My Unfamiliar Family: Episode 3

Even the longest-held secrets are in danger of one day being revealed, and when they are, the consequences could be dire. To say this family has a communication issue would be an understatement. Secrecy and silence have eroded some relationships and threaten to erode others, and this oppressive pattern will continue until everyone chooses honesty. Now it’s our younger daughter’s turn to grapple with a new secret of her own and decide whether to follow her desires or her conscience.

EPISODE 3

Eun-hee laughs in disbelief after hearing Geon-joo is engaged to his girlfriend of nine years who’ll be joining him in Korea soon. Kyung-ok thinks Eun-hee is laughing at her until Eun-hee clarifies she experienced a traumatic breakup with a boyfriend of nine years.

At her desk, Eun-hee gets a message from Geon-joo offering to cook dinner for her at his place. He has something to tell her. While she contemplates her response, Chan-hyuk texts he wants to meet for lunch.

Ji-woo arrives at the hospital just in time to hear Sang-shik ask if Eun-joo knows he’s not her biological father. Jin-sook adamantly says she doesn’t, and they promised never to speak of it. Ji-woo listens in shock.

Eun-joo calls her dad to check on him right as Eun-hee calls her mom. Ji-woo comes in as his parents talk to his sisters in turn and observes his mom thoughtfully.

Tae-hyung stops by home to get his laptop and catches Eun-joo working. She’s been freelancing for a while now and isn’t sure why she didn’t tell him about it. When she comments they’ll talk about it later, he dismissively says there’s no need.

Fed up with his disinterest in her and seemingly everything, she wonders if he’s always been like this or became this way. Tae-hyung calls her sensitive in that same apathetic tone. Isn’t she late for a meeting? Eun-joo ambiguously replies “too late” and leaves.

Holding back tears, Eun-joo marches back inside. It’s better to resolve the issue than be distracted at work. Tae-hyung doesn’t see the issue until Eun-joo throws out, “You’re keeping a secret from me, aren’t you?”

Strained silence stretches, and Eun-joo rewords it to ask if he’s worried about something. She’ll help if he tells her. Tae-hyung scoffs ungraciously that he’ll tell her whenever he has a secret she can help resolve. If he’s so bothered by the idea of family helping each other, she’ll just listen. He can tell her anytime. Tae-hyung stands silently as she goes.

Ji-woo drives his parents home from the hospital and asks who his mom was talking to on the phone. It was the cultural center where Jin-sook takes literature classes. Sang-shik speculates she’s writing poetry and pouts when she snaps at him.

Jin-sook had forgotten about Sang-shik’s three pouts. We see his upset pout, request pout and proud pout in flashback. In the car, Sang-shik whines about wanting to call her “Miss Sook” until Ji-woo coughs uncomfortably.

Chan-hyuk meets Eun-hee at work, hiding around back so as not to start rumors. Ha. He asks Eun-hee when the meditation center’s book is coming out; the author won’t pay his company for the promotional materials until its release.

Eun-hee offers to lend him the money by taking out a work loan, but he just wants her to buy him a meal. Over lunch, Eun-hee stuns Chan-hyuk with the uncanny coincidence of Geon-joo having a nine-year girlfriend.

They assume he wants to break the news to Eun-hee over dinner, but Chan-hyuk worries about her going to his house. “Do you think I’ll make the same mistake twice?” Chan-hyuk: “I do.” Heh. Given her experience being on both sides of a cheating situation, she should break it off coolly and cleanly.

And in walks Geon-joo with the entire staff. Eun-hee tries and fails to blend into the background. Kyung-ok joins her table (all smiles at Chan-hyuk) while the others sit nearby, and Eun-hee makes introductions. Chan-hyuk notes Geon-joo, who gives him his card, with interest.

Meanwhile, a woman arrives at Geon-joo’s place and wanders the (amazing) apartment. She finds their photo stashed in a drawer and puts it back on display.

At the restaurant, Kyung-ok interrogates Chan-hyuk. Geon-joo peeks over with interest as Chan-hyuk says he’s known Eun-hee for 15 years, and he’s unmarried. Eun-hee intervenes and says Chan-hyuk has someone. Thirsty Kyung-ok immediately announces it’s time to leave. Chan-hyuk struggles to conceal his amusement at the whole situation.

On the way home, Sang-shik wants to stop and buy something, so he politely asks Jin-sook for spending money. Ji-woo gapes at the bizarreness, even taking a photo of Sang-shik holding Jin-sook’s hand. They go to a neighborhood fruit stall to buy tangerines, which Sang-shik says Jin-sook likes.

