Happy Friday Beanies!

It has been a long time since I last watched a Korean drama with my sister. We are watching The King: Eternal PPL together every weekend, and it made me realize how hard it is to watch dramas with other people. On one hand, it's fun to have someone who squeals with me whenever Woo Doo-hwan is on screen, on the other hand, I can't abuse the fast forward button whenever I get bored because my sister is trying to understand the show. The last time we watched a series together was in 2015 and I actually felt liberated when we decided to watch dramas separately, as my tastes in dramas began to change as I entered college and I started to become annoyed about our schedules not matching anymore. Watching dramas separately made me start and appreciate both ongoing and completed dramas, and thanks to that I was able to discover some gems (aka dramas my sister will never watch because she doesn't know the leads), namely Misaeng and Healer.

But my kdrama watching experience as a kid was also fun thanks to my sister. I remember buying illegal DVDs with her back in 2009 😂 because we really wanted to watch a drama that isn't dubbed in Filipino. We had to pay half a dollar each to watch Secret Garden, as well as Heartstrings (with the most awful subs ever) and other dramas back then. Our mornings would start with watching dramas and we would even watch them until it is past our bedtime. I never thought watching The King would bring back happy childhood memories and a solid sisterhood dedicated to WDH.

I miss those days too...and the samchun with the DVDs at the corner store 🤭. Kwon Sang hoo in Sad Love Story and Sir Min in Jewel in the Palace are some of the ones that stand out when I remember mutual the mutual squeeing my sisters and I did. Sadly our tastes have changed and I'm the only one who still watches dramas religiously. My one sister loves sageuks/fusion sageuks though and I've run out of recs for her.

Meteor Garden and Lovers in Paris (dubbed in Filipino) opened up the world of Asian dramas for me!

My love for Asian dramas actually started as a young kid with Filipino dubbed Taiwanese dramas (from Lavender which I couldn't really remember the plot now, Dolphin Bay, 100% Senorita, Meteor Garden, and Frog Prince). I think I started watching Kdramas around the time when Endless Love started to air again, but my love (and subtle addiction) actually started when I managed to marathon My Girl as a kid!

I experience the same thing. My sister and I rarely watch together now due to differences in tastes and the increased accessibility of dramas. Although one good thing about it is that collectively, we get to watch more dramas and somehow filter them for each other 😁

But now we found a drama we're both interested in -- Mystic Pop-up Bar! 😆

I find that watching dramas on your own time and pace can also be fun. And yes, we both manage to also watch more dramas and somehow filter them for each other too!

It's weird that we do not really love The King that much, but we're sticking out for it for different reasons (the only thing in common is WDH lmao).

I love watching dramas with my sister but it’s definitely hard not to be able to FF sometimes 😅. Also having to wait to watch - I can’t watch during day and she often works nights so there are only small windows available. So we don’t do it often, but it’s fun when we do. Honestly we probably get along better now than we did as kids - our tastes have gotten more similar as we get older 😄

My sister also works during the night but since she works at home (for now), we manage to watch an episode every weekend after she's done with her work because that's also the time when I wake up!

That works out well! We just wait for her days off/the weeks she’s on day shift because she gets home at like 3am. I’m hanging out for the next round because we have two episodes left in our current drama and I want to finish it!

My sister just told me she is watching the king as well. We haven’t seen each other since early March, although we live in the same town. I couldn’t get past the first 3 episodes. It’s looks like I’ll have to restart it. It might be a way we can talk about anything other than COVID again. 😆

It was actually Woo Doo-hwan that kept me and my sister watching the show (because let's be honest, the plot only moved significantly after episode 11, so I really understand people who dropped the show early on) 😂

We don't really converse about other things (aside from food, Rowoon, and SF9) but my sister and I often talk about WDH. It is really fun to talk about WDH.

My friend told me about an ace chatting app. I'm having fun exploring it.

