Idol trainee Kim Bora perseveres in the face of despair in Channel A’s Touch

The second teaser for upcoming Channel A drama Touch has been released. The drama will depict a romance between a deeply in-debt makeup artist played by Joo Sang-wook (Welcome to Waikiki 2), and failed trainee idol Kim Bora (Her Private Life). The teaser features Kim Bora during her idol trainee period. Despite being in training for ten years, she’s always fallen short and hasn’t made the cut for her debut. The scenes that show her unfortunate situation, staying late to practice without any possible hope, and faced with the possiblity that she’s invested years of her life in a dream that may not come true.

Derision and pity can be heard from various people as they discuss and pick apart Kim Bora, while we see her practicing her heart out in a dance room. They scoff at her looks, iffy talent, and that fact that she’s from a poor family. Kim Bora is then shown sitting on a curb with all her things in a box, calling her mother to apologize.

The voiceover continues to make fun of her persistence despite others debuting before her, being tricked by the people around her, and rising to number three on an internet search list while scenes hint that it’s not for a good cause (we see her beg someone who looks like a CEO, then she gets into a brawl). Everyone encourages her to quit, but suddenly those jeers turn into cheers, and in the last scene, we see her shining onstage.

Friday-Saturday drama Touch, written by Ahn Ho-kyung and directed by Min Yeon-hong, will begin airing on January 3 on Channel A.

While a critique of the idol industry is very much in order these days, I don’t like the age difference. They could have skipped the romance and just made him a mentor figure.

I haven't the faintest idea why the massive age difference, my god 18 yrs is too much.

Almost same difference for Mr Sunshine. It was 20 years, wasn’t it?

The romance was not physical in Mr Sunshine and Ae-shin was not a damsel in distress, so I was ok with it. I guess here I don’t like the idea of a struggling trainee falling for a much older guy who will help her? I can’t quite place my finger on it. I usually don’t think much of age difference.

Then there’s Celine Dione and her late husband.

Yes, I wish he was a mentor! I love platonic relationships with an age gap, but almost every time it turns into an uncomfortable romance plot instead :/

How old are they in the drama? If she's a faied trainee idol and trained for 10 years, could her character be in her late 20's? Same as him, is he playing his age, or is he playing a 30yo unemployed makeup artist? That would make the age difference a tad bit bearable.

I think she’s playing a character that’s her age (25), judging from the third pic. You’re probably right that he’ll play someone in his 30s. There’s nothing legally wrong but it did surprise me to read this.

Though I do like some romance in my dramas, I'm still not comfortable with huge age gaps. I wish he is her mentor and she is the one who will help him rekindle his love for makeup. They can both succeed together as a pair without needing a loveline to push them.

Trainees start as young as 10-12 the current trainees at SM are just 10 years old and they've been training for a few years. She could just be 20-22 by that logic.

Will probably check out the first or two episodes. But if the age gap is visible, I might pass this one. I do hope the issues that will be raised about the idol industry will be handled well.
