TGIF! Happy Birthday (3 Dec) to Hwang Chi Yeul! :) HCY will be holding his first solo concert in two years in Seoul on 4 & 5 Dec, I'll be watching online :) Here's hoping that he will sing at least three of his OSTs, especially "Even For A While", ending OST of "Ruler - Master of the Mask". Even for HCY I couldn't finish the drama, because the writers lost the plot.

Here is a clip of HCY performing live "Even For A While" at his first solo concert in South Korea - in June 2017. Thanks to the uploader: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIjSYaw2Wgk "gotong sogui harureul sarado"

I like his OSTs! I don’t remember anything from “Ruler”, but I do have his OST and Yang Yo-seob’s “Tree” osts in my playlist. His Killing Voice was also nice!

Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo had a recent article lamenting the lack of A-list actresses being ratings winners.

The results have mostly disappointing. Lee Young-ae starred in "Inspector Koo," Ko Hyun-jung in "Reflection of You" and Jeon Do-yeon in "Lost," but the dramas are losing viewers with every episode and their star power seems lacking to carry a show.

"Jirisan," which was subject to a lot of hype thanks to Jeon Ji-hyun in the starring role and top script writer Kim Eun-hee, was panned for its bizarre visual effects and a strange plot.

The writer indicated that Just a few years ago their presence alone would have guaranteed success, and each episode would spark a fad for what they wore and ate and which location they visited that mean tastes are shifting?

Song Hye-kyo is the only one of the country's top stars currently doing well with "Now We Are Breaking Up," but her power of generating headlines seems to be somewhat diminished. "It feels like watching any soap that Song did in the past," one viewer commented.

The real question is not whether a top actor can carry a marginal show across the finish line, but whether other factors such as PPL, budgets, advertising and streaming options are diluting the star power (actors, director and writer) that used to make quality shows.

As I have said before, traditional network ratings is more a gauge of netizen "buzz" over a show rather than a true rating meter because the fragmented viewing habits of people.

"It feels like watching any soap that Song did in the past," one viewer commented.

It feels sacrilegious to translate dramas as "soaps."

In fact, Jeon Ji-hyun is doing better than Song Hye-kyo since Jirisan airs on cable, but it also stars an A-list actor while Now, We Are Breaking Up only stars one of the trends.

I think the author is confused. Shk's drama is faring worse than Jjh's. Both are averaging 7% but Jirisan is on TVN (cable) while NWBU is on SBS (free). NWBU ratings should be in double digits.

True that I doubt ratings are now a measure of a drama's success. The audiences are fragmented but more than star power, good directing, writing and acting are behind a drama's success. The red sleeve cuff is a good example. Though the actors have star power but not as much as other big names.

Public sentiment is unpredictable, I think.
For example, in these 2 years since the pandemic started, I kinda lost all of my interest in depressing, stressful dramas. I want fluff, sth that is easy to digest, sth light and funny to lift up my mood.

This means that no matter which projects there stars go to, if it’s not what I’d watch at the moment then I won’t. There are plenty of dramas out there in so many streaming sites, I’m not obliged to choose just only the currently airing dramas.

Definitely agree. I’m not interested in depressing (thrillers are fine if they are actually engaging). I will go way back to find something fun rather than just watch something new because it’s new.

For the same reasons, Hospital Playlist S1 an S2 will be remembered in the years to come as one drama we all watched during the pandemics for the comfort and positivity it gives us. Not that it’s the perfect or best drama but a piece that incidentally fits into our psyche.

I didn't see Jirisan nor the others but Reflection of You was an incredibly well done, well acted drama with some of the best cinematography out there and music. I know it didn't get enough viewers and I get why. This isn't a show where infidelity is painted as a black and white scenario. It was heavy, it was raw, it had some real but pretty much flawed, unlikable characters. But it still left me feeling gutted by the end. I did end up caring for the characters. And no caring doesn't mean I like them but it was good. Its sad it didn't pick up more viewers but I am still glad it was made. Awards will ignore it but Go Hyun Jung, Shin Hyun Bin, Kim Jae Young and Choi Won Young deserve so much accolades for carrying a drama that could have gone incredibly wrong in lesser hands.

It was a commenter on the 'Dramas Over Flowers' podcast calling 'Jirisan' 'Lynchian' (like Twin Peaks) that sent me back rewatching. I had dropped it originally as episode one because it seemed too generic. It the series turns bizarre maybe I'll revisit it.

Any guesses on why for KBS’s upcoming 32 episode S/S sageuk TAEJONG YI BANG WON (Joo Sang-wook, Park Jin-Hee) no information on international licensing and availability as been released? Episode one will air next Saturday, Dec. 11.

No, I’m pretty sure it will be 32 hour-long episodes! A far cry from the usual KBS weekend sageuks of the past, which were often 50+ or even 100+ episodes.

Hey guys... So I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the roundup posts. Enjoying reading others but can't get myself to post about my own opinions. I'm starting by commenting on other's round up posts. Btw is anyone watching Melancholia. I'm quite liking it and the teacher student relationship was well done but felt like the characters could've avoided some situations. Very disheartening seeing no one about it here and also the low ratings. I mean it's not that bad of a drama right??

