Still not reached 3115k - and 10 days left for 19th of April

Well, i didn't stepped out of house for whole march and this time around i guess should go and look around. Empty streets do look beautiful.

Hectic week - I burn more energy than i consume. This time gonna taste Peanut Butter - yup that small talk of 2020.

Tried Camel Milk - what taste

Wanna try lima milk as well as Oat Milk.

Coconut water+ milk still taste the best. Better eat coconut. Coconut cake.

Would like to try lama milk too.

Hi Wapz! Come check in here more often - occasional socmed helps with anxiety, at least for me, I have figured :) Watch a feel-good drama to distract yourself (I recommend the cdrama You Are My Hero, or one of the new tw-dramas - Magic Hour, Arc of Life (despite the pointless plot)). Stay well!!

The feel-good drama You are My Hero is my distraction these days. Thanks for the recommendation. The main couple is very cute but I don't think there's anything else that interests me in the show. That's a very atypical Chinese rom com issue but it's still nice especially when there's no antagonist. It's ending soon so I will have to check another C or T drama because K dramaland is super dry and sad.

Oh good to know you're watching already!
Absolutely right! It's a delightful OTP. No noble idiocy. No angst. No triangle, at least for the OTP. And they're funny too! I also liked the ensemble generally, and though the action scenes were pretty well done for a drama. If I could erase eps 30-34 from the show, I'd call it a pretty good drama overall.

Yeah 30 to 34 was unnecessary. Maybe they just wanted to meet the 40 episode mark lol. I just saw Avenue X's review of the show and totally agree that the acting is super natural and relaxed. They do seem like real people and I love Ma Sichun's voice, it's so calm. But I guess I like their chemistry and the unexpected humor the best.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sandra. She's right up there among my top cdrama actresses. I picked up this show for her, and discovered Bai Jingting only incidentally. She has still remained the focus of my attention, though. She's got terrific screen presence, and gets under the skin of every character she plays. I have watched her in three dramas, all three so different, and yet, you know it's Sandra. (sorry I just wanted to rave about her for a bit).

Warner Brothers Studios announced this week that it will not go back to the traditional theaters first release model until some time in 2022. It will continue to release on the same day its films in limited theaters and on its streaming platforms. This means that theater chains will have two full years of massive business losses. Also, it does not mean that studios will change their minds to give up PPV new releases on their streaming platforms.

It does mean that WB and other studios will be holding back their big action, franchise movie releases for another year. By pushing back 2020 and 2021 releases to 2022 and 2023, it means that there will be a back log of film inventories . . . which means less and less new projects getting green lit and filmed in the next two years. That will have a significant ripple effect throughout the industry, including on actors and production crews. Investors will be wary of paying for a film project in 2021 with just a mere hope it can be shown in theaters in 2023.

This makes me sad for theatre owners. I'd rather go to the movie theatre and support them besides I prefer the big screen experience.

I just checked the latest numbers for the US. As of today 560,000 officially counted COVID-19 deaths. The daily death rate had been dropping steadily but two days ago it unexpectedly spiked to over 2,500. 1/3rd of the population with a vaccination shot means 2/3rds without so we need to keep doing what we're doing.

happy friday beanies!
life has been pretty eventful the past two weeks-- heard back from all the colleges i applied to with some good news, and now i'm just trying to make decisions. at the same time, school and the world is getting more stressful, but the things that are getting me through everything are the good friends I've made this year and dramas!!

i think navillera has officially brought me out of my drama slump-- i will most likely be caught up today. i was binging AOY pretty well until the show brought up a kidnapping plot, which i did not expect in such a sweet show. i finished MA two weeks ago and am so happy with it.

these slice of life dramas are definitely my favorite ones because of the warmth and comfort they give me, but i don't just find comfort in happy scenes. i keep thinking about han yeri's plotline in AOY-- her performance is so amazing and makes me want to cry with her. slice of life dramas make me feel like i am part of the screen and the character's lives. all the news in the past month has been getting to me to the point where i just stopped checking most of my social media. diving into dramas is what kept me sane last year too.

i advise everyone to take breaks from the news every now and then and check in with yourself mentally-- social media is good to stay connected with people and it's important to know what's happening in the news, but for me personally, it gets super draining seeing my Instagram feed or stories full of just terrible things. and as always, i hope you guys have a good weekend and may it be peaceful-- and enjoy spring ◡̈

Good morning!
Navillera – what a lovely paced story that is so engaging! I almost cried when Chae-Rok opened the fridge and found homemade dishes with notes from Deok-Chul. I’ve finished ep 3 so far.

