Premiere Watch: My Holo Love

Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Romance

The latest K-drama Netflix original, My Holo Love, features Yoon Hyun-min playing both sides of a love triangle with Go Sung-hee. Our heroine Han So-yeon (Go Sung-hee) has seen success in her career at an eyewear company, but she’s chosen to lead a lonely existence in order to hide a painful secret. An ordinary day turns extraordinary when she dons a pair of glasses and encounters a strange vision–Holo, a cutting-edge hologram made in the image of his creator, Go Nan-do (Yoon Hyun-min). Though he’s based Holo on his appearance, the brilliant inventor and his man-made doppelganger couldn’t be more different if they tried. Holo is sweet and attentive, while Nan-do is prickly and self-centered. So-yeon agrees to be a beta tester for Holo and, despite her best efforts, finds herself relying on Holo more and more. As she and Holo develop a relationship, Holo begins to “malfunction” and seems to develop the ability to feel. Complicating matters, Nan-do finds himself falling for So-yeon the more he gets to know her. It’s a man versus machine romance of sorts, but if you fall in love with an illusion, can there ever be a happy ending?

I'm about halfway through, and like MOA I'd say this drama has its good points and its bad points. Some things I like (the high-tech lifestyle and tech itself and the way business operates was pretty accurate) and some things just made me roll my eyes (investor manipulation, trope-y first kiss, obvious tragic childhood backstory). The heroine's face blindness was handled well, except when the "hero" uses it to keep her in the dark about who he really is... and this deception goes on for FAR too long. In terms of acting, Yoon Hyun-min does all of the heavy lifting and does a great job keeping nice Holo and nasty human as separate entities. The "villain", though, is played by Chansung and though he no longer has the continual deer-in-the-headlights expression he's never going to be that great of an actor; playing someone who is nice and attentive on the outside but eeevil on the inside is totally beyond him. I have to FF. a LOT. I'd probably skip right to the end if I weren't home sick.

Rushed through it because it is brilliantly addicting and involving but I will be watching again for all the details. It is really well-done, a strong mix of romance, detective case, cyber thriller and psychological drama. The cast are all excellent and the directing is high quality and inventive. The writing is really tight, I did not feel like any episode dragged for me. But this is all first watch opinions so..I will be back to say more.

This isn't their usual MO and basically means they don't expect the drama to reach out to a mainstream audience hence no point investing more money into.

@cloggie,
I'm shocked out of my gourd. It's just after 5AM on Fri., Feb. 7, in the NYC area, and all 12 episodes of MY HOLO LOVE are available on Netflix. Sell my clothes, I'm going to heaven! Yee haw!

Such has not been the case with CRASH LANDING ON YOU. Perhaps episodes are not available until after they have aired on tvN in Korea.

I'm hoping that the 12-episode length will keep the plot taut and purposeful. Fingers crossed that it's an entertaining script. Maybe this drama will give us a worthwhile examination of what makes us human, the metaphysical and spiritual implications of artificial intelligence, and a little something about consciousness and ghosts in the shell. ;-)

4

Seconding @msrabbit here. I want to read some opinion about it before committing myself to a binge watch project. 12 eps sounds like the right amount for romcom, so I'm hoping for something sweet and entertaining (and hopefully thoughtful too).

4

@msrabbit @gadis DB is recapping it.
But I think I'm some episodes today, so I'll let you know.

3

*high-fives @eazal*
I'm going to watch it without gorging, and give it time to sink in. If I need to attend to my dramas that are nearing completion, I'll put it on the back burner. I want to enjoy this. ;-)

I'm glad it's 12 episodes that clock in at just under an hour. That ought to make for a lean, mean script that keeps moving while still providing sufficient time for exposition and character development. No time for tail-chasing or wheel-spinning. ;-)

7

Thanks @eazal.

2

Thank you @pakalanapikake for your thorough analysis, as always. 🙂
Sounds like it's worthy of a try. Now I just have to wait for Viki to upload it.

Thank you for your premier watch for MY HOLO LOVE, @stroopwafel. I've been keeping my eyes open for it since it was announced on AsianWiki back in August.

I'm tickled to bits that Yoon Hyun-min is back as a male lead, and have my fingers firmly crossed that no dippy supernatural shenanigans derail this show. He's been a favorite since I live-watched BEAUTIFUL MIND, and then followed up OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN with a couple of Eric's earlier shows, including DISCOVERY OF LOVE. (He and Kim Seul-gi were so doggone cute together!) YHM will be playing the equivalent of Lewis Zimmerman, creator of The Doctor, an Emergency Medical Hologram Mark I assigned to starship USS Voyager -- as well as his own holographic doppelgaenger. What could possibly go wrong? In his portrayal of the holography engineer, he'll be following in the footsteps of actor Robert Picardo, who brought The Doctor to life with a memorably acerbic wit. HoloDoc was no depressive Marvin the Paranoid Android. He had all the charm of Bones McCoy. I can't wait to see what YHM has up his sleeve for this pair of characters.

