As said in 2020 - I like food right off the stove - but to have some fun, haven't eaten any warm meal since May 2019. Its 2021 and time to bring some change so buying an cooking electronic gadget - lot of features and for many purposes.

I was planning to keep it till December 2021 but now decided September is right month to have stop the stupidity with new plans. Haven't stepped out of home for 120 days so that need to do too. WFH does work but still you should do little outing outside once in a week atleast.

Covid never left but now a third or fourth wave is putting back old lockdown restrictions. Korean entertainment news this week was filled with Covid shut-downs of productions.

In the US, it was reported that more than half of the movie theaters will permanently close. Big studios like Disney have found they can release a blockbuster moving simultaneously in theaters and on its streaming service. Black Widow reportedly had the best post-pandemic opening weekend box office at $140 million because of this new business model.

Steaming is no longer the future, it is the present. When BTS can gross more than $74 million for two on-line concerts, there is no reason why bands have to hit the road to do live shows. The change to digital entertainment consumption is accelerating faster than we realize.

Seeing on a screen is one thing but I do miss the communal experience of actually going to stuff (I can go to things here at the moment because I’m in New Zealand but mostly don’t because of family logistics). The move to streaming really hammers in the digital divide - where you might have been able to scrape up a ticket price, now you have to scrape up a device, and internet connection and a ticket price….so while there are advantages there’s plenty of downsides too.

I'm in Cook County Chicago Metro region more than 30 miles from Lake Michigan shoreline. Every time there is a lake gale wind or lake shore flood advisory, the entire county is included. Not even lake-adjacent municipalities are actually much affected. We do sometimes get the welcome lake wind cooling in summer as well as unwelcome lake effect snow in winter/spring.

I read an amazing article in the NYT last week about Chicago and the history of its water, of which I had little idea even though I grew up there near the Sanitary and Ship Canal 😮

I'm a suburbanite so I might be more ignorant about Chicago history.

My high school (Western) humanities class did spend a good amount of time, relatively speaking, on Chicago architecture as well as Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings.

I'm on vacation for the 3 next weeks \o/

I'm going to visit Germany and Austria a little bitby car during one week. I'm happy that we didn't choose a destination that requires a plane trip... Between the COVID restrictions in each country and the strikes at the airport, it doesn't sound relaxing for holidays...

Otherwise, I will profit to use my train subscription to visit Switzerland.

Hi beanies!

In Asia, or atleast from where I originate, newly married couples reside in the groom's house, along with the groom's parents. Sometimes, if the groom has a male sibling, whether the sibling is single or married, all of the extended family stay together under one roof. There are both pros and cons to this practice.

The benefits being sharing of household chores, always surrounded by people so there is no scope of being lonely or bored, splitting of finances so that the burden on the person with lower income is reduced and if the couples plan for a baby, the baby gets to grow with care and affection of grandparents.

The disadavantages are also in equal parts to the pros. The bride in initial stages, will be in a new environment with all strange faces and she is expected to please everyone or the bare of minimum of not dissappoint others. The privacy of couples is also exploited and they don't get to know and understand each other. The groom is put in a dilemma of choosing between his mom and his wife, whenever there is any minor disagreement between the later. As the years go by, there is numerous conflicts, adjustments and sacrifices.

In this modern era, of course, there are couples who stay independently, but the presence of patriarchy still makes it tough, especially on a majority of women by curbing their freedom.

So beanies, who are in countries where this concept does not exist or is not largely followed, can you share insights on where newly married couples reside? How they fund their housing plans pre-marriage or how they care for parents of both parties if they live independently?

In the US, the norm is that children leave the family home during college. Children are brought up to be independent. Only in the past decade, college graduates have returned home because of financial economic issues and unemployment.

Normally, young men and women get their own jobs and have their own apartments or homes. When they get married, they move into the most convenient one or if they can afford it, they will buy a new home together.

There is no great tradition of children supporting their parents. There may be a moral obligation depending on how they were raised. But more often, parents continue to support their adult children with down payments for houses or money if they are unemployed.

There is a reliance on being self-sufficient. Parents work and save for their retirements so they are not dependent on their children for support.

I second this, though this wasn't always the case. In fact, Beantown is famous for its triple-deckers, where three generations would traditionally live under one roof.
That's not the only example; i live in a structure (an old farmhouse) that housed multiple generations through the centuries, as well.

I think the difference was that each generation here typically had its own private space, where they could establish their own norms❤

its the same in the western european area im from. (single) young people are starting to move back in with their parents more frequently to save up to buy a house, though, since rent is pricy. but most couples i know are already living together in an apartment they rent before they get engaged.

In the US, statistically, women leave the family home earlier than men and tend to stay out. Men are more likely to come crawling back home after an initial foray into the big-bad world. I recently read an American advice column, a letter from a 30 year old male living with his mother, and commenters treated it as some weird abberation.

It’s interesting that men are statistically more likely to come home - I’d observed that amongst people I know that men who move back home seem to stay there for longer than women do…I wonder if that’s because we’ve trained men to be looked after and women to run a household (so moving back with mum is lovely for men but more friction for women).

