Lee Min-ho is a commanding presence in The King: Eternal Monarch

I have been waiting for any promotional teasers for The King: Eternal Monarch so I’m excited that we finally have a (very brief) peek at Lee Min-ho (Legend of the Blue Sea) in his first project following his mandatory military service.

The plot of fantasy romance The King: Eternal Monarch traverses dimensions and time. When a demon opens a portal into another world, science-minded monarch Lee Min-ho must find a way to shut that door in order to stave off disaster. On the other side of that door is a modern-day police office, Kim Go-eun (Tune in for Love); her priority is saving lives and protecting the people she loves.

The video starts with Lee Min-ho facing away from the camera, in a large, stately room. The image overlaps and flips, then we see a king’s robes intercut with Lee Min-ho giving us blue steel as we hear in voiceover, “I am Lee Gon, emperor of the Korean empire.”

We see a series of images: a banner emblazoned with a royal flower, a sword with the same flower on its hilt, and a shot of a bamboo forest with sky. We see a blackboard covered in complicated looking equations before we return to that stately room. As the camera zooms in on Lee Min-ho, he turns and we get a full shot of his face. He closes the teaser by stating, “My name is Lee Gon.”

Woo Do-hwan (My Country: The New Age) joins them as second lead, with Kim Kyung-nam (Special Labor Inspector Jo), Jung Eun-chae (The Guest), and Lee Jung-jin (The Liar and His Lover) taking on supporting roles.

The creative team behind the drama are writer Kim Eun-sook (Mr. Sunshine, The Lonely Shining Goblin), with PD Baek Sang-hoon (Moonlight Drawn by Clouds) and PD Jung Ji-hyun (Search Query: WWW) co-directing. The King: Eternal Monarch is scheduled to air in April in SBS’s Friday-Saturday timeslot.

Kim Eun-sook really loves casting the same actors in all her dramas, but go with what works, I guess.

This guy's acting, LEE MiN HO, is so mediocre. Im still wondering why he is so popular. amd whi he gets casted in big projects. Will this drama be the biggest hit of 2020? oh no!

This trailer gives away nothing, not even how Lee Min-ho looks in his king attire! Well done in creating some curiosity!
Even the plot is so unclear. I really hope it will be good.

Not that I have any expertise in how casting works, but I wonder how wise it is to accept second lead roles when you're newly established as a leading man?

Does it make casting directors see you differently? I mean to costar with an icon puts you up against comparisons (and criticism) that you might not get otherwise. Not to mention if his character has animosity with LMO's character that can sometimes carry over with intense fans.

Just wondering is all. I mean, I don't think we'd ever see LMO take on a second lead or any other actors (Ji Chang-wook; Lee Jong-Suk; Seo In-Guk) that right after having broken through at that point in their careers of being the male lead then stepping back to second lead. hmmmm?

I don't consider Woo Do-hwan's role in My Country second lead because that was an ensemble cast (plus, for me, anything with Jang Hyuk places everybody else in the cast behind him). lol

Completely agree with you. Love LMH but I like Woo Do-Hwan too and I think this drama was not a good choice. The reasons: pretty much the same you said, the comparison with LMH will come and even if he make a good perform if his character is not friendly with LMH the fans are going to kill him in social media. On the other hand, make a second lead after been the ML is not good neither in my opinion. The only reason I can find he took into account to make this were the cast and the script. Even if some people say this’s not going to be a hit I disagree, the cast is amazing and they count with the support of the big fandom that have LMH worldwide. The writer has hits as Goblin and The heirs and even the second leads are well known. The budget is huge and the director is well known too. This drama can be a total failure but the possibilities are small, and LMH knew that, that’s the reason why he choose this.

Woo Do-hwan and Kim Kyung-nam in a KES drama with LMH as lead...
whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Okay look *before I get lynched* LMH does nothing for me, and I've just stopped trying to make myself enjoy him after like however many dramas because its just a sad time all around and I continuously end up salty. And I don't really care for KES and think she's overrated as a writer (sorry not sorry).
But I like WDH and KKN A LOT and the latter I have followed since he was a mere extra and is high on my "just give him a dang lead role already" list and I'm just sitting here thinking that I might actually watch if those two had lead but instead they have to act under LMH and that's just ... sad.

Phew! I know the universe is still intact because you and I’ve agreed with many dramas lately, and that’s a bit disquieting for me. I have a strong gut feeling that I might like this one. I, for one, LOVE the way LMH looks here and I’ve never really thought anything about his looks—absolutely no opinion at all. I’ve never seen him act, so this will be a new experience for me. And trust I’ll watch this for Do-Hwan; boy can do no wrong in my acting world. And everyone knows what I think of the writer, also, sorry, not sorry. I learn more Korean and Korean language nuances watching her dramas than anyone else’s. Please, someone with a good command over the Korean language, recap this! Ok, I’m done. Looking forward to April.

9

Actually, I wasn’t done. Lol. My girl, Kim Go-Eun, can also do no wrong—girl has talent dripping from her earlobes—so yeah, REALLY looking forward to April!

8

LOL @ally-le - there's only two big ones, right? Rookie and Circle. The universe isn't that far out of whack? But, yes, it's good to know we stand in stark opposition on the existence of a KES drama as we should.

KES has never had a flop. She's a king maker so whatever she is doing is working for the masses and all of the mainstream audience adores her. If a minority doesn't like her it is just their loss since this drama will be all over social media for years to come just like Goblin, Heirs and DOTS are still classified by the majority of drama viewers as the best k drama's to ever exist. A literal Government study came out with these results so their opinion trumps everything.

