What are your favorite banchan? Particularly ones that can be made ahead of time. I'm having some friends over and don't want to be in the kitchen the whole time they are here! I've made plenty in the past, but always looking for new favorites!

It depends on what you are looking for--a piquant relish type of dish, or a more substantial "side." For the first I like cucumber pickles (oi muchim) stir fried anchovies ( Myeolchi bokkeum--a great sweet-salty flavor) and any type of quick kimchi--korean or daikon radish is my favorite, but you can really use any sort of raw vegetable--cucumbers (again) carrots, or of course cabbage.

For more substantial sides I like braised tofu, (dubu jorim) carmelized sweet potatoes (goguma mattang) and zucchini fritters (hobak jeon). Although these are all probably best fresh from the pan, I have in the past kept them warming in the oven and they taste fine.

Its always a lot of fun to make these

Oi muchim and various kimchis are planned already, along with braised tofu! And I love making jeon of all kinds, but I'm trying to stay away from them because they are so much better fresh.

I've had trouble sourcing the right size anchovies for stir frying in the past, so that's not one I've dipped into yet, but recently discovered a new market that stocks them, so I will try it soon! I love gamja bokkeum, but haven't ever tried goguma mattang, so maybe I'll have to give that a go too. Thanks!

I've made lots of vegan kimchi before because I wasn't able to find saeujeot. But I recently sourced some so now I'm planning a kimjang soon to make that version! As for the kimchi for today, I bought some baechu kimchi because I ran out of mine, but there is oi-sobagi that I made.

1

Sounds wonderful, you are talented!

2

I'm going to make kimchi soon as well. Unfortunately, I don't have enough Korean food friends for a kimjang. But maybe that's okay, because it would primarily be my bossy daughter helping, and I get enough critiques of my cooking with just her eating what I make!

Magazine writer Zeahaa Rehman recently wrote on the demise of North American rom-com genre. Hollywood is not investing in much except blockbuster superhero movies, studio pet projects or animation sequels. As culture writer Elamin Abdelmahmoud wrote earlier this year, Hollywood has “arrived at the nadir of original stories,” capitalizing on audience familiarity to ensure maximum profitability. Rom-coms were made and shown in theaters until 2000 but did not have large box office numbers. Before streaming services existed, those films made revenue through both the initial release of a movie as well as DVD sales. Having two streams of revenue, as Matt Damon explained during his recent appearance on Hot Ones, made it possible for studios to invest in riskier films—like rom-coms—because even if they underperformed at the box office, they could make up for it in DVD sales. Streaming services killed DVD sales and offered only low licensing fees in return, leading studios to stick with films guaranteed to make a profit when widely released in theaters.

Ironically, today the biggest force to push audiences toward K-dramas is the very force that led to the rom-com drought in Hollywood: Netflix. As K-pop’s visibility increased in American pop culture, so did Netflix’s K- drama offerings which were different, well-made and limited series runs that hit a good chord with viewers.

I know streaming services are content consumption monsters that need a steady stream of content to get and retain subscribers. International TV shows are easy to license or adapt for new markets. But the need to feed the beast may create a saturation point of poor dramas, second seasons, etc. which will lead to another change to find a new genre to exploit.

Hollywood makes films for global consumption. I think that has greatly effected what kind of stories that are told. Really, you have to go back decades (pre-1980's) to get many rom-coms. I think another issue is that rom-coms are considered films for women, therefore believed that they would not make as much money and they were/are considered less prestigious and not serious. So, a director that wants to make a film that is "artistic" would never consider such a "trivial" theme as love. The daily soap operas were based on love stories, therefore, they are always considered diminished in terms of importance and artistry. There was an interesting article in the NYTimes today which tends to have really great coverage of S. Korea lately. Perhaps it is somewhat relevant. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/27/opinion/south-korea-fertility-rate-feminism.html

Asian society principles that women had to get married by 30 and have children is pretty much gone by the rise in education and careers for women in an industrialized country. Culturally, there is less of a stigma against single men and women. Many believe marriage is no longer required for stability and happiness.

South Korea recently broke its own record for the world’s lowest fertility rate, with data from November 2022 showing a South Korean woman will have an average of 0.79 children in her lifetime – far below the 2.1 needed to maintain a stable population. Japan’s fertility rate stands at 1.3, while the United States is at 1.6.

Japan is on pace to lose 20% of its population by 2050. At that time, it will not be able to support its social safety net programs and some experts predict its society will collapse. The main reason is its anti-immigration policy and strong cultural pressure against outsiders "contaminating" family bloodlines.

