On July 8, tvN told news outlet Star News, “Park Hae Eun, who was cast in tvN’s new high profile Hong Sisters drama ‘Hwan Hon,’ left the drama after discussion with the production crew. "The actress even finished the script reading for the drama, but she unfortunately decided to leave the cast." Other reports said it was because of her “bad acting.” It is very rare for an actor to bounced from a project after it has started filming because of their acting talent. tvN explained, “Despite the fact that she is a rookie actress, we worked hard together, but she felt a lot of pressure to play the lead character of a big project. Therefore, after a lot of discussion with the actress and with respect to a mutual exchange of opinions, it was decided that she would step down from the role.” It was reported that Jung So Min (32) has been offered the role.

In an interview about a decade ago, the Hong Sisters said they like to find relatively unknown actors to play their leads because it makes their characters more believable. In reality, it was part of their “brand” to be “star makers” from their dramas. Also, in the past, it was probably cheaper to hire non-stars to put more money into production values and location shoots.

The most accomplished Korean actresses are in their late 30s and early 40s. Networks and producers are still desperately trying to find “break-out actresses” in their 20s to star in major productions. The current “hot” choice has been Han So-Hee, 26, who has received countless public offers for dramas and film projects. Her current drama, Nevertheless, is controversial and her critics find her acting not “nuanced” but limited.

But there are many other more accomplished actresses in their 20s such as Lee Joo Young (29) and Bae Suzy (26). Top lists may be subjective but often list Kim Sae-ron (20), Kim So-hyun (21), Kim Yoo-jung (21), and Jo Bo-ah (29) as being the best in their age group.

I have been waiting for more information on the Hong Sister's upcoming RETURN/HWAN HON.
In this article the project is describes as:
blockquote>
a fantasy historical romance drama about the growth and love of young sorcerers who read the universe and its energy. “It will be set about 1,000 years ago and take place in the north side of the Korean peninsula,” they added.

Complete article here:

I have this project on my list of upcoming sageuks. Maybe a bit of a stretch. I am looking forward to seeing Lee Jae-wook in RETURN. The ending of DODO has been forgotten. LJW recently gave a great performance (as a boxer) in MOVE TO HEAVEN.

NGL, the scenes of Park Hye-eun's acting in the drama that she herself posted were awkward. This just sucks because I was so looking forward to Lee Jae-wook finally being paired up with someone his age (1997), and now again I have to watch him with someone almost a decade older (1989).

Excluding the child actresses, if they're trying to make Song Kang happen, I wish they'd push Shin Ye-eun (1998), Go Yoon-jung (1996), and Choi Sung-eun (1996) who have the age, visuals, and acting skills.

perhaps the story calls for them to be different ages. If it's what the story demands, then...

Did the story change from the time they casted Park Hye-eun to the start of filming?

Yes, the age gap may be a little tricky to pull off.

Not knowing anything about the character, I would like to see Jeong Ji So (1999) try for the role. She was the rich family's daughter in Parasite. I've seen her in serious roles only (The Cursed drama plus Parasite) but it would be nice to see if she has both comedic and dramatic acting chops (which you'll need in a Hong Sisters drama). Looks like she was in Doom At Your Service but I haven't watched that drama yet so I don't know how she did.

Another one I like is Park Si Eun, who played the young Park Min Young in Queen for 7 Days. She is a little young though, born in 2001, so she would be 19 this year.

Park Si Eun is in the group STAYC now. I was wondering if she was still acting or if she had taken a break from it to focus on her idol career. Her current filmography ends around the time she debuted.

Imitation is my crack at the moment. The show is pure idol fluff, but Jung Ji-so does both comedic and dramatic acting in it. I liked her in Doom at Your Service, and she's 163 cm but looked close to Park Bo-young's height, which makes her look younger than her age. Her male leads in Imitation tower over her.

Go Min-si (1995) is another 20s actress who deserves to break out, and she's 165 cm but also looked short next to Lee Do-hyun in Youth of May.