When the owner recommends melons he knows Jin-sook likes, Sang-shik gets jealous and demands to know if she likes tangerines or melons better. Oh my gosh. Jin-sook just buys them both to the owner’s amusement. Ji-woo plays it safe and wholeheartedly agrees tangerines are better, muttering that it’s like he got a little brother. Ha.

Sang-shik is still bitter and starts asking Ji-woo about the stall. Ji-woo shares that the owner used to be a professor. Sang-shik doesn’t understand how the owner has never met him before when the stall has been there for years. He notices the owner looking friendly with Jin-sook, so he marches over to Jin-sook and shoots the owner a hostile look.

Eun-joo arrives for her client meeting with a professor. Oh, she’s a lawyer. At the clinic, Tae-hyung treats Hyo-seok for the wound on his hand which he got in a “lover’s quarrel.” Tae-hyung doesn’t think you can call it that when a partner stabs you with fabric scissors. No freakin’ kidding.

When Tae-hyung tells him to come to his senses, Hyo-seok throws it back at him. “My girlfriend knows you,” he says ominously. Tell Eun-joo or he will. Whoa.

The professor encourages Eun-joo to work full time again. It shouldn’t be a problem since she doesn’t have kids (which he attributes to her husband being “weak”). He then lecherously notes her style has changed, and she’s at her peak. Ew.

Eun-joo smiles as she says the same can’t be said for his papers – there’s a lot of patent issues. Heh. And he should stop seeking help from his female students. Undaunted, the gross professor calls her cute but immature.

Tae-hyung calls Eun-joo under the watchful eye of Hyo-seok, saying he’ll pick her up for dinner. He has something to tell her. She tells him to stop by the university to meet the professor; he’s concerned Tae-hyung is weak. Ha!

As they walk back, Chan-hyuk remarks that he can see Eun-hee has feelings for Geon-joo. She even tried to say he had a girlfriend so Geon-joo wouldn’t misunderstand. Eun-hee argues she’s just surprised by how much they have in common. Uh-huh.

Chan-hyuk brings up a habit he got from his mom which gets Eun-hee talking about DNA. He scoffs at her pseudo-science, but she says she researched DNA because her and Eun-joo are so different. Chan-hyuk claims that’s just because Eun-joo is cool and perfect. Eun-hee is indignant, but when he goes to leave, she holds him back.

At home, Sang-shik latches onto the familiar photo of him and Jin-sook from 1982. Jin-sook isn’t in the mood to reminisce, but Sang-shik can’t do anything else. He sweetly peels a tangerine and offers it to her. Jin-sook observes that he’ll realize how flustering his actions are when his memories return.

We flash back to the times he complained at her for being sick, concerned more about the inconvenience than her wellbeing. Now, she tells him, “If words could kill, we’d both have been dead long ago.”

At the bus stop, Eun-hee shows Chan-hyuk the CCTV footage of her dad. Eun-hee remembers how Chan-hyuk takes his coffee but barely knows the basics about her own family. Chan-hyuk thinks it’s hard to see what’s closest to you.

When he returns, Chan-hyuk is surprised to see Ji-woo back at work since he gave him time off. While they talk, KIM YOUNG-OH (Park Jong-wook) taps Seo-young to ask her to move the camera. She screams and jumps away from him, seeming truly frightened. Chan-hyuk chides Young-oh for not doing it himself and glances worriedly at a traumatized-looking Seo-young.

In the car, Tae-hyung tells Eun-joo he’ll be attending a seminar in New Zealand next week. Eun-joo asks if she should go with him, and he goes silent. She assures him not to worry – she won’t go. But is that really want he wanted to talk to her about? Tae-hyung doesn’t answer.

The celebratory family dinner is awkwardly quiet and not at all celebratory. Eun-hee tries to liven things up, but it’s a bust. Everyone stares in shock when Sang-shik makes a wrap and gives it to Jin-sook who doesn’t want it. Ji-woo takes the wrap instead and feeds his dad one, trying to stave off the awkward.

Tae-hyung gives Sang-shik a checkup while he’s there and recommends that he take it easy. He advises the family not to try to force him to remember things and encourages Sang-shik to enjoy this time of being 22 again.

Outside, Eun-joo slips Ji-woo money for their parents since Sang-shik can’t work, but Ji-woo is being weirdly formal with her. Eun-hee rushes out to meet Geon-joo and is stopped by Eun-joo. She scolds Eun-hee for acting immature and accuses her of being the groveling type when she dates.

Ji-woo gets irritated with their bickering and is taken aback when they join forces against him. Ha. Eun-joo brings up a comment he made at dinner about being the son who “will carry on the family line.” The sisters berate him for being sexist – they taught him better than that. Ji-woo whines that they really do resemble each other.