Hello, Me! is fun – but I’m scared for what will happen when the two Ha Nis must part ways.

Oh Master – I love Lee Min-Ki (déjà vu with the truck of doom, SUFFB all over again except he is still in ep 2 this time around), And Na Na! It’s like watching them be themselves and not acting. Really, I have a crush/crush watching them, 50-50 split down the middle. The writers could have thrown in Il Woo as The Scheduler, though, wouldn’t that have been genius?

So, I’m pretty happy in kdramaland this week with fresh shows that I’m liking.

After the “failure” episode with Rain and his boy group on Master in the House, I’ve been afraid to watch the failure themed episodes after that. I hated the set up and the stress of it all. I deem the theme a failure.

I’ve been doing some painting and sketching. It’s too cold to think about spring planting yet – canyon winds are the worst – I am always tricked into looking at plants, only to remember that every single year without fail I can’t plant until the last week in May because the temps drop low at night. Have a great weekend and stay safe beanies!

I so agree with your comment on the failure episode of Master in the House with Rain. I skipped the next two episodes (same theme) after that after watching about 10 minutes of them. And the latest one just wasn't interesting enough for me either (I did watch about half an of it before I gave up).

I have been watching each and every episode of Master in the House since it first aired and I only started skipping after the Rain episode. Maybe it's because they have a new PD (announcement back in Feb)? The newer episodes don't hold my interest in the same way as before.

Required fields are marked *

I didn’t realize there was a PD change as well. I was just shocked and disappointed Rain agreed to the setup. I also tuned in for a few minutes on the n cut ep but was not interested in the theme continuation or the guests and their stories. Haven’t watched this week yet either, but I’m soured on the direction. Wasn’t the episode about the man who went to SK in the 70s from the US for a visit who then became a lawyer and returned to SK and has lived there ever since interesting? And the musicals, wow, incredible opportunities for the members to try many new things and meet all sorts in interesting people! I hope the rhythm the show created can return.

I just watched the clip of the prank and it was tasteless. As someone who has cried when someone else was getting scolded at work, I can't imagine the pain the other boy group members were feeling. Also their purpose was to make the shooting a failed one and let the MiTH members feel that their shoot went to waste but I don't think it impacted anyone in this way. They were much more concerned about the boys than the shoot and no matter how messy the shoot is at the back of their mind, they rely on the PD and editor to make it to the screen. So yeah it was in bad taste and I felt terrible for the boy group members who had no idea what's going on, even close to their debut. Though I gained some appreciation for the members especially for Eun Woo.

I don't know what it is about me, that every celebrity I really like ends up being involved in some type of controversy...the fact is that these issues either are not their fault or should not even be considered a problem in the first place! :(
Entertainment should be fun, but I end up even more stressed instead (as if real life wasn't enough)!
This has been bothering me for quite some time, it seems like I can't escape it :/

These days I'm trying to read more, instead..almost 0 risk of getting too attached to people that might get on the bad side of knetz (or cnetz, or any other netizen..) one day or the other ><

We have discussed this topic often in this forum. How celebrities behave is part cultural and part individual principles. In K-entertainment, many celebrities and idols are recruited at very young ages. The sudden rise in popularity is something difficult to handle. They may not know how to behave. Or they have been pampered and put on a pedestal before fame so they believe they are above others. They are packaged and marketed as a product and not a person. Put a public microscope on their professional and personal lives, k-celebrities walk daily on egg shells. In an increasing cancel culture world, one rumor can negatively impact a show; one scandal can end a career. And what is a scandal is very weird. Dating is a scandal because agency, producers and advertisers want stars to be attractive, single, attainable and a marketable fantasy to fans. Stars are constrained by their careers so they cannot have a “normal” life outside work.