That KES knows what she's doing and fake critiquing her for a job she excels at when you have no experience at the job yourself is just being hateful for the sake of being hateful. when I have.... 😂😂😂😂😂 oh boy no please keep going this is highly amusing.

17

I can confirm that @sicarius has no experience at being KES and should therefore never critique KES.

18

Awwww but I've always wanted to be KES, LT! It was on the top of my Christmas List!!!

17

Also can I say how hilarious it is that Sicarius is the one that got attacked when I referred to a KES drama with LMH and KGE as "my own personal hell".
😂😂😂😂😂

17

*tsk tsk* So unnacceptable @leetennant. This is discrimination and I won't stand for it.
@Flight, I demand you direct all farther discourse at LT also. We must be fair about these things.

16

So calling KES an over rated writer when you have no writing experience yourself is not fake criticism but smart wit. Sure keep telling yourself that.

2

How do YOU know I have no writing experience lmaoooo

18

Please refer me to some dramas that you have written that have been major hits or have had an audience. Any audience. I'll be happy to oblige. Since you're so great and smart and witty and what not. I'm sure you're excelling at your writing career and earning millions. You must be flawless.

2

Please refrain from personal abuse and do as your name says and take Flight.

19

So it's not personal abuse when you do it to a public figure? Right I forgot this was all about hypocrisy since the start. Since celebrities are open season for everyone to "critique" irrespective of how many times they prove themselves.

1

Oh yeah man, I am flawless. Just like KES.

But also, I think you should give @leetennant some love as well.
She's getting jealous that I'm getting all the attention. 😘

16

Oh and behold you have obliged! So kind of you.

13

Oh good Lord, why are these trolls always so incoherent? I can't even...

Critiquing someone's writing isn't personal abuse. It's critiquing their writing. Which is... I hasten to add... what comment sections are literally for.

By all means go FANGIRL ON US LOSERS and send us into FAST MOVING TRAFFIC. That's always amusing. But then take a deep breath and move on.

17

God forbid only those who make money can critique things right. Like it's not like that perpetuates the elitist hollywood mindset of the entertainment industry or anything right? Nah... not at all.

19

Critiquing someones writing by saying they are overrated is a critique how? Maybe the definition of critique changed in your world. If we're talking about incoherent then maybe you need to re read your comments. Nothing about it is coherent or logical. It's just bandwagon hate for the sale of hating something. That must mean you're the troll. By the way calling every comment that disagrees with you in a tone that you don't like doesn't make them trolls. That itself is a personal attack so don't sion t your proverbial high horse and pretend to have opinions on things you simply dislike for no reason. How about you take Flight instead.

2

Those who make money at least know how hard it is to make money. There is nothing elitist about it. Holding a proper job let alone a high paying job in the creative field must be easy in your world but it's a struggle in the real world. If you understand how difficult the task is at the very least appreciate them for the effort of being creative. Especially someone who has never had a failure in their career.

1

@flight

"That KES knows what she's doing and fake critiquing her for a job she excels at when you have no experience at the job yourself is just being hateful for the sake of being hateful."

This is not an argument my dear. Everyone can form an opinion on anything without being an expert. Are you a drama writer? If you aren't then what right do you have to say she is a good writer? Because if you use this argument then it goes both ways my friend.

Also, do you not even understand what an opinion is? It doesnt have to be constructive or smart. It's an opinion. Here let me get the dictionary definition as I think you aren't grasping the basic definition of what it means:

o·pin·ion
/əˈpinyən/

a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.

I get you like KES which is fine because that's your opinion (even though you aren't a professional drama writer you are still allowed this opinion). But you need to be mature enough to understand that people will have opposing opinions and respect that not everyone will agree with you.

33

I agree about the opinion part except when it's out right '" I think she's overrated" which is barely an opinion it's borderline hate and definitely not a critique. Calling anyone overrated negates their achievements and hardwork. It's like saying they don't deserve their success.

1

“Holding a proper job let alone a high paying job in the creative field must be easy in your world but it's a struggle in the real world. If you understand how difficult the task is at the very least appreciate them for the effort of being creative. Especially someone who has never had a failure in their career.”

Shame on you good sir.
First of all, do not presume you know me, or my art, my writing, my creative life, my life in general or anything at to do with me at all. You are an unregistered bean and you know nothing about me.
Secondly I know exactly how hard it is to write a well-constructed piece of writing and I happen to be of the opinion that if you must write then you should write with all class, and integrity and respect of your craft that you can possibly muster from your fingertips and you should not just throw words at a screen and ride off the fact that people LIKE you in order to make money.
Just because I have an appreciation for creative skills does NOT MEAN that anyone who practices these is exempt from critique! Nor should they be! How else will they get better!
Honestly I am concerned that she has never had a failure in her career. Why? Because failure breeds strength and improvement in a skill. No failure breeds arrogance and complacency that one can just write whatever and fame will do the rest. I raise you that good Sir, and challenge every creative out there to continuously try and be the best they can ever be, no matter their success or their monetary gain, because there is worth and virtue in storytelling as a craft and art form and if you deny that then you are a hack and a fraud I have no time for you.
I would tell you to go endosolistrate yourself at the earliest possible convenience but that makes me the bad guy.
I will simply bid thee good day, Sir and I pray you have a fulfilling and wholesome life.
Auf wiedersehen.

23

Shame on you good sir to assume she hasn't had any struggles just because none of her work have been failures. The struggles to reinvent or better herself which she has spoken about and assuming complacency when she is anything but complacent.

2

Also KES is totally overrated as a writer

21

You mean just like your comments and so called critiques. Ciao.