Basing an actor's abilities on a .2 second gif is probably the complete antithesis of being objective. (By that same token, viewers should be able to judge if a drama is good by just watching the first 30 seconds of episode 1 *slaps forehead*)

If JSM accepts this role - and this is still a big if - she would be leading a pack of green actors whose filmography lists are about a fourth of hers (aside from the wonderful veteran Oh Na Ra). Unless the script is hitting it off the charts, I would say JSM's time it better spent in another drama and away from this pre-production mess.

Everyone's so hung up on the age factor and seemed to have forgotten that Korean productions have shoved other much worse pairings down our throats (PSH-CSW in 'Sisyphus' & LBH-KTR in 'Mr. Sunshine'). Luckily JSM still looks incredibly young & LJW leans on the more mature vibes so visually speaking it balances out. But visuals aside, I care more about how well each of their characters will be written & what kind of plot the Hong sisters will whip up - that is far more critical than discussing age discrepancies....

That's a fair observation. Story and character considerations should always be the main drivers of casting choices. Age discrepancies shouldn't be the main factor but unfortunately, I know it affects my viewing pleasure occasionally (likely has more to do with chemistry between the couple than anything else). I don't generally have an issue with age discrepancies, just power differentials between couples (I think I made a comment on that last week in the Friday open thread as well).

That being said, I don't see anything wrong with suggesting some names here of actresses nearer Lee Jae Wook's age (I think most of us assume it will be a romantic pairing) - it's like fantasy casting. Not a big deal.

School Nurse Files was pretty much an 'indie film' instead of a K-drama. Park Hae Eun did an excellent job of capturing the quirky indie film aesthetic. Histrionic scenery-chewing Hong sisters acting is another skillset entirely.

so vancouver patron is still need to say - I'm Alive.

As for skirts - I had no intention and have no interest playing for this or that gender. That work suits facemasks the best and they can keep doing it.

Lungi, dhoti - from indian subcontinent
kilt - from irish

The thing is in hot climates it was and still is pretty easy to see males wearing some sort of skirt. In asia its all visible in its glory. In africa you can see it. I don't think there is any in middle-east and for island-nations and territories there are traditional clothes. It looks odd only in the mindset western audience. And for them it needs to be made the new normal.

Skirt is such nice dress for summers and so are sundresses. The only problem is when wind blows for a second and that is all too casual for hot air.

A lot of dramas, too little time. Even the only one I'm watching Penthouse s3, I'm already behind hahaha

the only thing I've finished I think is web dramas, cause its just ten minutes

So...this week TVLine, a popular mainstream US entertainment website, recapped episode one of "You Are My Spring," the new Netflix KDrama. As far as I know, this is the first time they have recapped a KDrama.

I saw that! I think you're right! I wasn't planning to watch this show as it's airing. I typically only watch them only after they're all done, unless something about it peaks my interest, like an actor/ actress/ writer/ director, but maybe I will now so I can read along the recap. I just glanced at it as I didn't want to get spoiled. It will be interesting to see how they deal with Korean cultural nuances.

Whenever I comment on Mainstream US entertainment sites I mention that Netflix has more than just repeats of old movies to watch. The opposition to Korean fare has reduced sharply in the last year. Someone suggest that was because lockdown folks had 'completed Netflix', finally checked out K-drama content and liked what they saw.

Yeah, esp as more companies take interest in Korean content, the walls will slowly break down. Personally, I like reading Mainstream US sites reviews. The good ones do really good breakdowns of the shows in length per episode. Also, I feel b/c its from an outsider pov, they go in fresh/b/c they don't know the stars personas. If Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, or AV Club starts reviewing K-dramas, then I'll know K-dramas have fully become more recognized/acknowledged in the West.

Hello, All:
Hope all is well.
Current dramas:

Devil Judge: I have never "gotten" Ji Sung or his acting. But i'm liking this drama. Of course, i feel utterly morally conflicted about how loose I'm willing to play with the rules just to put a bad guy in prison. I'm actually annoyed with our hero's would-be girlfriend detective for continuing to be so rule-bound and snoopy. Of course, we need someone who is totally legalistic and by the book but... doesn't mean i have to be on her side. I'm hoping there is a true vengeance thing in devil judge's past and not just his own personal whims to mess with evil folks and desire to be loved because of his loveless friendless childhood. We shall see. The dystopian world is pretty minimally-depicted but is there more? Am loving the chairman. Loved him in Tomorrow with You and in Taxi. He is one of my favorite character actors. His speech about not getting roles when he was an actor seemed very meta. I do love the writing.

