Anyone else missing lowkey stories in their kdramas? All about a boy meeting a girl-.... no serial killers, no aliens, no weird ass illness involving the brain??

I have never seen one. Even Misaeng has many outrageously dramatic moments.

Im OK with outrageous moments; its the artificial contrivances brought in to ramp up the drama that I take exception to.

I'll take a headtfelt kimchi slap over an insane serial killer any day.

Also, ....My Mister, Just Between Lovers, Misaeng, BTIMFL. They're out there!

That pollution is easily visible in every form of media from any demography. That's why i even deducted points from the above mentioned shows. I'm into Slow Tv so even a normal kdrama looks quite unbalanced media form from various points of introspection.

One Spring Night?

I was taken aback on how "When the Camellia Blooms" started with a flash forward to a serial killing, a flashback to introduce the main characters, the a 6 year jump to the present. Considering it was billed as a light romantic comedy about an outsider (single mother) coming to a small town to start of a new life, there is a dark pall over the entire show.

It is not lost that this week the SK police finally solved its longest open serial killer case but the statute of limitations had run. (The suspect is in prison for life for a different murder.)

I found KJH character too meek and reserved after 6 years of being a fixture in the neighborhood. You would have hoped that the stereotypical jealousy of the working women would have changed over time. It seems like the story line is setting up everyone as a potential suspect in the next Joker murder.

Has the statue of limitations run out? I remember a drama (was it Signal?) of a real life case which prompted the revision of the statute of limitation ie there is no longer a limit for murder. All I know about Korean law is what I learned from dramas.

Korea removed the statute of limitations on murder in 2015, but the ruling is not retroactive. So the statute of limitations still applies to any cases prior to 2015. Kind of makes you wonder what was the point?

4

It's no like that, it means that statue of limitations apply to those cases were it run out before 2015 law, but cases from late 90 - early 00 are still active thanks to this law. And it not like there are no new unsolved murders after 2015.

I started to watch Camelia and thought I had clicked on the wrong drama due to the opening scene. Might come back to it later.

I was taken aback by the serial killing in WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS, too. On the other hand, I'm really enjoying the rest of the story. I like the offbeat vibe very much. It would be nice if the danged murder arc could be dispatched quickly so show could focus on Dong-baek's life and times in Ongsan and her romance with small-town cop Yong-sik.

What a great cast! Kim Kang-hoon steals the show as Dong-baek's son. Oh Jung-se (what a chameleon!) as "Lord" No and Jeon Bae-su as Capt. Byun are turning in dandy supporting performances. Kim Ji-suk has made Dong-baek's first love into a sympathetic character. And I'm thoroughly enjoying Kang Haneul and Gong Hyo-jin -- and Ko Du-shim.

It did seem to come careening out of left field, much to my surprise.

I agree the supporting cast of characters is excellent! The false notes for me are in the scripting- I can't get a consistent sense of Dong baeks character, ergo, it's hard to root for her..

A nice slice of life story contaminated by a serial killer mystery... I wonder what decision process led to this mixed genre as a great idea?

Required fields are marked *

I think the first rom-com I remember having a serial killer was Let's Eat, which is weird. Why does a mukbang show need a serial killer? After that everything started having serial killers.

4

@hebang,
Good question. I feel as if I'm watching WHAT'S WRONG WITH SECRETARY KIM, another seemingly light and fluffy show with a disconcerting dark side to it.

2

@pakalanapikake,
I guess after WATCHER, CLASS OF LIES, ARTHDAL I needed something lighter so I delved into CAMELLIA. Like you I really enjoyed the first two episodes but I can do without the serial killer angle. That plot line does not look like it will be disposed of anytime soon unfortunately.
Also is it just me but the standard conversational mode there is shouting. Lol. After we get to know the characters better I hope the decibel level comes down.
Yes, the little guy is already giving a terrific performance.

@blnmom, @pakalanapikake

I wonder if it’s as simple as the various investment pools learning the wrong lesson. E.g. they look at Let’s Eat and see it succeeding because of the mixed genre instead of it succeeding in spite of the mixed genre...

I can’t believe there is hard data showing people actually want a romcom-murder mystery mixed drama...

@welh I am totally frustrated that the flash forward to the serial killing of the woman in the field as the dead woman is wearing the bracelet that our main female lead wears. I just can't fathom how our heroine can be the person who is killed. It makes no sense to me. I am wondering if somewhere in the episodes to come that she gives the bracelet to someone else since it was given to her by her son's father and maybe she does that as an act of defiance or something. But I just can't deal with it being her that is murdered.

