Little Boy - 4515k - 19th of September.

So we had an english guy wanting to have fun in most dangerous places and took little tour of Afghanistan - heh - and more importantly he was active on 4chan - then did livestream on twitch - but 4chan posts were good - 2008-2011 i was quite active on 4chan too.

I was scrolling youtube and then saw this white guy who had traveled afghanistan barely a month ago and there he was 1 more indian dude who claimed himself to be nomad traveler. Youtubers a bit less cringe than tiktokers. Tiktok means instant mental derangement - pretty similar to those korean fandoms.

The things is these youtubers try to put themsevles into infotainment category but atmost they are travel exhibitionist.
But they do show more real picture of a reagion than all those highly makeup done travel shows from various broadcasters.

As i watched 1-2 videos, youtube algo came into play and on right side started to show me various channels and youtubers making vlogs. - As expected - huge number of them belonged to indians with millions of views per video.
2 reasons - 1. youtube algo 2 - too much of indian internet population. I wasn't much impressed from any of them.
There were some videos with misinformation too. The less we talk about reaction channels and reaction videos and hoard of them trying to monetize indian internet population the better. Only if Chinese netizens had more freedom then all of youtube would have turned into typical Chinese and Indian faces reactionfest.

Overall, it was not so new but quite amusing experience.

Hello, all:
Hoping everyone is well and keeping safe.

Dramas:
The Road: Tragedy of One. This is my drama crack this season. Makjang at its best. I can hardly wait for the next episodes. The writer sets up the mysteries well. And there are a ton of mysteries in the past, present, and future. Everyone (except children under twelve) is shady but everyone is so so dang intelligent. They are great at anticipating each other's machinations and countering them. The way i see it a good makjang is not only about excitement and over the top people or even gamesmanship, it's about one vice, virtue, emotional or moral failure taken too far and how that one failure affects or works through everyone in the story-- whether it's maternal love or greed. It's about imbalance. Usually many makjangs focus on power or wounded pride or greed, but greed and power are only the atmosphere where the real theme is working itself out. In this case, we are dealing with Sunbae Baek -- and everyone else's silence. We're also dealing with truth. Truth is the highest commodity and the least important value in this drama. Anchorman Baek has two friends (I'm assuming) whom he could trust with his truth. But silence, willful blindness, lack of trust is hemming him in and imprisoning him. I feel for him because his is a case where unspoken truth kills. Not only his own sleep but everyone near him. Poor guy is trying to get some truth out on his enemies and he is utterly unable to deal with his own truth or the truths in his household. His counterpart is the narcissistic mother of a murder victim. She deals with her truth by blaming everyone else and working on her image. Things will not end well for her. Weirdly, the most honest person in the drama is Chairman Seo whom everyone fears. Because he will murder you as soon as look at you. I am in makjang heaven because the plot is so well-written but because i think its theme is so healing. Hidden truth kills.
Chinese drama: Crush. Omigosh, what a sweet drama. And a sweet OTP. Hero is blind and a songwriter, heroine is a radio newspersonality.
Japanese drama: My fair prince. I'm liking this drama. It's my first in a while. If you're up to dealing with the japanese preoccupation with teaching people how to learn how things are done to become part of the herd, and if you're not inclined to blame learning disabilities and emotional issues on laziness, this drama is total fun. Heroine is in love with her RPG character creation but when a guy shows up who looks like him but behaves unlike her prince, she'll have to change him. Yes, he needs changing ...ahem..not her.
That's it. Have a great weekend, all.

Fellow Netflix watchers! Has anyone else noticed kdrama episodes being trimmed? In the one I’m currently watching, there are bits missing which I remember when I was watching it a few years ago… (And parts of the previews randomly don’t feature…)
As far as I’m aware these aren’t controversial scenes but just adding to the length, I guess. Strange…

In other news, welcome to the weekend! ^^

I know that some of the Reply series episodes have definitely been 'trimmed'. For example, episode 18 of Reply 1994 is 100 minutes on other sites and only 74 mins. on Netflix. Thankfully I'd already watched the entire Reply series before I re-watched on Netflix - or I'd have felt very aggrieved 😤

I think there are some scenes with unlicensed music that were cut but I'm not sure if that was the only reason or if length was a factor too...

I reckon unlicensed music must be the main reason - as far as I remember I think it’s the scenes from the karaoke and club which are missing…
Although one of the side stories isn’t that coherent so I’m suspecting missing chunks of that too. :(

What kdrama did you watch? I first noticed that they changed the BGMs and songs in Reply 1988 in Netflix. It was way better when I first saw R88 in Dramafever.

Viki will give you noraebang (karaoke) scenes with an overlay of of unrelated easy listening music. It can be annoying when the contents of the song is related to the plot.