1

Why people can't grasp that there will be people in the world who do not love what they love(which is not a bad thing!) is beyond me. I appreciate your opinions Sic, which ARE smart and constructive.

Ok going back to bed. Keep that wit alive 😉

16

Staying on top of the game when people have high expectations from you is the hardest thing for a creative person. There are plenty of people like you who would love to tear her to bits if she ever has a failure. That fear is a great driver for creative people and the fact that she manages to come out on top of that expectations every single time proves how good a writer she is. The Hong Sisters don't get the same respect since they have failed and despite all their failures still can't reinvent themselves but they're trying their hardest. Don't assume complacency when most creative people would not dare to become complacent.

I sorry but there are way better writers out there and compared to them she is definitely overrated.

10

@bcampbell1662, thanks for that link. I’m a totally pushover for Cinderella stories. I’m totally in her demographic of women in their 40’s. I love fast talking. I love cheese. Lol. Sometimes a KGE show is what you need to feel like all is write (right) in the world. She knows what she is and doesn’t make any apologies. I love that she says that what she does isn’t an art, but Is just there to entertain for an hour. I feel much the same about my writings. But there are pieces of writing that are artistic, and make a difference in the world, as well as make you think about your place in it. There are dramas and drama writers that do this and I think that’s what @sicarius and @leetennant are more drawn to and probably respect more. They are both exceptional writers in their own right. Just to educate those not familiar with their writings, I’ll link them. Sic probably has the largest vocabulary of any Beanie here! And LT writes with such conviction. We all have regular jobs but we love kdramas because of the writing (most of us) and are closet writers and hopefully, real writers, someday.

I'm not a fan but I hope that he'll do more movies especially with director Yoo Ha (GANGNAM BLUES). He seems to bring out the best in Lee Min-ho.

I love Go-eun to pieces but it hasn't been a smooth transition for her, from movies to dramas.
I hope her character would be better written here than GOBLIN.

I have a thing for Do-hwan after MY COUNTRY so I'm excited to see him in a Kim Eun-sook drama. She may not be the best writer in dramaland but she does wonders for a growing actor's career.

I think Kim Go Eun has been more or less typecasted in Korean romance.

She hasn't been a success in films either, and I think her Korean fans are concerned because ever since her film Eun Gyo, she hasn't been in any blockbuster movies.

Out of all Chungmuro darlings, I think she and KTR are trying to find the proper place. Though I do think KTR is making more intelligent decisions in picking drama than Kim Go Eun despite it's from the same scriptwriter.

Required fields are marked *

Lately yes, she has been on the rom.com route.
I think she has done well in "Eun Gyo", "Monster", "Coin Locker Girl" to retain her reputation as a talented actress with great range.
"Coin Locker Girl" did better box-office wise in the first 2 weeks than "Eun Gyo's" whole run.

I think the lack of roles for female actresses in their 20s is the problem so when they get a decent offer they take it because they need to keep that momentum even if it's not a role they seek.

Han Suk-kyu was the it actor in Chungmuro before Song Kang-ho, Choi Min-sik, Hwang Jung-min etc but taking a long break cost him his film career imo.

4

Required fields are marked *

You're right about Coin Locker Girl. I forgot that Coin Locker Girl is a success.

I don't think Monster is box office hit though. I don't think it make that much money back. Though Monster is the one that shows her range a bit, but KGE needs vast improvement in dialogue delivery.

KGE is not good with delivering clear and sound dialogue. That's her biggest weakness, I think. Also, she tried to use voice techniques to deliver dialogue. I just think it doesn't work on her.

Which is why I think KGE receives so much criticism on her acting in Goblin is because of her dialogue delivery. She has no problem in emoting, but chemistry acting and dialogue delivery need improvement.

And I think KGE is relatively shy person, which is why she needs to step out of her box to act in chemistry with her costars.

1

Directors can do wonders for actors. I think PD Jin Hyuk suited him in CH and LotBS too. I sometimes wonder what he'll do if someone like Shin Won Ho or Kim Won Seok decide to work with him because he seems like the actor whose potential needs to be tapped and extracted. I hope next time he goes for such a director.

Secret Garden - Watchable but problematic

Heirs - My second real Hatewatch
DOTS - Silly but fun
Goblin - A solid show, I liked it
Mr. Sunshine - Haven't watched

All of his kdramas are been hits with more or less followers but all of them are watch all over the world. If you ask someone that doesn’t know too much about dramas to mention a korean actor is going to say LMH for sure, the guy is the korean star with the biggest fandom worldwide. Why is that?, because he’s handsome?, How many korean actor are handsome and not so famous. Is he the best actor of Korea?, No, but he is quite better than woo Do- hwan that started yesterday in Kdramas. He is the whole package: is hot, is good actor and the guy Is charismatic you can denying it. So, it’s very intelligent to use him as the ML. Just with him the drama has guaranteed the success. How many fans has LMH worldwide, just with that this is gonna be a hit, and it doesn’t matter the writer, the second leads and whatever. Now, how many people know Woo Do-hwan, just the ones that care about him, but even me, a doramaniatic have to see his name to write it because I forget it, just imagine who is beginning in this world, they don’t care about him, so, he’s the correct ML without doubt

It's fine if you don't like WDH acting or even find him ugly (we all have different tastes). It's fine that you love LMH. But attacking anyone like this is not acceptable behavior here. We are above this as Beanies. I honestly don't care that you don't find him attractive or even find him 'flat faced' but you are trying to use this comment as hate and to try and use it to hurt because I had a difference of opinion, which is quite honestly, disgusting. I'm not pressed or butthurt or even hurt by your comment, I quite honestly just pity you.