Where Your Eyes Linger On episode 3. Watched the first two without subs. Watched episode 1 twice so far. It is so perfect, I'm internally screaming. The episodes are short but pack a punch.
The King On episode 5. I'm excited for her to go with him to Kingdom of Corea.
Oh, My Baby On episode 3. Still just thriller to have Nara eonnie back on my screen.
King is Not Easy On episode 13. I just started this drama Tuesday. Am I actually binging?
My Girlfriend's Boyfriend On episode 3. Havent watched since Monday
The Brightest Star in the Sky On episode 7. Haven't watched since Sunday or Monday. I thought it was 6 episodes for some reason. I was surprised by it being 40 odd. The leads are fine. Go Zitao! But the story and side characters is weak.
Hyung Second watch. It cracked me up and made me sad.

I'm still working through EXO media. I've listened to all Exo-K music, their Japanese album, Suho solo, Xiumin solo, Lay solo, Baekhyun solo, EXO-SC, watched a Kris movie, a Chanyeol movie and started a Tao drama

I thought I'd be released back to work after my psych leave today, but there was miscommunication in the office. Maybe next week!

At such young age i've suffers, faced, experienced so much and seen extreme of so many sides that i have lost too many feels.

But there is a catch here - You don't need to experience everything to have a view or to have to relate with someone or come up with the most basic excuse "yeah, i can understand".

I dislike this narrative of "i can feel your pain, i can understand you, i can see what your are goin through". Its mostly fake. Basic makeup kit of facemasks.

Then comes congratulations, consoles, and all greetings. Too much in the makeup kit.

Answer is already up.

I didn't comment in Drinking Solo news because for me those who do not value this precious life deserve no sympathy whatsoever.
These pathetic identities don't even deserve any air or attention at all. Everyone single human being goes through life struggles - emotional and mental and etc. Yet there are millions who sleep, wake up next day, look at the new sunrise and try to survive. Most human are lazy, lousy and run away from hard work. Have fickle feelings, emotions and moral character. As soon as wind start to blow they seek company and try to hide their inefficiency behind society, community, group and coterie.

Certainly, I'm not much fond of most of human beings and Find Fictional Human characters more humane and competent.

Hi Everyone and Happy Weekend! To our Muslim Beanies, Happy Aidil Fitri and Eid Mubarak! (I hope I got it right!) 😬 😁

I'm only watching "The King :EM" and enjoying the heck out of it by playing the game of deciphering clues and making both wild and calculated guesses as to plot details. I'm not a particular fan of LMH, but he has exceeded expectation in this show. Therefore I'm a fan of the character he is playing. It will be interesting to watch how the last 6 episodes manage or do not manage to wrap up the complicated possibilities that show has opened up. A steady flow of info on the logic of the magic would be nice about now, but I can still manage on my crazy speculations! LOL.

I’m also loving the Lee Gon character. And I think LMH is a swoon-worthy ML especially in The King. Have you watched ep11? I just finished it and boooo I was a bit disappointed. Not sure if others found this ep funny or better in terms of editing or anything, but I found it lacks that kind of magical, fairy tale feeling along with visually pleasing scenes. It’s become somewhat banal and boring for me. Luckily, I got something cheesy (which I now like) at the end. That kinda saved my day.

Looking forward to ep12, hoping that it won’t become a horror, action-thrilling Fierry Priest 2 sort of show.

To me, this drama ticks all the boxes of cracktastic-ness: it's so over the top and ridiculously cheesy, but I'm totally into it. During this episode I gasped and laughed out loud like a kid. So much fun! Especially now, with ruthless Gon and kick-ass Taeul... So good!

Dark!Gon, modern sageuk warrior, leading the cavalry charge and slashing his way through a phalanx of baddies... Tae-eul with just two bullets left taking a last stand... Lee Gon commanding the entire Civil Defense unit to "Protect her! The future Queen of Corea!"... isn't *magical* enough for you? 😂😂

Kinda made me wonder though that it took Yeong/Eun-seob being sidelined/injured for Gon to become *this!*

Haha.. I prefer the term ‘cheesy’ over ‘magical’ as the description of the last scene. 😂 Whichever word we choose, however, the last scene is just great and ohh-so-over-the-top.

Did you Beanies catch when TE gave out that heavy sigh upon seeing LG in that scene? OMG that was a bit out of any FL characters that I had to lol. Honestly, I haven’t thought that any FL is allowed to (at least on screen) give out such a manly snort like that! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's both cheesy and over-the-top, but the kind you're willing to forgive.😆 I did hear that snort, though I was a bit distracted that she was just standing there waiting for Gon to slash through when there was an entire fleet of police cars with guns pointed just a few steps to the left.

