Happy Friday to everyone.

My week:
I'm waiting for next ep of HDL & I'm also going to look up the latest ep of WWW for *cough* research.

And I'm slowly expanding my kpop library, I've been stagnant too long 😅

Hi Everyone and Happy OT!

I'm happily recovering from the flu but the consistent body ache and headache is a bore! Can't even enjoy as much of my shows as I'd like.

Out of the blue, I decided to just try any newly airing show and clicked on a Hong Kong drama: my first in many, many years. This one is called, Our Unwinding Ethos. It airs 5 times a week, and within the first 2 episodes, it completed one investigation. It revolves around a Folklore Dept Lecturer and a Reporter who end up trying to solve crimes hidden by urban legends of the ghostly kind.

For a change I see people driving on the left side of the road with driver sitting on the right!!! Exactly the way we do it over here LOL. It got me a bit disoriented for a while, since I was so used to seeing driving done in S Korea and the US.

My first impressions: It's not as slick and does not look as 'beautiful' as the modern k and c dramas do, however it is fast paced and it's good that it completes the investigation quickly. I'm waiting to see if there's going to be an overall arc for the series.

Downside: the investigation, clues, and solution by super sleuth Folklore Dr Poon was too simplistic and too pat. It reminded me of Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys or some children's mystery.

Not enough is given to the audience to help us along with sleuthing. We mostly see Dr Poon thinking and coming up with stuff and the crime/mystery is all explained quickly at the end with much exposition as people stand around to listen. I also felt that the incidence of murder was pretty high and that the appropriate responses to those killings were somehow lacking. Perhaps the series is going mainly for what's quick and easy and is sacrificing character and plot development.

Not sure if I'll continue, however it does give me a whole bunch of ghostly urban legends and does have some creativity in the mysteries that hide the crimes. I find it amusing that everyone will squeal with fright and believe the legends without a blink or a doubt. Somewhat juvenile, and an easy watch.

Your post just reminded me that I had a dream I was in a car with the steering wheel on the right side as well, but we were also driving in the right, so I assumed I was in Italy, until I saw the Arc De Triomphe on the left. Speaking of, that traffic must be a engineering nightmare!

@ally-le Are you referring to the traffic in Hong Kong city? I was there and in the rush hour once ... not pretty. I think the half hour journey became something like 2 hours, which is not bad, I know, compared to some other places.

The bridges and connections among their hills were lovely to see.

@growingbeautifully,
Happy OT to you! I visited Hong Kong (and Asia) fo the first time in 2015. When I returned to the States I discovered TVB HK crime dramas on Hulu. LIVES OF OMISSION and HIGHS and LOWS were the first two I watched. It was fun to be back in HK vicariously. From these dramas I went on to the world of kdramas and haven’t looked back.
I was reminiscing of all this because on Wednesday I took in at the theater the HK action film THE WHITE STORM 2 starring Andy Lau and Louis Koo. Among the cast (and nice to see again) were H&L alums Michael Miu and MC Jin.

Yes. I enjoyed them. Including the 2 shows above I have watched TVB's E.U. , TIGER CUBS, and LINE WALKER. They are a few years old now.
Also Netflix is carrying the HK crime drama OCTB (2017) a Youku web drama. It looks interesting

I grew up watching TVB dramas on my local channel and learned to speak Cantonese from watching these shows daily for 10 years, progressing from a non-speaker to a fluent speaker (although I still can't read Chinese characters). HK culture and cantonpop were a big part of my life growing up and I was really devastated to see the state it is in now compared to the glory days of the 90s and early 2000s. It is truly the end of an era for HK dramas.

Like you, I've since migrated to the world of kdramas and never looked back because watching any TVB or HK shows now just does not compare to kdramas in terms of production value, acting, plot and music. I still watch the occasional HK movies and rewatch old Stephen Chow films to relive the nostalgia of the good ol' days.

I can't even remember the last time I watched a Hong Kong drama. From some of the stills I've seen, the gap between them and mainland dramas is huge. In the golden age of HK entertainment, who'd thought they are the least popular in asia now?

