Happy OT Beanies!

For some odd reason, I have put a paused on most of my dramas this week. It's also hard for me to catch up on dramas esp if I stopped midway. A mid-slump is hard to overcome. Oh well.

I did start Anne with an E when I was scrolling through Netflix yesterday. It was a delightful series that I finished season 1 in one sitting >.< Season 2 will be on another day when I'm free.

Stay healthy and safe beanies!

I’m halfway through season 2 Anne with an E. It’s good and tells different parts of the book that Anne of Green Gables doesn’t have on it. I like both casts and stories and don’t find myself comparing the two but enjoying each for what is offers.

My dad called me at the beginning of the week to tell me that he's being tested for Covid. I told him to tell me when and I'll drive him to his appointment. He doesn't have a car so he'd have to catch the bus otherwise and he doesn't have a mask. KY has reopened and today Ohio is supposed to reopen. He told me his appointment was on Friday. I took the day off and told him to let me know when his appointment was.
It was Thursday. (roll eyes)
He missed it.
I helped him make an appointment for next Thursday so he can be tested but he's still waiting to see if the place he was going to get tested has room for him today. He's supposed to call me with their answer and I'll drive down there and take him. OOOOOh parent.

At work right now everything is all about being flexible. And being grateful to still have a job. But, the stay at home order is lifting today. All of the furloughs/reduction of hours goes into effect on Sunday. I've taken today off for my dad (but if he doesn't need me I'm going to go and enjoy the lighting in my room and keep on being sickly) but on Monday I'm supposed to work....where?
Be grateful to have a job
Be grateful to not have my hours reduced
Be grateful to be able to pay all of my bills
And I am.
I am grateful for all of it
And I am trying to be flexible
But its hard knowing that I'm taking today off for family stuff/to be sick and I have no idea where I'll be on Monday. I'm assuming my boss will contact me sometime this weekend and tell me. But...its hard.
Stay safe, Beanies!

You take care as well!

Uncertainty is hard! It was such a relief to me when the government said we were going into lockdown for four weeks (initially) and then I knew where I would be/what I’d be doing for at least the next four weeks. Now we’re coming back out and everything is uncertain again. I guess it’s just one day at a time but it’s not easy!

I'm not sure I 100% recommend it as a binge though. I binged it and spent the first half of the drama wanting to kick our girl right in the shin. 'Fun to watch' is a bit out of my wheelhouse since I mostly prefer torrid dramas. What would I recommend for 'fun'?

- Misaeng: my top Kdrama
- School 2013: I just love it.

With Nirvana in Fire, you need to give it about 6 episodes because there are a lot of characters introduced and the plot threads don't come together early. It's like putting together a puzzle.

Hmm if you didn't like the first episodes of Misaeng it's probably not for you. No worries. I don't like Coffee Prince, which everyone seems to rave about.

Recommendations are kind of tricky because people have such different tastes. Tell you what though, I'm working through two great sources for recommendations. The first is the old list of ratings right here on Dramabeans that javabeans and girlfriday used to maintain. I don't always agree with their assessments--they LOVED Gaksital and Mr. Sunshine, for instance, and I--didn't. (Japanese characters speaking Japanese with a heavy Korean accent!) But it's a good place to start.

The second source was introduced to me by one of the beanies here. Mydramalist. I've added all their personalized recommendations to my plan to watch list. Between the two I've got 136 dramas in my queue!

If you would like some high school romance without much complexity, go for cdrama 'A love so beautiful' or 'The big boss' also if you are Yang Zi fan don't miss on Go Go squid. I really enjoyed all these.
If you want to watch palace drama but without too many Episodes, go for The eternal Love (not one with Yang mi) or Killing of three thousand crows. The former is really funny. For Kdrama as of now I can only suggest Moonlight drawn by clouds. Just seeing park bo gum's smile and mischief, you would laugh a lot

The Chinese drama, JOY OF LIFE, has it all: a great hero, strong women, lots of humor and action, twists and turns, a constant stream of eye candy, and enough episodes to keep you occupied for awhile. One caveat though. They've finished filming only Season 1 and haven't released Season 2 yet. But I think that Season 1 is well worth watching on its own. I also enjoyed STORY OF MINGLAN and STORY OF YANXI PALACE.

