It was me being snarky about dramas still using certain tropes that seemed ridiculous during this new normal.

Yonhap News reports more than 50 domestic and foreign films have put off or canceled their premieres this spring. The daily number of moviegoers plunged to a record low of 15,000 this week, as people have been asked to stay home amid the rapid spread of COVID-19.
With the film industry struggling with the fallout from the months long coronavirus pandemic, South Korean movie distributors have made attempts to release films on multiple platforms.

Terrestrial broadcasters that have struggled with falling viewership have been tightening their belts again as the local advertisement market has been hit hard by the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Three broadcasters, KBS, MBC and SBS, seemed to bask in the increased TV viewing as people are asked to stay at home due to intensifying fears over COVID-19.

But the protracted coronavirus disruptions dealt a blow to businesses and to TV stations that depend largely on advertisements.
KBS, a state-run broadcaster, announced plans to adopt an austerity policy to downsize its spending by nearly 190 billion won (US$15.6 million). Its advertisement sales decreased by 8.4 billion won over the first two months of the year, accounting for 78 percent of its target. Monthly sales slid by 8 billion won in March alone.
MBC already implemented cost-saving policies this month as its first-quarter advertisement revenues tumbled by 9.3 billion won from a year ago. The TV station has cut allowances and bonuses given to its employees for work processes and production by 30 percent or more.
SBS said its earnings from advertisements dove by 10 billion won in the first quarter from a year ago and that it had a grim forecast for its April bottom line.

The uncertainty of recovery has put schedules in doubt. Some top movie actors scheduled to shoot two films in the second half of 2020 have been told everything is on hold. Other actors trying to balance between film and TV projects are also caught in a bind. A few new TV productions have started to film for May release dates while current productions are on hiatus. If entertainment revenue will get weaker, there will be less productions in 2020.

Park Bo Gum's new project started filming this week. I still think Hi Bye Mama is on hiatus since February 29. This week, Lee Byung-hun's two second half film projects have been put on indefinite hold.

I'd heard a rumor about Seo In Guk and one of the films he was working on. I was hoping you knew. I know he was in one film recently but hoped it had been completed and know he was offered another role but don't know what happened with that. Also heard he was offered a drama role. I am having some serious Seo In Guk withdrawal and hoping to see something soon.

On April 3rd, Seo In Guk drops out of film 'Hip Daddy' due to production's indefinite postponement. In March, he was reviewing an MBC script but has not committed to the production.

Thanks @welh I'm hoping he will still do the MBC script for a drama. :-)

I think I read somewhere that IU and Park Seo-joon are scheduled to start filming a movie together, but the announcement said the filming date was 'open to revision'.

Good morning beanies! I don’t usually post for OT but...

It looks like 3 of my plan to watch jdramas/cdramas (The Love Equations, The best of you in my mind, and Unsung Cinderella) are starting to air today. If anyone catches these premiers please let me know what you think about them!

Other than that I’m watching Nobody Knows, Skate Into Love and When the Weather is Fine all of which I’m loving :)

I think Skate Into Love definitely depends on your mood and expectations. Like a lot of Chinese web dramas, it's based off a fluffy novel (which I had already read) so you basically know what you're getting going in. The leads are really cute but there's a lot of ridiculousness you have to put up with at the beginning.

"Fuji TV has announced that the new drama “Unsung Cinderella -Byoin Yakuzaishi no shohosen” (Unsung Cinderella – Hospital Pharmacist Prescription”) (Thursdays at 10:00 p.m.) starring Ishihara Satomi (33) has been postponed due to the spread of the coronavirus infection.

The drama, which was to premiere on April 9th, will stop shooting for the time being because the shooting schedule has been affected so much that the staff had no choice but to postpone the premiere of the drama."

Last week i made the assumption of 75k-100k for april and we have already touched 100k at 10th. Good batting.
I assume once more - real one is more than 1000k and can touch 1.5 million by October.
Summer 2019 - the tests i had put myself into - kind of documented here - has come to help me a lot. Anemic for sure.