In the US, my feeling is the desire to be independent from one's parents start early - working part time in high school for money to buy/maintain a car, to date/have sex, to hang out with friends doing stuff without adult supervision... Not having academic pressure like much of Asia makes this more achievable.

Oh what an interesting topic. I used to live in Asia so I know these scenarios you describe very well. I wish I had something to contribute but even though I live in Canada now, I am not close enough to anyone here to ask these questions (how they care for their parents/ how they fund their housing plans).

It does seem as if caring for your parents under the same roof after you get married is not common here, but I get the impression that it's the parents who want to be independent. That's anecdotal (from one or two coworkers of mine) so I don't know if that's typical. That makes sense to me though - if culturally people here are brought up to be independent, they will want their independence for as long as possible - not just at the start of their adult life, but also as they come to the end of it.

In New Zealand we have quite a range I think because we’re quite ethnically diverse (European, Maori, Pacific Islanders, lots and lots of immigrants from everywhere) so it probably varies depending on your culture, but for me (NZer of European descent) the norm would be to leave home for university/work, live in a shared house (flat) with other young people, then probably move into a flat with your partner before marriage (maybe still with some others to share costs), marry if you feel like it and continue to live separately from your parents. You might not even live near them and they wouldn’t expect you to support them (more likely they would try to support you).

Kids staying home longer/moving back home happens more now because there’s a squeeze on the housing market and everything is crazy expensive, but independence is kind of the expectation for everyone.

This is a good summary of Australia as well.

Also, parents want their children to be independent and 'being a burden' on your children or having them look after you in your old age is considered somewhat shameful. Most people would rather hire a carer or go into a nursing home than burden their children with their care. And most continue to support their children financially in some way.

I'm Asian. In my country, it's common for adult child to live with their parents but most usually move out right after they get married. What I observe tend to happen is for the parrents to move in with their child at later stage, either to ease the load of child rearing or because of old age. Admittedly I only have insight of the urban life, not so much the rural side.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

I finally had my first psychiatrist appointment last week and had to contact work again to finalize the paper work for another sick leave extension. The whole ordeal drained me as it usually does, so I was not able to post anything on Open Thread, What We Are Watching, or do anything else for that matter last weekend. So you are reading the story one week later since nothing much happened this week.

The road to a better me has started!💪The appointment was more of a general screening, but my psychiatrist noticed enough to temporarily diagnose a panic disorder /depression in order to fill in the paper work. That was a bit more severe than what I was suspecting, but nothing is certain yet. For now, my sick leave is extended until September. I received prescriptions for antidepressants and calming pills to help me increase serotonin and decrease anxiety.

I need to fill in a questionnaire before my first psychotherapy appointment early August. I hope that lots of talking will uncover the ugly truths that I need to know to change into a better person, because I tend to bottle things up. I am glad that my psychotherapist and psychiatrist closely work together in the same center, because their combined therapy might save me a lot of bills.

I am so happy and relieved that I can now start to do something about that mess in my head!🤗

I was wondering why Korean fantasy genre always merges with modern setup. Like I was watching Bride of the Water God and wanted more of the God's world. So I kind of started wondering why nothing mythology based is executed in more wuxia like manner?

I was slightly annoyed with Hu Ge being missing from action for so long and today came across article where he explained his recent mindset towards work - basically he is taking his time to pick the project that interests him and he is okay with being missing in action.

Anyone into Journalling? With all those stickers and washi tapes and pretty pictures? I was watching youtube videos on journalling and spent an entire day obsessing over such stuff on E-com websites.

Modern/contemporary scenes are easier and cheaper to film.

Hu Ge studied to become a director in California. Don't know what happened afterwards. Doesn't seem like he's getting opportunity to be one. Or, perhaps vast majority of Chinese drama/film projects are only so-so at best, and being a director might involve more "distasteful" outside of work stuff such that he is being both picky and careful.

While that might be the case I still wish there was some execution in that direction. How wonderful and fresh it would be.
Oh! I did not know he went to study being a director. The articles I came across said he went to learn English ( and predicting hollywood projects post that). But it is great if it was to learn to be a director. Your explaination fits well then.

I did think even if I buy will I ever be able to use them all? But even if unused those supplies must be bringing you joy whenever you look at them, right?

Hello Beans! *waves*

I am here shamelessly presenting my first analysis of a drama on DB, it's the 'supposedly short' analysis of Nevertheless based on the Codependency Theory. While I dearly hope that the FL will prove herself to be more in control when it comes to relationships, especially the intimate ones, than what I give her credit for, at this point you can read my take on it at https://www.dramabeans.com/members/mmmmm/?page=fan_wall

In the series we appear to be seeing the world through Na-bi's eyes, the story's told largely as if she were looking back on a past experience. I don't see Na-bi as a particularly reliable narrator. To me she's more morally problematic than Jae-un. Wasn't she just about to callously dump him for no good reason the end of episode 4? Isn't she now weighing her 'romantic prospects' with a fourth suitor in as many episodes?