For Korean dramas, I'd recommend PRISON PLAYBOOK, MISAENG, and MY AHJUSSI. I suspect, however, that my idea of a rewatch may not meet many people's definition of fun. It's hard for me to get in the mood for RomComs right now so I look instead for worlds in which I can completely immerse myself. For lighter fare, I'd recommend BE MELODRAMATIC, "W", or either of the AGE OF YOUTH dramas.

While I really like W (I still consider it as one of the best dramas ever made, despite its infamous second half), I don't think I can rewatch that show again. I imagine myself being let down by the first half because it's so good and then reminded of what could have been with the bad second half. Kind of how I'm feeling with Eun Jae and her sunbae boyfriend— THEY'RE SO CUTE in season 1 but then I'm reminded that (SPOILERS AHEAD) they broke up in season 2.....

I say ditto on several dramas listed..
This would be my rewatch list. I can't count the times I've rewatched episodes or even whole series of these:
1. Goblin - the cheeky humor, cinematography, cast, OST. ❤️

2. Another Oh Hae Young - for bringing one of the most raw and unique FLs in dramaland. And I just love Eric Moon in this show. A lot of people say he was sidelined but I think his acting for a Melancholic Phlegmatic Sound Director was pretty spot on.

3. Marriage Not Dating - still one of the most hilarious dramas I've watched. And until now I still think Han Groo left dramaland too early.

4. Go Back Couple - Ugh. This show consistently tops my list of fave dramas. It's funny and yet, it makes you think and ponder on how marriages work or crumble. Reminds me of my other favorite hollywood musical, The Last Five Years.

5. One More Happy Ending - this doesn't get much love but this drama was what made me fall in love with my bias, Jung Kyung Ho. ☺️ Soo-hyuk's quiet and yet unconditional love remains to be #MLgoals for me.

6. Bride of the Century - dunno if you guys have heard of this. I don't see a show page on the master recap list. But this one's cute.. Some parts are ridiculous, especially the superstition, but overall, it's one feel-good romcom. ☺️

Yeah, this week's episodes looked rather intriguing, but the previews seem to trivialize the direction the drama is taking. For the moment, it looks like every one of the three main characters has got a fraction of the elusive murderer, the ghostly long haired painter. BTW, the artwork has been very decent up till now, especially the portraits of the dead women. In my book, it's a good sign, I'm not giving up on this drama yet.

As we see this (very creepy and very confusing) drama progressing, the art plays an important part in it. The "morbid" art especially: careful display of the corpse/mummy/ skeleton, a macabre fascination with burial, expressed by the murderers as well as the "scientists" (forensic specialists, visitors of the projected exhibition). We will see where this art of the macabre will lead us.

Happy weekend and keep Beaning On!

An old quarantine post that caught my attention this week talked about the irony of art, which is usually dismissed but now becomes that one thing many turn to in order to get through their lockdown. Some Beanies have noticed and voiced how they watch more K-dramas than usual, while it is probably the same old same old for other Beanies. We are nonstop crazy about K-dramas after all.😜

I tentatively took on a few art challenges in April, only to withdraw them again after a few days because I could not keep at them for 30 days. In the end I did consume and create my fair share of art this month, so I am very gruntled.😄

Camp NaNoWriMo: My goal was to write every day and reach 3000 words. The website only registered 26 entries out of the 30 days, but I did write 4700-4800 words.✏️

Literature: I got stuck after a few chapters in the second book of The Belgariad Pentalogy somewhere in March. Coincidentally the book had 30 chapters, so I could skip a few days in April and still finish it this week.📚

Movies: 30 movies was an unattainable goal, but I watched 17 movies, which is more than half a month and probably a lot more than I have watched the last 5 years combined. Again, because nonstop crazy about K-dramas after all.🎥

2020 has not been a good year (in K-dramaland for me) so far, so I needed this small break. However, I am watching 2 K-dramas again and it feels like I just discovered our little paradise for the first time. I hope I can live watch and spazz over yet another K-drama with some of you in May!❤️

I read the Belgariad in highschool. At that point I was inhaling every bit of fantasy I could find and really enjoyed those books. As I got older, some of David Edding's quirks started to annoy me and I don't enjoy them as much as I do. But I can almost mark my childhood with Eddings books, especially the Belgariad. And all of them are still on the bookcase in my back room.

