Hmmm.... I am no expert in job references, but an acquaintance once put me down as a reference for job application because I can speak of their good qualities and integrity. Perhaps that will work?

Maybe any former colleagues? Those who were in the same position or level as you? Anyone you worked fairly closely with?

Hi @korfan
I believe @edgarpordwed and @msrabbit are right. Friends and people in other areas of our lives can also vouch for us. If you are active in clubs or religious groups, and more so if you've held posts of some responsibility, the leaders there might be able to be your referees. I believe that it's mainly the character of the prospective employees, that employers want to check on.

A more time consuming alternative, is to just take up a less demanding job first, like a temporary position that does not require much in the way of references. After some time in this job, that employer can act as your reference for the more permanent job of your choice.

All the best!! 😃

Hey korfan,
Maybe a person at the company or institution who knew your former reference(s) could do a little research and provide a letter or be willing to be contacted on your behalf? I would think someone would be willing to do that considering the circumstances. Best wishes for your employment-seeking ventures!

Do you really need a reference? Does the company actually ask for any? I have never listed any on any resume. And when I was in a position to make hire decisions I never paid any attention to references.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Hey korfan, it depends on what you need the references for. When I used to work in management (I'm in the UK) we would only check the references to make sure that someone had actually worked in the job & for the amount of time that they claimed on their CV. That means that anybody in your previous job (the HR department for example of you have one of those) could be your reference. They wouldn't have to vouch for you personally.

Not sure where you're located, and it could be very different where you are, but you could give anybody who would have access to the previous employment records as a reference. 12 years is a long time of course, and companies might not have kept that on file for that long but it could be worth a try.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Have you done any volunteering? Many times references can be gleaned from the place you volunteered. I went back to work at the age of 55 (I'd been a housewife previously), and didn't have a hard time getting a job--but I was willing to even work part-time. Many times employers like older workers because they have life experiences and are more stable.

Happy weekend Beanies!

My parents and two godchildren are taking turns getting injured or falling ill, and I have been busy trying to take care of my parents and their responsibilities when it comes to household chores and taking care of the godchildren for a few weeks now. January at least had some fun activities that required preparation and offered a distraction. February on the contrary, looked like nothing but a never ending circle of the previous weeks, so last week I wished for a February challenge to spice things up.

So much of my time and energy is devoted to my loved ones nowadays, that I barely have any left on evenings and weekends to focus on my personal stuff like K-dramas and *ahem* job-hunting among other things. I even got small food poisoning this week, probably as a sign of exhaustion.

For this reason I am participating in the Love, February challenge. To remind myself every day of the things I loved that particular day. To distract myself for a few minutes with an attempt at poetry. To create small happiness for myself, in order to survive this slump. To draw strength from other Beanie entries and comments.

And it is working.

I cleared out my pile of job applications this week and I am determined to submit them one by one. From next week onwards I want to make more time to work my way through them, I’ll even sacrifice Saturdays if I have to.

This spark is what I have been looking for ever since I got fired back in October, and I am willing to get behind on K-dramas and recaps to use them as job application submit rewards to keep this spark alive. Except for Coffee Prince. My friend and I breezed through the first two episodes last weekend, and I need to keep hearing Mr. Voice for inner strength. 😊

Glad to see you busy and purposeful as always @turtuallysarcastic. I'm trying to remain that way too, what with the Novel Corona Virus causing disruption in planned activities.

Remembering and being thankful for the experiences of everyday is a great idea... whether February or not!!!

Have fun with Coffee Prince! 😆

Anyeong everyone how have you been?
It's always good to be here ready everyone's posts (comments)
Now in Dramaland there's so many dramas and I am having it difficult to keep up.
I just have one question, In Cdramaland there's no such thing as MAIN LEAD? How can four 42min episodes only be about the supporting characters with only glimpses of the main lead that are even less than 30secs? 8f someone just joined you and wants to know the main protagonist, what would you say?.

Hi @martinjsimwaba Which cdrama are you referring to?

As far as I know, there are usually main leads and they do appear an awful lot in the episodes. You can check the show in MyDramaList, and under 'Cast and Characters' first few will include the main leads/roles, so you'll know who they are. Hope that helps. 😁

Hello @growingbeautifully
I watched THE SPIRIT OF THE SWORD and I tell you, in 10 episodes NICHOLAS TSE and GILLIAN CHUN would only appear in 4 episode. And in the recent episodes of EVER NIGHT Ning Que would only appear briefly and less than 30 secs at that.

I remember some complaints about a c-drama that did that, and I guess it's one that's airing, but I don't know which one, since I wasn't watching it. And I watch a lot of c-dramas!
Just finished The Golden Eyes and it was really good, but you have to pay close attention to the details. Other than that one, I mostly watch xianxia/wuxia dramas.

There is a cast billing: starring, special starring, also starring...

Starring is usually, but not always, the main or 1st lead. Cdrama productions have been known to take screen time from 1st lead and give it to 2nd or 3rd lead. Sometimes money is involved.

Special starring can be billed alongside starring, or before also starring but still has limited screen time.