19

Pffft offense intended? Why would I be offended you don't agree with my opinion? I'm not an immature child to be upset over an opposing opinion, unlike you very clearly are 🤣

You gave me a good laugh my friend, thank you.

But yeah, I laugh as little when I type out offense intended. At least I'm honest about it. LMAO >V<

I don't really know why people complain so much about everything.
If someone don't like Lee min ho as male lead and wo do hwan as second male lead than please don't bother yourself and don't "waste" your time on this go watch something else in which do hwan is male lead but don't spoiled our mode since we are waiting for Lee min ho for so long
Why you guys think that everyone will like something that you like.its really okay to dislike or like someone but it's really hateful to tell everywhere that you hate or dislike someone.
Lee min ho is most famous Korean actor. He has a huge fandom.wtiter, director etc are not follish people that they can select anyone who can't give them success.so plz don't waste your timing in proving others wrong l.If you don't like it than don't watch it it's that simple for me I am so happy that Lee min ho is back so that I can finally watch something as for other actors I don't really care who they are I am okay with everything 🙂✌

It's ok if people don't have anything nice to tell but at the very least don't make fun of others don't tell everywhere how much they dislike someone
It's ok if someone dislike something but if someone really dislike something why just can't they ignore that thing
Now this article is clearly about Lee min ho and his new drama so I ask those haters of him why they came this for just to tell him that they don't like him.is not it ridiculous

10

Let's take a step back and review the comments. I don't think really anyone was saying anything hate filled against LMH. Just because people don't like an actor doesn't make them a hater my friend. Even my comment above had absolutely no hate. I simply prefer WDH over him. I definitely don't hate him as an actor or person, as I'm sure most people here don't either. So please, enlighten me to how mine or others have been hate comments.

Also, like @amy1009 has said, the ones defending LMH have been full of more vitriol and hate than those who aren't fans of LMH. If we are going to condemn those who aren't fans of LMH than don't be a hypocrite and accept those who support him and are also being nasty.

Required fields are marked *

It depends on how you think about hatered
First of all I will tell you that we minoz are not telling you to like Lee min ho you can reread my comment or other minoz comments so plz just don't assume anything like that
Look if you don't like someone and you just have suggestions showing article about him/her what you will do will tell you if you are a hater or not
If you dislike someone you will just skip that article and if you hate someone or you dislike someone sooo much you will open that article and you will dislike or write something bad about that person because you want to hurt that person plus those who are favoring them that's all...
Now if you believe it or not that's all I can tell you
Just think before you say anything may hurt someone badly don't forget suli,go hara, jonghyun etc it's really not necessary to tell someone you dislike that you hate him or dislike him you can just ignore him

2

@noor That's not how it works. How many times... these weren't hate comments. If it's not a hate comment it's not. The comments you are comparing with were really bad, the ones you are getting offended at here aren't. These weren't trying to hurt anyone. If you can't differentiate between those then I don't know what to say to you. And yeah you can ignore negative comments too if you want. Otherwise agree to disagree whatever.

If they were commenting on his personality or disparaging his looks that would be a problem.

The original post says that they find him mediocre. I'm making the leap that they find him a mediocre actor and not mediocre at being a human being.

17

"If I thought any of these Beanies would actually go and put negative comments on his personal instagram or Twitter then I'd be distressed." 😮

Daum and Naver suspended comments on their sites, which I think is cool. And those aren't individual celebrity accounts.

Noor, do you realize how much of a cult fan you sound like? And do you really think that he is reading any of the comments? I think you need to calm down a bit.

3

Miss @windsun33 it's also a personal attack that you are calling me a "cult fan"(but you will say no it's just my opinion 😏)
Let me tell you one thing it's not like that if any other clecbrity will get that much hate for no reason I will speak for him/her and yes Lee min ho is my only favorite actor in this whole world but he is not my crush or I am not dying with love etc he is just my favorite actor.
From the day this drama and cast has been confirmed I am reading so many hateful things about him and I was bearing.I thought maybe now it's going to end,now it's going to end but it actually never ends.(just think how many months have been passed)
Well after I watched first teaser this article pooped up in my suggestions and I made a bad choice to come here because I wanted to read something related to this drama and I accidentally read comments here this was the end of my patient so I made another mistake I thought people will understand what I am talking about and they will stop but if it were that easy won't every thing be okay in this world here people are not even accepting that they are personally attacking and more amazingly I got this honourable title of a "cult fan" from you well thank you Soo much for respecting me so much
Anyways it's a good bye I am not going to waste my time on this anymore
Think whatever you want to think do whatever you want to do if you guys think that only by bringing down someone you can bring up someone else than keep doing it (this is what you call supporting your favorite one anyway) and see what you are going to get from these tactics
Have a good day bye bye take care

2

@skelly absolutely. Or just conversation, but both sides have to be open to it.

2

I don't mind a good, mature debate(emphasis on mature). I will, however, not be roped into "Love my Oppa because I do" situations. I have, on occasion avoided certain debates if I feel it will ruin my drama watching experience. The internet can be a mad place and I'd like to preserve my sanity.

Excellent comment, @stardust. I also think he tends to coast. He was good in Faith and in City Hunter, he was obviously putting some effort into his roles there, but other times, like Personal Taste or Heirs, he just seems to phone it in and rely on the face. I was very disappointed with Heirs, because he begged for that part and it was going to be his swan song as a juvenile lead. I take a wait and see attitude with him.

