Premiere Watch: The King: Eternal Monarch

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Fantasy, romance, historical
Episode count: 16 (70-minute episodes)

Possibly the most anticipated drama of the year so far, The King: Eternal Monarch is set to premiere later this week. You don’t need me to tell you that this is not only Kim Eun-sook’s latest creation, but that it’s also Lee Min-ho’s first project after his military service. The budget is huge, the stakes are high, but if you can believe it, the buzz is even higher.

The King: Eternal Monarch tells the story of two parallel worlds. One world is a modern-day Korea with the Korean Empire still in existence (and Lee Min-ho as the eponymous king), while the other world is South Korea as we know it today. We’ve seen our fair share of dramas that explore what a present-day Korean monarchy would or could look like, and they’ve ranged broadly in the kinds of stories they’ve told, so I’m curious where The King will land. But it’s the parallel universe aspect that intrigues me the most here — a devil opens the door between our worlds, and here’s betting that our characters get thrown into some serious havoc because of it.

Lee Min-ho’s role as the king sounds fairly standard. He’s the epitome of a regal monarch, but he’s also prickly, sensitive, and obsessive (yep, sounds like a Lee Min-ho role to me!). He also has a penchant for escaping from the palace (with his shadow/guard Woo Do-hwan in tow). There’s a bit of history that makes this setup even more dramarific, though, because as a child he not only endured a trauma because of his father’s assassination, but he just might have already crossed that barrier into the other world. Hmm, a persnickety king with a taste for adventure can only need one thing… a heroine to match.

That’s where Kim Go-eun’s character comes in. She exists in the “real world” South Korea as a crime-fighting detective who’s tough, protective, and dogged about bringing criminals to justice. The two meet when the door between their worlds is opened, and it looks like they have to join forces to close it.

Where things get complicated is that Kim Go-eun also exists in the Korean Empire reality, but here, to contrast her crime-fighting detective, she actually plays a criminal. Woo Do-hwan also exists in both realities — in one as an imperial guard, and in the other as a public service worker. These dichotomies are very much on purpose, and set up a ton of storytelling potential — I’m pretty sure the drama will have some fun playing with these doppelgängers. Rounding out the cast is the Korean Empire’s prime minister Jung Eun-chae (who gets entangled with the king), and Kim Kyung-nam (a major crimes detective with an unrequited crush on Kim Go-eun).

Whether you’re chomping at the bit for this drama’s premiere, or burrowing under the covers to protect yourself from the takeover, it’s a pretty safe bet that The King: Eternal Monarch is going to be important in the annals of dramaland. Will it be important like Heirs is important, or will it be more of a Mr. Sunshine situation? I’ll see you on Friday — let’s find out.

Haha nice description Missvictrix! Are you going to be weecapping it?
My first 6 dramas were all Lee Min-ho's, and once I got to know hes in the military I've gone on to discover so many more actors and dramas! I am so excited to live watch a Lee Min-ho drama, and just after my submissions, it feels like a gift! 😃
I really wanted to check out atleast one work of all the other actors but can always do that after this drama! Each of them have a fan base here on DB and I'm pretty sure I'm going to become their new fan in no time!
They've done really well in building hype, and there are a lot of questions and theories going around on the plot already! Nothing can be worse than Heirs so this is definitely going to be good! 😃

Nothing can be worse than Heirs indeed. I don’t know how I feel about Kim Tan. I’m torn. That role did LMH both good and bad. It definitely took his career to the next level but I feel he’s still making up for it. Before heirs, he was an actor with potential. After heirs, “wait, why is he so famous?” Anyway, I’m hoping this is KES’s redemption role for him.

Will it be important like Heirs is important, or will it be more of a Mr. Sunshine situation?

The King: Eternal Monarch will be Heirs-, Descendants of the Sun-, Goblin-important. The cast and fantasy genre will make it a trendy hit, and Kim Eun-sook's catchphrases and scenes will go viral, but it won't receive critical acclaim like Mr. Sunshine.

