Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 7-13, 2019

Let’s check in on our favorite shows again, shall we? Ratings have been pretty good the past few weeks, what with all the excitement of big premieres and finales. But now that we’ve settled in, it looks like numbers are dwindling down again.

Monday-Tuesday drama Tale of Nokdu had a strong start last week — a welcome sight for this particular time slot. It went down, however, from 8.3 percent to 6.7 percent. Then the majority of Wednesday-Thursday dramas had a similar dip, with Running Investigators getting less than 1 percent.

Thankfully, there is some good news: When the Camellia Blooms’ ratings have steadily been going up, reaching an all-time high of 14.5 percent. Really gotta commend Camellia for giving the mid-week time slot hope. Keepin’ the positive train going, weekend drama My Country: The New Age is doing really dang well, too. It was joined by newcomer The Lies Within, which opened to 1.4 percent.

Good for When the Camellia Blooms!

I have some issues with My Country but I’m happy for the rise in ratings. The cinematography is great and it was nice seeing a bit more of Jang Hyuk in Episode 4.

I love Jang Hyuk to pieces and it's a real treat when he is on screen but more screen time might overshadow our young leads. As much as I want more of him, I don't know if it's going to be a good thing for the show as a whole.

But you can't cast Jang Hyuk only to give him a few minutes screen time for earing PPL.
I hope we see more of him in later episodes too. I am confident in our young leads to hold their own. I am pretty sure this won't turn into Jackpot where Choi Min Soo is stealing all the thunder even with minimal screentime. My Country hwaiting! 👍

You are right. I need to be more confident in our young leads.

@kiara, @msrabbit,
Woo Do-hwan had such charisma in MAD DOG that I think he could go toe-to-toe with Jang Hyuk. Yang Se-jong had immense screen presence as the evil clone in DUEL, so I think he could hold his own with Jang Hyuk, too. Both of them have done well in scenes with Ahn Nae-sang, who is intense in that threateningly low-key way of his. ;-)

9

@pakalanapikake Ahn Nae Sang, he's always great, but I did pay enough attn to him until The Guest.

3

* did NOT (for my last comment)

1

Lol at the reference to CMS. What he did in LAWLESS LAWYER was not just scene stealing, it was highway robbery. He chewed up the scenery as a villain. One could tell he was having a ball.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo,
If you're up for Choi Min-soo chomping on the scenery in a fantasy sageuk, I highly recommend THE STORY OF THE FIRST KING'S FOUR GODS. He was spectacularly evil in it. All he needed was Flying Monkeys. ;-)

5

@pakalanapikake,
Thanks for the CMS reference. The first drama I saw him in was the terrific PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

Re the above MY COUNTRY discussion of WDH and YSY vs JH, I agree with you. The young guys will do fine. (They already are.)
I am going to re watch episodes 1 and 2 this afternoon before going on to 3 and 4. I want to get up to speed with you guys.

5

Choi Min-soo is freaking intimidating.
I miss him in sageuks.
I actually didn't like his character In LEGEND (shoot me). I thought it was weird. Jafar weird. Maybe fantasy is not my thing.
I mean he went from SANDGLASS to this?

Yeo Jin-goo in sageuks can wipe the floor with the veterans. He's got the sageuk speech, mannerism etc down from years of practice.

Thanks for this week's Ratings Report, @sailorjumun.

WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS has me glued to the screen. I'm thrilled its doing so well in the ratings. Dong-baek gets a blast from her past. More than one, actually. Hyang-mi creeps me out even more than previously. Sinister doings at the Camellia have me on the edge of my seat.

MY COUNTRY (which is mysteriously missing from the weekend Currently Airing listings) continues to deliver the goods in its second week. Treachery abounds. We get to see much more of Yi Bang-won, with Jang Hyuk cutting a swath across the screen in a chilling foreshadowing of the Strife of Princes.

THE GREAT SHOW is heading into its final week, and has been an enjoyable watch for much of its run. It isn't as humorous now as it started out, but it does have a lot of heart. As expected, the good-for-nothing father of Da-jung's half-siblings has returned, but maybe there is more to him than meets the eye.

FLOWER CREW: JOSEON MARRIAGE AGENCY is getting interesting as King Lee Soo gradually begins to stand up to the puppet masters who think they are pulling his strings. It's official: I loathe the second female lead for her cruelty towards the help. Two reunions shake up Gae-ddong, while her three colleagues have fibrillations of their own.

PEGASUS MARKET continues to chug along in its whack-o little groove. This week's episode 4 was another inspired helping of nuttiness. Best line: Manager Moon's reference to corporate heir-wannabe Kim Gab as a "frilled lizard" (owing to his furry neckpiece that looks more like a silvery Persian cat!).
https://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/00000144-0a1f-d3cb-a96c-7b1f7b100000
Plus there was that epic product demo of the hair-raising car wax, courtesy of the three happy Bbaya "carts" who decided to spiff up Kim Gab's wheels in the parking garage. What a sight. President Jung uses music to charm the savage beasts (high school hoodlums, attracted to the freebie arcade, who shake down young kids for their lunch money) running amok in the store and terrorizing the employees. Manager Moon appears to bow down to political candidate Kim Chi-a, only to perform an amazing feat.