Currently streaming cdrama Forward Forever is based on a manga that has 2 male leads. Haung Zi Tao (aka Tao formerly of Exo) is "starring". Jackson Yi (TFBoys) is "special starring". They are billed side-by-side at the head of the cast. Jackson Yi doesn't have even 1/2 the cumulative screen time as Tao through ep 8. It looks like a secondary (or lower ranked) female character might have been promoted to 1st female lead even though she isn't billed that way.

So that's just the way it is in Cdramaland?

Required fields are marked *

Yup. Sometimes feels like bait-and-switch. Production teams have to bow down to investors, clout, and/or agency demands.

1
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

And quite often heavy censorship.

1

A drama production must receive a permit before filming begins. So censorship is a given and every production team starts self-censoring the material even before applying for the permit.

Problem arises when censors change the rules to apply to all dramas that haven't aired, or, when one or more of the main cast members have a huge scandal.

I guess I just have to accept them as they come. Thanks @sni

I do the same thing! Most of the time it's because I don't want it to be over, but sometimes, the main characters have hooked up and I can the happy ending coming and I'm done. Korean Odyssey would be an example of the 1st, and What's Wrong with Secretary Kim is definitely an ex of the 2nd. I was so annoyed with those two by ep 15 lol!

There are many fan theories on how CLOY will end. Many are hoping for a “happy” ending. But the premise tells of a sad ending. Since this is a pure fantasy story line, anything is possible. Some believe OTP will wind up in Switzerland. Some believe JH will defect to SK despite the harsh ramifications to his family. Others think there will be a sad parting of the couple. The worst idea is that the entire story is just Seri’s dream.

It would take a monumental plot twist to make that work. But I noticed JH and Seri have had the most truthful conversations when they are drunk/drinking; acting like an old couple. The last one where JH wanted to be married with twins struck me as did Seri’s reaction that she was too sober to hear that. Is there a hidden truth to the story elements of the series?

Could the entire series unravel to a “happy sad” ending to find that JH and Seri are actually already a married couple? She has just given birth to twins, but is suffering the burdens in her marriage. They are a poor couple in an old neighborhood. JH is away for a months at a time as a low wage laborer at construction jobs. As the youngest daughter, Seri has had the burden of taking care of her retired, sickly parents. She hates her brothers for not helping her out, financially or as a caregiver. Her mean landlord is going to increase the rent on their shabby apartment because there are now “two more occupants.” The NK village women are her neighbors. The Ducklings are neighborhood businessmen scratching out an existence. Her whole world is crashing around her; she wants to escape her fate.

No one is around to give her support. She uses the people she knows to dream about being a rich, independent woman which then manifests into a debilitating postpartum psychosis (in the form of the CLOY story). In the end, Seri has an emotional “crash” in the arms of JH, who vows to be a better husband and provider by moving them to the countryside, away from all their problems (to find their own neutral quiet place like Switzerland in her dream).

😆 What a thoroughly well thought out possible/alternative CLOY reality!!! CLOY is the only kdrama I'm following... kind of.

It will really be interesting what the writers will be giving us for the ending. A surprising thought just occurred to me - how about a shocking reverse defection. Through his father's influence, JH manages to get Se Ri back to NK safely to be reunited with her ahjumma friends, into whose lives she starts to inject some 'capitalistic spice' with new business ideas. They start their own enterprise and become super rich ahjummas with a lot of 'power'. Seung Jun ends up helping her with Seo Dan by his side. JH goes back to his great love, the piano, and wins accolades for NK. With her new found power, Seri gets special permission to travel back and forth between the 2 Koreas and runs her family's business as well, which her brothers make a hash out of. - Happy Ending! - 😂

I'd rather have my sad ending.

Hi Everyone! Happy OT and show watching, and Happy Keeping Healthy in these times of health concerns with the 2019 Novel Corona Virus (2019-nCoV) 'on the prowl'. At this stage, we in Singapore, find that authorities have raised the level of the health alert, which means stopping gatherings and increasing surveillance.

My life is inevitably somewhat disrupted. Instead of watching the usual shows and getting on with my usual preparations for time with children and adults in little retreats/courses,.... I've been sucked down the rabbit hole of vlogs and news on the 2019-nCoV.

I've suddenly become a fan of several v-loggers on YT and their take on what they see, hear and experience in China. I've even gained a sudden interest in epidemiology and detailed explanations of symptoms and what these signify is happening in our bodies.

And now, in terms of my work and volunteer time, I find that I'm to start working only from home (I do spend 2 days a week working from home now, but it's going to be all 5-7 days!) and my volunteer 'work' meetings and retreats are being cancelled. Sooo.... I guess I need to try to continue life as normally as possible, but it's going to take a whole lot of self-discipline to stay home and not be watching all those vlogs instead of working!!! Heh! 😅

I really feel for the affected people of China. My situation is nowhere near horrible, but just the little disruptions, the pockets of panic (crazy folks are already emptying shelves in panic buying) and bits of paranoia are already so disruptive. It's a 100 times worse in China.