Rule - day gone, post gone. new day, new view. So here start the last week conversation
@windsun33 @spazmo Present situation suits this kind of leaders. Chaos is what makes people find nearest, strongest, safe place and the way these leaders came to power by inflating real issues and creating imaginary enemies, by flaming people insecurities is what free of cost provided by this little boy. So whether you believe or not - All these leaders are going strong - Trump is going strong.

I have said it several times - people need someone to blame and these leaders got this little boy to escape all responsibility and accountability.
So "china virus" is a pretty good strategy to put all the liability, all -ve, on someone, divert peoples rage and attention towards someone(ofcourse that identity ticks all marks for shady stuff too)all accountability and act as a true nationalist.. You might find trump stupid but he does have a good PR team.

I'm enjoying it. I'm getting beaten from all sides and still standing tall and smiling. The real fun starts when you are put into a corner.
One vs. One is the most boring thing. one vs. Many is where you feel alive.

@zzthorn I was trying to remember you name and at right time you came.
I had tried Photo Affinity when there was a good hype of it. In 2019. I remember now that at that time everyone was comparing it to Photoshop as PS had moved to subscription system. Then came dozens of comparison articles and videos.
And last time too i was talking from a startups business POV.
Its basic rule to have some key features that differentiate you from other competitors. That's what AP did. I'm with their tactics used on all fronts and they have progressed handsomely in just 15 months. And ofcourse quite cheap compared to PS trying hard to empty the pockets of customers. Still PS is ahead and better as overall package.

I am kind of a history selective history watcher, and tend to watch a lot of the "how xx dictator became a dictator" videos, and Trump's PR team would put Goebbels to shame. His biggest enemy is himself - he cannot keep his mouth shut.
That said, I think his BS is wearing thin with the corona virus and his constant false promises and claims. I make no secret that I have detested him ever since his Apprentice days, so I might be biased a bit :).

the amazing thing is that the pro-trumpers eat the ridiculous PR shit up -- it's ludicrous!
he DOES keep talking, and he says nothing but how great his administration is (it ISN'T), how smart he is (ISN'T), says nothing of value (using air time for promoting himself since he can't campaign actively), and states he won't wear a mask.
that's fine by me... i don't wish harm on people, but this man - there might be poetic justice if he contracts the virus (though i suspect he's the most paranoid individual behind closed doors and away from the cameras)...
okay, RANT done.
have a very good weekend, everyone - please stay safe, wear masks, wash hands, hug your loved ones (even if only virtually)...

From all I’ve read incumbents tend to do very well in a crisis - regardless of how they handle it, maybe because it’s a known quantity in a mess of change? Who knows.

In nearly all previous administrations that is true - but in Trump's case his bounce was very small and very short lived. It was up 4-5% for a few days, and has already fallen back about 6%.

What I find disturbing about the virus is the sheer amount of fake cures and really bad health advice being spewed out, some coming from fairly popular media - like the Quack Dr. Oz recommending Elderberry juice. But also ranging to crazy news stories about some wild eyed guru promoting cow pee as a cure. But even worse is the junk science coming from people that you should be able to trust (but I no longer do). Example https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/02/technology/doctor-zelenko-coronavirus-drugs.html

Every single time I think of leaving my apartment my neighbors (the upstairs or the downstairs ones, they are both insane) start SCREAMING at each other in the hallway. There's only one entrance and thats where they fight. Both couples have been on the verge of break up since before I moved in but quarantining is making it worse (not that they are actually doing the shelter in place, they are always coming and going and hanging out in the halls). In the last three weeks I've left my house 3 times. To take the garbage out.
I watch my governor update everyday and I think that maybe things are getting better but I'm still terrified of leaving my apartment. And I know that if I were to get it that I would more than likely be ok. But Im still terrified! I think its playing into some of my already extensive mental health issues. I need to get out there and DO something. But the fear is just really, really real. I'm scared that when it is all said and done and we're able to come and go at will again that I'll have turned full on agoraphobic.
But I hear other people coming and going all day long. I dont have a mask. Do I need a mask? Do I want to be a black person in the US of A walking around with a mask on? Because thats dangerous for a whole slew of reasons.