This week’s second CLOY dating story (which was denied), shows how adverse public reaction, scrutiny and fan reaction can be in a dating scandal. In the past 10 years, Dispatch has reported on 40 celebrity couples. Three couples denied the story (7.5%). Eight couples (mostly recent ones) are still dating (20%). Five couples got married (12.5%) but one got divorced. Twenty-four couples broke up (60%). Of the break-ups, 62.5% broke up within months of the public announcement. 79% broke up within 1 year, and 91 % within 2 years. These percentages are well above the average relationship failure rates because of the public pressure on the couple and the constant invasion of privacy.

Btw, dating scandal is one thing, your own agency using that plus your past health issues against you because of a contract dispute is a whole other story 😩

Unfortunately we live in a world where women are hated :(( Ugh. I'm legit scared that incels even exist.

Also side note, in Korea, there's a huge news about some deranged psycho who (TW* blood) murdered three women, b/c he was obsessed w/ one of them, and that led to a chain reaction.

Given Korea's law system involving sexual crimes/cases, I seriously am worried that the psycho won't get his due. Sorry for the mini rant, but its eery how some light teasing (bullying of course is way diff) is being conflated with serious crimes. I mean look at the actors or PDs who've been charged and then deemed 'innocent' despite the heavy evidence there.

But yeah, those minor ones that cause a disproportionate amount of anger are something I've seen way too many times since I've been into K-ent ><

Honestly, don't Stan anyone. What we see of their personas is a small segment of what we want to hear, or what they want present to us as. Of course, we're all human at the end of the day. But I feel like in Korea for celebs there, there's more of a veil and secrets to it. I heard some awful stuff regarding some celebs, but b/c of the defamation laws there, not many can talk about the problem makers. So it just make it cautious, I see it from a surface level of (Cast/crew/fan interactions), and take that w/ a grain of salt. And enjoy their work, but try not to get too involved outside of that. I feel for the actors and how much weight they feel towards their fans :(

I remember Lee Joon Hyuk got flack from his online fan site from someone who got blasted him online for his 'lack' of talk w/ his fans, and criticized him. To the point where the admin wrote an essay about his behavior, it was just as cringe and awkward as one can imagine, and made me realize how much ownership people have of their favs. Boundaries people. This only makes the actor more scared/creeped out. We don't own them, and they shouldn't feel pressured to do either.

Required fields are marked *

Oh yeah, I've been trying for the past year or so to stop myself from caring too much, but kinda failed recently lol! XD
Though in my case it's not really about what these celebs have done/said, just the reactions of netizens (for example) that I find unfair and sometimes utterly cruel ><

Also, it was more a "why always me/my favs??" kind of thing ahaha! 😅

Ahh, that's life ~

No worries! I think we all are learning in some ways. Its hard sometimes, when there's a particular talent that your enamored with.

I see! Netizens are viscous sometimes, I think bullying isn't ok. I recall a singer said even though he tries to not go online, his family or friends would call him, and inform him. So even if they want to escape the brutal critiques laid at them, unless you live under a rock, its next to impossible not being affected by them.

Recently, the shipper culture has gone insane. If their OTP ship comes in, they believe they made it happen; that they are their best friends; that they want to have front row seats at the imaginary wedding. The rampant speculation, the internet stalking, gossip and photoshopping photos for clickbait is a real toxic culture. No wonder the vast majority celebrity couples cannot handle the pressure to publicly date.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Your previous comment about the statistics involving celeb relationships was daunting. I notice a lot of Korean actors are un-married/private about their dating life. And sometimes I wonder if its the privacy aspect, or they're afraid they'll lose their fame/options if they confirm they're dating someone. How sad is that, if they want to date or found someone, but b/c of the fame/idol worship of them, they choose career over happiness :((

Kim Nam Gil also lamented that even tho he wants to date, his gf will have to understand what comes w/ dating a public figure who has fans attached to them. And the hardships involved with that :((

On the opposite side, Hollywood couples break up, get back together, date, divorce, and etc lol. Such a different world of culture, yet I feel like sometimes the Korean shipping culture (Those Best Couple awards don't help!!), only fuel the fire for people to take advantage of them. Its important for the actors to have boundaries, so stalkers/etc don't put them in a vulnerable position.

I feel like the Korean fan culture tends to veer towards toxicity. The defamation laws in SK were put in place after this one very famous actress committed suicide because of the rumours being circulated online.

I think in Asia, fan ownership and culture is next level. It is not just about opening up an Instagram account anymore, but keeping up to date on the fan club, and other fan related stuff. I sometimes feel bad for the talents, of course, they signed up for this etc, but I think there's a difference between liking a talent vs. feeling like you've ownership over them.