Ah, so that was the Civil Defense Unit! I was wondering why they were all in white shirts, didn't look like an army/police uniform to me, more like waiters (that's how they dress in my region) 😋

I just called them Civil Defense Unit 😅😅, as opposed to let's say, military or naval, to refer to the whole team. Gon leads the mounted cavalry and the Royal Guards (which would probably be his own special strike force). The helicopters would be the airborne infantry unit, and we also see police cars and SWAT teams.

It would have been really awesome if Gon and Yeong would fight together. But perhaps they're saving that for the epic fight with Rim.

2

@bluecouchpotato, I'm sure they won't waste WDH's riding skills, I'm also counting on an epic show-down on horseback! 😊

Hello all:
I hope everyone is doing well. We've jumped from winter right into summer. A trend in NY. Spring is now made up of a lot of summer days. Not much happening except me trying to finish a few stories and a few books, and trying to lose weight. Hopefully, all the garden produce will help me to become a healthy eater who hydrates with tons of cucumber, watermelon, and tomatoes. We shall see.
Dramas:
Born Again -- The writer of this drama had better show us where all the wicked folks surrounding our heroes came from. If i don't get a back history on the squicky writer and her murderous daughter, i'm going to get annoyed. After all, if three people are dealing with karmic issues, shouldn't the folks around them also be dealing with it as well? Or does destiny only concern itself with lovers? It'll be a truly silly creative game to have absolutely no previous-life stories of everyone in this collective of gray and shady people. And speaking of shades of gray, has there ever been such an unbelievably pure white as snow character as our heroine?

Good Casting -- I am slowly (no, quickly) losing patience with this. It just keeps losing my interest more and more.

King Maker: Changer of Destinies -- Looks good so far but that was the most twisty, thorny convoluted way of making a shaman's daughter also be a princess that i have ever seen. Writer-nim, you could've done better.

Old School Intern - This is good but i so wish the kdrama habit of overplotting and over-complicating stories would ease up.

Mystic Pop-up Bar -- I'm loving this so much. This has heart, humor, mystery, supernatural stuff, and good-ole kdrama forgiveness and redemption arc. Everyone so far is doing such a great job at depicting their characters.

I have to get back to Extracurricular when i can deal with the stress. Most everything else i've dropped. Rugal is just so silly to me.

Chinese Dramas

Winter Begonia --BL drama done well although i still feel there is some kind of attraction between these two guys. I love Shang Xirui. He is so petulant. I have two favorite characters this season. Weirdly, they are both seriously annoying. But i love them because they are so emotional, and passionate. Their emotions rule them. One of them is the righteous cop out to protect his fated love from a serial killer. Yep, one of the reasons i keep watching Born Again. He is rude, vaguely unethical if he's out to get the criminal, and a total dick. The other is just plain petty. And that is Shang Xirui. He's very self-righteous and an artist, and he will mess up performances simply to get back at someone who wronged him. Apparently, i'm in love with petulant righteous characters who resist bending the knee to anyone.
I love the tagline for this drama:
"Do you know what a confidant is?"
"I Know. I have been listening to you all this time."
Anyway, best line of the morning:
Hero respected business man trying to convince Opera singer to run away...

... away from upcoming danger: "There'll be trouble."
Opera Singer: "I know there'll be trouble. I caused it"
"They'll execute you if you perform. Don't go onstage. "
"Master Cheng, you're used to saving damsels in distress. But i'm not a damsel in distress. I'm a hero too."
Ancient Detective -- oh this was so much fun! Finished on a cliffhanger and i fell in love with the actor who played Ye Xiao Xiao.
I realize that my favorite asian actors are those who are troubled, extremely 4D, or are crazy nutcases. I can't imagine their pain or struggles to be their authentic weird selves in such strict societies but i sense their spiritual strength. So i'm loving Zheng Yin. He's always so dang odd.
Interestingly, when a BL novel is turned into a bromance drama, the viewer gets to see some wonderful scenes of male friendships the depth and tenderness of which isn't usually seen in films. The scenes expand our notion of what male friendships can be like without adding the sexual element. Winter Begonia is about the friendship of a married businessman and an opera singer. So to see the macho society guy and the arty guy be friends is quite sweet and enlightening. The fact that they have others of the opposite sex that they love romantically adds to the whole beauty of the friendship. Ancient Detective wasn't originally BL but it had one of those friendships as well where the more macho male lead was absolutely babying the non-martial art detective. Tender male leads are so hard to write or act out without folks being triggered into homophobia.