Hey @hebang Did you see that 'Bitches' @packmule3 is back in circulation? And to top off that good news is that she's watching Hotel Del Luna

(I feel like I have to write Hotel de la Luna somehow... Del Luna feels wrong, although I don't know Spanish. I just checked that it means Hotel of the Moon. If it has and extra 'l' as in Hotel del la Luna then = Hotel from the Moon. Intriguing ... so why is the title in between 'of' and 'from'?)

Anyway, she's got a good long write-up on what led her to watch this show and you know her, ... her explanations and how she links things are so insightful!

Hi everyone! I hope everyone had a good week~

Perfume is ending next week and I'm wondering what else can Shin Sung Rok be in his future projects. I've watched nearly all his projects and made this list:

Dramas
1. The Last Empress : cray2 Empreror with an extra cray mother
2. Return : totally cold manipulative killer CEO
3. Man Who Dies to Live : a clumsy banker. A hilarious son in law - father in law pairing
4. On The Way To The Airport : charismatic pilot with family problems. But he got child custody, so he was not that bad of a person.
5. Trot Lovers : a good hearted entertainment company CEO. Didn't get the girl in this too 😢.
6. Liar Game : an awesome liar. Very good at decieving/manipulating others.
7. The King's Face : a face reader with a hidden agenda
8. You Who Came From the Stars : ring twisting vet wannabe who asks about your health before killing.
9. All about My Family : a short tempered PD with an overbearing mum.
10. 3 Dads 1 Mum : the most attached to baby Ha Sun. A great cop but bumbling outside of work.
11. Thank You : a good businessman but weak with personal relationships. He also has a controlling mum.
12. Hyena : a chef and a very conflicted man trying to figure out his identity. He was so conflicted.
13. Perfume: a genius fashion designer, child musician prodigy with 52 phobias and 35 allergies.

Movies
1. Age of Shadows : A rich businessman on Gong Yoo and Han Ji Min's side.
2. Lover of 6 years : an hearing-impaired illustrator who was a nice person. And didn't get the girl.

Happy Friday peeps!

Currently watching Hotel Del Luna live and I am loving it so far. However I have been bitten badly by the Hong Sisternims in the past so I am moving cautiously. My Ahjussi made me respect IU in a new light and she is absolutely nailing her role in HDL! It seems like the role was made for me. Fingers crossed it remains interesting.

On a whim I clicked on Marriage Contract on Netflix. I can sort of guess how the story would end but by catnip is watching people fall in love :) This is my first time watching Uee on screen and something tells me I will be checking out her other works too!

Yes, IU is wonderful in Hotel DL. Her role is strongly augmented by the wonderful clothes and accessories she gets to wear. I've become such a fan of IU/Man Wol's stylist that I've started screen capturing some of the clothes on my fan wall. Loved them all, especially the blue skirt suit and blouse ... and all her hairstyles!!! 😜

The script progress, how does it actually work? Do the (popular ones) actors get a few to choose from, or do they actually have to search themselves or do even the sctipt writers have the chance to pick actors to send their scripts to?

One time I heard Park Bo-gum gets all the scripts first, and other actors get to see next. I wonder if it is still same. lol From what I read, writers usually go with who production company and PD pick.

First, it all depends on the caliber of the production team and the budget that the production company allocates to the drama. Writers/PDs can pitch synopses to see which network is interested. A network can also initiate interest by thinking what kind of story is needed to please their viewers and assign it to a writer/PD. The bigger the combination (network+writer+PD) the bigger the budget to afford the actors they want.

With a writer and PD on board, they start brainstorming appropriate actors to send their pilot scripts to for consideration. Popular or rising actors will be considered first of course, but there will be known limitations: they will realistically consider “ ___ is out of our budget”, “___ is already casted in something else”, “___ is on hiatus”, etc. Some writers/PDs send offers straight to the actors they’ve worked with before. There are also brokers that help agencies cast their actors that will actively do the matchmaking once they get tipped that some drama/movie is on the horizon.

Hi Everyone! ..... I hope you are all doing well today.

Perfume - So happy when Min Jae-hee threw that wine in her ex-husband's face. He's such a jerk. ....... This is ending next week so I'm wondering how they'll end this. I'm hoping we'll finally get explanation on the perfume!