The Belgariad seems to be relatively unknown around here, which is a shame. It is a bit meatier than my usual entertainment, even though I generally like the fantasy genre. I guess now is the perfect time to savor the slow burn of their quest. And all the snark, oh the snark. Polgara is such a great female character in my opinion, and I wish there were more characters like her. Ce’nedra has some growing up to do before she gets that honor.

Hi beanies. this has been a very sad week for Bollywood. We lost two of our most brilliant actors, Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor. Both had been recovering from cancer and we lost them both in the span of two days. They were actually contrasts if you look closely. Irrfan came from a very humble background and didn't havce the typical Bollywood hero looks whereas Rishi Kappor was the son of Bollywood's first family and was very cute. They were from different generations but they were both such good actors. I just feel very hurt right now so I'll be playing their songs to remember all the good times they gave us.
Currently watching Le Coup De Foudre and liking it so far, although the pace is a bit slower than what I usually like. I'm gonna watch Jealousy Incarnate after this and watch The King: the Eternal Monarch from episode 5 because beanie reviews of the first 4 episodes weren't that positive. I'll just read the recaps if I don't have time.
I've been trying to learn a few recipes and thankfully no kitchen accidents and so it's going well so far

Non-Indian here but I loved Irfan Khan in everything he was amazing, when I told my brother he died he said there are some actors we live though they are not perfect then they are some we can't help but love because they are perfect Like Irfan, my heart literally stopped to hear about it, I adored him in everything especially pike. As for Rishi, I am young so I only know him as the older actor add character, as Ranbir's dad and I liked how he stepped out of his zone in student of the year, you are right they are so different but yet no one can deny that they both imparted their generation and their community at large.

So.... I watched "Third Charm"... Actually Seo Kang Joon made me watch it. I wanted to watch something funny (with him), so I thought hey, let me give a try. And... the first 3 episodes are so funny. It is the cutest thing ever. Episodes 5-11 are okay... (I specially liked episode 11 because it is basically just him). After that.... is... like... why? Why?

I never felt so sorry about a FL story like this. YJ has no parents, her brother has an accident, her daughter, her suicide attempt, all these things, why write her character like this? So much pain, I was so sad by the end of this drama, I could not even remember the laughter of the first episodes anymore. I dont hate her, I just feel really really sorry for her, like I wanna hold her and never let her go.

I need something funny to watch, but watching Extracurricular (I dont love myself lol) and Hospital Playlist.

I actually drove my car yesterday for the first time since March 19, when my state got it's stay-at-home-order. I was a little worried about my car's battery but it started just fine. Now it will probably have another month to rest up before its next exertions. The official purpose was to pick up some stuff from my offce, but on the way back I stopped by my favorite Chinese food take out place, was happy to see that they are still in business, and got the first meal since March that didn't consist of food I had stockpiled in advance. This is what passes for adventure now.

The first time I ventured out of my apartment (to go pick something up from my library, actually) I wound up wandering for like, 2 hours or so. I was just...so happy to not be in my apartment!

You know those dramas where people on a deserted island start dreaming about their favorite food?
Why am I dreaming about cinnamon rolls?

I dreamt about almost getting a haircut. Unfortunately, if I search for something in my dream, I never get it.

Yesterday's dream was about flour shortage causing bread shortage. I literally reminded myself in the dream to hoard bread when I go grocery shopping. Turned out, one bread I wanted was unavailable so I ended up not hoarding bread after all.

The first time I left my house during lockdown (after three weeks) was to go get tested for Covid and I didn’t even get out of the car...(i did not have it).

I have since been to the supermarket twice. That’s three times leaving the property in six weeks....and only on the supermarket trips did I get to escape the company of my adorable yet ever present children 😅

Just finished Extracurricular...holy moly , what a show! Not your typical high school show at all. Great story and flawed characters - really wasn't expecting it to be good so was pleasantly surprised. The unravelling of the ML was well executed. Not one for rewatch pile though.

Speaking of tough watchs, I am now up to date with Couple's World. I have never sworn so much at my TV. The husband needs to take a flying leap off the nearest cliff ...stat.