Eun-hee stalls outside Geon-joo’s apartment, ruminating over Eun-joo’s words. Geon-joo goes out to find her, worried she wouldn’t remember his apartment number and didn’t have his cell number. He suggests going up, but Eun-hee would rather talk at the café nearby.

Geon-joo comes right out with it: he’s dating someone. Her reaction tips him off that she already knew, and she informs him it’s the office gossip. But this isn’t what he wanted to tell her. He’s actually brazen enough to say he thought long and hard and decided he wants to keep seeing her.

Eun-hee is thrown but thanks him for his interest. She’s not going to be the other woman, though. Geon-joo claims he and his partner have been slowly drifting apart for a while and barely even talk on the phone anymore. Eun-hee understands all too well.

Before responding, she imagines Eun-joo beside her, asking for clarification about what “drifting apart” means. Do both partners agree? Now that he’s honestly told her, Geon-joo hopes they can keep meeting.

The following day, Sang-shik meets Man-ho and inspects his truck. Although he doesn’t consciously remember his job, muscle memory kicks in when Sang-shik gets in the truck. Man-ho whispers to Jin-sook that it’s not dementia, right? Ha.

Sang-shik excitedly ushers Jin-sook into the truck. Man-ho chuckles that Sang-shik is acting like a newlywed. Sang-shik is astonished Jin-sook has never ridden in any truck he’s driven. He glances at the stickers adorning the passenger’s side dash.

Eun-hee meets with the meditation center author to help Chan-hyuk get his pay. The media joins her, and they convince the author it’d be advantageous to utilize (and pay for) the promotional materials now. Seo-young even promises they’ll upload the materials that day. Outside, Eun-hee fills Chan-hyuk in on her and Geon-joo’s talk the previous night.

Eun-hee brings up Eun-joo’s accusation that she’s the groveling type, and Chan-hyuk basically agrees but puts it way more diplomatically. She casually mentions her and Eun-joo’s falling out, and Chan-hyuk grabs her in alarm.

She cut off her sister because of that jerk? Chan-hyuk frustratedly says the issue with family is they never say what should be said until it explodes. He tells her to apologize to her sister, which she did. Chan-hyuk claims she’s always been overly sensitive when it comes to Eun-joo, which gives Eun-hee pause.

In the car, Eun-hee contemplates the complicated nature of family and her relationship with Eun-joo. Meanwhile, Sang-shik belts out an old favorite in the truck and happily reminisces, to Jin-sook’s dismay. When he goes out to help another driver, Jin-sook’s eye is drawn to those stickers on the dash.

At the book fair P & F Books is participating in, Eun-hee runs into Geon-joo. He gets a bit flirty which she shuts down when she spots Kyung-ok coming over. Once he leaves, Kyung-ok complains about all the work Geon-joo gave her team. But Kyung-ok shares he thoughtfully set aside lunch for Eun-hee, knowing she had a client meeting during lunch hour.

Chan-hyuk’office gets a surprise visit from Seo-young’s mom who couldn’t reach her daughter. Seo-young is not happy to see her and refuses to go out to talk. Ji-woo nervously suggests they go eat lunch, so the guys start to file out.

In earshot of everyone, her mom asks how she can work in place full of men after what she suffered. What the heck, lady? Her overbearing mother scolds Seo-young for getting angry, and Seo-young yells that she hates her. The guys run out at this point.

Young-oh sighs that mother-daughter relationships are always fraught, but Ji-woo muses it’s not like that in his family. When Chan-hyuk chuckles that someone from an ordinary family wouldn’t know, Ji-woo glumly says he used to think his family was ordinary.

At the work gathering after the book fair, Eun-hee deliberately doesn’t drink. Meanwhile, Chan-hyuk asks Ji-woo to show Eun-hee the photos he has of her. If he were to show her, someone said he’d be misunderstood. Seo-young is in a foul mood and stomps out when Chan-hyuk suggests she grab a drink with Ji-woo while he edits.

Ji-woo is offended by the rejection, but it turns out she’s waiting for him outside. Chan-hyuk grabs his box of memories and pulls out a sealed envelope. Inside are pictures of Eun-joo from her wedding. Oooh.

At the café, Hyo-seok keeps glancing at Eun-joo until she tells him to spill. He uses the excuse that it’s his job to keep an eye on the customers. When Tae-hyung arrives, Eun-joo is startled by the tension and his sarcastic remark about how caring of a barista Hyo-seok is.

As they take a walk, Tae-hyung’s silence after saying he has something to tell her makes Eun-joo nervous. She recalls she used to wonder if she’d ever get to live in a rich neighborhood like theirs and admits she’s felt like she’d be leaving it for a while now.