Exactly about heirs - it was very disappointing for me. Who does such roles after city hunter?! He should have rejected that role since it was not age appropriate (high school/college?!) but he was so enthusiastic about it I thought there was something there. But.. there was nothing and anyone could have done that role I’m sorry.
This one sounds interesting - I think he does well in Saeguk- Let’s Hope he turns up physically and not phone in! Unfortunately It also depends on the script too and with KES it can be a Hit or a miss.

LMH - As beautiful as expressionless. I only liked him in Faith. I've seen most of his dramas, because I keep trying, but I only get a "isn't he beautiful?" in my head and wonder why I can't believe him when acting.
KGE - I have mixed feelings for her. She was the only thing I didn't like in Goblin, but I loved her in Cheese in the trap and Tune in for love.

KKN - All in.

Also, I think there's a real difference between the dramas & actors who are popular in SK vs Internationally. International viewers (such as myself) don't get to see the CFs that actors do or some of the interviews, for example, and therefore don't always have the same opinion about certain actors.

It's the same with dramas, some of them get tiny ratings domestically but are hugely popular here (INAR for example) or ones that were sleeper hits and didn't do much at the time but are totally loved later.

It's all part of what makes discussing this such fun

Sure it's home for all of you to discuss . But do you guys only have opinions about LMH to discuss? There are other articles those don't even get 50 comments. Seems like you guys only wanna discuss something when the topic is LMH. Quite amazing, isn't it? You guys like reading each other comments and having opininions. But there are other articles, open threads and even drama recaps about those I feel like no one wants to say something or doesn't have a opinion. What's that? I wonder.

0

@xoxi4 Uh, most of the comments here are people defending themselves and others against rabid fangirls rather than actually talking about the article. Like I'm doing right now. This kind of thing happens in lots of articles about actors with particularly rabid fanbases. For example, I have noticed that Kim So-hyun's articles can go a bit off the rails as well (and most people here like her). If it weren't for people like you attacking others for their opinions, this thread would be much more chill.

4

@xoxi4 have you been on the fanwall yet?
There are lots of fangirls/fanboys on dramabeans and it is completely respected. You might see some teasing from friends but that's it.
Right now everday, if you visit, you will probably see something about Shin Sung-rok and Xiao Zhan.
Also, lots of love for Lee Jae Wook he is a new one and many more including singers.
Kim Young Kwan in a three piece suit, the appeal of ears that stick out and all that is Kim Jae Wook has also had some moments big and small in the sun.
Why dont you come and join us? Post your favorite pic or video of Lee Min Ho. We also have a music theme going post your favorite song from one his drama's OST. Other fans will comment.
But on these post and definitely recaps opinions come out. Especially on recaps. Some squee and others want to discuss in detail the story and acting.

4

@xoxi4 What they said. Also did you not notice the many comments in favour of LMH who didn't take as much offense as you? I for one liked him in most of his dramas (except his character in Heirs who I hated, but it had to do with the character not actor)
I don't think his acting is bad but I do think he could do better. I would say I am mostly indifferent about him or he is not my favorite actor. Would that automatically mean hate? No cause I don't hate him either cause disinterest does not mean hate. People would say worse things if they did indeed hate him.

So go ahead and say what you like about him, what you think of his acting, etc no one would stop you.

1

Why aren't you fangirling on your bias instead of attacking and questioning others for their opinions?

Lee Min-ho has always been popular on DB. JB who created this site was one of his biggest fan. Those who were on the fence or simply don't see him as a good enough actor were also allowed to have an opinion.

This is obviously not a site for rabid fangirls like you who takes offense at every comments that doesn't praise your bias.

Find a site that suit your taste or fangirl over Lee Min-ho to your heart's content.

I understand the hype behind all KES dramas and also why they do well. But I hardly love them. I do watch and enjoy them but I find myself often critical of her style. She has improved progressively but it’s her trademark way of handling scenes and lines that makes me roll my eyes - all - the - time. Plus I Will always bear a grudge to her for coming up with Heirs which is a horrible excuse for a drama that got me to watch 20 episodes of Practically nothing and Ugly sweaters , and yet not missed a single episode. It was superbly ridiculous.

That being said, I like LMH, despite all the extremes of oppa-cant-do-no-wrong fan girls and I-hate-him anti-fans, in my honest opinion, he’s one of those who are blessed with both the looks and the acting chops - plus what we call screen presence, I can always recall the moment I thought to myself while watching him on BOF with that horrible hair : Oh my, who’s this dude. He’s gonna breakout and make it big.

He did and I think a lot of us can see why. It’s not just looks. I’m just sometimes disappointed that he doesn’t challenge himself with roles and takes the high profile ones that are safe and easy. Although most of the time I’m happy that he tries to make those characters a little more than they are on paper but it’s not helping any advance as an actor. My grips is maybe he just wants to remain a pretty face idol, i don’t judge but it’s gets boring ..Perhaps when he’s older he can be more adventurous. Let’s hope this one is better both on paper and in acting! The teaser is well done , what do you expect. KES and her theatrics dramatic moments - it’s a signature.

I think LMH has potential to be better actor, but he ends up going backward instead forward.

Which is unfortunate, because he does have potential to be a good actor and he wasted it by choosing The Heirs and so forth.

His acting vastly deteriorates after City Hunter. It's quite a shame. Him and his bff, Jung Il Woo. Both of them make terrible choices and wasting talents.

And not to say anything, didn't LMH try to get into Hollywood? Not with this type of choices. He ain't getting into Chungmuro much either.

Even Bae Doona is not that successful. At least not in the way of winning awards or being in blockbuster Hollywood movies.

That's why I said, if LMH cannot even get into Chungmuro, he ain't gonna breaking into Hollywood either. And LMH tried to get into Chungmuro by acting in Gangnam Blue, but after that, blop. Nothing.