Romance of Tiger and Rose -- fun trope. Kind of like Extraordinary You merged with all the time slip cdramas.

I've Fallen For You -- i started watching this a while. it is so much fun. I dropped it although i loved it because i was getting stressed out by the plot. Nothing out of the ordinary but sometimes i just can't deal with the plot.

Happy weekend, all.

Hello Beans! I hope you guys have a great weekend. I started to watch "Strangers from Hell" and "The world of married". But thats not what I want to talk about. There was an article today in Korea news about dramas that I found interested. The title is: "Young actors move to online platforms as TV producers woo bankable veterans " The paragraphs I found interest were: "Young actors and actresses in their 20s and early 30s have been losing their presence on the South Korean small screen as producers are not willing to take chances by casting new faces in marquee roles.

The fantasy romance "The King: Eternal Monarch," starring Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun, and the mystery drama "Born Again," starring Jang Ki-yong and Jin Se-yeon, seem to be the only two TV series led by young stars out of dozens of soap operas and shows currently on air in the country."

Interesting issue, the age thing! I didn't read the article, but where I live the entertainment industry is also more focused on the 30-40 year old generation. Here, it's got to do with demographics: there was a baby boom by the late 70's/early 80's, and there are simply more media and entertainment consumers with that age than younger ones - because the birth rate has been steadily going down. Could it be that the same thing is happening in SK?

I think it mostly the trend, like idol trend when yoona-IU-Suzy leading the weekend drama but then now we have Kim Da Mi, Jeon Mi Do, Woo Jin Ah, Kim Hye Yoon, Kim Kang Hoon, Lee Jae Wook and I think many newcomer is actually gets a good reception.

the trend is serious drama with "sprinkle" of makjang so older actor/actress is getting the big deal. It's the drama trend, when we have school drama trend again, we may see more young actor.

More about the article: "Moreover, TV dramas starring young actors and actresses, such as KBS' fantasy romance "Welcome" and tvN's romance "A Piece of Your Mind," both of which ended last month, received poor viewership ratings of 1 percent and soon disappeared from viewers' consciousness.

On the other hand, this year's hit TV series, including tvN's romantic comedy "Crash Landing On You," JTBC's melodrama "The World of the Married" and the medical drama "Hospital Playlist" on tvN, feature long-running stars, like Hyun Bin, Son Ye-jin, Kim Hee-ae and Jo Jung-suk."

I like it, tbh. I think it's great seeing these actresses in their 40s and 50s headlining dramas because it used to be that once actresses reached 40 (or even just got married) it was rare to see them headlining shows.

"Bankable" is the key word because production costs are rising and network fees declining. Production companies can recoup 30% of production budget from PPL. Advertisers are more apt to buy shows with known stars with ratings track record. Producers look to an actor's followers, endorsements, brand ranking and box office as a hedge against failure.

It used to be an actor worked their way up to a lead role. For example, Seo Ji-hye has been second lead on various projects, but after Crash Landing, she landed her first lead project. But a few years ago, producers started to cast idols because of their avid fan base. That has been hit or miss.

Jung Hae In is pretty bankable, but A Piece of Your mind, got 1% rating views. Same with Park Min Young. Some of these actors are good and internationally, recognized, but rating wise, it seems not.

This was the first time that Jung Hae In had to carry a series as the first lead. His prior two shows were lead by strong and popular actresses, Son Ye Jin and Han Ji Min.

I like seeing veterans in roles. I like a lot of the younger actors too though. There are a few actors that keep getting lead roles that baffle me.