The King: Eternal Monarch will dominate ratings, and its air time of 22:00 doesn't even overlap with ratings behemoth A Couple's World at 23:00.

They can’t be friends in this one because they’re going for the same guy.

I’d say the best you can get that from Writer Kim is Mr. Sunshine. I thought both female leads were quite strong and ended up doing something major for the movement. It was epic when they plotted to kill all the Japanese soldiers. Bravo!

Hmmm... but it’s not your typical sageuk. It’s taken place during a transition phase. Half the people wore “modernized” attire and half wore hanboks. I mean, that’s the charm of it. They captured that time period flawlessly! But, I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite drama. It’s more meaningful but the ending just didn’t do it for me. There were flaws I couldn’t turn a blind eye to. Until this day, I still question why.

They appear to be the same age so we'll probably escape the icky bit from Goblin. I'm hoping since she's a detective, she'll be badass and not need to be saved every five seconds. Or we could balance it out. She saves him, he saves her, she saves him.

She seems badass but based on the teaser....adult King Tan will be stuck with a memory of adult KGE he saw as a kid from 25 years ago...but KGE says 25years ago, she's only 5 yo. So his memory is flawed. Or....there are two badass grownup KGE in different worlds! The possibility of spinoffs is endless in this fantasy world.

I am with you Maggie. I am really looking forward to THE KING and wish everyone involved good luck.
I am totally unfamiliar with: Director-nim,
Writer-nim and the FLs. I am familiar somewhat with the MLs.
Recently I watched (an enjoyed for the most part) ITAEWON CLASS. The comments on the recaps were for me the most heated since APAD (with the Ye-line and Min-Ho-Young shipping war.)
I hope we don’t have that here.

Over the last few months both JCW and LMH have been subject to some rough comments (imho) the type of which frankly I wasn’t used to seeing on DB.

7

LOL obviously you were not around for the Trash/Chilbongie wars of Reply 1994. No one came out of those comments unscathed.

7

I’m only here for now. The comments section will be a shit show. I actually want to enjoy this one, for LMH and all the other cast. And hey, with writer Kim, it can go one way or the other and one shit show is enough for me. I can’t handle 2 at the same time hahaha.

The thing is this. If a drama generates comments about the drama itself, and dissenters appear and argue about the characters and their strengths or flaws, it's all good. But, when a drama is so awful, commenters start to make up their own stories, and comments go off tangent and descend into wackiness. And still have loads of fun at the same time. Thinking of you, Forest, in a nostalgic, fond kind of way.

Ok people whether you listen to me or not is up to you but... Please don't pit the actors against each other. Please no fight with each other. Please no name calling even if you disagree with a person, calling them names proves nothing. Constructive criticism is fine, talking about their acting is fine. But not bringing down the other person or actor or whatever to make your point. Any criticism it should be about their acting only not them as a person or their looks or whatever. Also what's the point in stooping to the other person's level by trying to counter hate with hate. How does that prove your point? It only proves you are as bad as the others or worse not better. Also just because someone hates on your favourite doesn't necessarily make your favourite bad but how you choose to respond does show what kind of person you are.

I don't know about you all but for me talent before fame. If the actor is good then how I respond to their acting and how it affects me that's enough to prove to me if their acting is good or not not how famous or how loved the actor is. I wouldn't even watch a bad drama or bad acting for my favorite let alone someone else's. I might start a drama for them but if I enjoy a drama or not has to do with the plot, the characters, the emotions I feel while watching, not the actor but the acting. And that's exactly what intend to do with this drama. I fully intend on watching and deciding for myself. And I say this as a person who has watched all of LMH dramas in their entirety and two of WDH.

13
12
reply

Required fields are marked *

Couldn’t agree more! Why can’t we just enjoy two actors joining hands on the same project! It makes it difficult for me to enjoy the bromance when fans are pitting them against each other. LMH and WDH seem to get along pretty well in real life so just stop it.