It’s quite funny sometimes when they have the translation of the original song but the song playing is clearly not that song 😅

Reminds me of the bad old days when I was watching my kdramas on cable TV. The SBS & MBC shows were intact but the channel that showed KBS chopped them all down to fit in a one-hour time slot INCLUDING COMMERCIALS. I didn't know they were doing that but somehow I didn't like hardly any KBS shows...

Back then I was getting kdrama news from Dramabeans but never commenting because the shows were all at least 2 weeks late on cable and by the time I saw them anything I had to say would have been old news. I didn't even read the recaps because I didn't want to get 2-week-old spoilers.

This all changed with School 2015. I had been impressed enough by Kim So-hyun in the past that I eagerly read the recaps of her big show and couldn't help noticing the important missing pieces when the eps finally appeared. So I switched to the internet and started watching up-to-date. Then I could comment and it's not a coincidence that my first comments were about School 2015.

I watched Reply 1988 on Netflix and noticed that a ridiculous amount of stuff was blurred out (I'm assuming for copyright reasons, but I've never seen anyone blur book titles and Pizza Hut logos). Was this the case when the show streamed on other sites?

@jance,
The only time I can recall an episode being cut was back in 2018 when ARE YOU HUMAN TOO aired on (the late, lamented) DramaFever. In episode one, fwir, almost all the scenes with Nam Shin II (Lee Joo Chan) wound up on the DF cutting room floor. I have no idea why. I just discovered that AYHT is now available subbed at Viki US and after taking a quick look Nam Shin II’s scenes are included in episode one so I will go back and rewatch episode one. (I may get hooked like @thimble below and watch the whole thing again.) AYHT was one of my favorites of 2018 and my first Seo Kang-joon drama.

Yes! As the others have mentioned, the Reply series on Netflix has been trimmed so much, including the "der des dem dem die" scene which was one of my favourites!

I also remember a scene missing from Age of Youth, something about Eunjae and her skirt. Not sure why...

Elle Magazine recently published a long article on how k-dramas have exploded in popularity in the last year due to the pandemic. One of the reasons was that normal studios were shut down so distributors ran out of "new content." K-dramas, with high production values and good, different stories captivated new audiences.

But I wonder if the k-drama umbrella will get diluted by lower production shows, mainly small companies that are adapting webtoons into YouTube viral shows. There used to be a pecking order for dramas: the big 3 k-networks used to dominate dramas; then large cable channels got into the mix -- and started to experiment with new, less conservative story lines. Now, streaming platforms are making k-dramas but run the spectrum of high to low budget.

There used to be class system: the networks had the big shows/big ratings with the best talent. Then the cable channels was a tier down in talent and budget. Then early streaming services were the minor leagues relying on new talent.

When the networks stopped creating in-house productions to outsource to independent producers, the playing field for talent, writers and directors leveled off. Now, cable channels can retain big name leads and hot writers/directors to pilot shows. But small web producers cannot.

I wonder if the international perception of quality Korean drama productions will fall a notch or two to the level of average k-drama specials since the small producers/small budget players may be able to create more content than the big players.

Thanks, pretty impressive knowledge of the drama business. I've wondered about the direction this industry is taking. Could you give examples?

1

There is a Korean in-house production company called Playlist Global on YT that creates and posts 20 minute web drama episodes, usually college/youth themes with young actors. The production and direction is basic.

Newer steaming services like TVING, backed by major media players CJ E&M and JTBC, are producing shorter series like the recent 8 episode The Witch's Diner. It can afford to cast known actors, but in the case of TWD, most of the budget was spent on set design instead of writing and direction as viewers who thought they were getting a new Hotel de Luna or Mystic Pop Up Bar were disappointed.

The business model for streaming sites is tied to production binge watching: releasing an entire season at once. The established k-production companies still rely on the live shoot method to produce 2 shows a week (or 2 to 3 hours of show). YT channels have a daily need to post new content to retain reviewers with shorter segments for the Gen Y and Z audience attention spans.

If the early trend continues, more shows will be less episodes and shorter in length which will cut down production budgets, lessen the chances for major stars to sign on board, and the quality and depth of plots will be weakened.

I think the international perception will mostly be based on the k-drama content on Netflix and soon, Disney+.

Oh, is Disney+ getting k-dramas? I know AppleTV+ is making a couple of originals (Dr. Brain and Pachinko) but have not heard that Disney+ is streaming k-dramas. Is this in the US?

Disney+ has some original kdramas in production, like one with Chae Soo-bin and Kang Daniel called "Our Police Course". They formed a partnership with the Korean production company Studio & New recently, too. Right now I don't believe they have any kdramas on service but I am guessing once their originals drop they'll start grabbing some licenses. And so our kdrama streaming becomes even more fragmented, sigh...

Oh, I didn't know that! Interesting! Thanks.

