New MBC drama casts Im Soo-hyang, Ha Suk-jin, Ji-soo, and Hwang Seung-un

Im Soo-hyang, Ji-soo, Ha Suk-jin, Hwang Seung-un

A new MBC drama called When I Was the Prettiest has started production and casting has been confirmed for its main cast, Im Soo-hyang (Graceful Family), Ha Suk-jin (Your House Helper), Ji-soo (My First First Love), and Hwang Seung-un (Time). The story is about two brothers and a woman who become embroiled in a love affair through a twist of fate.

Im Soo-hyang plays the central character, ceramic artist Oh Ye-ji, who dreams of living a normal life full of simple joys. But that simple life seems impossible when she’s dealt a cruel hand by fate and she somehow gets pulled into a love triangle with two brothers.

Playing our two brothers are Ha Suk-jin and Ji-soo. Ha takes on the role of rally driver Seo Jin, who has a tendency to barrel forward and doesn’t slow down when he pursues something he wants. He first meets Im Soo-hyang’s character at his father’s workshop and immediately feels drawn to her.

Ji-soo plays an architect named Seo Hwan. Im Soo-hyang is his first love and he feels they’ve been destined to be together ever since he fell for her at first sight. It goes without saying that his relationship with his older brother Ha Suk-jin becomes increasingly strained and tense as they become love rivals.

Hwang Seung-un plays Ha Suk-jin’s marketing business partner and ex-girlfriend Carrie Jung. However, she still carries a torch for Ha Suk-jin and has difficulty cutting ties with him in her life completely even though they are now broken up.

Written by Jo Hyun-kyung (Grand Prince), Maids) and directed by PD Oh Kyung-hoon (Bad Thief, Good Thief), MBC’s upcoming When I Was the Prettiest is currently being planned to air August 2020.

This cast: YES.

This premise: Noooooooo-

Someone will love this drama, I might even love this drama, but the idea of brothers falling in love with the same person makes me uncomfortable. Love triangles just suck for everyone involved.

Also, the writer of Grand Prince doesn't bode well. Don't get me wrong, I loved that drama, but that doesn't mean it was good.

Yeah... and GRAND PRINCE had a love triangle involving two brothers too. It does not bode well. Plus I also watched about 2 episodes of BAD THIEF, GOOD THIEF and bailed because it was excruciatingly boring.

But who knows? Koreans love their makjangs, so they might as well go for an outrageous love triangle and get high ratings.

I never watched Grand Prince, but I really liked Maids, I thought it was well written.

Still a bit sad that Yoon Kyun-sang did a pass on it somehow, wanted to see him on something a bit different...

I'm guessing he was supposed to be Ha Suk-jin's character? I suppose the two can pull off 'prickly' in similar ways.

Yes it's Ji Soo's role Seo Hwan.

At first I was disappointed when I knew he turned down the offer, because I have to wait a little bit longer to see him in a new comeback drama. But after knowing tqhis casts announcement and more detailed synopsis, I think I'm glad Yoon Kyun Sang didn't choose this drama.. I miss him in sageuk (〒﹏〒)

I usually like love triangles, especially when the underdog wins the affection of the guy/girl in the end (everybody loves David, I guess). However, I agree with you on this one. A love triangle pitting siblings against each other is not what to watch.

You make some good points, love triangles are perfectly satisfying when the right person is recognised. But now I've brought to mine all those dramas where the woman chose the more toxic man, the more aggressive man, the less caring man. Perhaps that's because writers unconscioisly promote unhealthy standards due masculinity? Hana Kimi, School 2015, Meteor Garden 2018 and I Need Romance come to mind.

But yeah, love triangles can be good. Any trope can, I guess, when it's done right.

Oh, I mean this is 1000% true. I'm not denying it one bit. However, I sort of think this is generally true about dramas and fiction. There are lots of things that I enjoy, even though I know they are flawed or have problems. To a certain extent, I simply accept this for what it is and acknowledge that there are lots of fiction which I can tolerate as fiction but which I would find problematic if enacted in real life.

To give a specific example, one of my favourite dramas of all time (perhaps my favourite) is Jealousy Incarnate. I love this show so much. However, I freely admit that JJS's character is a grade-A asshole (at least at the start of the show) and I would KHJ to choose GKP's character over JJS's character in real life.

Having said that, I think this is a matter of personal tolerance. I have a line and beyond that line I'll stop watching, reading, or listening. She Was Pretty is a great example. PSJ's character was so scream-y and irascible while CSW's character was so nice and caring that I legit spent most of the last third angry that with the writer for not ditching PSJ's character.

There are also some good love triangles, though. Strong Women Do Bong-soon, for instance, has a great love triangle where the nicer, kinder, more emotionally supportive and open guy gets picked over the laconic, prickly, emotionally closed-off guy.

I'm going to stand up for the guys on this one. You can be an aggressive man, you can be plenty masculine and yes, amazingly, NOT be a mouth-breathing troglodyte. I am in no way defending bad behavior - I was furious when the perky I Need Romance FL settled for old cheaterpants boyfriend - I am just saying that bad behavior is not related to "masculinity," toxic or otherwise.