So, about the roundup. Last year, instead of posting everyday I was posting every 3 or 4 days, and skipped some prompts because I couldn't think of anything to say. Some Beanies posted all the prompts in a go instead of going day by day. Others changed prompts for others they felt more like talking about. And loads of people just comment or like or simply lurk around giggling behind their screens. The whole point is having fun and feeling part of the Beanie community, so there's really no wrong way to do this. You do you 💚
PS: about Melancholia, I really love the leads but feel queasy about the concept. If you like it all the way to the end, please do tell!

Yes will do!! I'm upto episode 7 and the only queasy thing there is the people taking advantage of a high school student having a massive crush on his teacher/mentor. I actually avoided it because of that subject and started late but I just could'nt pass up a LDH drama. The student teacher situation is upto ep 6 only and from there he is a legal adult and no longer a student of any kind. Give it a go if you like Lee Do Hyun. He is killing it.

Happy friday, beanies!
Only two more days to Sunday! My entire week is being reduced to waiting for new episodes of RED SLEEVE and RAINLESS LOVE IN A GODLESS LAND. My children have also been down with the flu this past week so I've had nothing better to do than to clean and watch dramas. The OST of Rain God is also wonderful, a tad on the mystic and bit of the traditional, it fits so well into the story-telling. I started watching SCHOLAR WHO WALKS THE NIGHT after seeng a music video of Lee Soo hyuk as evil vampire and.... well, what more reason could I ever need?

Where did the time go? Seeing all the round-up is making me panicky that 2021 just flew by and all I can say is, I haven’t done much but lived life vicariously through kdramas and cdramas.

Also, it’s my birth month so that’s always kept me happy! Any other December beanie babies?

I do not have a December birthday, but I am so relieved that someone else expresses my own fear that I am living too vicariously through kdramas. I mean, I have a loving spouse, so its not that when I watch, say romances, that I am ACTUALLY imagining MYSELF in these situations (and for other genres, especially NOT when I watched Squid Games !) But I do worry that I am so caught up in these imaginary worlds. I should be doing something constructive, like making the earth a better place, instead of refining my skills as a couch potato! But, on the other hand, maybe my purpose in life is to be the best couch potato I can be!

I'm with you on being the best couch potato. Dramas are great but sometimes I wish I'd also be living my own life rather than only living vicariously through dramas plus have any productive habits rather than a few hours of instant gratification.

I think a nice balance is needed! On one hand, we only live once and should definitely try and get what we want out of our own lives. On the other hand, the things we experience in dramas and other works of fiction are often situations that we would never in a million years encounter in real life, no matter how much time we have on this Earth, and I love that I can "live" so many experiences by just picking up a book or watching a drama. I think watching dramas can also help you decide what you want in your own life--bring your attention to a career you weren't familiar with, evaluate the relationships in your own life and, when consumed smartly, build critical thinking skills! Just don't spend your time on the couch 24/7!

You are right, a good balance should be there that you don't indulge enough foregoing important things. But so is the pleasure for watching dramas or reading books important. I don't like to call it guilty pleasure because I even do feel so lately, we shouldn't feel guilty for enjoyng dramas and taking a break from life.

Beanies, I'm home! Don't feel like going into much detail, because it was a tough ride. But now it's all behind me, and I'm focusing on healing (and getting a session with my therapist pronto!). Drama watching is therapeutic too, so I've been doing a lot of healing these days ☺️ And now that Beanies' drama roundup started, it's so much fun to read and to take notes about what I've missed (Vincenzo, cough)

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

It is December!!!😱Time probably died of covid in March last year, because no one seems to know where or what it is.🧐 In my case it is a lifelong frenemy. Timing on the other hand, has proclaimed itself my anxiety planner. It convinced my health insurance company that the right time to inform me of the inaccuracies in my medical file was right when my friend arrived for a sleepover last Saturday. It also nudged the control doctor to visit right when I was going for a walk only a few blocks further.🤦‍♀️It all worked out in the end, but the extra anxiety was not needed.

Third time's a charm apparently, so I am curious whether the next week will actually, genuinely be a calm one for a change.😆Then again, I am aiming for Fifth Theme of the Month Post, participating in #2021RoundUp, reading Christmas stories, finishing K-dramas and hopefully starting new ones from next week onwards. Now if I just could start writing and press the play button, that would be great.😂

Like most people, I can't believe it's December. Or maybe I can, but like - December 2019? What is time when 2020 didn't exist and 2021 melted like a cheap birthday candle on a cake you ate by yourself because you were in lockdown.

Hmm... cake...

Anyway, despite my disbelief, it is indeed that time of the year. The time for reflection, introspection, dissection (vivisection?) of our drama year.

For the past few years, we've run an End of Year drama poll of our own and this year is no exception.

What was the best drama? Your favourite? The one that made you laugh or cry the most. Now is your chance to let us know.

http://invisibledragon.home.blog/2021/12/02/2021-in-kdrama-the-end-of-year-poll/

Results will be on the blog before the end of the year.

Vote now! Vote often!

The podcast 'Dramas over Flowers', which has not really liked much of anything for much of the year, has decided it LOVES the revenge drama 'My Name'. Unstinting praise for the series. They also abruptly decided to LOVE 'Yumi Cells', as well, after being initially hesitant to even check it out. They also got caught up in the global fascination for 'Squid Games', despite being initially hesitant.
Y'know, if we remember back we'll recall there were some good series this year, rthough they were overshadowed by the bad stuff. Including 'On The Verge of Insanity' and 'Mad For Each Other'.