The jTBC drama "Moving" with Han Hyo Joo, Jo In Sung, and Cha Tae Hyun is supposed to stream on Disney+ plus the much anticipated "Zero" by the writer of Forest of Secrets. They are later than Netflix in the game, but attracting big talents. I imagine, if these dramas are successful, they will start competing for licenses. It's great opportunities for actors and writers, but too many streaming services in the mix for me.

I guess I'll be subscribing and dropping a lot.

3

I have seen several articles about k-dramas in the US lately, and a lot of them seem to miss the point. For many of us that are tired of totally unrealistic superhero movie #294, it is the fact that k-dramas deal a lot more with actual people issues (regardless of how unrealistic or makjang). They are more relatable than guy eating yet another radioactive cockroach or whatever - that you really don't care if he lives or dies.

Am I the only Beanie who waits until all the episodes of a drama are out before watching the whole thing over a week, glued to the TV and resenting anything and anyone that comes between me and the drama?
I truly think you who watch each episode as it comes out must have high IQ’s to be able to remember all the subtle character shifts of the several dramas you are keeping track of every week.
The disadvantage for me in focusing on one drama at a time is that I miss the fun of the beanie community response to each fresh episode.
On the other hand, a binge on the whole drama over a week's time seems to me to be a better experience. I watched the firsts 6 episodes of Hospital Playlist 2 over a few days and thought it was one of the finest Kdramas I ever saw, but if I had seen the episodes spaced over months, I would have lost track of the details and not thought as highly of it.
Currently watching the 2018 “Are You Human Too?” with the incredible Seo Kang Joon playing both human and robot parts. Can’t imagine a better drama. It would be impossible for me to catch all the subtle changes in the robots face as he becomes more human if I only saw it once a week.

I will with some shows. Part of me wonders if I watched all of Imitation in one sitting if I would have liked the second half more. As you've pointed out, there is certainly some information I just forget during the week. (YAMS has me right now wondering if I missed a detail about the mystery.)
What I really like about watching it all at the same time is the lack of waiting between episodes. I may not be confused by the mystery because the last episode may explain (vs me considering if I missed a detail). Plus, there have been a few were I didn't trust the ending would land, or I wanted to avoid certain things (like death of parent), so I wanted to wait it out to see that I wouldn't end up regretting watching it.
But I'm not sure if the anticipation of waiting for the next episode makes me more interested in the drama. During the break between episodes is the chance to talk with others about it, speculate on what is to come, and re-watch. If I watch it once, I seem to only interact about it after its done, while once-a-week results in me interacting each week its out, so in a way I would end up interacting with the drama less and not have as much nostalgia for it.

Watching 'On The Verge of insanity' I jump on the episode as soon as I notice its out, watch it up till I run out of subtitles, then wait for half a day then watch it some more. I did the same for SKY Castle. Usually I'm content to wait til its 100% subbed, or with other shows I wait til there's a backlog of 4-5 episodes before watching. If I wait til it finished airing I'm likely to never go back to watch it.

I'm used to watching multiple shows at once so I might have adapted when it comes to remembering different plots from previous episodes. That being said I can also forget about it sometimes depending on how invested I am in the show :P
Nowadays I tend to prioritize the ones that I want to watch in real time and those that I can wait for it to be completed to binge watch later.

I have done both... watching two episodes every week while airing and exchanging comments with the beanies, as well as binge watching in less than a week..
For my health, being able to go to bed early, I like live watching better.
Of course, it has disadvantages, like... a drama turns out badly half way through and you are not even satisfied with badmouthing it online but you want to drop it...
But still, since I don't have enough will power, in order to binge watch in a healthy way... I rather watch live.😅😅😅😅😅😅
Very personal opinion.

I'm sure there are other Beanies out there like you. I live-watch a couple (mostly just one at a time though) but I usually have 4 fully completed K dramas I watch on rotation with an animated series (could be anime, or the Disney kind, or the adult cartoon kind), another Asian drama (either Chinese, Taiwanese, or Japanese, sometimes Thai), and a non-Asian series (American, British, Canadian, etc. I'm currently watching Losing Alice on AppleTV+ which is from Israel). I flit from one to the other rather than binge watch one show though, sometimes I read recaps or listen to a podcast after an episode. It's slow going but it lets me absorb the stories better. I don't know anyone else who watches like I do (although, I never really ask people their TV watching habits).