At the rest stop, Jin-sook is sore from riding around all day and realizes how uncomfortable of a job it is. Meanwhile, Eun-hee arrives at Geon-joo’s, and they go inside. As they’re making out on the bed, they hear the beeping of someone entering the door passcode.

The guys at his job find Sang-shik’s behavior strange and are shocked he’s planning to leave without seeing Young-shik. Of course, he has no idea who that is. A voice calls out, “Father!” and a man comes walking towards him. Eyes wide, Jin-sook sits up in the truck and narrates that she thought something like this would happen one day.

COMMENTS

Come on, Eun-hee! You know better than that. Since she’s been on the other side of this, her behavior is that much more disappointing. Even if they’ve both started to check out of the relationship, unless they’ve officially broken up, it’s cheating. She can’t even blame alcohol this time – just good old poor decision making. If Geon-joo really likes her that much and is over his current relationship, he can break up with his girlfriend first. It’s a big red flag that he hasn’t broken it off yet and never mentioned doing so. Eun-hee knew what she should’ve done, but she let her feelings take control. Although Eun-joo is usually too harsh in her delivery, she’s not wrong that Eun-hee’s wavering, dislike of conflict and emotionality get her in trouble.

Questionable decision making does seem to run in the family, though. Sang-shik, apparently, went one step past cheating and even has a secret kid. One birth secret wasn’t enough, I suppose. Does Sang-shik have another, secret family or is it just Young-shik he’s hiding? It amazes (and disturbs) me that someone can keep such a huge, devastating secret for so many years. Jin-sook wasn’t even surprised which leads me to wonder what made her suspect he was hiding something like this. What a mess. This family has a hell of a lot to work through.

And now we have confirmation that Tae-hyung is hiding something major from Eun-joo. She’s more invested in their marriage than I first assumed but her attempts to communicate are constantly rebuffed. Watching her trying to make things work while he looks like he’s given up is sad. It’s the first time we’ve seen her getting overtly emotional. I think she’s guessed he’s cheating but hasn’t wanted to face it. It’s ironic given her criticism of Eun-hee for doing that very thing years ago. Of course, we haven’t officially heard what Tae-hyung’s secret is, but the clues point to cheating. Although why would Hyo-seok’s girlfriend know anything about Tae-hyung? That was unexpected. But Tae-hyung was right about one thing. Hyo-seok, it’s time to leave when your partner gets stabby with household implements.

At least we’ve got Eun-hee and Chan-hyuk to lighten things. They have such great chemistry, and their interactions are so natural and fun. She needs someone like him who will listen and genuinely cares but also calls her out when necessary. Honestly, I love them as friends and don’t much care if they get together or stay platonic. So long as they don’t part ways again, I’ll be happy. That being said, they do seem to have the healthiest relationship of everyone, and I would like to see one couple that’s happy and unproblematic. It’s looking like Chan-hyuk’s feelings towards the sisters might be a bit more complicated, though. I thought Ji-woo was off on his prediction that Chan-hyuk could’ve liked Eun-joo at one point, but maybe not. Eun-joo could barely remember him when Ji-woo mentioned his name, so they must not have been close. Maybe it was just a crush on the “perfect” sister of his friend. Whatever it is, I’m sure it’ll come to light soon enough, along with every other secret emerging from the shadows.

Thanks for the recaps and comments.

I agree with you that Eun Hee should have known better than to get involved (and fall for, which is worse) with a guy who is engaged. But even so, she's free to do it. For me, even if her decision is quite stupid, the only one who's doing something wrong is him. It's a personal opinion, and I can't understand that people don't agree, but I'm tired of hearing that the single one is as guilty as the one with a couple. No, the problem is with the cheating one and his/her partner. The single one can do whatever and, for me, he/she shouldn't hold on his/her shoulders the burden of responsibility.

Having said this, and as much as I like ChanHyeok, I see his interactions with EunHee in just a friendly way. They are happy to have found again the longtime lost friend, and their trust is just the same as the minute they parted. By the way he looked at the wedding pictures, he seems to still have feelings (what kind, I don't know) for Eun Joo. I think she knows or knew it, but decided to ignore.

Regarding TaeHyeong, I believe also there's some cheating involved, but more to himself than to his wife. I've been thinking from the beginning that HyoSeok is gay because I found odd his relation with EunJoo and it could explain why they are so close, and then when he came to TH's clinic, the idea came to mind: I know who you are.

It was an episode full of mixed feelings, from the laughters when we saw how mum and dad related in the past, to my concern about JiWoo and how such a heavy burden as knowing her big noona is not his dad's daughter is placed on him. Such a happy spirit shouldn't be suffering this much.