The defamation laws have its pros/cons. Some creepy people can get away despite it being true, b/c the people who are saying the truth don't have the $$/power. Ex. Joo Min-mo lawsuit w/ his phone hacking, and Jang Dong-gun's involvement (His sleazy texts with Joo Min-mo) was erased completely b/c of his fame/status. Sometimes, I sorta wish we could lift the veil of secrecy and expose the creepers working in the industry instead of having it fester to the top when it gets super serious.

It's so rare to see any beanies from the early days of DB 😔. I've learned a lot about Korea, K-dramas and films from them, especially the talented WITH S2 sub squad. JB, MrX (our history guru), thunderbolt (Thundie's Prattle), Dahee_Fanel (Dahee's Plastic Castle) etc etc etc.
I really miss them especially when they did end of year reviews here at DB or at Thundie's Prattle. The quality of their subtitles and recaps were just amazing.

I'm glad that soompi and Koala's playground are still around even when things have changed.

That’s my observation too. It seems that the earlier commentators (or Kdrama mentors) are no longer around although I still keep those Bookmarks. Apart from Thundie who may no longer be with us, just wonder if others are still drama watching.

Even for Beanies, there have been several generations with core commentators turnover like every 2-3 years. Is this a reflection of different life journey or priorities - or a case of I don’t have a life LOL?!

I hope people in my country and I will get the vaccines soon. It doesn’t look very likely that this will happen soon, but I hope it’s coming. And please can we get the brands other than AstraZeneca? I heard that it has worse side effects and can’t protect you from the African variant. You can correct me if I’m wrong.

Apart from those things, I’m glad we got a bit of rain this week. The weather has been so hot, and the sweat makes me feel uncomfortable.

Hello Beanies! Happy Friday!

The second dose of the Covid vaccine has kind of kicked me in the head, so I’m using the day to relax, and maybe watch some k-drama in a slightly delirious fog.

As I’ve watched more dramas, I’ve noticed that Korean has so so many words in common with Tamil (my first language), and this is fascinating because there doesn’t seem to be any historical connection between the languages. There are also a bunch of usage forms and conventions similar to both languages that are really interesting too. Apparently, there are researchers in both countries trying to find an ancient link? Just goes to show that the more different we seem in the world, the more we’re sort of the same?

Anyway, happy weekend, all!

Good evening to you all, beanies.

I'm super-psyched for upcoming drama DOOM AT YOUR SERVICE, which I hope will bring me out of this small drama slump I'm wallowing in. Without meaning to, I've seemed to have dropped VINCENZO and I fully hope to be picking that up again. It's the insanely long episodes.

On the other hand, I've started a breakfast re-watch of W, in hopes it will make slightly more sense the second time around. Or maybe the delayed watch will force some other response in me than utter disappointment with the initially brilliant writer.

Outside of dramaland, I'm terribly tired of this whole discussion about Astra Zeneca's vaccine. Maybe it's because I work around very potent drugs with far more potent side effects, but I prefer getting my second dose of AZ before being subjected to several sources of vaccine. I wish people would just be given the choice.

I will have to take on 8,5 hour shifts from next month onwards, so I did the 8,5 hour shift today to get used to it, which is pure torture for an introvert like me. Right now I am even too tired to write my usual OT essay!

I would like to leave a great impression though, so I’ll just mention that the rulebook says that we are required to hang up on people who refuse to speak the official district language with us while calling. Some rude jerk demanded I passed him a colleague who spoke his language when I refused to comply. How bold of him to assume that I am surrounded by colleagues jumping at the chance to cater to his language whims, simply because he is too lazy to learn the language of the district where he lives. I literally was citing the law in order to explain why nobody would do that and why he had to cooperate when our charming caller dared to interrupt me to announce in a colorful language that he did not care. “Well then neither do I” I thought to myself, politely excused myself and pressed that red button.😎

Nice when following the rules allows you to be a badass!😁

I'm not sure where you live, but I can't even fathom a rule like that. In my neighborhood alone I can hear people speaking four different languages through my window, and most local agencies make some effort to outreach to those who can't speak the dominant language here. While, the caller shouldn't have used "colorful" language when speaking to you, not learning or not being able to learn an official district language shouldn't automatically be assumed to the result of laziness. Language learning is hard.