I wish I could tell you something that would help you with the fear. I know it's scary because lots of people are getting sick, but if you take precautions let's think that nothing will happen to you.
If it helps, I don't have a mask and when I go out (grocery store, garbage, pharmacy) I don't wear any. I just try not to touch anything, or my face while I'm out and then when I get home, I wash my hands.

That situation in the States is out of control so it's not irrational to stay inside. Hell, our situation is under control and I'm still staying inside unless I need groceries (although our population density is low and we can get out for exercise so I can go for walks around the park behind my house).

Stay inside, stay safe. If you do need to go out, hygiene such as washing your hands, sanitising and not touching your face is more important than a mask. But if a mask makes you feel better then by all means make one.

I'm sure once this is all over you'll find you can still leave your house. Because there's nothing irrational about the feeling that you need to stay inside right now.

Fighting, Isa!

So I'm on my second day of holidays. It doesn't mean I'm going anywhere, I'm at home and can't go anywhere, but for four whole days I won't be working, because even if I'm home, I've been working everyday since the quarantine was declared almost four days ago.

For the first time since this crazy thing began I'm having some time to take care of my home. I've been cleaning and ordering my apartment. Also, me staying at home for such a long time makes me want to change all the furniture. I've already bought a desk, a dustbin, two folding chairs for my terrace, a champagne plug, a small ladder for the kitchen and I still have two days ahead. Amazon loves me.

Happy weekend and keep Beaning On!

Despite realizing how grave the current situation is, it has been bugging me how calm I have been these weeks. A mental health post explained that it is very common among people who were already living/had lived in ‘chaos’ before the pandemic broke out, because the extra chaos will not make a difference for them. The posts also warns the calm ones to watch out for trauma triggers during the pandemic to avoid experiencing the chaos again. Very confronting, and an important reminder not to minimize my chaos or its aftermath.🤔

According to the post, another reason for the calm demeanor is that the people without chaos finally can relate, now that the pandemic makes them suffer as well. I have to admit that this reason is not working out in my favor, because my childhood best friend has proved again that she does not understand me.

Since she was born and raised in difficult circumstances, I was so happy and proud when she earned her permanent spot in a top company right after graduation. However, as soon as she started to climb up, her life started to revolve around the company and she accused me of using excuses not to find a job. She amended her accusation later on, but by that time her devotion to her company and my unemployment had become taboo topics, and she no longer divulged anything of her own accord. We no longer retreat to my room to talk privately whenever we get to meet up, nowadays we stay in the living room so that she can talk to my parents and play with my godchildren. Enjoyable, but seriously watered down.

Now that her company had to close, she is complaining on social media about going crazy at home, with only her accounting course book for company. I was hoping she would finally realize that I also was going crazy at home back then, instead of using excuses as she claimed. She still has her wage while the company reduces her overtime and she gets to keep her job and its perks, I do not. Speaking of perks, her course book is recommended (and probably paid for) by her company to climb up once again as soon as the pandemic ends, while I used my savings and risked going to school again two years ago and still doubt sometimes whether I made the right decision back then.

In the past I validated her struggles and understood why she resented my better circumstances. Right now I validate the pandemic struggles others face and I even sympathize with hers to a certain degree. But I cannot help but be disappointed that she still does not acknowledge that I had my struggles as well, and that her accusation back then has soured our friendship. Friendships come and go in our lives, but K-drama childhood friend tropes are clearly overrated.🤔

"Despite realizing how grave the current situation is, it has been bugging me how calm I have been these weeks."