Even Sodam's costar, Choi Wooshik, has better chance than him. And Choi Wooshik is the one who won Best New Actor against him in Blue Dragon Awards. Now Choi Wooshik is going to be in A24's movie.

Required fields are marked *

Hmmm. Let's dissect this comment section here. There are a lot of people claiming that all of us here are haters simply because we aren't worshipping at LMH's feet.

Most comments are simply along the lines of 'he's an ok actor but not the best' or 'I'm not the biggest fan of LMH'. There is absolutely nothing hateful about these comments. Just like how people are allowed to love LMH, people are also allowed to not love him. I personally find him just ok as an actor but I definitely think there are better actors out there. I also think he is much better than other actors out there. In the end I just find him meh as an actor. I'm allowed this opinion and despite what some of you out there think, this is not hate. And don't pretend to be high and mighty and above board because you support LMH. Some of the responses defending LMH have been more hate filled than those against him.

Let's keep things civil. Everyone here is allowed their opinion to either love or not love LMH. Let's be mature and accept that everyone has an opinion and stop trying to censor or shut down those who has a different opinion. If you love LMH then that's awesome! The great thing about DB is people come from all walks of life and from all over the world but that also means many different opinions. Being part of DB (and being mature in general) means you need to respect others opinions. Peace and comfort my friends ❤

What you think maturity is?
Firstly no one is saying that it's really bad to not like someone.
Sis if you call that thing maturity that you should tell everyone that you don't like someone
Most of other actors fans like few fans of do hwan you can see there or anywhere they mostly talk why do hwan is second lead lee min ho don't deserve to be first lead etc you can read these comments there or mydramalist etc you really think it's fine or not hatered?
When sulli, gohara etc was being bullied than also there was people who were talking about that it's there right to have personal opinions
I tell you people don't have rights to decide about other person if he is good, bad,he is deserving or not etc because those thing are not really little things that some people think are their opinions
Tell me how do you feel when someone talk bad about you and you can't stop them don't you feel stressed about that?
Just like what you like and follow it Don't follow what you dislike it can't give you or anyone else happiness
If you like other actors just praise them because it's your choice your opinion and we really don't have any problem with that but don't try to compare your favorite one to others and don't waste your energy in proving your favorite one more capable
We just want to enjoy this drama because it's been so long that Lee min ho was away from screen let us enjoy we don't want any fights or stress.life is already so busy and full of stress if you like someone just support him and let us support our favorite.if you don't like lee min ho or this drama than don't watch it there are so many other dramas to watch
Watch what makes you happy for us this drama is only thing that can make us happy 🙂

I'm not @trinpie but I'll just say one thing about this comment.
This is a place for discussion and comments about dramas. A lot of fans seem to want to ignore that and try to turn this place into a fan site. We like disliking things sometimes! We like to like and dislike them at the same time! So, no, we won't stop talking about it just because some people, who call themselves fans, get confused, and think ordinary opinions about anything are personal attacks at writers, actors or at their fans.

Here is the thing about art and artists - they get criticized, by people from all walks of life. It comes with territory. Most artists are aware of it and some (or many) even take constructive feedback and improve.
As long as it’s not a ‘personal’ attack or it doesn’t invade his/her private life or doesn’t spread malicious rumors - everything is seen as criticism and it is to be expected. By no stretch any of these comments are bullying.
Am happy for his fans that he is returning after a long time and am sure it’s exciting times. I want them to spend more time being happy and fangirling while accepting the fact that not everyone loves him the same way as his fans do.

I just can't find it in myself to be passionate enough about Lee Min-ho to jump into the fray of some of these threads. That said, I'm saddened by the incivility I'm seeing more and more on DB, and that some take a difference of opinion as a personal attack. Differing opinions are just that, nothing more. However, calling out an individual beanie with names and insults, that's counter to the spirit that DB has always cultivated.

However, if anyone were to say, insult Lee Min-ki, I might have to go all fan-girl on you losers. (Just kidding. I would talk smack about you behind your back.)

Seriously, some of the comments we've seen on DB lately are so crazy and sad. At least we've gotten some great meme material out of them, though...?

Also, when I do on rare instances see people insult my favorite actor, I don't even have the energy or drive to respond usually. He's talented whether playing a spare tire or a cat or a serial killer and if you don't see that then that's fine. But also sad for you. :(

But I'm a lazy fan who has gotten around to watching everything.
In fact I've only watched 3 things and an episode of RM.
So I cant talk smack, I dont know that he was good in everything.
I will bet he looked good in everything.

Gong Yoo for me as a person as well as an actor is applaudable, I have to say that especially for his choice of social movies. To name them: Silenced and Kim Ji Young, born 1982.
I would dare actors to take such movies. The actual change that silenced bought to South Korean law can never be undermined. That alone for me makes him a great person. Also the entire production team and cast of the movie.

seriously people should take a walk. I always feel those who bother to criticise have some inherent interest on the star having seen their works. If I totally dislike one, I wouldn’t even bother.
And you just have to accept that one mans poison is another’s tea. Everyone is entitled to a different opinion.

My softie is Binnie now and I have a friend who tells me the whole world is nuts as she doesn’t get him, she finds him rather fat in CLOY (Fat!!!) and totally non age appropriate for the role (I.e too old) - but hey good for her, plus Oppa won’t die without another additional fan (he doesn’t care too). She has Super Long criticism about the drama but watched it anyway. My favourite dig to her is : if you hate it stop watching! But you are still watching ... Beware one day the dimples will get you. The dimples are the secret you know Hahahahaha
She swears it will never happen and she hates those dimples.
That’s the most shallow hate remark I say to her- the dimples are innocent! Lol

Excitement aside,

I won't generalize, but, maybe it's because this is a relatively small audience/community, but this comment section has a serious case of bias and in-denial and users here will bandwagon under the veneer of having an opinion. It's almost pretentious, but not quite.