Cheating is wrong, yes agreed. Maybe more so than the two. I also relate to the part on one of the comments on the fan wall where you said that in a situation like this women face more of a back lash while the men escape scot free. This part of society infurates me as much as it does you. Therefore all of us can agree that the guy is the asshole here. However, Eun hee is our protagonist here. While the guy is the asshole we are only hurt and dissappointed when soemone who we have expectations with does something wrong. So our disappointment with Eunhee is just that she was established as such a likable heroin that we all were rooting for her but then she does something like this that lowers our(maybe only mine) opinion of her. I don't think she is "free" to do this because even if not as much as outright cheating, it is still moarlly unacceptable. She is 40 and has been on the other side of the situation therefore I can't accept any excuses for this, not even growth, because she should have achieved that by now. I guess you and I differ on this but for me even getting involved with a commited man is wrong.
If there was some other not so important side character in place of Eun Hee, I think most ppl would not have even spared her a thought and just said that the guy was an asshole because eventhough getting involved with an engaged man is wrong, we didn't have any expectations of that character so we don't really spare her any thought.
To reiterate my point one last time I'll say that if my sister/close friend gets involved with a commited man, I'll be disappointed and angry with her, not the man. But if my brother, while already having a partner, gets involved with some other girl, I'll be disappointed and angry with him.

I agree with you about Eun Hee making a terrible decision.
Yet, I can understand what she does. In episode 4 she says “I’ll do what I want” and I relate to her because I’ve been there.
As for the last part of your comment if a friend gets involved with a married man, I wouldn’t be angry, I would just call her stupid, unless that’s exactly what she wants to do: have fun without attachments.
I don’t think that’s Eun Hee’s case. She’s developing feelings for this guy, and she’ll be hurt. You see it, I see it, even she sees it, but still she wants to go that path.
I’m quite surprised that a drama is going that path: a heroine doing everything she shouldn’t.
And yet, she’s 40 and free to make mistakes.
I like this approach as much as I don’t like it...

Soooo EunHee definitely isn't 40.Mom was preggers with the eldest in '82 making EunJoo 38. Mom even said in the first ep,that EunJoo's bio clock is ticking as she's nearing 40. The sisters seem to be close in age so EunHee at-most is in her mid 30s. Not that it influences any of her recent romantic decisions 😅 but just wanted to leave it out there! I think people just started to assume she' is coz CH chided that she's almost 40 in off their convos.

When I said she's 40, it was not meant to be something bad. Whether she's 35 or 40, she's an adult who can live the life she wants and make mistakes and live on.
She has to live her life. And that's what she's doing.

I got the same sense about Hyo-seok too! and was wondering about this, except it was punctured when he said "my girlfriend knows you". Unless he was fibbing, and it's actually him who knows.

I know he says "girlfriend" but I was thinking inside "boyfriend" and considering how conservative is SK society (and dramas!) about homosexuality, I thought he may have said that just in case one of the nurses might be listening...
I may be mistaken, but if feels so odd with him.

Yeah the "girlfriend" reference could be a red herring thrown our way. It also doesn't sit well anyway, if he's spending his day job flirting with Big Noona. Unless, of course, he is also a part of the large cheating circle.

I found it funny how Eun-hui is suspecting something is up and is constantly curiously looking for clues in their banmal chatter. (I forget if it's this episode or the next.)

@eazal
I remember reading that the the most insidious and essential element of colonisation is that it colonises the mind. Nothing is as debilitating as taking on the framing of those who would seek to control you.

Women have for far to long been alone saddled with the morality of society. Much of this mis-allocation of responsibility is not too far removed from labelling women as witches for making men behave in "immoral" ways.

As to EH. As you say she has every right to act (also her personal blowback is her responsibility). It is too early to say but her motivations could be any or multiple options.
- This may be about no strings attached,
- It may be an escape
- It may be she would like to take the high risk option of being the next wife (many have done it before).
- She may just be at that point where she is inflicting delayed self harm (for what ever reason).
- Hey, this is SK Drama it could even yet be revealed as revenge.

The only person in the affair who has a prior commitment is him. Blowback to his family is all on him. She is not his mother, his guardian or his wife. It is not her responsibility to police his behaviour.

That's exactly my point. She can do whatever.
And maybe she just wants to have fun, no need of commitment. Just fun.
Because women also want to have fun. It would be a refreshing point of view.

It is why I find SK Drama's tendency towards the M/W dichotomy for women so instructive. No matter how much it is wrapped up in sweet sayings or even bravado, to me it nearly always arcs back to being used as a mechanism of control.