South Korea is more progressive on immigration and inter-racial marriages so its population may be more stable now but it will have the same issues of Japan on sustainability of its national heritage.

The problem comes if any nation regards its "heritage" as fixed. Then you get panicked and often culturally stifling measures, that risk undermining progressive gains. A more open society is always better, and more culturally rich. You can preserve those parts of the past that are of value, but there is absolutely no reason to preserve patriarchal repression.

If life is even remotely like what you see in kdramas, it’s a wonder why anyone has children - the pressure seems immense.

Here the fertility rate is 1.65, which makes my family seem huge (we have three kids) - it’s not surprising given cost of living/more opportunities available to women/changing cultural expectations but it still also does surprise me how quickly family sizes have changed - when I was a teenager (not THAT long ago but still pretty long I guess lol) it wasn’t uncommon for people to have three or more siblings but among people I know I can only think of two families with more children than ours.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

This is completely unfactually based, but perhaps it's because South Koreans are generally responsible given the historically Confucian society. Couple that with higher education and practicality, it may be career-related and socioeconomic. I like children, but I chose not to have any of my own due to my unwillingness to compromise career advancement and the high costs of raising them well, especially in a high cost-of-living city like NYC.

And speaking of changing expectations, the Chosun Ibo reported this today:

An increasing number of Koreans believe that success is when their children find a job they like rather than a place at a top university or a big conglomerate, a survey suggests.

The Korean Educational Development Institute polled 4,000 parents nationwide last September. Asked what success in their children's education means, the largest proportion or 25.8 percent of respondents ticked finding a job they like or want to do.

Next came growing up as a well-rounded person (22.7 percent); landing a highly-regarded job (20.5 percent); being economically well-off (14.3 percent); studying at a prestigious university (10.1 percent); and finding a good spouse (6.6 percent).

Whenever people talk about their favorite US rom-coms they talk about movies perhaps 30 years old. Billy Crystal ('When Harry Met Sally') is now 74 years old. Anything that gets made resembling a rom-com these days is likely to be a no-budget indie GL film.

Maybe there is more cynicism regarding romance in general. Example, couples now seem to fight over whether or how to "fairly" bills during dates. People share online much of their "real life" experiences: Some stuff might be as interesting or nutty as what scriptwriters can come up; people can consume it whenever, wherever and take much less time doing so.

Also, streaming platforms creating their own exclusive content including rom-com is taking investment and limiting what are available in theaters.

Hello fellow beanies I’m wondering what upcoming dramas you are excited about and why?

There are so many coming out it’s hard to keep track but I think these are the ones I’m most interested in

BAIT:
Watching because of Jang Geun-seok obviously

OUR BLOOMING YOUTH:
I love most of writer Jung Hyun-jung works. They excel at showcasing the complexities of love and I sometimes feel they get stifled when they have to write within the rom com script. One of my favourite works by them was MY FIRST TIME. The male lead didn’t get the girl, tho it was a great coming of age story where he experiences unrequited love. The friendship group was also adorable.

HATE TO LOVE YOU:
I might drop this if it doesn’t capture my interest in the first episode, but how can I say no to Kim Ji-hoon?

HEAVENLY IDOL:
Camp it’s looks so camp and I’m definitely here for it. Also I like both the lead actors, Kim Min-kyu & Go Bo-gyeol

UNLOCKED (movie):
The trailer was very compelling. It’s an interesting concept and very creepy. Also top notch cast

TAXI DRIVER 2:
Lee Je-hoon, Lee Je-hoon, Lee Je-hoon, Lee Je-hoon, Lee Je-hoon & Lee Je-hoon

That’s how many Lee Je-hoon pictures came out on the press release right?

Among these I'm probably looking forward to Heavenly Idol the most. I need more shows that make me laugh.

I tend to not remember upcoming dramas unless i see the promos really close to the release date but i have put Hate to Love You and Unlocked on my NF list. I desperately miss a good old fashioned mystery-free romcom, so i hope this is a good one.

As for Unlocked, trailer was scary creepy and i worry it may either induce some paranoia about my phone security or motivate me to disconnect more often.. we’ll see!

And YES to Lee Je Hoon!

Required fields are marked *

Okay so I don’t want to bring the lively energy from a certain recap comment section which I am honestly too scared to enter. That said, this certain drama gave three examples of co-habitation pet peeves. I’m wondering which one you’d find to be the most offensive?