I usually don't comment, and would normally just stick to reading the drama recaps, but this upcoming drama piqued my interest in public opinion but yikes, I'll just back-pedal right out of this one.

Not gonna lie, but this has been the article with the craziest comments here on DB this year. I enjoyed reading some comments while other comments gave me headache. I shouldn't be surprised since LMH + KES = crazy discussion not just from people on DB, but also outside the community.

I'll probably watch this one but I don't know if I'll like it or not because I only liked 3 of her dramas while I dislike the others and it was more of how the characters are written, because synopsis-wise, her dramas all sound fun. I am hoping this one would be good and get the ratings it truly deserves since I really like some of the cast and when this premise was done right, this one could be an enjoyable drama.

Also, liking and disliking dramas are normal and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you don't personally attack the writers, directors, the staff, and/or the actors.

I was attacked—racially, too—in the comments of my post on my Fan Wall a few weeks back, sent an email to Dramabeans about it to ask the staff to check it out, but haven’t heard anything back.
I understand that the staff probably receives millions of emails a day regarding a whole lot of things, but I think issues like these need to be made a priority and need to be followed up upon.

I don't understand why all the comments of people bantering between each other are not blocked or deleted. They reflect more of a personal battle that veered off-topic of the drama (The King: The Eternal ...) I don't see the benefit of those comments -- unless it's just that they are getting attention. Anyway, the story of this drama does not appeal to me (evil entity interfering in human affairs, dangerous portals etc. ... At least in Faith, the portal did not reflect an evil entity's doing) but I will view it because Lee Min Ho is portraying the character -- The King ...plus I like all of the actors in this drama. I hope this will be a very successful come back for Lee Min Ho. I hope everybody likes the drama & gleams something good from it no matter who their favorite actor/s are & no matter what preconceived impressions that they may have about the ,writer, producer, etc. Have a great day everybody. Thank you for your progress report on THE KING: ETERNAL MONARCH (literal title: THE KING: MONARCH OF ETERNITY; previous working title: THE KING: ETERNAL RULER). I've been anticipating Lee Min-ho's comeback from military service, especially since the announcement that Woo Do-hwan had joined the cast. WDH's swashbuckling performance in MY COUNTRY guarantees a dashing emperor's bodyguard. Is it too much to hope for a cameo by the Emperor's former great big Woodalchi warrior, Deok-man (Yoon Kyun-sang)?

I'm looking forward to seeing Kim Kyung-nam, who turned in a memorable performance as Jang Ki-yong's tormented hyung in COME HERE AND HUG ME. His character arc had all of the live-watching Beanies jumping up and down. Until I took another gander at AsianWiki, I didn't realize that he had been in FAITH, too. (Still one of my favorite Kdramas, with an utterly cracktastic OST.)

After her turn as the tough-as-nails detective up against implacable evil spirit Park Il-do in GUEST, it will be interesting to see which character Jung Eun-chae plays in this drama. In my book, she set the bar high for badass female cops.

I am with you @pakalanapikake. LMH, WDH and KKN together, what’s not to like. This will be my first Kim Go-eun drama.

O/T and maybe one degree of separation. I enjoyed LMH’s last drama before doing his military stint THE LEGEND OF THE BLUE SEA (average Nielsen rating: 17.6%). I saw a report that LEGEND’s mermaid Jun Jin-hyun is appearing in the finale of KINGDOM 2 and it is her first sageuk. I really would like to rewatch KINGDOM before the second season begins but I don’t know how I can work it in. My viewing card is getting seriously full.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo,
Yes, I enjoyed LEGEND OF THE BLUE SEA, too, especially the Joseon timeline. I would have liked to have seen more of it. It will be fun to see Lee Min-ho playing an emperor after portraying Choi Young in FAITH, which is probably my favorite role of his to date. The anachronistic sight of him carrying a clear plastic police riot shield while wearing Goryeo armor cracked me up.

Speaking of ancient timelines, I thoroughly enjoyed Kim Min-jae, Kim So-hyun, and Kim Byung-chul (in my introduction to his work) in the Goryeo portion of Kim Eun-sook's GOBLIN -- along with Gong Yoo in his first sageuk role, IIRC. The scenes start within the first 5 minutes or so of episode 1 and are well worth watching. It's an emotionally moving and action-packed 15 minutes or so. Gong Yoo is fantastic in battle as General Kim Shin, a mortal mushin [god of war] who becomes a protective deity. The drama went through various name changes before it premiered. Alas, GOBLIN didn't help me understand what was really going on with Kim Shin. GUARDIAN: THE LONELY AND GREAT GOD (as opposed to the LONELY SHINING GOBLIN here on DB) would have given me more of a clue as to his character arc. The ending would have felt more apropos, too.