Every scene with Eun Hee and Chan Hyeok are the best for me! They're funny, they talk about serious stuff, they help each other without judging, they understand and know each other.

For Eun Hee and Geon-joo, she made a choice and for me she will have to assume the consequences : feeling guilty, to be the second one, to live in secret, etc., she won't really have the right to complain. Is it wrong? Yes, but I like the fact to watch it, it's more interesting than perfect characters :p

Poor maknae! Knowing this kind of secret must be so awful! He must be loyal to his mother or his sister?

There are so many mysteries...
- Eung Joo's father
- The mum with the fruit/vegetable guy
- The dad with his son?!?
- Eun Joo's husband's secret
- Seo-young's relationship with her mother

Eunhee and Chanyok are pure magic! Love their talks, Chanyok knows her so well and tells things sensibly... He's totally fine with being her trashcan, and I actually prefer this stage of their relationship to the foreseeable awkward stage, when they start having feelings for each other - Chanhyuk and Eunjoo could make a good pairing instead. The banter between those three will be gold!

This is what I'm speculating too - I wrote my comment before seeing yours, sorry! It would be interesting and different if the Chanhyuk-Eunjoo arc continued, and Eunhui remains the good sister to both, and has her independent character growth, separate from these two.

I don't know. I love the fact that Chan-hyuk and Eun Hee are on the same "level", not a noona romance or a boss-employee romance. They're confortable together.
When Eun Joo didn't show any interest for Chan-hyuk for now, so it would be him chasing her...

Agree with Eunhee having to deal with the consequences of her actions. I like it that she has agency, even if it is to take questionable decisions.
That makes her journey more interesting

Falling for the wrong guy, believing his lies... she will have to collect the pieces of her heart.
Whenever she’s with this guy (which is really charming like most guys in his situation) my brain starts to sing that Fleetwood Mac song: 🎵🎶Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies🎶🎵

He's a hunk with a beautiful library, and he's shamelessly courting her. That's hard to resist! 😋
But I did hope she came to her senses after the clicking door scene, though... She's feeling the push and pull of her conscience against her doormat instincts

I agree - I think the agency part is the *most* interesting bit about Eun-hui's story arc so far. At least she is not being made out to be a wimp of an FL, unable to decide things for herself, or having to rely on others for any reason.

Do y'all also think that part of it is tat she's acting out?? she had recently relieved her first love's betrayal and even admitted her first encounter with the VP dude was all muddled due to her stirred up emotions after running into her ex.she looked more awkward than emotionally overcome when she met BF1,but I do think she has scars from that betrayal. And there are the conversations with her unnie and BFF ,both of whom seem to think she hasn't outgrown her doormat personality (and also didn't apologize to her for their wrongs in the big blowup circa 2016). She may feel that the universe owes her this. She clearly is attracted to the guy and might be thinking what did being the decent one for 9 years net her anyway! May be she for once wants to be the aggressor, wants to feel the confidence and consciencelessness the other girl showed when confronting her 4 years ago.... Except she isn't that person, her face at the end of EP3 clearly shows the guilt and apprehension that's waiting to simmer to the surface. It's gonna be a huge mess but may be it's what she needs to do to grow 🤷

She has a LOT of scars: she basically subsumed her personality and her wants and needs with first bf - and all it got her was humiliation and abandonment, with an added dollop of judgment and belittling from "Big Noona." Add in the bonus prize, her good friend who waited THREE YEARS for his buddy to get around to telling the truth, never letting on to her all the times HE shared with the cheating duo. I really can't let him off the hook for that one, and I was annoyed when he did not follow up her apology with one of his own. So yeah, she has some issues to work through, and if being the one sought after, and the 'other woman' is going to make her feel more empowered and in control of her own life, all we can do is hope this new relationship doesn't just add to her issues.

3

Oh, don't forget this other mystery:
- why and how is Hyo-seok (coffee shop-guy) inserted in Eunjoo's marriage? And who is that stabby girlfriend? @eazal, he does say girlfriend, not friend... I think your gay theory is right, but this detail is confusing

I know he said girlfriend, I know.
But my head keeps saying boyfriend.
And their relation is weird.
I don’t think she’s in love with WDH doppelgänger, but si think they are really comfortable with each other, like friends are. I don’t feel any sexual tension between the two of them.
I mean, I was thinking about this before episode 4...

In Secret Boutique, Kim Tae Hoon played a gay husband, so I hope it's not the same this time... In Secret Boutique, his wife always knew about it, they were friends.

The girlfriend is pretty violent attacking someone with cissors...

I was disappointed in Eun-hee, she should have made sure that they were broken up before jumping in. But, I do think this will be a learning curve for her, though the first time should have suffice for knowing what the pain she will inflict to the girlfriend. Geon-joo's charismatic but damn what a player and a coward. If you're drifting apart, have the nerve to break up, weasel!