I'm even more stoked that PD Lee Sang-yeob of THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SOO BAEK HYANG and Ryoo Yong-jae, scriptwriter of TIME BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF, are collaborating on this production. TKDSBH had gorgeous cinematography and outdoor settings on a shoestring budget (in comparison to EMPRESS KI, which aired at the same time). TBDAW was a well-paced action drama. I'm hoping that the National Intelligence Service doesn't have to get involved in this plot. LOL!

BTW, LJG & Moon Chae-won have a tvN show in the works. FLOWER OF EVIL premieres in June, IIRC.

I'm not as well-informed about directors and screenwriters. THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SOO BAEK HYANG was my second Kdrama after DR. JIN (!!!), and it was so beautifully filmed it made a lasting impression on me. The ensemble cast was terrific, and I still keep lookout for them. (Kim Young-jae appears to be portraying Ju Ji-hoon's brother in HYENA. Yay!) The writer of TKDSBH, Hwang Jin-young, went on to pen REBEL: THIEF WHO STOLE THE PEOPLE, and populated it with scads of memorable characters, even the minor ones. -- Don't let TKDSBH's 108 episodes scare you off. It's a daily drama sageuk, so they are only about half an hour. The show was my introduction to Seo Hyun-jin, whose Seolnan is my top Kdrama heroine of all time. ;-)

Cheers!

I'm not usually a fan of love triangles, but I'm keeping an open mind. I'd like to think that if starship Voyager's HoloDoc could program himself to evolve, the same may be true of holographic AIs outside the Delta Quadrant, too. And that may just light a fire under a certain human inventor to update his own BIOS and reboot his personality. For all we know, the AI's personality may be his maker's alter ego. Heh heh heh. I wonder if Mr. Data makes house calls to troubleshoot AI emotional issues. Or maybe one has to resuscitate Dr. Noonien Soong for that. ;-)

@eazal,
The Doctor aka HoloDoc is one of my favorite StarTrek characters, and Robert Picardo one of my fave actors. Mr. Data is another. Gene Roddenberry & Co. explored so many of these concepts long ago that it would be remiss to ignore them. Those shows, and others like them (BABYLON 5, anyone? Any Browncoats in the room? Has anyone noticed where the TARDIS is parked?) set the standard for science fiction TV shows. That's one reason why some of the recent robot shows have been so underwhelming to me. It's already been done, and far more satisfyingly.

I grew up reading Isaac Asimov's juvenile fiction, and that's where I learned the Three Laws of Robotics. In college, I became a dyed-in-the-wool Robert Heinlein fan, and developed a taste for H. P. Lovecraft, Lord Dunsany, and Ursula Kroeber Le Guin. All of them raise my expectations of fantasy, science fiction, and the occult.

Ah no, that doesn't help when you know someone but can't remember their name - in exactly the moment when you need to introduce them to someone else. 'Hold on a second while I look up what your name is' doesn't go down well.

What you need then is a holo AI, standing next to you, to tell you what they're called. There simply is no other solution ;-)

4

What's the trope called when the female knocks over the male, they fall to the ground with her on top of him and their lips lock. Surely there's a proper name for this trope. Anyhow, that's when it lost me...

@msrabbit,
I didn't want to spoil, so refrained from going into detail. I will say that PD-nim jumped in feet first with a spiffy car chase that would have been at home in TIME BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF and LOOKOUT. I wasn't expecting that, but it fit in nicely with cutthroat competition and industrial espionage.

AI Holo is a keeper. Pleasant, soft-spoken, observant, and tactful. He's a good dancer, and knows how to instigate low-key fun. He quickly deduces that uri heroine has prosopagnosia, and demonstrates how he can assist her with it -- as well as her mountain of work. I could have used one of him when I worked as a secretary. We don't really meet his Dad / inventor in the first episode, other than to glimpse the family resemblance.

My sense is that MY HOLO LOVE has a much better handle on AIs and robots than MY ABSOLUTE BOYFRIEND did. (Granted, that bar was set very low...) MHL invoked three rules for artificial intelligences that are analogous to Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. I'm not looking for industrial-strength science fiction in this show, but getting the basics right is a good start.