@kiara,
FLOWER CREW, despite its frivolous trappings, is more of a mystery/thriller, and thus a little heavier than the other sageuk-lites. I'm tuning in for ringleader Kim Min-jae, who is acquitting himself well, and Seo Ji-hoon as blacksmith Lee Soo, whom I really enjoyed watching in MAMA FAIRY AND THE WOOD CUTTER.

The other two matchmakers are also growing on me. We've gotten a bit of back story on Joon, but have yet to learn Young-soo's history. It's pretty clear that Gae-ddong's family was destroyed by treachery, but the reason for it is still a mystery.

I was looking for something light and funny. After the 1st episode, I didn't think it was going to be but I'll pick it up after ToN is over.
I need to spread out the sageuk love cause this is it for this year. I don't know what we are getting next year.

Flower Crew is enjoyable and I agree with @pakalanapikake that it's more gripping, for lack of a better word, than the other sageuk-lites.

I was amazed at how quickly Camellia flipped from being a village to like being trapped on a train with a murderer.

It wasn't just DB's fear at the end of last the episode, it was that first the show just cast doubt on everyone until you didn't know where to turn.

Pegasus Market deserves way better!!!Sad about Secret Boutique as well,the story is quite good and Kim Sun Ah is killing it!!!! I can say i'm not suprised by the small rating for ExtraOrdinary You but still wished it pulled better ratings as it's so much fun!!!!

VAGABOND's rating are quite decent if not very good in the current environment. With half of its scheduled episodes aired (8 of 16) I would say that it is the performances of Lee Seung-gi and Shin Sung-rok that are carrying the show. LSG probably more so but SSR's character is now becoming more prominent.
I love the action and the physicality but one of the most poignantly written and acted scenes was this weekend between LSG and actor Ko Kyu-pil. It was unusual for me to see two men (tough guys) to show so much emotion with LSG's character having almost no dialogue.

Ko Kyu Pil was great in that scene..his sadness was raw and heartfelt.

Dalgun's Hoon dream was sad too. LSG kills it with his sadness. But everytime he is back to his regular over the edge adrenaline junkie mode, I start to find Dalgun obnoxious. He is nearly always running and shouting to be heard. Tbh, his silent scenes are far better in comparison.

Vagabond is a Friday-Saturday drama, it has basically no competition in its time slot so I don't know how good 10-11 percent ratings are for that kind of big budget (Moon Lovers was considered not successful for SBS when it had similar ratings/came first in its timeslot for a few weeks but cost half of VB cost). Also I think they split each episode of Vagabond into 3 parts for ratings/episode coverage but the chart here is showing only the ratings of the last part (part 21 and 24).

It's a good showcase for Lee Seung Gi though.

try experimenting with the resolution on your monitor or adjust the % of 100 that your browser settings give you. The ratings do not overlap on any of my computers for this web site. Another thing you can always do when weird things happen on your browser is to clear the cache. Surprisingly, that will clear up lots of problems. Trust me.

Sorry to say the low rating for Secret Boutique seems appropriate to me. A disappointment -- no story or characters there to grip the viewer (no matter how cute Jenny's buddy is). Kim Sun-ah could've phoned it in. While Graceful Family, the little makjang engine that could, rolls on to success.

With all the hype online, it's a surprise to see Extraordinary You suffers such a low ratings. I wonder if this reflects how younger people, which is obviously the show tarfet group, watch their drama nowadays with the platform choices have been increased and not limited to only television.

When Camellia Blooms is understandably targeting more general viewer group and, of course, deserves the number it's getting. It's more down-to-earth, less fantasy, less dashing and less tropey.

Family drama are very long and during the middle very boring because the story is dragged. I tried this one because of the actors but I have no idea if I will be able to watch it until the end.

But it begins with 2 students who wants to meet to commit suicide together. The girl is bullied and we don't really know what happened to the guy but it seemed he did something bad. Only the guy commited suicide and the girl lives. One of the part of the drama is her story. The second part is about her big sister, a very materialistic woman, who wants to marry a rich guy what she did. There are a lot of characters.

Usually weekend dramas are makjang for example birth secrets, chaebols, family conflict, overbearing parents etc. But BLWL was promoted to be not an average weekender. I was intrigued when I read the article, then I remember the episode count and end up not watching. Maybe I'll wait until it is available on KBSworld YT channel. Hehehe

Usualy, I watch for one couple. For this one, I think it will be the same. But it's true that the suicide part was pretty new and dark for a family drama.

Yes, the time jumps were extremely confusing especially when there was key information that has been hidden for years but the viewers are not told in real story time. I think the series may stall for the majority of the 100 episode run because how long can people keep their secrets secret?

Be Melodramatic was a drama really targeted at one specific age group, like the wonderful and also 1-2 percent rated Age of Youth. My Country is a sageuk, has a broader audience target and more promotion.

Take heart, though, Be Melodramatic was really loved in Korea, its OST is doing great on the charts too.
