it works out.

That's all for now. Have a happy weekend beanies!!!

*finger hearts*

Is anyone still watching ASEUDAL CHRONICLES, aka the non-adventures of THE HORSE AND HIS BOY? I think I need therapy.

I officially dropped this drama around Ep. 4, but now I can't wait for the next episodes. How can this happen to me? I thought I had high standards. :P

Watching this show has been like falling for those stalker serial killers in dramas, that you know in real life are totally not good for you. The show has so much that is totally WRONG: Part 1 dragged too much, the pace was all off, it was violent, cringy CGI, convoluted politics about nothing much, the light director was drugged, and Taelha was underdressed while everyone else went around in furs.

Part 2 suddenly became interesting thanks in large part to Psycho Elf Boy. Redundant characters are being killed off, and plot threads are starting to come together. This show has three Parts, each 6 episodes. Is it too late or is there enough time to wrap it up coherently in Part 3? There are only a few episodes left!

In short, is this what it means to watch a trainwreck? But it's a beautiful trainwreck *sob*

I disagree with you about this drama called trainwreck. Okay i might be biased towards SJK project and Kim Won Seok. Because I think the world they created is what make me stay. I was amused at the little detail they put. They definitely give effort and i'm so glad the writers is not making it easy for Eun Seum and Tanya, heck even Saya just because they are special. If only Jang dong Gun give better performances (it's not he is bad, but just abit underwhelming.)The arc surrounding his char will be more appreciated.

Required fields are marked *

That's not what I meant. I won't know for sure if this is a trainwreck until it's finished and find we've crashed into a cliff, or if it might end up being something wonderful. I just don't know if there is enough time left to flesh out this world and tie together all the threads in the story.
Tagon is definitely underwhelming for someone who's supposed to be cunning.

5
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you. It's quite well-done. Except for the flowy white gowns thing. And all the characters feel real enough and are all well-played except for some of the Wahan tribe folks who have a tendency to overact but overacting is common in many kdramas. I think we are seeing how weak "strength" can be when we watch Tagon. It's all external. He has had to put on this external veneer of power and strength but he's a wounded rejected little boy who's afraid of being found out. JDG shows that well and perhaps we should be underwhelmed when we see the emperor without his clothes.

Fast forward was invented for Asa Ron

Don't badmouth Asa Ron. In another universe (VOICE), he's Mo Tae-goo's Daddy.

A Kim Jae-wook cameo might be just the ticket to balance out the psychos.

I blame Asa's writers for the compulsion to fast forward.

Still watching ARTHDAL, @wishfultoki. Things got interesting when long-lost twin was revealed. Better yet, the literal blue bloods still walk among them -- and the Arthdalians are pretty oblivious.

In general, I don't feel deeply invested in the characters. Certainly not the way I am towards those in NOKDU FLOWER. Maybe a better comparison would be THE FIRST KING'S FOUR GODS / THE LEGEND (24 eps.). Granted, it is longer, so there is more time to develop the characters. It starts out in mythical times and then flashes forward to the reign of Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo. Prince Damdeok & Friends prevail against a memorable baddy, and it's epic. I find the murky, shadowy world of Arthdal to be depressing, which may be intentional, but it looks like too many other under-illuminated Kdramas. I've already exceeded my quota of dystopias.

Still, I'll keep watching. There have been enough twists to keep me interested.

@pakalanapikake Yay, I'm so glad I'm not alone watching this. I'm counting the hours until ep. 11 :)
It's been a while since I saw THE LEGEND, and I vaguely recall that I snoozed through the final episodes. Maybe it's better that ARTHDAL will be on the short side of "historical fantasy" dramas. Better to end with a crash than a whimper maybe?
*sigh* I'm with you on the murky depressing world of Arthdal. I prefer my fantasy dramas to have more green nature and sunshine... but I guess the drama is determined to tell us Arthdalians have ruined their city and the land. It's like seeing Isengard under Saruman.

@wishfultoki,

Oh, so now ARTHDAL is a mashup of GAME OF THRONES and LORD OF THE RINGS. The elevator on the cliff face replaces the Tower. LOL! Then Saya should sic Shelob on his kidnappers.