Interesting read. I Guess it is a factor of trends. with saying that, I think having them doing web dramas, do give them acting experience in smaller scale without being in the eyes of people bashing them for their acting. Also some of them like they from A-teens have moved to prime time dramas. Beside I think many in same age group do not watch dramas on tv. Anyway, maybe we gonna see more actors and actress moving from web drama too prime time dramas. It do seems like it is moving that way to me.

But there is drama coming about leads in their 20 and 30 :) "Dinner mate", "Sweet munchies", "The probability of going from friends to lover", "My prettiest moment", "Do do sol sol la la sol", "The moment", "Sunbae, don´t put on that lipstick", "True beauty". So people in that age range is coveret. I know there is more coming. Anyway, with that said I do like that we have storys with characters in different age group. Give us a very wide range of storys. :)

It's relatable as the young actors and actresses work so hard throughout their youth to get into limelight and if we compare some of the dramas with good acting and stories are not getting good ratings just because they do not have famous actors. It also depends on the audience as they might like to watch more mature actors.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Thursday was a holiday, so many people and I get to enjoy a four day long weekend! Real life was uneventful, so I was hoping and planning to spend this little vacation on the sofa behind my laptop screen. Inspired by the K-drama challenge on the fan walls, I was working on a shortlist to narrow down my choices for my next K-drama pick, but I had to start over every 5 minutes, because I want to watch all completed K-dramas at the same time.😅

I had my schedule figured out last week: Oh My Baby Thursday and Friday, watching with my friend on Friday and/or Saturday, and Sunday-Wednesday for 4 episodes of my completed K-drama pick. My friend and I are finishing Sassy Go Go! tonight and starting on Reply 1997 next weekend. However, due to some social (distanced) gatherings at the beginning of the week I barely had time to watch anything during the Sunday-Wednesday slot, and it seems like the next week will be even busier in general. So I figured that it would be wiser to postpone a third K-drama to manage my responsibilities a bit better. Watching 2 K-dramas a week would be more than enough. Ahem.🤭

After finishing the third Oh My Baby episode I had to amuse myself yesterday evening with a movie, because episode 4 was not available with subtitles until today. I checked if Oh My Baby was available today…and found out that Mystic Pop-up Bar and Old School Intern each had aired two episodes already! It would have been great and very convenient if I had known that yesterday evening….😈

So I hope to watch Oh My Baby episode 4 tomorrow if I do not find the time today and the rest of the weekend I will be figuring out whether I want to risk a third and fourth K-drama or not!🤣 It is nice to have K-drama dilemmas instead of real life dilemmas for once!😂

Four episodes in, I am loving Oh My Baby as it far exceeds my expectation. And Ep 4 shows the depth and potential this drama could be in not just about the dilemma faced by career women but also the eternal truth of our present is shaped by our past in both good and bad ways. There are great LOL moments but the heart tugging ones are poignantly felt.

I watch it for Jang Nara and Park Byung Eun but am pleasantly surprised by how swoony Go Joon is. And, is there anything Jang Nara can't do these days? Every role she plays are so convincingly portrayed - and no exception here. Ha-ri might just be one of the most admirable FL characters this year - together with Professor Chae Song-Hwa from Hospital Playlist.

So pleased to have Oh My Baby to fill the big void when HP finishes next week.

I just finished Ep 11 of The King. It's another WTF episode. Dont worry, no spoiler, just a rant...

The plot has more hole than my hubby fave shirt that I've been dying to throw away. The directing/ editing has got to be one of the worst I've seen in recent dramas. In fact, i wish someone would've take all the scenes that they have shoot and redo the whole editing and piecing the story in a whole different way. It won't fix the plot holes, but at least a somewhat more watchable show?

And yet I'm still watching. It's the first thing i watch on weekend. What is wrong with me??? 🙈

Seriously?

I loved it. Especially seeing how the PM is pulling its claws and appreciating LMH almost almost with a dejavu from Feith.

In addition, some theories become concrete. LG came from the future. I agree that the editing could be a thousand times better because the work of the actors and setting is excellent. Pdnim will have something to say?

I want a snyder cut for The King! Kkkk

Are you asking Seriously as a genuine question or a rhetorical one?

If it's a genuine question, the answer is Yes. Yes that i think the plots have more holes than hubby holey shirt. Yes that i want different director/editor.

