Lee Min-ho and Jung Eun-chae get close in stills from The King: Eternal Monarch

Fantasy romance drama The King: Eternal Monarch has released new stills of Lee Min-ho (Legend of the Blue Sea) and Jung Eun-chae (Legal High). In The King: Eternal Monarch, a portal between two worlds open up, and reality begins to warp as these two worlds collide.

The scientific king Lee Gon, played by Lee Min-ho, believes he must close the portal. In order to do so, he teams up with the other world detective Jung Tae-eul, played by Kim Go-eun (The Lonely Shining Goblin), who helps to protect the lives, the relationships, and love of the people around her.

Jung Eun-chae plays the youngest-ever and first female prime minister, Gu Seo-ryung, in Lee Min-ho’s alternate reality version of Korea. Befitting someone who’s made history, she’s confident and a bit haughty as well. They look to be having a tense whispered exchange in the new stills.

Upcoming Friday-Saturday SBS drama The King: Eternal Monarch, written by Kim Eun-sook (Mr. Sunshine) and directed by Jung Ji-hyun (Search: WWW), will begin on April 17.

As someone who enjoys Kim Eun-sook dramas, I wish The King: Eternal Monarch is entertaining like Mr. Sunshine, Goblin, and Descendants of the Sun and not a mess like Heirs.

Love the two leading ladies from the get go. Both talented film actresses and indie darlings.
It's good to see Jung Eun-chae in a production with more exposure through ratings.

Hum, I wasn't a big fan of the Search:WWW's directing, so I hope it will be more like Mr Sunshine.

He is good looking in a manly way. I wouldn't call him pretty. I mean this as a compliment.

Kim Go-eun is comfortable in her own skin whether you think she is beautiful or not. I love that about her.
Jung Eun-chae is a former model so she can do the modern runway look and can also dress down for a historical era palace maid.

LOL, no.

This is the funniest comment I've seen. Nothing against LMH, but the dude is manly. His face is very round, kinda like round Pillsbury dough-boy.

What does having a round face make someone manly? What does size have to do with anything? I'm thoroughly confused.

And...LMH has quite a chiseled jawline in the pics above. And I'm even more confused now.

I will post this out of boredom because I am stuck in lockdown and Oppa is talking to me in my head. Go away, Oppa. @trinpie, help.

A manly face is a face that looks like a man, depending on what you feel a man should look like. Some prefer round and cute baby faces. Others go for the mean, chiselled, hard alpha male look *psst...SSR*. Many may prefer an intellectual, clever, hot professor look. While a few may flip over the rough, blue-collar, outdoorsy look. But a manly appearance should preferably be accompanied by a deep, manly growl....*psst SSR*. I mean, imagine Hot Oppa opening his mouth and a chipmunky Candy voice coming out? Not. Good.

Okay, done. Back to staring at the four walls. Can't answer you, Oppa. Go away.

You need to let Oppa return to the forest where he belongs. And instead embrace Joppa. You can do this WhyWhy. I have faith in you. We're all here for you. You're a strong independent woman who needs no Oppa.

3

But she has endured so much for Oppa @trinpie, suffered so much to obey the Oppa Law.
Clam Zombies, Vibrator Man, inner ear damage.
It is too late for us to ask WHO her Oppa is.

4

YY, I like that you whispered SSR twice despite your oppa talking in your head. You can change your oppas but never replace SSR, he's the one and only emperor of the Korean Empire Lee Hyuk. Ahaha

@trinpie who is Joppa?

3

@katakwasabi I have a new Oppa. Joppa. Trin says she can share Joppa with everyone. His name is Joo Ji hoon. Henceforth, he will be known as Joppa.

@leetennant Oppa who? See? I am over him. Now, if only I could change my fanwall background...

3

Joo Ji Whoon?

*just grateful I didn't lose one of my two known jokes*

3

@leetennant Fell over laughing. This is like the best joke ever. Can't wait for your third joke, Elle.

4

LMAO, should I make my sentences into two paragraph so that you can understand it better?

Okay, my first sentence about LMH being manly has 0 relations with second sentence about him being round face. I pointed out LMH's round face because I saw his face being round like pillsbury doughboy in the trailer.

He is not round in the picture due to photoshop, but he is round in motion.

If LT were here she would have made the joke, but since she is on semi-hiatus someone had to take up the immense task of trying to fill her shoes. I hope I make her proud!

4

LT is still pretending to be on hiatus?

5

@leetennant doesn't want to watch this with me. Sad πŸ™

3

I'm no longer even pretending to be on semi-hiatus. But I am trying not to get pulled into this particular news item lest it inevitably results in me referring to this project as "my own personal hell" and annoying all the Lee Min Who stans and KES fans.

Even though I may not like KES's writing that much, one think I do give her absolute credit for is her world building and unique premises. Given with what's happening in the real world, I would totally love to escape in the dramas realm. This wasn't on my list but now it certainly is.

I'm sooooo looking forward to watch this drama. I hope it will be recapped or weecapped.

Also I wanna see Lee Gon try to topple my dramaland Emperor Lee Hyuk. He can try. And I will probably make comparison gifs of his effort. Hah! 🀭

I only remember Jung Eun Chae in Return. She was great as the wronged wife and stood up for herself. She looked soft but has a backbone. I hope she shines in The King. I personally think Return did a good job of balancing the good vs bad and despite it having more male characters, the women stood out and most importantly stood their ground.

On the other hand...isn't this drama supposed to be fully preproduced? but there are multiple new casting news recently. Hua3

I thought Jung Eun Chae's acting is mediocre at best in Return. Her acting with Park Ki Woong is off putting.

I knew her since her debut with Kang Dong Woon and Go Soo's film, but I've barely notice her in Chungmuro. Her marks is much lesser compared to top, top acting talents.

Acting wise was okay for me. Eventhough my focus was the bad guys...ehem Oh Tae Suk! I still remember her character. Kudos to the writer for making the character having a backbone instead of crying nonstop. I hope the female characters in The King are more varied. It will be sad if they were like the ladies in Heirs.

That's a KES drama for you. The stills released are like "two people will talk to each other". No doubt it will be scenic while they talk. The conversation will have 10 minute pauses between sentences and it will last for 4 episodes, intercut with sparsely beautiful flashbacks to the their last conversation. The parallels will make us gasp with the synergy.

Well, her City Hall lead (played by Kim Sun Ah) was defin itely interesting, with a massive character arc, but after the disappointing ratings KES said she would give the people what they appeared to want and never write a drama like City Hall again. So I guess we get what we deserve, stupid and/or weak heroines like A Gentleman's Dignity or Secret Garden or Heirs (how she cried and cried! Ugh). Things have been slowly looking up, with Descendants of the Sun and Mr. Sunshine, so I have a small hope for an interesting heroine.

Kim Eun Sook is such a hit or miss for me. & the fact that her dramas are pretty much just a long as* music video. At least that's what I think. lol. I can roughly predict that there will be plenty of longing stares accompanied by a sentimental ost playing in the background .