It's funny that you mention that, because I've been wondering the same... I had a major health crisis that made me spend a round year in treatment. Now I'm ok, but still not out of the woods until another year passes by. Because of that, I was still reeling, old issues resurfaced, and when this whole lockdown thing came up, I was afraid of how I would cope. It turns out I'm ok! Apparently, Im not as anxious about my own existence if the whole world seems to be worrying the same. People are strange 🤣

I’ll go to You When the Weather Is Nice ~ There are tragedies, and then there are tragedies that can’t be fixed. I fear this drama is filled with unfixable things that run so deep and overtake in silence that our couple is doomed. I wish it weren’t so, but after ep 12, I’m not expecting a happy ending. Another thing, so many of the characters are familiar, like people you’ve known in your own life. This drama is tricky, subtle but strong.

Hospital Playlist ~ I loved Dr. Yang’s story, how he is one big teddy bear and deserves somebody to love him!

Heart Signal 3, yay! Adding P.O. and Yoon Shi Yoon as panelists is fun, they’re so into “reading” the signals, but maybe not always so good at it – ha! I really like the vet student although she isn’t getting much attention so far. Anyway, fluffy fun, I could use some!

I’m keeping up with my usual reality/entertainment k-shows; Radio Star, Master in the House, Home Alone, 1N2D, Delicious Rendevous, The King of Mask Singer, Ask Us Anything, The Manager (one of my favorites), Immortal Song,s Happy Together, Love Naggers 3.
I’ve watched three episodes of A Piece of Your Mind and for some reason, I feel like it sucks the energy out of me. With all that’s going on in this crazy world, I don’t need that. To the back burner it goes.

I watched the first episode of Eccentric! Chef Moon and don’t have a good read on it yet. I’ll watch another couple of episodes, but these days I am more sensitive or perhaps less tolerant of things that don’t nourish my soul. Any one else have a pitch for Eric and Chef Moon?

I’ve made a few masks for family and friends with 3 layers of tightly woven cotton and flannel and elastic. They take more time than I thought, but I’ve mailed a few to friends who asked me to send them one, and I’ve made sure family has them. My brother took boxes some construction masks he had in the garage to first responders in the neighborhood. A family member’s co-worker is being tested and the bank will close its branch if the test is positive, so say a little prayer for that person, his family, and all the coworkers. Thanks. Stay safe, beanies! And Happy Easter as we celebrate separate but together in spirit!

I trust Haewon! Girl is vulnerable, but plucky. Her resilience and straightforwardness will win over Eunseob's tendency to clam up... After I found out what we was doing during those years he disappeared, I'm actually more optimistic about the ending of this drama, it's not as if he left everything and went drifting. Boy's got a lot to deal with, but his heart is in the right place

I’m rooting for them, I really am. And well, it’s a K-romance, you know? I think I’m bracing myself for the worst and hoping for the best. I like how there is no glossing over past traumas and our lovable characters are dealing with theirs pretty realistically. You’re an optimist, fly colours!

I watched the first three episodes of Eccentric! Chef Moon and threw in the towel. Then I thought about it for a bit. Maybe this is all a big meta K-Drama insider joke?

I've been wondering if each episode is referencing tropes in specific K-Dramas. I don't watch nearly enough to recognize them all, but I saw some familiar stuff from Modern Farmer in one.

Take a peek at some of the other episodes and tell me what you see. I'm re-watching the first 4 with a different mind set.

best,

raficoso

Modern Farmer eh? I watch a lot of kdramas, so if that’s what S going on, I might just like it. Thanks for the insight. And I’ll let you know once I see a couple more eps!

Just watched E5.

SPOILER ALERT

The evile corporate empire stuff is turning me off. It takes too much time away from the fun/cute/sweet/happy stuff. One savvies bad people with bad intentions pretty quickly, we're living in a world that is dishing it out by the metric F-ton.

I'd like some decency and kindness please, and a lot of it.

Happy Friday, Beanies! Pararel to dramas, been watching Tiger King on Netflix. It's wickedly fun, and very crazy... It's also sad because you know there are real people -and loads of felines- being victimizwr by some really twisted individuals. I feel kind of guilty that I'm having so much fun watching this, but people's styling, the houses, the stories... Omo!