Couple's World is a drama I simply cannot stay away from - totally addictive. On the other hand I don't always watch as soon as it comes out, because I KNOW that some horrible things will happen. Kind if like watching a plane crash into a train while meteorites are falling all around.

I just type a long post and it's got lost. dang. Wasting my time. grrrrrr. Happy OT beanie and happy Friday. How quarantine on your side of the worlds? Starting next week in Malaysia some company will allow to resume their work but with extra precaution.
On drama side, for this past 2 weeks I'm starting Thai lakorn. I only watch Hospital Playlist and since it's been once a week there's been plenty drama free time. lol. It’s been a while since I watch one and I only remember Tik and never knew the new wave of actors. Haha.
Spoilers:
The Crown Princess – It’s my first Urussaya and Nadech lakorn. From my reading they’re the most popular and favourite koojin (couple) there. Yaya as the princess is so beautiful and badass. Nadech is fit and handsome as the royal guard aside being a soldier with an elite team. For such a badass princess she can’t help getting hurt and for such a leader of elite team he sure make many bad move. The cinematography is beautiful and I really wanna know where they film the drama. Storywise, it’s fun to watch when we ignore the logic. Who let princess enter the crossfire without a bullet vest? Only for the sake of princess to get hurt and pay a debt I think. The love story is beautiful. I just bitter at the end why can she got her man and be a ruler?
Khluen Cheewit – I pick this coz it’s recommended on Yaya drama list. I look at the male lead and can’t help compare him to Nadech. Lol. He seems usual? But, joke on me coz that Mark Prin is hella one fine man. Got a big crush after finish it. It’s a revenge drama about lawyer (ML) wanna get revenge to the actress (FL) becoz she accidently killing his fiancée. Thai also call this a slap kiss drama. I reluctant to pick this at first coz thai revenge can be extreme to my liking. *shivers. And it’s a remake from 90’s drama with a same name that for me doesn’t work in today viewers. But they town down a little with this remake. Still got some pushing and pulling. Imagine Ji Sung in Secret? It’s first Yaya matured role coz she usually play a cutesy character. She deliver the bitchiness but sometimes vulnerable FM really well. Mark and Yaya really have a top notch chemistry here. *whisper (like it better than Yaya-Nadech. Lol) Storywise, it’s angst full with bickering in the middle and lots of cutesy/romance on top.
Ton Rak Rim Rua – I pick this coz I’m start to obsess with Mark Prin. Lol. And Kimberly (FL) is his koojin. But, I just keep fast forwarding. Haha. Nobody deserve Kob, the ML character here. The female lead, Bua is too selfish. And the second lead that like Kob is too pushy. Kob is such a puppy. At the end I just want him not to end with anyone. Lol.
Dang. That such a long post. I need to continue episode 8 of Hospital Playlist after this. lol

For the moment, only the only airing drama I'm watching is The King.

Today I learned how to trick my Netflix account into showing me more dramas, and I'm happy with the stuff that showed up! Unfortunately, didn't access airing dramas, and the new sageuks I spotted I've already watched, but at least now I have loads of older dramas I can watch legally, yay! For the moment, I'm checking out Signal and The Third Charm (glimpsed my hometown on the promotional images, need to see that).

Also, I've finally replaced my lost Kindle (don't ask)! Read 1982 Kim Ji-young in a couple of days, it's depressingly realistic and gripping. Now I'm halfway through The silence of the bones, thanks to the Dramas over Flowers podcast that featured an interview with the writer! It's a noir novel set in Joseon with a damo as protagonist, and it's super visual and entertaining. Feels like watching a sageuk (Haechi feels), it's cool!

Soon I'll need new rading material, Beanies, can you give me good recs?

I am glad to see THE THIRD CHARM is starting to get a look-see from a number of beanies. I noticed @avazilla, ava's TTC comments above. Maybe it is an effect of Seo Kang-joon's performance in WEATHER and folks are checking out some of his other work.
THE THIRD CHARM was not an easy watch. Part of the controversy of TTC was the way it was presented (PR) before it aired. Many thought it would be a rom-com which turned out to be not the case.
Thoise whos stuck with it saw terrific performances by both SKJ and Esom. I have to give extra credit to Esom. She was fully committed to the role come hell or high water.

