First script read for fantasy rom-com drama Welcome

Seo Ji-hoon, L, Shin Ye-eun, Yoon Ye-joo, Kang Hoon

KBS’s Welcome has one of the more interesting premises I’ve heard in a long time. The premise involves a cat who transforms into a man and develops a relationship with a young woman who has a puppy-like personality. L (also known as Kim Myung-soo, Angel’s Last Mission: Love) will headline along with Shin Ye-eun (That Psychometric Guy).

The first script read for Welcome was held this past October, and stills have just been released. PD Ji Byung-hyun (Lovely, Horribly) gave his opening comments: “I believe that in love, even if there’s pain, it’s important to put in all your effort in that moment. I liked the script when I saw it because that part was highlighted. It also really showed the love and comfort that pets provide, which made me really want to take this project.”

L’s character turned into a human boy once when he was a kitten, but he quickly went back to his feline form, and has been a cat ever since then until he comes across Shin Ye-eun’s character. Shin Ye-eun plays a woman who has the bright energy, loving loyalty, and protective instincts of a dog. Seo Ji-hoon (Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency) rounds out the main trio, as a man who runs a family hardware store. He has the a friendly vibe that makes neighbors think of him as family, but a coldness to him as well.

Additionally, the supporting cast members were at the script read. Kang Hoon (Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung) plays the only dog-like friend in Shin Ye-eun’s proximity, as her world is filled with more cat-like individuals. The character that Yoon Ye-joo (Saimdang, Light’s Diary) plays is described as a timid and fearful woman who doesn’t have any social skills but still has her own charms.

KBS Wednesday-Thursday drama Welcome, written by Joo Hwa-mi (My Introverted Boss) and directed by Ji Byung-hyun, will begin on March 25.

lol. I'm with you! I'll give it a try for the cat's sake! If the cat can act better than the humans, I'd expect it to win an award at next year's drama awards! haha

So it's basically Hidamari na Kanojo.

Well, there's the good news! If (perhaps, maybe) this falls flat, you can just watch that film instead!

I'm just wondering what cat-like behaviors we will see from the cat-man. Will he:
Be vain and aloof and always groom himself?
Sleep 18 hours a day?
Stay out all night and get into loud fights with other cats? Or men?
Always walk next to her or just in front of her and trip her up?
Sit in her lap and purr?
Always wake her up at 5:00 am?
Love tuna? Come running at the sound of a can opener?

Lol. I guess all of the above is possible as long as cat-man does not sit on her face while she'a asleep like this cat: https://metro.co.uk/2019/07/23/man-finds-out-that-his-breathing-problems-while-sleeping-are-thanks-to-his-cat-sitting-on-his-face-10440921/

Also...this cat-man drama reminds me of Kimi Wa Petto aka You're My Pet. That drama was awkward 😅.

Joo Ji hoon has Hyena coming out soon. Animal behaviours could be the new thing. The possibilities are endless for new drama titles

Chicken Feet - A cowardly chicken learns to stand up for himself.

Silent Hoot - An owl becomes a human, but has a problem expressing himself, beyond an anguished "Hoot hoot".

Duck Lips - A duck develops self-awareness one day, and becomes terribly self-conscious about his lips.

He will go to pieces when the TV is switched on and Mickey Mouse prances across the screen.

Headbutts instead of back hugs when he falls in love.

Will circle around yelling with pride when he brings food home to share.

In the 2016 film Unleashed, Emma's cat and dog transform into charming human men. I haven't seen the whole thing yet but there was a great visual of her napping with both men (everyone is fully dressed). She's in bed with the cat-man curled around her head and the dog-man draped across her legs.

Sometimes I revert to my true chipmunky self and speak in this high-pitched squeak. Like when I see Hyun Bin smile at me.

There was a secondary storyline in Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter where the daughter is a cat who can turn into a human. Coincidentally, Seo Ji Hoon was also the second lead in that. Maybe it's time for him to get a lead role.

L’s character turned into a human boy once when he was a kitten

I bet this happened on the occasion when he met the female lead when she was younger.

Seriously, kdrama should drop the Destined Soulmates / Childhood Lovers trope by now

I picked up on that too. The way this trope is thrown into every romance is just so lazy, to the extent where it's difficult to name five shows where a couple just meets and doesn't find any special history.

I must still be new at this, because I still love the Destined Soulmates trope. Of course it depends on whether or not the writing is good - not necessarily plausible but just nice.

Aside from cat comments (I have six so it's tempting to say something but I'll refrain...)
I love Seo Ji hoon and have been looking to watch anything else he's in. That is, besides Flower Crew, he was really cheated big time in that drama.

Haha, I might watch a few eps but seriously? A cat transforming into a human? Like, why? And how? So many questions that better be answered. 😂

Is it a coincidence that so many actors go straight into playing an extended character from their previous drama? L was an angel trying to become human to be with the girl he loves in Angel's Last Mission, now he's a cat trying to become human to be with the girl he loves in Welcome. Baek Jin Hee went from a secretary working in an office for a horrible boss (initially) in Jugglers to an assistant working in an office for a horrible boss (initially) in Feel Good To Die. Jung Ryeo Won was a prosecutor in Witch at Court and is a prosecutor in Diary of a Prosecutor. Gong Myung was an office worker in love with the FL in Revolutionary Love and he was also an office worker in love with the FL in Feel Good to Die. I'm sure there's more but these are just a few that were jarringly obvious. Sometimes I question their decision making process or do they not realize they are playing very similar characters just after?

And PD from Lovely, Horribly? Oh, dear. Seo Ji Hoon did such a good turn in Flower Crew, I'd hate to see him go back to playing the unlikeable bully/mean 2nd lead. But all in all, this does sound like something I would really enjoy.