It is crazy. I got through 3 eps, may go back, but spending time with them started to depress me.
The one that I found really interesting and scary is the guy that scarface may have been based on. Like he is still rolling in some money, where is that coming from?
I almost got a little worried for the film makers, like dont film in that house. What if you disappear afterwards.

Yes it is totally addictive to watch

It’s been a long week here, at least we have the Easter bunny coming in a couple of days! (The PM has assured the country he’s an essential worker 😁)

Had the interesting experience of being tested for covid19 (the whole family is sick, but probably just a cold) - makes your eyes water!

I’m feeling grateful to live somewhere with outdoor space, and that the weather is nice. Hope everyone is keeping safe and well.

Hello all:

How goes? I'm sincerely tired of winter. At least the lockdown will end when we have summer. hopefully.

Dramas:
I'm so glad i caught the recap of episode 3/4 of Married Couple. I was fearing there'd be gray areas. I don't mind being deep but when it comes to adultery, give me the straight up black and white, bad person versus good person. So yeah, now i'm relieved. i can watch without feeling all ethically and emotionally torn. I hate being conflicted sometimes.

When the weather is fine -- ah sheesh, a certain lovelorn former bestie is too obsessive. I was giving her the benefit of the doubt but dang, the manipulation. Even if she dies in the cold, she's still going to leave a little harmful dig in our otp's lives.

Reset 365 -- Dear me! They're dead? Or were dead? ah me! AND they were all connected before they died? Uhm.. Kdrama fate, work this out for me.

Hyena -- Show my "favorite ultra-intelligtent corporate villain" actor that he picked on the wrong woman!

Find Me in your memory -- i am so in love with this actor and with all that male neediness...especially when they have that competent silent persona. Ah, my type! Alas, in real life, this type is hard to find. Either they are simply without emotion or they are too needy. But i digress.

Nobody Knows -- kinda tired of religious serial killers but did i say i love beta males?

Rugal -- i don't like super-hero stories...unless it's a rare one and i like it.

A piece of your mind -- i'm too stressed anticipating some villainy afoot so i haven't watched the third or following episodes. The love story was good enough by itself. I understand that characters have other stuff going on in their lives BUT I hate it when kdramas overplot to a point where the organic story gets convoluted and unreal and doesn't work itself out without some weird bump from the sub-plot.

Held in a Lonely Castle -- Loving it

Stay safe everyone and have a wonderful weekend.

I'm in search for a new drama. I'm watching Hospital Playlist but I have issues with it. I didn't like the nurses/doctors lying about a patient's condition and made the obgyn doctor run to the hospital just to celebrate his birthday. That was not okay at all and I didn't find it funny even in the slightest. Stuff still happens behind the scenes/off camera which makes it hard for me to root for these characters.

The moment that touched me was when the son has a heart problem and dad came, requested the most expensive treatment despite being so poor. Dad just broke my heart, and the story of his loving son, who works day and night for a paycheck was so sad. I hope there's a follow up for dad-son duo in the next episode. I would like to see if the son made it out of the operating room alive and how will they address the bills and payment.

Ever notice how in almost every drama that people always want to buy "the most expensive" whatever it is, and never mention "the best"...

Lol. I never noticed that. I actually went to rewatch the scene. No worries the doctor said he'll give the most expensive and the best prosthetic valve.

I'm fine being inside mostly and I can work from home so I haven't lost anything with Covid19 so far (other than my freedom to move about as I wish). But for God's sakes, Beans, STOP ME EATING.

I'm binging Skate Into Love this weekend and hopefully it's as cute as people say it is.

I'm going to keep the poll open for another week so vote for your best and favourite.

Hello everyone,

I'm a lurker from way back and rarely posted. I really slowed down watching dramas in 2014. I started watching more again recently because I'm high risk and in self isolation in the midwestern US.

I am more fortunate than many, I teach online and that part of my work life hasn't changed much. My second job is an essential service job, but my employer has been very understanding. My husband works for the postal service and is taking every precaution.