@zzthorn,
One of our beanies somewhere (and I have gone bug eyed trying to locate it) speculated that the woman in the field maybe Hang Mi the kleptomaniac server who works for Dong Baek at the Camellia bar. Makes sense in a way. She might have swiped the bracelet.
(Apologies to the beanie whose comment I just referenced.)

Required fields are marked *

Oh wow, that's a relief that it might not be the female lead who dies (but not so good for the kleptomaniac) if that is how it turns out. That definitely could be a possibility! Thanks to you (and to the other beanie) for the hope!

1

@zzthorn, @marcusnyc20 bong-soo,

I thought exactly the same thing about the kleptomaniac's possibly having swiped the bracelet, but haven't posted it yet.

It's also possible that the claw machine with the germanium beaded bracelet was local enough that other residents of Bonghwang could have won such bracelets, too.

I think the new drama "If the weather is good, IΒ΄ll find you" with Seo kang joon and Park min young gonna fill your void. story is about a girl moving to her hometown after being hurt. There she meet a bookstore owner that is living a simple life. He wakes up and drinks his coffee, reads books and write on his blog. His life change after meeting this new girl. It is billed as a healing romance story! I was seeing some illustration from the novel that the drama is based on and seems to be a simple lowkey story :)

This is why I've been watching cdramas lately. Their romances tend to just be sweet and fluffy boy meets girl and not tons of contrived drama. Of course they have those also and their own tropes but I've found cdramas very refreshing lately.

8
4

Required fields are marked *

That's a big plus in my book that they don't try to fit every genre possible in one drama.

5
reply

Required fields are marked *

@trinpie I don't like the sweet and fluffy boy meets girl any more. They're too saccharin and have become stale instead of refreshing. Everyone is such a goody two-shoes with no depth. Except for the 2nd lead female love triangle who always sees a text from the guy she likes to her rival, so she then deletes the text. But wait, I really like The Moon Doesn't Understand My heart...
So I find myself mostly watching wuxia instead of modern. At least there's some sword fighting.
And why do I like the Taiwanese dramas that on the surface have the same fluff? Their characters seem more human to me, with problems and stuff. But I mostly like the Taiwanese dramas that aren't really about romance so much, but are more about relationships between everyone.

1

Required fields are marked *

I can take fluffy and cute once in a while but not in the frequency that c-ent churns them out in the recent years. Wasn't like this a decade ago.

An aspiring screenwriter complained about the unspoken rule: The female lead must be sweet and innocent, and must have only one boyfriend or love one guy in her life.

The largely young female audience wants a likable male lead to love one and only one girl.

Plus the regulators want dramas to portray good morals and positive values while avoiding dark negative stuff.

By the way, have you tried "Birth of the Drama King" ε°‘εΉ΄ζ±ŸζΉ–θ―. Its source was a short (unfinished at the time of drama's airing) BL. Drama converted it to a literal bromance - The leads became long lost full-blood brothers.

In the novel, one lead was tasked to seduce the other with bad/embarrassing pickup lines. In the drama, one lead was tasked to befriend the other with the same bad/embarrassing pickup lines.

It's a low budget production, lighthearted and goofy. If you are in the right miod, could be a hilarious watch.

Funny you should post this - I've been going thru the krama list on Viki looking for old GOOD kdramas to watch instead of the terrible new ones that have recently been aired. But most of the old ones I've watched too many times and simply can't watch anymore. Put them on my list, try them, delete them.
This is why I've discovered c-dramas and Taiwanese dramas. But I wonder how long that will last.

Happy weekend Beanies!

This week takes the crown for being the most horrible, but it should be the last one of its kind, I hope. I stressed about my postponed performance appraisal last week, because knowing my boss and her connections, I would be ambushed with a negative evaluation without any room for talking on my part. I even feared that she would get me fired, even though that should be a bit of a stretch.

Should.

This Tuesday out of nowhere, I get called to the Director of Recruitment’s Office to meet with him and my bosses. I guess I do know my boss better than I hoped I did, because not only was the evaluation bad, she did actually get me fired.

The reason is not enough productivity (because I am too slow). True, but they actively did whatever they could to enlarge the problem, instead of guiding me towards improvement. At least I have a four week cancellation period until mid-October to get everything sorted out, but unemployment strikes again afterwards.

Instead of shedding tears as I feared I would, I went beyond caring in a split second after that announcement. Five months of bullying on the job can do that to you, it seems.

Of course that comfortable numbness was not to last. Wednesday morning reality struck not only me, but also my infected intestines. I am currently suffering gastroenteritis and on sick leave until Monday.

I admit that I am hurt by the way it all happened, and that I dread the inevitable unemployment. However, I am very relieved to be gone from that toxic workplace soon.