DISHES:
Dishes are a point of contention in any relationship so it’s a valid pet peeve, but I have a dishwasher so I’m cool with doing the dishes

AIRCON:
Peoples temperatures vary, and thus the aircon temperature setting is also a point of contention, I run hot so yeah this is my biggest pet peeve. I want my aircon sorry climate change (I’ll be better with my recycling)

HOGGING THE TV:
I feel like this would’ve been a pet peeve two decades ago, but now with most people having either a laptop or smartphone, someone hogging the TV doesn’t feel like a big deal. I’d just go another room and watch on my laptop

5
31
reply

Required fields are marked *

I feel like hogging the tv is less of a big deal too BUT if you could never go into a common area because someone was always using the tv that would be annoying.

I’m not sure between dishes and air con - probably dishes, but then I don’t live somewhere where air con is an issue most of the time so I have less experience with that. But dishes are an endless annoyance 😄

5

True dishes are annoying, but since I annoy people with my aircon preferences, I’ll happily sacrifice the ten minutes to load and unload the dishes 😁

That’s probably what’s going to have to happen around here. If you don’t take care of your things, I guess you don’t want them 😅

6

That's so harsh! You're giving your kids a trauma that will undermine all their adult relationships!

3

@hacja, if I’m going to cause some inevitable mama trauma, I feel like this falls on the milder end of the spectrum, which some counselling will hopefully sort out. I’ve started saving for the cost of therapy, which I’ve prioritised over university tuition.

8

‘ I’ve started saving for the cost of therapy, which I’ve prioritised over university tuition.’ 👈love this investment approach to life. If only they did that in K dramas instead of using a potential love interest as an unpaid mind reader/therapist/miracle maker.

4

My husband is the worst at this. He can put something in the general area where it's supposed to be but never get it right. Sometimes, I think it's his way of sticking it to the man.

I feel I like I got better at this after reading Marie Kondo’s book but yeah still 50/50, working on it. I do have a close enough pet peeve tho. I hate having food scraps and dishes near where I sleep. This actually became a mini fight with my friends during the holidays haha

I chose the sofa because I tend to have insomnia (thanks dramabeans…joking joking). So when we all headed to sleep I put all the food scraps in the bin and the remaining dishes in dishwasher. Alas one of my friends got upset that I put their half eaten burrito in the bin. I was like babe you know I was sleeping here, if you still wanted it, put it in fridge yourself. Yeah I feel like I should put this in the reddit thread Am I the Asshole? Maybe I was? Dunno

3

It'll be the Aircon for me. I can't deal with cold temperature. I prefer hot to cold actually. So if I need the hot down, it's just to room temp and I'm fine. The lowest breeze from the Aircon, just high enough to not make the air stuffy is okay. I hope we can work with that.

TV hogging...I have my smartphone.
Dishes...I'm lazy on that so I'll wait for you to be done with your biz and we'll come do the dishes together.

But the Aircon is a no-no and will become a recipe for us sleeping in different rooms if the symptoms persist.

none of these bothers me that much. I never had a dishwasher and learn how to like doing it since young so now its almost like therapy lol aircon and tv I think they're bearable. I don't like using aircon, but if the other person is super hot, I would just have another blanket. with tv... I would just use another screen. i don't really like watching something with other people in general hahaha

but what bothers me is not doing your tasks. if we have an agreement, do it. if something comes up and you can't do it for whatever reason, communicate. we can always help each other, just don't ignore it because I will be counting on you.

I'm really sensitive when it comes to my movies, dramas, and especially my "me" or relaxing time.

The dishes isn't a big deal, next time I'll leave them for you to clean.
I sleep as a rock so if you turn off the air con while I'm sleep, I'll probably won't notice, but changing the movie I'm watching for something I dislike can get them killed. 😆 That's something really inconsiderate from my POV, especially because my partner should know that they can't interrupt me when I'm watching something.

Surely, that’s a basic courtesy whoever is in the room first takes the priority position so if the second person wants to watch something else they can sort themselves out without disrupting the first person. Still getting used to 2023? It is almost February. Already.

Half January is when new year resolutions usually are dropped, but it seems like I am lucky this year. Until two weeks ago I was bored and restless, but then I started getting struck with motivation and I am milking it as much as I can.💪🏻Suddenly I am working on that essay I kept postponing, scheduling those dreadful appointments, fully booking my weekends until end February and watching three shows.☺️

All it took was bingeing four K-drama episodes one Sunday afternoon, which proves my theory that Beanies are at their best when they watch K-dramas regularly!😁

I wonder if Hollywood lack of imagination is going to last forever or is just a temporary slump.
I feel like I'll go crazy if there's another year where the "favorite" movies are just a bad remake, biography or a wannabe Edgar Wright trying to direct Neon Genesis Evangelion after reading a marvel multiverse fanfiction about east asian stereotypes (yes, I didn't like EEAAO).