Nokdu Flower - Yi-hyun what are you doing??! ....... I have about 8 episodes left to watch and this drama hasn't lost steam since it started. It's soooo good!

Hotel Del Luna - Interesting first two episodes. Cautiously optimistic at this point, but I look forward to where this may take us.

WWW: Haven't watched this week's episodes yet but all I know is Ta-mi and Morgan should not be a couple.

Designated Survivor: 60 Days - I'm liking the actor playing presidential secretary/advisor Cha Young-jin. He has a certain acting style where you always want to pay attention to his scenes. ....... On a completely shallow note, Ji Jin-hee and Lee Joon-hyuk in scenes together. I swear you just don't know who to look at first!

Justice - I've only watched the first episode and all I have are questions.

That's all for now. Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Nokdu Flower is gorgeous - beautifully written, directed, and acted, but it's not an easy watch. It's set in a pretty brutal era and that definitely comes through (although from doing some of my own research, some of the real events were actually even worse than they're portrayed).

Totally agree - Nokdu Flower is a great historical drama. I am not much of a historical drama fan but watched this due to the history and Jo Jung Suk, Yoon Shi yoon and Han He-ri and they are did very well - including ALL the supporting cast! Oh, i am still very affected by the drama. Even though i was watching it on the same day it was aired for the most part - i found myself delaying watching a few episodes because i was so afraid of what will happen to our 3 main characters. They all faced perilous events just about in every episode.
i really enjoyed so many aspects of this drama.

BTW - Nokdu seems to be in vogue rencetly as there will be a romance-comedy saeguk call The Joseon Romantic-Comedy Tale of Nok-Du that will be airing in September.

@scifiwritir Well, there is tragedy and brutality in Nokdu Flower. But this story can't be told with the harshness removed. And I'm sure they can't really show things as they truly happened. But all this being said, it's a very, very good drama. It's been interesting since day one without losing steam.

Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) of the idol actors aside from Eunjung, I thought IU actually was the one who showed the most promise. Almost 10 years later and looking at everyone else, it's true.

I think it's a pity Wooyoung didn't pick up more roles or wanted to pursue acting. I'm soooooo in love with chipmunk Jason. He had a few intelligible English lines, but overall I thought his English was good so when I read older comments in recaps about how his English was cringe, I started feeling bad for myself since my English is at the same level lol.

I read from fans apparently he was offered a few roles but turned them down as he wanted to focus on music. As well, he went through a slump and at one point wanted to give everything up. So perhaps even if JYPE manages to do their job and get scripts to him, it's his decision at the end of the day. I will still hold this hope for an acting comeback. Yep, also been checking his variety appearances and fell really hard for his solo Quit right now because of ICSYV. It's just so my type of song.

So I gave up on all of them and started watching Queen Seon Duk. I love it so far. Nam Ji Hyun was such an impressive child actress. I wonder why she’s didn’t get as popular as the 3 Kims because she was obviously much farther ahead in terms of acting ability.

Nam Ji-hyun is my favorite! But I think I've read somewhere that she's applauded as the queen of romantic comedy. I believe she's as popular as the three kims.

I’m talking about her child actress days. She clearly not mentioned as often as the 3 Kims while her filmography is much more impressive.

I loved QUEEN SEON DUK, though I skipped the last ten episodes for reasons that I shall not divulge because it would contain spoilers 😜(but I’m different to most viewers, who particularly loved those episodes).

Did you know that IU sings the OST theme “Wind Flower”?

Good morning all! Happy Friday!! I had an incredible week, mostly because yesterday I got my Korean OPI test results back--Advanced Low, which I learned is as good enough to get me a job teaching High School! I was happy.

In drama news, I sped watched Beautiful World (it was pretty good) and caught the premier for Class of Lies... of my heavens, it was so good. I'm also really looking forward to the ending? of Perfume (it is only 32 episodes, right? ...or 40?) Asianwiki says 36.

Lastly, I have a friend who really wants me to watch Oh My Ghostess but Jealousy Incarnate mildly ruined me for Jo Jeong Suk (I had SLS so strong TT TT)... but I want to watch Doctor Playbook later this year, so I need to get over it and enjoy his acting. Oh My Ghost, here I come!