I don't understand where this is coming from because I don't remember any fighting in the Heirs, Descendants of the Sun, or Goblin recaps. All the comments were about liking or disliking the show.

As for Itaewon Class, all the comments were about the characters, not the actors.

4
9
reply

Required fields are marked *

I am talking about how people responded to each other during the IC comments. They went too far and became personal. It became less about the characters and more about the person commenting. Also didn't heirs have polarising comments due to both the leads?

5
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I must not have a visceral reaction to comments as they never make me drop a drama. I thought Itaewon Class' constructive criticism outweighed any offensive comments.

I scrolled through a few Heirs recaps, and any polarizing comments about the actors were about their acting, not attacking the actors personally. Kim Eun-sook's writing is also polarizing, which I consider fair game to comment on.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Less like dropping more like indefinitely on hold. I actually read through most comments and posts, here, Tumblr, MDL. Both sides had something I thought of worth to say. I agreed with both sides somewhat. But what these places have in common is the fact that people started attacking not only the characters but also the person they were responding too whether directly or indirectly.

They grasp the viewer and are addictive. I know quite well that I'll leave the show by the sixth or maximum eight episode because that's what her weak part is, the middle. But I still know she can deliver in the first few episodes, I won't be surprised to see people liking her show immensely in the first 3 weeks. I'll watch most probably till then too. Plus a little fantasy in these chaotic tense times doesn't hurt too.

Hopefully Kim Eun Sook proves me wrong- her more recent dramas have had considerably more likeable characters (when they're not played by certified trash or romantically paired with minors, eek), so who knows?

I have thought up a whole new range of words. I spend a lot of my time thinking these days. So here they are.

1. Oppa. A name you call your favourite leading guy.

2. Oppas. Plural. Two or more favourite leading guys. The number of Oppas is unlimited

3. Oppressed. To stay pressed, bound to Oppa for eternity. And beyond.
Note: Inspired by @trinpie. Thank you, Trin.

3. Oppadorable. That moment when your Oppa tugs at your heartstrings and you go, Awww. That's why you are my Oppa.

4. Oppannoying. Sometimes, just for a teeny weeny moment, you feel a surge of irritation at your Oppa. It could be when he is acting overly cute, or prancing about in designer suits. Or being a jerk.

5. Oppagitated. That moment when you realise you are over your Oppa, and you want to change your fan wall, but guilt keeps you from changing it.

6. Oppangst. When you feel moody and broody, and it's because you are so in love with your Oppa and you could just DIE waiting an entire week for his next episode.

7. Oppet. When you buy a pet, live or otherwise, online, so it'd take your mind off your oppangst*. (*Item 6)

8. Oppest. What you turn into after a period of time. When you gush over how great, how handsome and how clever your Oppa is, and you realise people are avoiding you.

9. Opprah. You become a talk-show host, and you talk about Oppa and how much you love him on air.

I can't help. I never call my favourite leading guy 'oppa'. I don't meet the 1st criteria. Sorry YY.

Sorry for the late reply sister YY. But here’s a new oppa word in your dictionary.

OppaLeeMinHo. The Oppa that YY loves dearly now. Together we are Minoz sisters with the rest of the Corea-drama community 🥰🥰

Unsolicited, but I couldn't help chiming in with a few (yours are way better though! I was weeping!):

OppOmo - Exclamation for anything Oppa-related.

Opparition - Oppa in your dreams.

Opptitude Test - 'How well do you know Oppa?'

Oppasite / Oppasition - Your seat for when you meet Oppa

Oppining - The act of thinking about Oppa

Oppinion- Unsolicited opinion on another person's Oppa, express at own risk!

This is truly excellent work, which needed to be done. I’m too old for anyone to be an Oppa 😢 but I’m happy for you! Thank you for the laughs today 🤣

Oppabandon - When you realise you've moved on to a new Oppa and left your old Oppa alone and unloved.

Oppani - When you refuse to have an Oppa and all this Oppa talk makes you vaguely uncomfortable.

Oppahjussi - When your Oppa is now so old that you should stop calling him Oppa and possibly start naming his grandchildren but he will remain forever young to you.