I'm pretty tuckered out when it comes to yet another instantiation of prosopagnosia (face blindness) in Kdramaland. On the other hand, having a "Seeing AI" hologram is actually a practical application of technology that makes eminent sense to me. The fact that it is achieved through the use of augmented eyeglasses screams Google Glass redux. (All I can think is that Capt. Ri and the Ducklings of CLOY would freak out at this revelation.)

I'll admit I am a bit conflicted with the timing of the premiere. STOVE LEAGUE is wrapping up next weekend, CRASH LANDING ON YOU is moving into the home stretch, ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIM 2 has just passed the half-way point, and TELL ME WHAT YOU SAW just started -- with several more shows debuting over the next few weeks. And KINGDOM season 2 premieres on March 13. When it rains, it pours. -- However, now that I think about it, Netflix has made the entire series available in one fell swoop, so I won't have to limit myself to two episodes per week. That makes it a lot easier in the long run. (Hmmm... so when can we expect KINGDOM season 3, Netflix??)

Hi @pakalanapikake. I have been scanning the comments and I am so pleased to see the excitement for one of my favorite actors Yoon Hyun-min. He and Jung Kyung-ho became early favorites of mine in the iconic HEARTLESS CITY. I think my favorite YHM drama is TUNNEL. His WITCH AT COURT was probably my least favorite drama of 2017 and that was because of the way his character was treated in the drama by the FL. Enough said. I passed on MAMA FAIRY so I am really looking forward to MY HOLO LOVE. I hope someday to see YHM and JKH reunited again. I know they were together in BEATING AGAIN which I enjoyed.

O/T I know what you are saying with “When it rains, it pours.” All of a sudden my viewing card is getting filled. I have determined that I can only watch one tvN drama at a time. That is solely because of episode length and has nothing to do with quality. So I have been holding my one tvN slot for Jung Kyung-ho et al’s upcoming HOSPITAL PLAYLIST. Now I have availability angst. I am amazed not to have seen it yet coming soon on either Viki or Netflix.

Thanks for the reminder about the show formerly called WISE DOCTOR LIFE, which premieres on March 12 -- right before KINGDOM 2. Arrrgh! I hear you about the length of tvN shows. One of the recent episodes of CRASH LANDING ON YOU exceeded and hour and a half. No wonder the leading lady keeled over from exhaustion.

I just finished QUEEN: LOVE AND WAR officially closing The Great Sageuk Year of 2019.

I now want to get going on RD,TK2 and MHL.
I thoroughly enjoyed RD, TK (all 21 episodes.) There is a couple of weeks before SKJ’s NICE WEATHER begins.
There is also coming down the line HOSPITAL PLAYLIST and supposedly coming in March is Lee Joon-hyuk (1984)’s
365: ONE YEAR AGAINST DESTINY.
Like you said, “When it rains, it pours”.

1

I also thought, "Face blindness again? Theme of the year?" But in this case, the face blindness isn't just a convenient handicap to make the FL someone who needs Holo the AI or his creator. I won't say much more, but how the FL came to suffer from face blindness is a mystery that gets solved.

I agree. It was delightful. So-yeon's reactions when she initially encountered the gentlemanly Holo were cute. She thought he was a ghost. I hadn't considered it before, but apparently humanoid holograms as well as android robots can elicit the "uncanny valley" response.

It was really good. I walked in expecting just a ton of melodrama right off the bat but it surprised me.

The writing of So yeon is impressed me in the 1st episode. She is not a cold, anti social person, she is just someone who is private and that seems to translate into being a bitch. And seeing her feelings hurt when she tried to put herself out there, again, so relateable. There was no conflict, no villain, the dude did not lead her on (from what we saw in the 1st ep); She just was too late to make a move. It happens.

She is a capable , competent adult who happens to have a illness that is not the end all be all for someone to have. When society stop making issue with women have issues, things will be alright.

Maybe we'll luck out and it will be Slice-Of-Life With Hologram. If we get really lucky, we'll get a nice kishotenketsu structure without conflict as used in 4-panel manga.

In a way, So yeon's ignoring people because she could not recognize them was akin to a deaf person not answering someone because they could not hear them (or read their lips).

I watched the whole thing from beginning to end and I don't remember any scene where she fell over and knocked him down and their lips locked. There was a scene where she had a rooftop evening with the AI and got drunk, and when the lookalike creator came to take back the AI, she woke up, decided to try kissing the AI and kissed the creator instead. It fit into the story.