I take my hat off to all those ordinary people, doing their best to just get on with life, with calm and at peace, and major kudos to all those in the 'line of fire', dealing with the virus and it's fallout at so many levels. The losses in terms of lives and livelihoods are going to be phenomenal and global. This is really going to be a difficult experience for so many people to be able to go through and rise from, but I believe they/we will do it.

Please pray with me for all the persons battling the virus and all its consequences; may we stand together as a community of the Earth and grow from this experience. Jiayou China! and to all of us Fighting!!

It's Friday my beautiful, lovely amazing fellow Beanies!

Some Day or One Day Been watching this drama with my mom and lil' brother and we all absolutely love this. I figured I would with all the Beanies who have been raving about it. And it also has GregO in it, one of my lovely consorts. But the story is very interesting, well written and it's fun to throw theories out between my family (which we have been pretty spot on so far). And the acting is perfect. It's a crime GregO has not had a main role until now!! The romance is both beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time ❤️💔

Because of Meeting You I watched this because of Deng Lun. He is so wonderful in this drama. A wonderful partner and daddy 😍 I need a Deng Lun in my life. This is the cdrama version of Jang Bori which I had also watched a few years ago. From what I remember this one is pretty close to the kdrama version. It's the same mix of frustrating yet addictive makjang plots. I hate the adopted mom.

But now I don't know what to watch! I really want to watch Find Yourself because noona romances are my catnip, but I want to wait until it's closer to being done. But other then that I don't know what else to watch 😭 Life is hard!

Because of Meeting You - hmm, I don't know where to watch this one. I'll look around.
Happy Friday!

So many deep / serious comments this week.

I just want to say:

1: If you want virus news, these are the best sources I've found:
https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6
and
https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-02-07-20-intl-hnk/index.html
Note the the URL for the CNN one changes every day.

2: It seems like subs for some shows are unusually slow. Did the subbers fall behind over Chinese New Year? Are they sick? Both????

3: It seems that one of the main early symptoms of the virus is a slight cough. With my acid reflux & asthma, "slight cough" is my specialty. If the virus gets common in my area, I might as well stay home and self-isolate just because if I go out in public people will jump to the wrong conclusion. At least I'll have Dramabeans & kdramas to help me pass the time.

Five types
The OCN action thriller, the slice-of-life, the crime corruption story, the romcom with all that annoying gender shit, and the sageuk with all of the annoying gender shit.
This year has so far been really generic, even the good dramas are just standard ones. They're dull as dirt in how standard they are and a lot of them are quite regressive too.

In that respect I tend to agree. Even the ones I am watching are pretty heavy on all the usual tropes and cliches. Though I am watching several, most are casual - only two on my Must See list - CLOY and Tell Me What You Saw.

Maybe because I've only been watching for a a few years but I still find a lot of fun and happiness from watching dramas. Of course I wasnt exactly burnt out on western tv it's just that when I tried k dramas I found I really liked the format of them.

I like slice of life, so I'm happy. I'm also waiting for something good and out of the ordinary.

I think kdrama's always been this way. You may be suffering from some kdrama overdose LT!

I've noticed K-dramas tend to give us three *GREAT* dramas per year. We can all name them and would largely agree on the titles. Then there's a longer list of second-tier dramas. This year the second and third tier dramas are just dreadful. Most shocking in is how Netflix is pouring money into badly misguided dramas. Abyss? Arthdale? Vagabond? Well, at least we had the original and clever 'Psychopath diary' which has the unusual distinction of getting better the longer it ran

Made a special trip to the store today to stock up on items that met both the following criteria:

1: I might need them if The Virus comes to my area and I decide to self-isolate.
2: They will last long enough so I'll be able to use them eventually anyway.

That includes LOTS of things, not just food, but the reason I'm writing this is to hint to everybody that it might be a good time to stock up. Items on my list that some people might overlook include:
Toothpaste
Toilet paper
Cat food
Cat litter

Store had normal amounts of all those (and food) but was sold out of hand sanitizers. Guess other people think differently.

There is currently a mad rush on TP in Hong Kong. It's insane.

Supermart shelves are emptying out of rice, oil, noodles, canned food, disinfectant, sanitizers, paper products ... partially less bottled water ie the inexpensive ones are bought up ... However I don't think we need to overbuy. If everyone thinks the same way, there will be insufficient for some who really need some essentials.

Yes. Where you are I'd expect people to be getting worried, but here in California it seems pretty normal except for me and whoever bought the hand sanitizer.

FWIW, I normally keep at least enough food and water for at least a week, in case of earthquakes. But due to special (and non-virus-related) reasons I currently have enough food for about 3 months. So as long as they keep the water & electricity I'm in good shape.

I recall in the 1970s the US had a toilet paper emergency bad enough to require government intervention. All because a late night comic had made a joke that caused viewers to panic and stockpile hoards of toilet paper, emptying out store shelves across the country.

It was a theme of the month—because it was criminally underrated and no one watched it! Actually, I wrote one and then @javinne and I wrote one on Best Friends. So here are two essays for you!

I *literally* stumbled on this drama this week. I dropped the tablet I was watching a K-drama on and when I picked it up that was the drama that was on-screen.