I watch old movies, indie movies, and movies from other productions and countries, but I literally have no one to talk about them. The only link I had with other film lovers (friends) was Hollywood. But now I don't feel like watching those movies anymore, especially because even if we talk about them, I just talk about how much I hate them while they look at me like a boring witch because they loved them.

Maybe I'm being over dramatic, but I just feel more and more insulted by Hollywood and I feel like they're destroying one of my favorite things.
If only my friends watched what I recommend them, I probably wouldn't be so salty, since I could just use my energy taking with them about the other films.

However he does not remember the titles, and was only able to mention Alchemy of souls, Crash landing on you and love alarm.
What was quite fun, is that another person at the table started to talk about her webtoon readings.
Thus when he went "there is another SF story, with the FL able to see the future when she touches someone" we both exclaimed together Kiss 6th sense.
It was fun and strange to talk (not write) about dramas.
Still, they both have difficulties with specifics terms such as chaebol [you can picture me eyerolling] so this will not replace the discussion here soon.

Hello, all:

Am so loving Crash Course in Romance. This is such a sweet romance. I find myself getting very angry at all the intrusive people in the world. If people could just live and let live, life would be beautiful. I think, though, that even if the supreme court said the son wasn't guilty, i think the son killed his mom because he was angry with his mom for being the cause of his sister's suicide, plus the son was also just trying to free himself from his helicopter mom. I really dislike Chiyeolsucks and am wary of the hikkikomori brother. (sorry, i don't know the Korean term for a willful shut-in.) Am not sure if he has something against Chiyeol personally or if he hates what Chiyeol represents. As for the kid who killed himself, I wish the 5th and sixth episodes had shown the grief of his bereaved parents. The story showed how sad the parents were about it but it totally ignored his family. Which was a bit of a mistake, i think. Granted, they did a great job on showing how overwhelmed and depressed our Sen is. I love, love, love it that this show is so human. The characters are so real and our male lead is so fragile and needy. It's an adult romance and so very humanistic. The female lead is so sweet too and the fact that they learn to become friends before they become romantically-involved, it just shows the power of friendship. Our male lead has found a friend, yay!!!!! He really needed it. Our heroine has sacrificed her life to be a mom and now she is finding love. Sooo good. The best slice-of-life romance kdrama this year so far. We see how wonderful life would be if people would chill and accept each other. The show does a great job of showing us that judging people by appearance, class, wealth, looks... is just devastating. Sometimes a big devastation like a suicide, and sometimes a lingering devastation like a depressed teacher whose heart only few can see. Between Alchemy of Souls, The Glory, Crash Course and Bait, it's been a great month for kdramas.

Best Cdramas this season so far: The Knockout, Choice Husband, New Life Begins.

I highly recommend Beyond the Infinite Two minutes J-movie on amazon Prime. a Japanese time travel movie on AmazonPrime. Typical Japanese tongue-in-cheek weirdness. A guy and his friends in his cafe are ahead of themselves in time, by two minutes. I'll just say a lot can happen within the space of two minutes. When it comes to japanese timey-wimey spacey-wacey playful specfic: these five are my favorites, ranging from the tragic to the silly:
You whom i promised never to forget
One cut of the dead.
Rashomon
Beyond the infinite two minutes
My tomorrow, your yesterday
And now I know the Droste Effect and the Bourton-on-the-Water model village
Happy weekend, all.

Oh, Mudeokie, nice to see you again. Time flies, no? Some of us have missed you in these parts.
I’m a bit embarrassed that I’m still smarting over how disappointing the second part of AoS turned out to be despite some lovely moments. I know, I know. I’ve told myself to move on too.

I’ve been watching “My country” and it is wonderful despite being soul-crashingly sad at times. So worth staying with it though but I can’t binge it.

And, “Flower Crew” which is a weird show. The evolution of some characters seem inexplicable in a realistic sense and others show bad judgment throughout but the main leads have chemistry and that’s the main life blood of this drama. And, the hanboks the crew are wearing. Some are dazzlingly gorgeous. Worth staying just for these silk/silk looking beauties move and flutter about.