If it's a rhetorical question as in you can't believe someone may feel that way, well unfortunately I do. I like it enough to still watch it and i care enough to want it to do a better job. But as it is now, it just fell short for me.

Yap. I'm definitely under the King spell. Some people comment that Tae-eul love confession felt rush and out of the blue, and I share that feeling. But to be fair, i would've melt like a pile of goo if someone that looks like Lee Min Ho swept me off my feet on a white horse off to his palace full of gold button... 😄 Lee Min Ho is not even my Oppa and he's still able to mesmerized me.

I do like to travel normally but lockdown has stopped that for now. It's a bit depressing. So I'm afraid that watching dramas is all I do when I'm not working.

LT, I’m watching this show on Apple + called Mythic Quest. It’s awesome. Main female lead is an Australian coder. I never hear Australian accents on TV, so it’s totally refreshing.

And Fantasy101, I’m from middle America in every sense. Vietnamese. Love Korean food, and make it on occasion. Have a blog if you want to see what I’ve made. Watch all kinds of dramas—Korean, Chinese, Viet, Thai, but talk mostly about kdramas. Welcome!

Welcome! I'm in the UK. I've been reading a lot since lockdown, probably because all my music has stopped. All the money I used to spend on take-away coffees, I now spend on buying books.

Other than that, I write, cook and play computer games.

Considering the current situation, I am in need of fluff ( along with rainbows and puppies). My current watchlist only consists of Good Casting which I am enjoying tremendously but I need more shows.

Does anyone have any recommendations? (I think I have watch most fluffy korean dramas by now so cdramas recommendations are also welcome.)

Thank you in advance!

Hi all! This week was a step closer to normal life, with the kids back at school. It was very quiet and weird at home without them.

Tried out Mystic Pop Up Bar and it seems good so far, keen for next week’s episodes.

Watching The King: The Eternal Monarch. Ep. 11-the pace has picked up and things are moving. We finally got to see Tae Eul make some badass moves!
Otherwise, I'm having fun watching CDrama rom com About Is Love over at Tencent YouTube Channel. It's going quickly since they are posting 2 episodes every day. Such a fun, breezy watch!

Hi @Table122000 Thanks for the link to About Is Love. I don't know if I've got time to start a new show. I seem to be able to manage only one.

The King has finally laid all it's pieces on the board and one phase of the obvious part of the fight is done. We have to wait for the next move and try to anticipate it.

Besides having to face LL directly, LG will also need to decide what to do about the many doppelgangers in both worlds. Of course if the preview is right, and he can keep the doors to the universe open, then it solves a bit of the problem, but it also leave open the risk that someone else like LL will come along to try and play god.

Well my Saturday evening intention was to watch episode 11 and 12 of TKEM....but my research paper pulled me away.

That being said, I have been watching a lot of K-Dramas, a lot at a time or a little bit at a time. I'm currently mid-way through Healer which is older I know, but very captivating! Ji Chang Wook is better here than in K2.
Man to Man was a head scratcher and it was hard to reconcile the FL as the same person who was in Mr. Sunshine.
Almost done with My Sassy Girl (also old I know) which is not half-bad.
On my list is to start Hospital Playlist and Mystic Pop-Up Bar.

But in the meantime, have to finish this paper. (And if anyone out there works in sustainable development goals and higher education, let me know!)

The King is not showing tonight. I am missing it in a weird way. I watch it week after week, even though I don't feel invested in it. But I can't not watch it. Isn't that weird? I get teary-eyed over cheesy scenes that I know are meant to make me teary-eyed. I don't get the Great Love Story, but I try not to think too much, and I just watch mindlessly - I honed this skill from Forest, and it helps a lot, really - overthinking tends to make me question everything, and once I start, I can't stop. So, I kind of vacuum my head clean of pesky thoughts, and just let LMH and his horse and his whip take over. And Lee Gon and Tae eul's fierce sweeping hugs get me every time. They are just so grandiose. Like Gone with the Wind. Rhett and Scarlett. They are so ROMANTIC. They knock the breath out of me. I do know that they are setting me up for heartbreak, and aiming to squeeze every last tear from these blinking, befuddled eyes.