I have encountered some posts where people have spreadsheets - I do as well. I have two of them - one on TV shows and films I want to watch, the other on those I finished watching (including my rating, genre, sub genre, main theme, country of origin, setting, time period, etc.). I also use iMDB and MyDramaList to keep track of shows/films I finished. I admit, I'm rather obsessively organized about this.

https://www.koreaboo.com/news/lovelyz-mijoo-jun-jihyun-anycall-parody-samsung-flip/

I had a fun parody ad! While waiting Jun Ji-hyun's new TvN thriller Cliffhanger in two months' time, she made a parody of a 2007 cellphone Anycall Color ad by someone's famous: a member of K-pop girl group was no other than Mijoo from Lovelyz! Mijoo made a parody ad of another cellphone/tech(!) commercial with the launching of the latest Samsung Z Flip 3. For me, Samsung Z Flip 3 was not only one of the best Samsung products ever but one of the best inventions of 2021 even Mijoo was an endorser of this new mobile phone. Now back to Jun Ji-hyun, when she was an endorser from Anycall, it was popular during the golden cellphone era at the time. That was before Legend of the Blue Sea fame, that was before her Kingdom fame and now, that was 14 years before her lead actress in upcoming TV thriller Cliffhanger.

Say goodbye to 'Nevertheless' this weekend. Love it or hate it, its one of the few dramas that could get up to 130 comments on a recap these days. A drama you can argue over is the best kind of drama. I don't see another drama like that on the near horizon, unless we get into an argument over just how cute Shin Min-ah is playing a dentist.

Happy weekend all! We’re day 4 of our covid lockdown (it’s been extended from 3 days to a week, but I foresee at least a fortnight minimum). It’s fine, but I have a horrible cold (not covid!) which is making looking after three kids a lot harder work than it normally is. Still, we’ve been baking and doing art and gardening (well, digging a big hole in my vegetable garden and filling it with water and creating a giant mudbath, but it’s fun) so we’re surviving.

At the moment I’m finishing a bunch of dramas that I never finished for various reasons. I’m going to give Personal Taste and Into The Ring both a second try and will see how I go this time.

I could go for a drive in the countryside or... go for a drive in the countryside. These days I', watching older K-dramas just for the scenes of crowded subways, bustling sidewalk traffic, city lights at night. I miss the pre-pandemic big city.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

I am going to try and treat myself to a lazy watching weekend after this heavy week. The week started on a sad note as a result of my very confronting therapy homework and nightmares about it, joined by anxiety by the end of the week as I had to call into work again to arrange my sick leave extension. Everything ended well as usual, but the heavy emotions and large amount of small tasks always overwhelm me and it might take more than a weekend to catch up on sleep and rest.😴

Not to mention K-dramas. August and September alone offer about a dozen titles that either caught my attention or were recommended by you generous Beanies! I have been lacking the time and right mindset to jump into another adventure after Racket Boys. Now I am torn between getting a head start on the shows that are already airing, resulting in more shows to juggle later on, and waiting for the favorites but maybe missing out on some gems. My schedule looks nearly empty from tomorrow onwards, which is very, very fishy.🤔

Like you I am waiting for several dramas to begin (D.P. CHA CHA CHA, RED SKY) but my viewing card is a bit open right now so after hesitating, yesterday I took the plunge into POLICE UNIVERSITY and really enjoyed the first 2 episodes. I will watch episodes 3 and 3 today and be caught up.
I hesitated because I thought the pre airing PR was a bit too cute and even though I enjoyed TEAM BULLDOG I wasn’t ready for TB 2.
Cha Tae-hyun does play a similar character but it looks like there is a great ensemble cast and the police university setting should be very interesting. Also the early reviews from beanies on (POL U) have been positive. This is my first Jung Jin-young drama and he was terrific in the first two episodes.
(Once again in kdrama land we have a 30 year old (JJY) in RL playing a 19ish high school student. With his looks and slight build he pulls it of if only barely for me lol. I do buy into his character.)
I just thought I would give you a recommendation.

Hello there,

The first semester of this academic year started last week, and I was totally caught off-guard. The new semester came with new peers and new subjects. I liked it. The best part of it is that I just formed a study group, as suggested by @wishfultoki, and I think it should be fun. We will hold our study time together every week to summarize what has been taught in that week. At this point, I don't care much about what I'm gonna gain, but only the prospect of talking to someone despite everything being online sounds so good already. :)

In terms of drama watching, I did start Stove League some days ago and thought it was a fun and gripping drama. Certain aspects of it, again, are quite makjang, but it was very good in the most part. Nam Goong-min sure deserved the Daesang from this performance here as I really enjoyed his character. There were some moments that his subtle facial expressions really contributed a lot to how invested I was in that scene. I'm happy about this one.

I hope everyone has a good weekend and continue to stay safe and happy.

Hi Beanies!

There was one moment this week when I felt really down. I was sick of staying/working from home all day and frustrated because there's really nothing much I can do about it. My mom, who thought there was some work trouble, asked if I intended to look for a new company and I was quick to say, "What? No. I love my job. I like my colleagues." And I meant it! And just like that my spirits were lifted.

Today I had tonkatsu, rice balls, and kimchi. And a bag of freshly ground coffee. It smells so gooooooood. Food and kdramas are all I need.