Being ill is also no fun, but since I am recovering well I get plenty of sleep, appetite, food and time to lazily catch up on some reading and K-dramas!

pope must start issuing Sainthood certificates to enlightened beings. I'm in awe. Really. Such grace bestowed upon me by face masks.

Said more than 2 dozens by me

Writer - Director - Actor
What a human read and what they interpret differs. Then they have to sync their interpretation to reach an outcome. That's why i always say acting is overrated and story makes an actor.

Acceptance and acknowledge are too completely different things( how many times this line needs to be repeated?

Its fun to see various interpretations flying around whether -ve or +ve. Its fiction in its own might. So explanations and clarifications are justification are just that.

I'm not afraid to state that I will stay narrowminded if it means catering to my own values of not imprisoning refugees or committing genocide. I'm pretty secure in the belief that there is no pro to this wholesale devaluation of whole swaths of peoples. Hi Everyone! ..... I hope you are all doing well today.

Arthdal Chronicles - Still can't believe that Saya has been reduced to being a character who just walks around not doing much other than speak in hushed tones.

Let Me Hear Your Song - I'm still a little miffed that we haven't heard more bad singing. For weeks I've been the one exclaiming, "Let meeeee hear your song!!!"

Doctor John - So some of the people in this show have a major problem with Dr. John treating patients because he can't feel what the patients do. Following this logic then, physicians must be shot to be able to tend to gunshot victims or physicians must have suffered a heart attack to tend to cardiology patients, and so on, with all the possible types of patients any physician may encounter. This is ridiculous.

That's all for now. Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

I watched Divine Fury last night and was disappointed how superficial the second part of the movie was, it has a feel of TV movie than cinematic experience, while weirdly Chinese Soulmate(2016) was less flashy or polished but felt like "the movie". Still deep in Cdramaland I reached the point that I'm bit confused what drama I'm currently watching because I happen to chose dramas where half the cast is the same, how that even possible for such a big industry???

That's a lot! Which of these are good? I've only finished Ashes of Love and planned on picking up Chang'an if I ever get down to it.

I'm trying out The Moon Doesn't Understand My Heart (Viki's title) but it's very low key. You really have to be in the mood to sit down and vegetate. It's a modern one though. If you want historical (wuxia, etc), I'm sure you've watched Bloody Romance, The Legend, one of my favorites is Oriental Odyssey if you're in the mood for quirky, almost silly but not quite. I liked Wu Xin Monster Killer but it's really sad. Nice OST though. (I'll bet you've seen all these).

2

@linda-palapala

I've actually not seen Bloody Romance or properly watched The Legend(this one is on my planned to watch list).

What I really want is more WYB. Yeah, I am hopeless. But the chap has only 2 dramas besides The Untamed.

By the way, did you watch Novoland Eagle Flag? I vaguely recalled that you like Liu Haoran.

2

Re Novoland and Liu Haoran. Yes I like Liu Haoran. I dropped Novoland for 4 reasons: Not enough Liu Haoran scenes, too much anonymous hordes of people mulling around or marching around that I didn't care aboaut, I didn't like the lead lady, I knew they'd cut off the last 10 or so episodes - and it was obvious by how it ended. Wait - #5, it took Viki forever to sub so I gave up.
HOWEVER, they finally finished subbing and so I watched the last episode. Liu Haoran's acting was so good I've decided to watch from the beginning and suffer thru the parts I didn't like before.

2

@outofthisworld Wish I could help you with the "more WYB" but sadly, you're better at spotting him than I am.
I did watch part of some interview with some guy and I know he was talking about WYB because I could actually read the Chinese characters for his name! Woo-hoo, progress on reading Chinese front! (If I could only get the pronunciation correct).

1

@linda-palapala Woohoo! You can recognize his name!

I've been improving on my Chinese too. I never read Chinese articles unless I am stanning someone which doesn't happen often. Now, I am reading and watching his clips. Sometimes I need to check on the words because my chinese isn't really good. So I'll take all these as self-improvement, ha!

I might check out Novoland, probably have to FF a lot.

2

Changa'an is really good, I couldn't get into it properly because of binging other dramas but now I'm savour it, really worth watching.
The King is not Easy, I'm watching it for Bai Lu, really short eps. around 25 min, Bai Lu plays cook obsessing over pretty boys who body swaps with emperor during moon eclipse, cute and quirky. Untouchable Love again Bai Lu, just started it so I'm not sure how fare will I go, but the FL is the same as in Emperors and Me, another short and quirky drama about student who time jumps into past when she is in danger and end up bringing hot and dangerous emperors from various periods to the present.
@linda-palapala, I enoyed WuXin drama a lot too, hidden gem, there is second season but not subbed unfortunately.
I dropped Bloody Romance because FL wasn't believable character and I don't like Victoria Song as an actress so didn't even picked up The Moon :)

2

@shach I thought Victoria Song was just fine in this drama, but it's very low key and even, not much wild emotional ups and downs. I waited to see if he dies at the end, but it had a happy ending (of course). I originally started watching it because I like the male lead's dimples...