You are My Spring: Well, that second episode through me for a loop. Am liking this drama. This actor is one of my faves, although he is definitely king of lowkey acting. He does do his intrusive analyses well, though. We see it's just a weird quirk he has and he doesn't seem to be arrogant or pushy about it. I'm just hoping there is no over-arching governmental conspiracy. Give me a solid murder.

On the Verge of Insanity: Another gem. And another low-key actor. Not sure who is the main lead or if the girl will be gotten by anyone. The Ex is weak and unethical with nary a redemption arc in sight. But hero-would-be-coder-now HR manager has fewer scenes than sleazy ex. Will see.

Be My Dream Family: Somewhat boring meh slice of life without much page-turning vibe. And yet, weirdly addictive to me. I wish there were an entire drama about the trials of Min Hee as an actress.

Cdramas:
The Rebel: Oh so good. A great spy drama. I highly recommend it.

Have a great weekend, all.

I watched the first two episodes of 'On The Verge of Insanity' and, man, that was a brutal watch. Why bother to do series about serial killers from other dimensions when you can instead do a series about corporate HR showing up at a regional office to lay off half the staff? After surviving the first episode the second was a *little* less nerve wracking.

I've fallen in love with this show probably because I'm now middle-aged and one of the things I fear the most isn't if I get robbed or killed, it's the daily anxiety of whether or not HR will send me a random email one day saying they need to see me for a complaint and then proceed to fire me. Talk about anxiety.

I've never seen a Korean (or American) show that focuses solely on the HR department so this is an interesting watch and I'm loving the understated performance by Jung Jae-young. Not to mention how much I admire his character for being in his 50's, single parent, and still willing to work and improve on himself by taking night classes for career development. (Makes me feel guilty for watching Netflix every night after work....)

I like seeing a more realistic/flashy show with actually talented veterans. I also LOVE that the actors/look of the show is low-key/less flashy, none of them look glamorous, and its dope! Jung Jae-young is a great actor, esp. his films! I like the single parent aspect too, esp. b/c in Korea there's a lot of them but they've this stigma.

Exactly! I remember there was one scene where Lee Sang-yeop comments (in a very petty way) on Jung Jae-young’s attire like “Why do you always wear plaid? Do you have nothing else to wear?” which I found hilarious b/c I also have a friend who wears plaid every friggin’ day so I was like “Yes! Props to the Styling Department on this show for accuracy!” Same goes for the Casting director too for using actors who look like everyday people you’d bump into the streets. This really helps viewers think of themselves as one of them and root for the developers and researchers more, imo.
I’m also loving Jung Jae-young’s delivery of dry, sardonic humor and hope to see more of that in future episodes.

Right, I feel like casting people/folks who are less glamorous really helps in my suspension of the show I'm watching. If they cast models/really attractive folks, esp. in this type of show/genre, it would've taken me out ngl. Also, more dry/sardonic humor in K-dramas! I would love to see a K-drama w/ The Office type humor lol.

'Nevertheless'. I just caught episode 3. Are we sure Na-bi isn't really the bad guy in this drama? She's always in her own head, rationalizing, theorizing, making assumption. Then she blindsides Jae-un with unexplained changes in attitude. Which of the two decided to keep the relationship on the downlow? If you come to the series believing Jae-un is being sincere Na-bi comes across as a withholding manipulator whose ashamed to be with him.

Or, she’s a girl who was controlled and manipulated in a past toxic relationship and that has colored her judgement. The boy has the reputation prior of being a playboy, not serious, doesn’t date, just kisses and everyone tells. Her reputation precedes her as well, being innocent in a relationship with an older man who used her for his own professional gain. So there are some women (and men) who are terrible judges of character, and fall into the same dysfunctional relationships over and over. I kind of think that’s what the story is getting at. How it happens.