I worry about our world. At the same time, I'm old enough to have weathered a couple of other world crises. I'm hopeful, yet watchful. Humans are mostly decent, but when they are not, JFC get me my boots, the Lysol and a big old hammer because I got work to do. I'm not a super hero but I hope I think like one when the going gets rough.

I really like the tagline "We're all in this together" except for the fact it sends the song from High School Musical into an endless loop in my brain.

Check out Eccentric! Chef Moon. I have a theory.

best,

raficoso

I work from home even before this pandemic happened, and as an introvert I rarely go out except to work at a cafe or meet with a friend. At first this lockdown didn't make a big difference. Now I'm beginning to go nuts. I share a room with my mum in a (temporary) apartment. She only has to work every other week. The small living space and lack of privacy sometimes makes me cranky. And there's no balcony or backyard to enjoy anymore. Limited changes in scenery. I miss our dog. We had to leave him with my cousin in the countryside. Hodu sounds like a cute name and if we still lived in our old house and got a new dog I'd give him that name too. Basically I just miss home. There's a long frustrating story behind this and I can't wait for it to be finished. They say blood is thicker than water but obviously not as thick as some family members' faces. Grr.

Anyway, the only drama I'm watching now is Weather. I do wish that we didn't have to deal with a pile of first-loves or with a character like Bo-young, but I don't mind it so much. I'm curious how the story wraps up.

PS. I learned that Eunseob = 은 eun (silver) + 속눈썹 soknunsseob (eyelash). How cute!

Agree! I couldnt be enjoying this drama more, but I could totally do without moronic Boyoung... couldn't they create conflict without the typical jealous second FL? sigh
About your living space, fighting! I live in a small apartment with my partner and 2 kids, not even a balcony... Everyday there's always someone who gets cranky. It's tough, but we'll see the end of this! Hodu is a cute name

I look forward to these open threads. The threads make me feel less lonely in a world filled with covid-19/bad news. I am trying to think positively but being stuck at home and seeing the lockdown being extend again and again is demoralizing. I know I shouldn't complain though and that the situations our front liners are in are a lot tougher than mine. I am thankful for them. Stay safe everyone.

I would not call it complaining. Just because our front liners have it worse, does not mean that your struggles and feelings do not matter. They are valid, and voicing them will help you to get through hard times. I am glad that the open threads help, and I hope that you can find other things to distract you. I wish you the best!

Hi. I just recently did my Itaewon Class marathon. It's a fairly familiar story, one that I've seen a couple of times in dramaland.. but I do get the charm of the show (until ep 13). The characters were well thought of and felt real. Esp the DanBam fam. Or maybe I got hooked with Yiseo's sociopath charm as the female lead? She wasn't just a typical female lead, but she was unique (for me) in drama history. She had the spunk and directness that sometimes hurt a little too deep. It wasn't Saeroyi's unwavering boldness--I've seen it before. In the end, Kim Da Mi takes the cake. I haven't watched episode 16 yet. Idk if I will. Maybe after I watch The Witch. Idk if anybody else here has watched Strongest Deliveryman. The story is very similar. Maybe it's another reason why I didn't thoroughly enjoy watching IC. Nonetheless, it held its own place in the drama scene for being a good underdog story of life, dreams, individuality, and perseverance.

I'm late to the party but finally made Dalgona Coffee today. It was really good! My mom said she used to make it a lot when she was younger.
Also I must have been living under a rock but didn't notice that Jung Il-woo started the trend this time!

I dont know where to post this or to whom I should talk to about my dramania. So I guess here it is. I just watched Something In the Rain for the second time. And for the second time I wish I could put on repeat and watch it over and over again. I cant understand my feelings, but I cant stop them neither.

The first time I watched, I promised myself I would give a good 5 years before I would watch it again. My feelings get messed up because of this drama. For me, he is still the best boyfriend in all dramas Ive watched and being a older single woman, it kinda brings me a fantasy and hope of love. I am gonna give another good 2 years before I watch it again.