I concur. Wherever I worked it was exactly the opposite: you'd better do your utmost to understand that person even if their accent was so thick that nobody could really understand or if they spoke a different language do the impossible to find someone who speaks that language, even if it was a second language or something. The above example sounds like the worst possible customer service I have ever encountered and - quite possibly - the customer was rude and undeserving, but that's not badass attitude, it just sounds like blatant discrimination. In this day and age to refuse service based on language bias - this is what the recent horrors that the Asian American community are facing stems from. From small things like this. And there I was hoping that Turtually would proudly say that he bent the rules just to offer a helping hand, and there he was, telling us how proud he was to refuse to help someone. I have eaten the sour bread of contact centre, but when I could take it no more I went above and beyond to fine a new job leave that one and I refused to take similar roles when they were offered. I know that it's not the same now, when many people lose their jobs because of the pandemic, but the person at the other end of the call is not guilty that you hate your work. (My rant makes me think I am similar to a knet, but really TS's comment triggered me in a very, very bad way and all those memories flooded me unexpectedly).

So, it has come to my attention that your post comes from a different context than mine in terms of language issues, and I want to apologize. I made an assumption about your situation and actions and it was a wrong one, and then I responded in a way that wasn't kind.

My comment was very insensitive considering the current situation worldwide, so you were right to call me out on that. I promise I will do better from now on!

@ Egads @me I would like to apologize for upsetting you with my OT post. Clearly it was not wise to write this in a tired state with the current state of affairs worldwide.😢

I would also like to tell you more about my background to put things into perspective. Someone defended me and was kind enough to let me copy their reasoning:

“I know this sounds weird in a usa context but in some countries with a complex language history the reaction is normal. it generally doesnt apply to those with an immigrant background.
its not about diversity its about national language regulation in a non usa context- about nationals from one district moving to another but refusing to learn the language and expecting to be catered to in their own, not because theyre not given the resources but because of a feeling of superiority. this runs deep and while i dont feel the same level of disgust towards this turtie does i have to defend her in this. like i said, it doesnt apply to immigrants or refugees with an accent or who are trying. it applies to those who have lived here their entire lives for generations and have the national accent dialect language whatever from the other region.(edited)”

I have a master’s degree in translation, so the more languages the merrier for me personally….except that I am representing one specific district of the government that speaks one official language only. Switching to another language is also dangerous because we deal with matters that are difficult enough to explain in our native/ the district language. The risk of making big mistakes would only increase if I used another language and I can get myself and the government in serious trouble for that.

I am going to stop here, because I am aware I tend to word things in an awful way sometimes when I do not mean to. I will reflect on what I write in the future, and I sincerely apologize again to anyone who was hurt by my comment.

Turtie

I understand better your situation now and I equally want to apologise for my harsh words. Everybody has different circumstances, and in today's world nobody is careful enough with their words.

I certainly learnt the hard way that I should be more careful with my words from now on! I am disappointed in myself for making you relive bad memories with my comment and I would like to apologize for making you go through that again. Thank you for calling me out on this, I learnt a painful but very valuable lesson!

If I were a hugger, I would say this is a time for a group hug. But I'm not hugger, so we should all nod to each other (socially distanced of course) and be glad that DB is a place where we can have these discussions and all learn from each other and that it doesn't have to become a shouting match.

Hi beans. I hope everyone is happy, healthy and had a great week :)

Lots of Sungrok updates this week. More Dracula 🧛🏻‍♂️ updates and his baseball ⚾️ ad has been released. Yay!!! 🥳

Baeksang nominations is next week. I'm wishing Kairos will be nominated too. It's a great drama and deserves all the praise it got and still gets.

On the other hand...dramaland without a Sungrok drama feels incomplete. Waiting patiently for his next drama announcement and please don't leave dramaland yet 🥲

Kairos was one of the best this year and actually made sense form start to finish, which seems to be quite a feat nowadays. All the case did a good job, but I agree a certain someone deserves extra credit. *wink, wink*.

romantic dramas and temporary breakups? Almost in every drama the main couple spend some time apart from each other...and sometimes it doesn't seem necessarily and just seems to be a filler, tradition, or an excuse...I am not happy.