2

I've not heard of Emperors and Me or King is not Easy. I'll have to look them up.

But about Untouchable Love. That drama was so weird how it was written. It's based on a book but only the first 16 or so episodes are. The rest of the drama is literally a whole different drama that ignores everything that happened before, and only the main characters are in the second part of the drama. And even their characters are different from how they are in the first part. You could start at episode 17 and it wouldn't affect anything because the rest of the drama has nothing to do with the first 16 episodes. Which is sad as I really liked where the drama was going in that first part. The second part was ok, but I think because I liked the first part much more it put a damper on the rest of the drama, as well as I was extremely confused with the total shift to a different drama.

Thanks for warning, I only watching it for Bai Lu so I don't have any expectations. Those two drama are worth checking , they are really cute and short, 20 episodes and shorter then 40 minutes.

1

@shach I looked them up but confused on King is not Easy. Is it a modern or historical one? The description makes it sound like a historical but then the poster has the guy in modern clothes... So I'm not sure what it is haha.

1

@trinpie, it's historical, just at the end of each episode is a short skit of modern couple with main leads.

1

man! the king is not easy is a really old drama.. i recall watching it, but 2017/16.. can't even recall..

lol.. didn't realize girl was bai lu as you guys mentioned..

that drama was ok in the beginning with all the laughs .. but somewhere a few episodes down got meh

Agencies often send their actors/actresses to a cdrama production in a "package" deal. Sometimes an agency partly or fully finances a drama production. It can control the cast, production and/or script.

Almost 30 years later, Korean police identify suspected Hwaseong serial killer via DNA. Suspect, who is currently in prison serving his sentence for the rape & murder of his sister-in-law, has denied involvement. Shades of Signal ie the killer was incapacitated but not incarcerated

T-11hours until I see my first kpop concert, Beanies! I found Day6 less than a year ago, love everything they’ve put out and now, get to see them live! It’s been following their new music and Jae, sweet Jae, I freaking love him (in a purely noona way, of course)!

Whoa, that Camilla show. I already have a thriller rom-com on my plate with that music insomnia show that’s less about insomnia and music at this point, which were things I liked about it, so I may drop it for Camilla blooms. I’m loving the male leads (both of them) and the little boy is awesome, so I can’t wait to see this little family come together. And she can’t die! My husband has told me that if M she dies, this will be the last Kdrama he’ll ever see...strong words.

I have to watch this week’s Rookie Historian still, but I have a feeling someone will die, so may wait until next week to save my emotions.

Conversation:

Hubby starts first episode of Camilla Blooms and I walk in 6 minutes later.

Me: Whoa, whoa whoa! I know what this isβ€”don’t watch it yet!

Him: She dies.

Me: Stop lying.

Him: I’m not, you missed the fist scene where she’s drug out of the water.

Me: STOP!

Him: *Rewinds to prove to me he’s not lying.*

Me: Dammit you’re right! Why do kdramas do that? I just thought this was a nice little quiet love story!

Moral of the story: Read the genre of kdrama before proceeding.

2nd moral: Only kdramas show a gruesome death scene to introduce a supposed rom-com.

3rd moral: Day6, Gravity tour, here we come!

I did! So fun! You will have a wonderful time I’m January! They are such amazing performers. And yes, there was a point Jae left stage and ran into the audience and I was not 10 feet from him screaming! He looks so tiny up close though. (But I’m used to being beside my 6ft 2in husband, so may have a skewed perspective.) He probably burns more calories in 2 hours than I eat in an entire day. That kid is non-stop!

Hi Everyone!

Hope everyone had a great week! Lately I have been a drama slump. I want an exciting comedy drama to watch to ease the stressful work week. My fellow accounting/finance people will understand this but we are smack in the middle of budget planning where I work so I have had to work 10-12 hr days some days and the only thing I want to do when I get home is watch something exciting and funny. I am thinking one of this weekend family dramas! Any recommendations? πŸ™‚

have you seen Father is Strange? That is, hands down, my favorite weekender. (I also liked Marry Me Now a lot, too)

If you don't want family drama, Chief Kim might also hit the spot?

She was so good in Mr. Sunshine that it may be letting me ignore how cringey she is. And really, she's not that cringey compared to the new Camellia drama. YE GODS.