*evil grin*

THE LEGEND was great up until the last 2 episodes or so, IIRC -- and that's because Yonsama had been badly injured on set while doing wire-fu. I don't know how he made it through the final battle scenes. It was much like Go A-ra's injuries virtually sidelining her in HAECHI, which was a shame -- but worse, since he was Gwanggaeto the Great and had to vanquish the baddies for the story to end. Real life intruded, so I cut Show some slack, and imagined how it would have been.

Hi Everyone and Happy OT!
I hope everyone in the US had a great 4th of July ๐Ÿ˜„

Since I've been loving 1 show The Secret Life of My Secretary or SLOMS, in particular, I decided to go all out to get it out of my system, hoping to be able to move on once I'm done. So I've been putting down my thoughts.

It's one of those shows that although, far from perfect, looks and sounds great, has a plot and pace that makes sense and moves well, is simple, sweet, warm, has great character growth, and ends with everything hanging together effortlessly well. It was one of the most satisfying rom-coms I've ever come across.

I've posted picture collages on my fan wall on some of the parallels and bookending, the cute, repeated coat metaphor and listed stuff that got me appreciating the show more. I feel that I did not give the producers and writer enough credit for delivering a well thought out, and most endearing show, not to mention the most endearing of ML characters and a tremendously likable FL.

I've posted a bunch of thoughts below this link: http://www.dramabeans.com/2019/06/the-secret-life-of-my-secretary-episodes-17-32-series-review/#comment-3485089
and on my fan wall, to give this show more love. Kudos to all who worked on making it such a lovable gem!

It was sweet but they could've shortened the time of the lie and extended the reunion after the lie.

Someone was saying that the timing of the revelation ensured that there was conflict for a sufficient length of the show, otherwise we might have had too much sweet like in What's Wrong with Sec Kim, which would have bored us.

I personally found the reasons for her not telling the truth earlier quite organic to the show and in line with the dynamics of her character's and Veronica Park's relationship.

I'm grateful to show for giving us so many sweet ๐Ÿ˜ couple moments, even before they were officially a couple so that we do not feel 'cheated'. LOL. ๐Ÿ˜†

There were other layers that could have been mined for conflict. The backstory of the best friend , the issue with the embezzling, the reason why his "mom" was so unreasonably cold, the daily life/hopes of secretary's brother. I think so much could have been done with those conflicts. But too much time was spent on the main characters repeatedly doing stuff that didn't move the plot along or add texture to the secondary and tertiary characters. The three secretaries had no real personality and were interchangeable. Compare with High School King which is a story of a lie where we get so much shown to us and we get to know all the zillion characters well and yet remained intimate. I do think it's a sweet drama but extending a lie to keep the conflict going means that the story has only one conflict it cares about. And this happens in so many dramas that it seems to be a common cheat for certain writers. I gave up on daily dramas because of that so i have no patience with draw-out lies as the only source of conflict.

Amen and amen. Dragging the lie out was just plain cruel, and alienated me from Secretary. I couldn't really trust her after her unearned "redemption." She should have groveled a lot longer than she did. Hrumpf! ;-)

I mainly tuned in for Kim Young-kwang, and finally got the balm I needed for the Jang Do-han-shaped hole in my heart. In spite of that cruel homage to LOOKOUT. Grrr.

So I am liking ARTHDAL so far I just can't tell which one is the main character between EUNSEOM and SAYA. Good day everyone.

I have a feeling that the pair of twins have to be reunited, and then something drastic will occur. I'm concerned that Tan-ya is going to end up with Saya, only to freak out when she realizes that Eunseom is still alive after all.

I suspect that the Neantals who have been bumping off unsuspecting Arthdalians have been keeping an eye on Saya since he was taken from Dad's hiding place. I think they're the grown-up boys Dad and Asa Hon rescued at the time of the plague.

Yes, the Tan-ya Eunseom twist would be typical K-drama.

I also agree with the Neantals being the boys Dad and As Hon rescued.

Happy Friday, Beanies! I just moved into a new place this sweltering week in July. There are boxes everywhere and furniture has not yet arrived to unpack the contents of the boxes into. My dog is feeling insecure and is literally glued to my side, making it even more difficult to move around, lol. Just thought I'd take a break from adding & checking off items on my to-do lists to pop over here for a moment. (It's Friday, after all.) I'll be coming back to read what everyone else is up to!