I won't say My Holo Love is an outstanding drama -- it definitely has its faults (too much time on the evil mastermind and his thugs, for one). But it is a perfectly fine blend of romance, mystery, sci-fi, and action. It has appealing characters, it moves along pretty well, it has a consistent story from beginning to end, it's fun and a little suspenseful (although you probably will figure out the big background mystery long before the characters do). It's not trying to be a blockbuster like Memories of the Alhambra, but it definitely does a better job of following through on its premise. There's no letdown at the end.

It might have been in the trailer I watched - or it might have been one of the many trailers I saw that day and was another drama altogether! Memory slips every now and then.
These days I'm even having a hard time with "outstanding" dramas, much less ordinary ones.
And I wasn't let down at the end of Memories of the Alhambra. I thought it was a great ending.

I watched first 3 episodes of the drama and I did find it quite problematic.
1. In 1st episode HOLO tries to find trustworthy people and he can see their reliability in percentage. How can you determine somebody’s trustworthiness?
Does he determine it through their financial capability, social interactions, mental and physical health? To get that kind of data he should have access to all government and private data - all Bank transactions, social media posts, hospital records. Single entity that powerful is stuff of nightmare in this era where data privacy is huge concern.
2. HOLO tries to help FML in her work though connecting to servers directly. Which can be seen as hacking. Now he has access to all corporate data which is available to Geo-Lab (creator of HOLO).

3. There is gross breach of privacy when employees of Geo-lab can see intimate conversion between HOLO and FML. It is like your mobile network provider listening to all your conversion in name of giving you better service. Did FML gave direct consent to constantly being monitored and her every conversion recorded? I did not see it. It is unethical and unlawful.

4. HOLO shows FML CCTV footage from a public road. As per my knowledge this kind of footage cannot be seen without court order or appropriate security protocol in most of the countries.

It makes HOLO lawbreaking, all-knowing digital monster not cute cuddly friend.

If anyone watches the first 3 episodes you will figure out why Holo picks who it picks for a reason. There are many hints given.
3# Alexa .

Should it allowed to pick so much information? The program is not released to public. People do not know about it. You do not have option to opt out. Currently HOLO is seeking unauthorized entry in your life without you knowing it.
#3 Alexa- When we use Alexa , we sign a contract and we provide consent. This is was not case here.

All our devices do listen in on us...Holo is just doing the same but to the extreme (or just what the US gov seems to already been doing on a daily basis - as we now know thanks to NSA/Ed Snowden).
Holo is an unreleased product created by a hacker so it hacks into databases etc without much of a moral compass since the creator does not seem to have one. The released version would probably have less access to people's data until society gives its ok to have it all shared that way.
Plus this is k-dramaland where reasonable and realistic plots don't really happen often.

@sspat, you raise legitimate issues that do get addressed in the drama.

In later episodes they did address some of the issues . It was little late for me. At episode 4 ,I decided to ignore all issues related to AI , data privacy and security. I decided adjust my lenses and see it as standard trope filled k-drama with little bit AI on side.

I started watching this. The trailer gave me Are you human too vibes...no robots here but just the holographic AI.
Both actors are doing a good job and the story is interesting.
People online are complaining that only 12 episodes have been released...Netflix is playing the 1st season-2 nd season card again (as done before with Arthadal Chronicles, Love Alarm and Kingdom...) and viewers are not happy since k-dramas don't work that way on other channels.

I liked this drama, however I feel this drama sits right on the border of a good or bad drama depending whether you like frustrations that comes along with kdrama tropes. I binged the whole thing in a day but must admit I fast forwarded many parts. I guess one of my biggest turn offs was that the female lead seems very unrelatable. She is obviously beautiful but thinks she's an ugly duckling with her "problem". I can't really find the reasoning why she felt like she still needed Holo when a physical human being likes her and she likes him as well. I don't know... there are many parts I like and some parts I thought... meh. I'll give this a 7.5/10

I had the same question too! Why was the female lead so attached to Holo when she had had the cute male lead with a wounded heart right next to her? I guess Holo was the first being who reached out to her and she was emotionally attached for that reason. The drama reminded me of a bowl of instant noodles shared with a loved one. Not the most exciting meal, but the company makes all the difference!

I'd just like to commend MY HOLO LOVE for it's beautiful music. The OSTs are great, and I really like the instrumental music.

Binged this series in 3 days. Though I don't like how they spent so much time with the evil side, it was interesting to see how they raised many issues about AI that I otherwise wouldn't have thought about. Would rate a solid 8.5/10 for how thought-provoking it was, and for having only 12 eps (that are all less than an hour) so that I could finish this quickly and get on with my work 😂