Methinks I'd read that Gianna Jun was set to appear in KINGDOM 2. It will be interesting to see which character she plays. -- I sneaked in a rewatch of KINGDOM in December so I could refresh my memory of it during the Bean Count. I was already up to my eyeballs in sageuks when it originally aired, and wasn't able to give it the attention it deserved back then. It was well worth re-watching. I may have to squeeze in another viewing before season 2 premieres in a scant 10 days. Yikes! We're about to be ambushed by zombies. My dance card is getting full, too. But my memory needs all the help it can get. ;-)

Aside: I'm about to watch ep. 10 of MEMORIES OF THE ALHAMBRA, which I'm enjoying much more now than if I'd tried to live-watch it when it premiered in December 2018. Have started NOBODY KNOWS, WHEN THE WEATHER IS GOOD / I'LL FIND YOU ON A BEAUTIFUL DAY, and HYENA after finishing STOVE LEAGUE, CRASH LANDING ON YOU, and ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIM 2. I'm almost half-way through 50 episodes of CRUEL PALACE: WAR OF THE FLOWERS, but have had to take a break from the incessant machinations of King Injo's horrid concubine Kim Soyong and her awful adoptive father Kim Ja-jeom, played to utter perfection by the great Jung Sung-mo. They're scheming to dethrone Queen Jangryeol Jo and Sohyeon Seja, and it makes my blood boil. Lee Deok-hwa is terrific as Injo, and so are the production values. Many thanks to @kiara for turning me on to the scenes of Injo's kowtowing to Manchu Emperor Hong Taiji after Joseon was defeated in the Second Manchu Invasion in 1636. They are spell-bindingly epic.

your comment is not related to this article topic at all,i wonder is it to announce to all users here that you're a db veteran and an "elite" so nobody can question your constant negative attitude?

also, idk what's going on with db nowadays,if you dont like something sure you can say it but why spend time on something you hate instead of focusing and spreading good words about something you love? i love good debates and discussions but then it's hard to voice out your opinion here especially if you're new because all the veterans here will come ganging up on you for having different opinion with one of them.

most of us are having a hard time with real life and the kdramas are one of the greatest escape and like i said,i love a good discussion but then there will always someone that will act so elitist and be a Downer Nancy. it's why i choose to be a silent reader and refuse to post anything because of the veterans gang here.

I like LMH's face but his acting is just so-so. :D Well I have mix feelings about KES dramas, usually the 1st half is enjoyable then the rest is just when u realize there is nothing meaningful going on in the dramas. :D Sorry but KES dramas are just not my type of dramas. I always end up dropping out halfway. Shame on me..

I'll definitely watch this, right now mostly because of Woo Do Hwan and my Mad Dog abstinence, but I have to admit I don't get the frequent feeling of irritation I often do when I see Lee Min Ho. Military has done him good!

Regarding Kim Eun-sook, I find it best to watch her dramas with my wits temporarily shelved. People shine in various aspects and her talent lies in the romance, not the plot.

This comment section is funny. It’s mostly about how Woo Do Hwan is better yet is second lead. Most comments are along the lines of “Lee min ho is mediocre. Why is Woo do hwan second lead?” It’s also not ok for Lee min ho’s fans to stand up for him. “Everyone is entitled to their opinion so instead of wasting your time defending your oppa, why don’t you just spazz about him?” How about instead of bashing another actor while expressing your love for Woo Do Hwan, just express your love for Woo Do Hwan? Most of you spend more time bashing Lee min ho versus showing your support for Woo Do Hwan. And no Lee Min Ho fan, just out of nowhere, ever compared Woo Do Hwan to him, saying Lee Min Ho is better. Geez, why can’t you people just love a bromance? Why do you have to ruin the fun in two wonderful actors coming together as a team? Thanks to this drama, and thanks to Lee Min Ho, I discovered Woo Do Hwan and am certainly intrigued by him. And many fans all over the world will feel the same. While many of you think it’s not a smart choice for Woo Do Hwan to take second lead (due to comparison with another actor who has a bigger fanbase and after already being the lead in other dramas), it can potentially be the best decision he made to take his career to the next level. Smart choice because he needs to cross over with famous actors/writers to gain more recognition. Will he bring buzz to the drama the way Lee Min Ho does? Oh, I don’t dare answer that question because I will get torn apart for using the “popularity” card. It’s simply the truth so just let Woo do hwan ride along. Stop with the comparison and just enjoy the show. No one is out here bashing him for standing next to Lee Min Ho. Aren’t you a hypocrite? You’re the one bashing Lee Min Ho for being “mediocre” next to him. And you wonder why Lee Min Ho fans won’t support him. You were out to get their oppa first. If you have confidence woo do hwan will steal the show, then more power to him! He’ll steal the show and win many hearts across the world! He’ll be considered for male leads only from now on and get love calls from top writers and collaborate with top actresses. Why are you complaining?

Maybe one thing that gets lost here is tone. I cant talk for all Beanies but I'd guess most of it is in fun. 🤷‍♀️
Like I LOVE Gong Yoo. But many on her LOVE Lee Jae Wook.
If they were cast together and the Lee Jae Wook Beanies came out to proclaim how wonderful he is (btw I think he is too, just not Gong Yoo level😉) and that they hope he steals all the scenes I'm not going to start calling them salty haters.
Or that they need to wait their turn because their Oppa (😖) hasnt even stopped growing yet.
I'd say bring it. Let's see if he can keep up, especially to Gong Yoo's dinosaur visuals.

Totally on the same page as you! I guess it is the wording that may come off as offensive. I think it’s absolutely ok to proclaim your love but it’s another thing when you try to bring someone down while doing it. It’s similar to saying Gong Yoo is so mediocre and doesn’t deserve the lead. Plenty of Gong Yoo fans would not be happy hearing this, am I correct? Now, of course, I wouldn’t go bashing the other party to defend my favorite, but I can see why someone would.

I’m definitely saying bring it on. Like I said, if WDH steals the show than it’s wonderful for him. I won’t be complaining, I’ll be cheering him on. I don’t see any loss in actors challenging each other. And I’m certainly all in for a good bromance. I also have a big heart and can welcome numerous actors in hahaha.