This episode did give a hint or not that CH might have a crush on Eun-joo, maybe that's why Eun-hee did not entertain, if she had feelings for CH before, since she saw he had heart eyes for perfect unnie. And feelings of being not a favorite same with dad came flashing.

Dad and his pout counterparts was the funniest part in this episode! And yay for Eun-joo for standing her ground towards that nasty and pervert professor!

Geon-joo is such a weasel! To me it seem like he wants to have his cake and eat it which is just wrong. His entire speech ending with "I've made the decision to continue seeing you" was stupid. I don't understand cheating. If a person is tired of a person of they just want out then they should break up with their partner. It's not that difficult or complicated

I never understood cheating as well.
I understand that love can end, and you can come across someone that puts your life upside down.
When that happens you have to be brave enough to tell the other person: this is over, I don't want to be with you anymore. It's tough, but you have to do it.
And then, there are those "professional cheaters" who only care for themselves and having fun and consider their right to cheat as inviolable. Those people are just trash that should be paired with another trash like them.

I'm kinda digging EH and CH's 'sessions' on the VP. CH was all 'wow that's a line I haven't heard, props to him' when he heard GJ's 'my GF and I are slowly splitting up' spiel. CH's kinda trashing him but is also non judgemental and borderline supportive of his friend making a go at this guy who's clearly bad news. He's dropping truth bombs at her every step of the way but is letting her make her own decisions. I wonder if this kinda 'attached detachment' has been their normal from college days. This might explain why he chose to remain silent when she got cheated on for 3 years and thought it was justifiable. The way I see it,he owed her an apology for that...I can understand feeling awkward bringing cheating news to Ur best friend, esp when the cheater is also friends with you. But being complicit for 3 years is just...coz at that point when she inevitably finds out, your friendship is effectively ruined no matter what. EH seems to have forgiven him for this and I also want to forget about this xo their chemistry is amazing, but I do wish this would get addressed at some point.

Unpopular opinion coming up:

What Eun-hee has (incorrectly) learned from her own personal experience of being cheated on, is that the girl the guy cheats with, is the one who gets married to him. After all, she met her cheating ex at the anniversary of his wedding to the Other Woman. Having that at the back of her mind might have made her more willing to accept his words at face value.

I'm sure that what she's going to learn is that getting involved with a cheating guy is Not A Good Thing plus of course her parents' experience is the polar opposite of this. (Even if my current theory is that Eun-joo's dad could well have been a married guy)

Plus I'm okay with our heroine still being a mess at ep 3/4 😁

"that the girl the guy cheats with, is the one who gets married to him": I don't think she's thinking that much ahead.
What I understood is that after the meditation session, she opened up her emotional floodgates -she apologized to unnie and became friends again with Chanhyuk- and she met this guy right when she stumbled against ex-boyfriend. She is opening up, and that is good, but it makes her vulnerable too, at least until she figures stuff out. Boss is taking advantage of her - he totally went for her when he learned that she was seeing her ex. Not cool, boss!

I can't remember if it's in this episode or not, but he tells her that before coming back to SK he checked out all the staff and found that her selection of books was very similar to his, and also that the books she had been working on were very much his style, so even before they met, he knew they would get along.
I'm not so sure about intentionally going for her just because "she saw her ex", but it may have helped.
From the very moment they were out, he was very aware of her. Too much.

The Sang-shik of younger days was impulsive and kind and very much in love with his wife. It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that he compassionately began to help a pregnant single woman, maybe one who was abandoned by someone he knew. And that he became the only father figure for her child. I just don't see him having a secret child as old as his own children.

I've been thinking the same thing: that Sang-shik chivalrously married the pregnant widow or girlfriend of a deceased buddy (or even brother?) so the baby wouldn't be born a bastard. To me the sirens started blaring at the first kiss. Back in th bar, he says he's not as drunk and stops her from drinking more. She also doesn't look too badly out of it in the kissing scenes that we do see. However this EP, he says he knew she wouldn't remember his apartment no. as she was so out of it and I was like duude..if u knew she was so far gone as to not know where she was, why would you allow urself to get intimate. And then there's the added bonus that she's ur subordinate. The whole situation is super icky

Maybe it's another way of showing that she has low self-esteem, because she always felt a distant second to unni. She let herself be taken for granted by her nine-year cheating boyfriend, and now she's involved with another nine-year cheating boyfriend. And yet she has such a good friendship with Chan-hyuk.