There's no necessary connection between bad behaviour and masculinity; they are, in that sense, distinct and separable concepts. However, there is significant overlap between the two. In the context of fiction, it's not at all uncommon to find masculinity expressed in a way that is appalling.

I'm not suggesting only men behave badly in dramas. Women can, too. But the way male bad behaviour manifests in k-dramas is different; in many ways, it's more pernicious, given the cultural context and given the way female characters often respond to male bad behaviour in k-dramas.

You told my words. I was like: oh no, not another love triangle! 😒
Horrible!

Agree! The plot sounds so cliche. I was reminded of the tragic Kdramas with brothers/sisters falling in love with the same person in the 2000s like Glass Slipper and Stairway to the Heaven. I mean I loved them but these kinds of story belong to the past.

I also really hate love triangles. My problem with them is they never really develop any of the love lines in order to keep us guessing. And forget about any kissing or skinship, because then it would be game over. Ugh.

I love Im Soo Hyang. She's a great actress. But why do I have a feeling that this will be a tragic love triangle, instead of a nice happy ending. I have a sense of dread that our reckless drive will end up killing himself and others as well!

I didn't finish Your House Helper previously. I liked Ha Suk Jin though so maybe I'll give this a try although the premise of the story sounds extremely cliche and overdone.

Your House Helper was an amazing show: I have never seen so much PPL blatantly stuffed into a plot of any kdrama, anywhere. I think there was a plot, someplace. Ha Suk Jin was cranky. Everyone cheered when he smiled. The End.

I missed Ha Suk-jin and Ji-soo on my screen, and it would be 100% fun to see them as brothers, BUT IN A LOVE TRIANGLE? No. NO. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Good actors, but a bad premise... Sigh...

I was excited for half a second till I read the premise. I haven’t seen Ji-Soo in anything in a long time. I couldn’t watch his last project - it was also somewhat of a love triangle. And Ha Suk Jin!!
I’m of the opinion that it can never be addictive makjang. I don’t think love triangles can ever be done well if it’s a plot that takes center stage. The most it can do is not be a disturbance to the actual plot. You know, it ends in 2 episodes or they don’t focus on it at all. But the whole premise is centered around it. Yeah, I won’t be checking it out. 😫😫

I swear. I love a good love triangle IF DONE RIGHT( like Jealousy Incarnate), but everything about the synopsis and character descriptions sounds so meh.
Still, I hold out hope that it may surprise us. At least, you know straight up going in that there'll be angst and drama

I like love triangle if it's well done. The whole thing is to like to right character to avoid having a second lead syndrom during all the drama.

I really wanted to see Ha Suk Jin and Ji Soo in something but I’ll be skipping this. Love triangle is my most hated trope. It’s always, ALWAYS, a complete nuisance plot device that ruins plot and character development and uses ample screen time for hopeless moping around. Otherwise good characters become toxic and when they’re not, they spend all their time in angst. A show centered around that plot? No! A love-triangle between brothers? Even worse!
The cast is a YES for me. I just feel like they’re about to be wasted in this.

Agree with you completely. These kind of plots gives me headache and i would rather stare at a wall than watching two people fight over same girl with the same dialouges again and again. Pass!

Oh this sounds like a complex and emotional battering between the characters. I believe that if they maintain the love between the brothers throughout (or mostly throughout) that this can work beautifully. If this is a true triangle of love going all directions, then it might be really fascinating. But if they turn one or more of the brothers into an evil a$$ then it could all fall apart and not be worth the torment that viewers will feel.

What??? 😱
That would be already a spoiler!
Oh no, I don't want that either.

You know, I wish to see a love triangle in dramaland where the girl say: you know what? None of you. I want to stay alone, leave me by myself!

That would be awesome!

How amazing was Lee Bo young in Mother, that even when she had at least a very nice suitor, who helped a lot,, she decided to stay alone with her child!
Powerful girl!

Hahaha I feel like Korean dramas tell you whose gonna get the girl before you even start.
And that could work; it depends on how they go about it. I've seen it happen in a Taiwanese drama, however it was after a well-established and pretty lovely coupling so it was pretty aggravating lol.

i love the cast, but i am not a fan of love triangles, because it is damn hurting to watch someone lose their love. Mostly i have second lead syndromes and my past drama history makes me feel like here also i would like the second lead more, maybe. I try to avoid these kind of love triangles dramas.

it could be fun? there have been quite a few good soapy dramas lately... and i do really love the cast (ji-soo as the male lead?!) but it could also be so terrible... like SO terrible. also i feel like i prefer all the actors in comedic roles over dramatic ones? oh well. i guess we'll see how it turns out.

I agree with most people about the love triangle with brothers thing.

Unless it is a remake of Sabrina. The original Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and William Holden. I would watch that show for ever. The remake with Harrison Ford, Julia Ormond, and Greg Kinnear was aight, but the original was luminous.