PS. Kant would want you to watch Kdrama, it'd be better universe if we all did it. #categoricallytwisted

I've started Golden Garden. I didn't think anyone here would be interested to watch it haha. The only reason I'm watching this is because I loved Han Ji Hye and Lee Sang Woo's couple in last year's weekend drama Marry Me Now and could not believe they were reunited this quickly again in dramaland. I also found that it's a gold mine of daily drama alums, namely Oh Ji Eun, which I was dying to see more of after the daily drama Unknown Woman and even a cameo by Wang Bit Na of the daily drama Mysterious Personal Shopper.

I'm halfway through the second episode (3-4) and all I can say is, I wonder why this is not a daily drama because it sure has the makings of one. And yes, it is full on makjang but that's what I signed up for.

Happy OT.
A quibble. I am watching and enjoying (and current!) DESIGNATED SURVIVOR: 60 DAYS.
The quibble is that in this case the title is not quite accurate. Minister Park became Acting President of the ROK not because he was the designated Minister not to attend the President’s State of the Nation Address. He was fortunately not at the address because of events earlier that day. (I don’t want to spoil). Minister Park was the only surviving person in the Presidential line of succession.
In the US there is a Cabinet Member designated not to attend the President’s State of the Union address in order to preserve the Presidential line of succession.

I see ... you're saying that he's just there by default because he was the only survivor and not because he was designated?

I took it to mean that because he was the survivor, he became designated. LOL. I'm not actually watching the show though.

Happy Friday! It’s been a grueling week, so I’m ready to just take it easy.

Finally finished “Sky Castle”, only took me 3 months. It was good, but didn’t live up to the hype for me.

Just started www search, but not getting into it yet.

BBC show “Line of duty” is an awesome series - if you have not seen it yet, check it out. I binged all 5 seasons. Starts off slow so give it a few episodes for it to get going. Season 2-4 were amazing!

My biggest accomplishment this week was saving a dog’s life. One of the shelters posted a red alert of a handsome husky that had only 48hrs for a rescue group to claim, if not he would be put to sleep since there’s no more room at the shelter. I shared the story on FB and IG and through my cousin, we found someone to adopt the dog! He’s going to begin a happy chapter of his life very soon.

Just goes to show the power of social media 😁

I foster kittens, if anyone in SoCal ever wants a kitten, please 👀 for me. My IG handle is mr.and.mrs.meowmeow. Thus far, I’ve gotten 4 fosters adopted by people I know.

Have a great weekend beanies!

I like BBC police drama. They do not beautify the cast! The story was quite gripping.
The Sky Castle is beautified and grand scaled to the point that I felt a bit ridiculous. I thought that some needed to be punished but the drama wanted to end with some sort of happiness and consolation. If this were made by BBC, how would it have ended, I wonder....

Hello all,
I've asked hubby to buy tons of hard lemonade and hard cider to hunker down for our heat wave weekend. It's cool now so i might dash out to the park with the family before the heat arrives. Other than that, am trying to shrink a 350 page wip to 150 pages, am packing away and preparing for the move next month.

Dramas:

Watcher -- My present kdrama crack. And yes, i am hoping for a noona romance between our rookie and our bitter prosecutor/lawyer.

Hotel Luna -- so good but am not gonna watch it. Am avoiding supernatural dramas for a while. Love 'em but sometimes i get nightmares.

Doctor Detective -- so good but am not gonna watch it. Am avoiding corporation crime dramas because all that privileged chaebol corporate abuse puts me on edge.

Mr Temporary -- I think my heart can manage this although there was some super-stress at all the injustice.

Level Up-- Okay, i really do like Sung Hoon but his manager/agency picks some bad roles for him. When will he get a great drama?

Rookie Historian (and Joseon Survival) are my fave type of dramas right now. Fun without being too tragic. I really love Kang Ji Hwan so i'm kinda...aaaaarrrghing about the assault allegations. I hope he isn't a habitual kind of scumbag. I went through defending Kim Hyun Joong back in the day so am burnt out on not-my-oppa blues.

WWW. -- I fast-forwarded through the chaebol and main lead love angst and only stopped to look at Scarlet and her idol.