I am an SKJ fan. I enjoyed AYHT?, TTC and WEATHER.
My favorite SKJ drama though is WATCHER. Loved it. I really hope he returns to "action" in his next drama.
For SKJ fans who have just met him in WEATHER, this guy can throw a punch and take a punch. He is in great shape.
I compared his physicality in WATCHER to Lee Joon-gi's.

I agree. The Third Charm certainly suffered from bad marketing. The promo material read like a romcom. I went into it with full knowledge that it is NOT a romcom and I LOVE that drama. It's a well written thoughtful story and well act by SKJ and Esom. I hope more people give this gem of a drama a chance.

Hi! I haven't watched any dramas in ages but I recently started watching When the Camellia Blooms and love it! It's very refreshing. Anyone have recommendations for more dramas I can watch? I'm not looking for a specific genre, just something not full of cliches with a good plot. Thanks!

Is that the one with Kang Ha neul? Normally I don't care for his acting, but I'm watching him on the latest Traveler 2 where he and Ong Seong Wu and one other are traveling in Argentina. Kang Ha neul is - a bit different from the others. He's kind of a romantic dreamer. Anyway, it's a good show.
But you want something not full of cliches? Good luck! I'd recommend what I like but I always seem to be in the minority. Perhaps if you could name some of your favorite past dramas and name some dramas you didn't like, that would help.

Really wanted to like it for the main actors but felt it was a little slow and cliched. You know, like the bitchy heiress wife, the kids attending the same school (what's the probability of that!), and one of them JUST happened to be bullying the other, etc.

If this week's eps don't improve, I'll probably drop it.

I did ! I really like it so far ! There are flaws in the plot ( that's the difference between a tvn melodrama and a jtbc one LOL ) but it's lovely .... the interesting point for me is how the characters have changed through years ...that makes me curious ..

I watched the first 2 episodes and really enjoyed it. I liked the set-up, with her being divorced (and a labour rights activist?) and him just coming out of prison (and a rich son-in-law). I also liked that it took its time - it seemed to savour every moment - and the reunion in the snow might have been cliched but was so cinematic!

I was mesmerised by it.

Currently only watching The King from the airing shows because of WFH situation but I still have a long list to catch upon on dramas side.
Korea :
The King : from the 4th episode I really wish that the drama pick a little pace. But due to LMH, I won't dodge the show.
Romantic Doctor 2: I'm half way through this show, and it's every moment is so intriguing. That open heart CPR just sold me.
Chocolate : I like this kind of healing dramas where there is no unnecessary action or drama. The way the show displayed such sensitive issues, just took my heart
Crash Landing : still catching up. Too much flooded with dramas.
Because this is my first life : I've already watched this, and I really want something like this. Pls, if anyone can suggest something so light still real one.
China:
A love so beautiful : I finished this already, and I really liked it. The only complain I had was even after following her own dream, xiao chi couldn't be more successful while all other friends were already at pick of their life. And she should have make Jiang Sheng waited more or atleast played hard to get.

Be Melodramatic might be what you're looking for after Because this is My First Life in that the women in it feel real. It's funny and sad in equal measures.

If you haven't seen Just Between Lovers, it's a healing drama that I think is 100 times better than Chocolate. The incident in the beginning of the drama is based on a real life mall collapse (similar to the one in Chocolate).

Delightful Highlights of the Week:
1. The TRUCK OF DOOM is back!! (Born Again). Been a while, and I was afraid that he had been usurped by that evil Backhoe of Doom in Forest.
2. Fatal Promise (my current hate watch). Everyone is batshit crazy, stupid, overacting, makjang idiots. So the same as last week.
3. Revenge Are Us (Chef Moon). Not the best drama ever, but I can't help liking the lead actress in this role. Time for payback to the evil people (ever notice how the same actors always play evil folks?).

Forgot to mention the new Taiwan drama on NetFlix - The Victim's Game.
Totally unlike any Taiwan drama I have ever seen. Most T-dramas are pretty saccharine-sweet - this is NOT one of those. Might be a hard watch for some, rated MA for gore and such.

Have you watched Some Day or One Day? That one isn't sweet and it's really good.
But I find most t-dramas start out silly but the silliness doesn't last.