Oppanalogy - When you bring everything round to a discussion of your Oppa no matter what the topic is.

I thought this was a pretty darn good addition to beanie world.

A possible addition to #4 is the extreme variant, Oppabidinglyannoying. When you can't recall any role they took that wasn't a jerk.

I realize this may heavily be weighed towards certain eras (and especially candy romcoms). Yet I can definitely think of some leads that fit that--even when they are fake being a jerk because noble idiocy or undercover or misunderstanding or covering past scars or fill-in-your-most-annoying-fake-jerk-reason.

Despite dropping dramas like my mother drops hints about how I should be married by now (often), and never having liked a Kim Eun-sook drama, I have been excited for this premiere for weeks now. I am dead set to watch this show to the bitter (or beautiful?) end. The cast, the hype, the comments section just screams pure entertainment. It will be an event. Maybe it will become a hate watch, maybe I'll get swept up into it all, but either way I'm going to not take this drama seriously for one second. I'm going to swoon at the cringy parts, giggle at the ridiculous parts, cackle at all the plot holes and cliches and just have an all around romp of a time. I can't wait.

He’s the epitome of a regal monarch, but he’s also prickly, sensitive, and obsessive (yep, sounds like a Lee Min-ho role to me!). ....sounds more like Kim eun seok character to me...snicker...

Yes, her heroes do tend to be sensitive and angsty (City Hall, Mr. Sunshine are prime examples)...unless they are just jerks (see Heirs, A Gentleman's Dignity)

Once you watch a Kim Eun Seok drama, you watched them all and I say this as a fan of her work!

So Lee Min Ho's character has no doppelgänger in the "real" Korea? And he might have crossed the portal as a kid...but they don't mention in which direction...interesting. I just hope the whole doppelgänger story is not too confusing to follow.

maybe this drama will bring me out of my kdrama slump ever since the lockdown began in my country. i was ecstattic when they announced work from home exactly a month back but cant believe i have not watched one single episode of anything in last one month. even jo jung suk and hospital playlist didnt bring me out of this.
i am so burned out that i dont want to even punctuate this writeup.

So... I'm actually more excited by the hype around the show than the show itself hahaha. I didn't watch Heirs, Goblin or Descendants of the Sun so I want to be part of it this time (or at least try...). I don't know if I prefer the show to be actually good or bad....Count me in for the premiere :)

I've never seen Woo Do-hwan in anything but I already like him. What a charming lil aura. He's probably the only reason why I ~might watch this show. But then this is Kim Eunsook and lord knows I never end up loving her works...

Today is Friday. YAY!!
I love love. My best genre is RomCom
I love KES dramas. The only problem I found with HEIRS was the way PSH character was written. She was too weak. Always one step forward, two step backwards. DOTS,GOBLIN,MR SUNSHINE, I loved them all. I think she has learnt her lesson in not writing weak female lead

I'm not so sure about lee min ho in the show (still gonna give him a chance) because from the few clips I've seen, his acting seems repetitive. But I'm giving him the benefit of doubt.
Kim Go Eun!!! The main reason why I will watch this show. Been a huge fan since I watched that masterpiece Goblin (I disagree with those who say goblin was popular but had no critical acclaim. I believe it has both. There's a reason why its one of imdb's top picks for kdrama recommendations).
I like woo do hwan too and he's a pretty great actor from what I've seen of him. But my main reason for watching this is definitely kim go eun. Im also glad that the writer picked kim kyung nam for this show since I was absolutely amazed with his acting in come and hug me. The only reason why I stuck through with that drama was because of him. I like jang ki yong and I'm looking forward to his drama too but kim kyung nam's ability to take a character that was so unlikeable initially and make him so endearing to us viewers truly caught my attention.
I didn't like DOTs. Didn't have a major issue with the heirs (hey its a drama, I don't take dramas seriously unlessly they do something terribly offensive) but goblin remains in my heart. I'm hoping this drama does the same.