Perfume -- finally, at last! That revelation took a long time coming. I would've wanted the reveal earlier and outworkings after that.

Partners for Justice -- This drama is seriously overwrought but i will suffer through anything for No Min Woo.

Cdramas --

Go Go Squid -- my current drama crack. Omigosh, so much fun and so much fluffiness.

Longest Day in Chang'An -- I have to seriously rewatch the last six episodes because i am confused as heck.

Saw Juror 8 on viki. Fun and tropey. Not great, not bad, but Park Hyung Sik is one good actor.
Have a great weekend, all.

Not that I am expecting or need a romance in Watcher but I too did wonder about rookie and the hardened lawyer. Right now, I am just happy with the team dynamics. I'm most pleased with the young woman on the team. Who says cute and competent don't go together?

Ah, you've reminded me that I started on Doctor Detective and although I'm always a bit wary of gritty, true-to-life shows that get me in the heart, this one got me staying to watch the first 2 episodes. I was just so sad, knowing that this is based on true life. Show really knows how to get us up in arms against rotten, controlling chaebols. I hope I have the stamina to take the hard knocks to the heart that are bound to keep coming up. 🤪

yeah, i got too upset and i was tense throughout the first episode. I just knew "best son ever" was gonna die and i didn't want my heart to get overwhelmed with all the injustice in the world. I read a few articles on how samsung etc and other large corporations pretty much rule in lawsuits. Plus all the poverty. i just couldn't. i had to let it go.

Isn’t it awful about Kang ji hwan? I really like him too but this is just awful. After Hollywood blew open the #metoo my husband and I have often debated whether you can separate the crime from the art and i’ve Always been absolutely not! Art made by a sicko should be outcast as well. Now I kind of get the degree of mixed feelings.

It is just downright disgusting that an actor would throw away his career in this way that harms another person's life and sets a bad example for young people in the country. The cost of his behavior is huge, not just to him and the women directly involved, but his company, the drama producers, advertisers and other actors. I can't help but curse alcohol for it's part in this devastation. We hear about this case because this man was famous, but this type thing goes on every single day where people get so drunk they barely know what they are doing or what is being done to them. Alcohol is an ingredient of many rape cases but also of many accidents and physical and emotional abuse (to name just a few). People should not drink to the point of not knowing what they are doing and if it is their habit to do that, then there is a problem and no good can come from it. Sorry for getting on the band wagon here. It's just that I come from a family where alcoholism has caused actual deaths and that shadow is always hanging over.

>whether you can separate the crime from the art and i’ve Always been absolutely not!

It is interesting, I've always said we should. What if the bad person is someone who invented something humankind needs? Should we ignore it? I know it's easy to ban one simple actor but others cases are more complex. And if we use one rule for maybe a music genius should we use another for an actor? I'm not defending him by the way, just the idea.

Totally understand your point. Does his current crime make his previous works (drama or music or art or whatever) any less good? No but somewhere it feels like supporting the artist as well and that’s where my moral confusion lies.

In an actor, producer or musician case, think about his works as a group project, many people worked hard to write, produce and act in that, if their works get banned, you punish a lot of innocents for his sin. Not to mention robbing future generations of enjoying something potentially great. In theory of course, and this is really not about kdramaland anymore ehheh.

2

I just couldn't believe the news when i heard it because i would think that an actor that is in an presently airing drama would be smarter than this - although there is NEVER A GOOD TIME to be doing something like this.

The topic you brought up above - can u separate the crime from the art - is something that i have been grappling with myself when Choi Jong Hoon of FT Island was embroiled with the others in Mar 2019 illegal video sharing (and assault too) because i am an fan of FT Island music - and i acknowledge that CJH is a very talented musician who has contributed much to the FT Island sound that i have enjoyed thus far. I cannot take that away from him and the group.
I have a profound sense of disappointment in him each time i hear their music (which is often as i love Lee Hong Ki) because although FTIsland will go on with their 4 members - they 'sound' will change going forward as they will be missing a very good keyboardist and guitarist.

There are reasons why one gets nightmares with supernatural dramas and horror/terror stories... it is because demons really exist. You are wise keeping yourself away from whatever form of spiritism.