But I am not convinced her relationship with Chan-hyuk is that good: he lied to her for 3 years, she didn't talk to him for nearly 5 after that, now she is using him as just a sounding board, never reciprocating and he takes it as a given... I am wondering if they weren't friends just so a) he could be closer to Eun-Joo and b) Eun-hee could enjoy some male perspective and companionship.

For me, that's the worst thing about their relation.
It's not the cheating, but the fact that he's her boss and it's a very stupid thing. And he will always be in a power position.

So I know I should "have issues" with the morality of things in this story, but funnily enough, I find that I have zero concerns about anything. Nothing is riling me up or making me sad/angry: the cheating, the closeted secrets, the hidden son/grandchildren (?)... It's so deliciously crazy and unreal, I find myself laughing out loud most of the time.

[At the same time, I also wonder about how our general reactions to cheating, etc., are so conditioned by our acceptance of monogamy/monoandry as the social norm, and what storytelling (and our reactions) would have been like if the opposite had become normalized instead.]

All that said, the kid bro is the most sane of the sibs, so far, I think. He looks like he got bullied a lot by his sisters, but he seems to have turned out okay. I wonder what makjang angle Show will hand him. Surely, there's something up its sleeve on that front.

Also I have one major question: Are Eun-hui and Chan-hyuk the OTP?, or will the Show deviate from the norm, and keep Chan-hyuk's crush on Eun-joo alive, and head somewhere else with all this?

I'm glad you also brought up the issue of him being her boss. How messed up is it that he goes after an employee - the one he knows has just met her ex - the same day he arrives?

Keep watching- episode 4 will be worth it (please note how I have been enigmatic and definitely have offered no spoilers here- but I will definitely have more to say after that recap).

This show is much more intense than I expected, but I am genuinely into it.

Thankyou for the recap Quirkycase. I could not agree with you more about Eun-hee and her decision to go with Geon-joo. It is simply stupid- and the really aggravating thing about it is that she actually does know that it is stupid! But she does it anyway. So my question for the writers is simply this- why can't we have a friends to lovers story between her and Chan-hyuk? Watching someone being intentionally stupid is not that much fun.

Both Sang-shik and Jin-sook have had a child with someone other than their spouse- the difference is that until now Sang-shik's son was not known to Jin-sook- although her anger is no doubt partly rooted in her awareness that he had cheated. The other part stems from the fact that she was never really in love with him- she married him to have a father for her unborn child. The talk about possibly differing DNA explaining why Eun-joo is so brilliant (which she is) while her younger siblings are simply very intelligent (none of these kids is a dummy) is probably a foreshadowing of a big reveal yet to come.

We had a wonderful, if brief, vignette of Eun-joo practicing law: She has examined the two professor's patents and has determined that neither one infringes upon the other. And just like that their dispute is over (and in time their friendship restored). She can do this because she is a patent lawyer - which means she is a lawyer with an engineering background. The examination of a patent or a potential patent requires both kinds of knowledge. It is very rare to see a patent lawyer as a character in a drama (no dramatic courtroom scenes- even a patent trial would likely bore you to tears), but please make no mistake about one thing: This lady is brilliant. But, as often happens with such people, her interpersonal skills are somewhat lacking. She states things bluntly because she simply has no patience with people who beat around the bush.

Seeing how the show does not shy away from unpredictable setup in their relationships, I then have to prepare my heart from anti-rooting for anyone, even for the goofy little brother.

There are so many things that would normally tick my skin in this show, especially in episode 3 and 4.

For example: Eun Hee's decision, the CEO not clean cutting his previous relationship, the lack of chemistry between Chan Hyuk and Eun Joo (if they're going to paired up in the end anyway), to Eun Hee easy chemistry with both Chan Hyuk and CEO and how I wouldn't mind if she ended up either with one of them or staying single/ended up with anyone else completely stranger, and of course, the overall cheating action that looks like it apply to almost all the characters.

But the way the show is presented makes me forget of inserting my own values and expectation into the characters, especially the ones that I tend to gravitate more. That's why, instead of rooting for any of them, I feel like I'm just observing all their miniscule to grand behaviors, and it does feel like a journey of character studies. This is my first time, so I hope I succeeded and don't get fairly disappointed when my subconsciousness that secretly root for particular characters face the unexpected outcomes.

One thing I also found throughout my journey in real life is that human tend to repeat the same action/mistakes. In this drama context, if the predecessor in the family, in this case, the parents, have a history of cheating, there's a chance that action would be repeated by the children or grandchildren etc. On a separate note, if a person is cheated, then sometimes, he/she would do the very same thing as well. Not saying it's the norm or you could just call it a coincidence, it's just that after I've met/read cases like this in real life.
So the characters behavior kind of make sense to me in a way.
