Burt Bacharach died this week. He cowrote with Hal David for 1970 No. 1 hit Close to You from The Carpenters. Close to You was one of the best Bacharach-David hits of all time. But in 2015, Close to You was used as non-OST for MBC Kdrama She Was Pretty.

If you want a big Korean corporate drama to watch, I recommend reading about the SM Entertainment battle royale.

HYBE, the management agency behind superstar boy band BTS, will become the biggest shareholder of its K-pop rival, SM Entertainment.
The move strengthens HYBE’s dominance in South Korea’s music industry, where it is already the biggest player, even as it seeks to expand abroad with the recent acquisition of a US-based hip-hop label that features artist Lil Cherry.

The South Korean entertainment giants announced the deal Friday, with HYBE set to pick up a 14.8% stake in SM Entertainment for $334.5 million from its founder and largest shareholder Lee Soo-man.

Meanwhile, HYBE Labels intends on acquiring up to 40% of total shares in SM Entertainment by March 1 with strong support from founder Lee Soo Man, setting its sights on re-acquiring significant control of SM Entertainment's operations.

This is in response to co-CEOs Lee Sung Soo and Tak Young Joon’s sale just three days ago of newly issued shares to internet/media giant Kakao for a 9.05 % stake in the company. That transaction is now a subject of a lawsuit by Lee Soo-man to void it. Likewise, the co-CEOs are challenging the HYBE transaction as a “hostile takeover.”

SM was founded by legendary music producer Lee Soo-man, who is widely referred to in South Korea as “the godfather of K-pop.” The company is known for representing hit artists, such as NCT 127, EXO, BoA and Girls’ Generation. However, in recent years he came under fire for being the “sole producer” of all acts of the company, reaping millions of dollars in fees directly for himself. When he was pushed out of CEO, he maintained a long term multimillion dollar fee arrangement that new managers believe is unconscionable.

Bernie Cho, a Seoul-based music industry executive, said the two deals announced were unlike anything he’d seen This “may be the biggest one-two power punch I’ve ever seen or heard [of] in the history of the K-pop industry,” said Cho, president of DFSB Kollective, a music artist and label services agency. He said the deals had the potential to put HYBE in the same league as the “big three” major record labels: Sony(SNE), Universal and Warner Music.

Meanwhile, Kakao has aggressively diversified from its beginnings as being the number one messaging app to a conglomerate media company.

Meanwhile, away from Korea and kpop, but still relevant, I think, Disney announced a restructuring that will layoff 7000 jobs and cut 5.5 billion. Like Netflix, it suffered large losses in its streaming operations. Its full integration with Hulu, of which it is the majority owner, is now in doubt, and there is some talk that it will sell Hulu to Comcast. I wonder what that will do to its kdrama initiative, which it launched with such fanfare in 2021, and which it reaffirmed in late 2022 but prior to this restructuring and executive Bob Iger's full re-takeover. Non-subscribers (such as me) or U.S. subscribers without a VPN (which is why I'm a non-subscriber) will not necessarily miss it, but it will be telling to see what happens, since Netflix is also engaged in some policy shifts. Will there be a kdrama streaming shakeout?

It is hard to run a "loss leader" business in an industry of all loss leaders. The creation of stream platforms was to capture cable cord cutters as long term subscribers like in the old cable days. But that is not happening. You can throw a lot of money for content (SK had a record year of exporting media content and Studio Dragon announced this week it is producing 35 dramas this year, mostly for foreign markets) but stream viewers are willing to jump from service to service without any long term commitment. It is like herding lizards in the desert.

I read once that certain boom or bust industry business cycles can only maintain their existence on a thin sheet of ice. For example, in the entire history of the commercial airline industry, it has never made a collective profit. In good years, earnings are great; in bad, bankruptcy horrible.

I've been watching it. I don't feel any emotional attachments to anyone, especially not enough to cry over anyone, but I just keep coming back because I want to see the conclusion of the events.

I recognized one of the contestants from his variety appearances and I wondered how he would do. I think I saw 3 or 4 contestants who had been masters on the variety show Master in the House.

I was having a nice Friday evening, then I
basically face-planted on the pavement while outside..now I'm bruised in the body and spirit, and disappointed there was no handsome male lead to save me from my fall, or tend to my injuries 😔

I’ve done the same thing TWICE in the past year, the second time requiring a trip to the ER to stitch up a busted lip. In both cases, the dramatic Technicolor eye effect faded in a few days.

No swoony guys to catch me before I hit the ground, but in the first instance, a really nice fella saw me sprawled on the ground and kindly gave me a ride home. Does that count?

Both times I was out taking an evening walk and tripped in the dark over the uneven sidewalk. I finally got myself a headlamp, which has probably saved me from even more falls.

Oh gosh, that’s terrible. Have you reported the uneven paving as that is not funny? Thank goodness you didn’t get even more injured. If you fell others will too and it sounds like we need to do the Gaus electronics, When the weather is fine and The producers style campaign to ensure the street lighting is sorted.

Reply1988, thanks for your concern!

Property owners in my small town are required to make repairs if the sidewalk doesn’t meet certain safety standards. I tripped over a section that was sticking up only a fraction of an inch... Sometimes that’s all it takes.

Street lighting here is pretty good, but there are patches of sidewalk where the trees block out the lights. On top of that, my night vision is really awful. I blame myself for not taking the common-sense precaution of bringing a light, or taking my walks during the day.

Required fields are marked *

Oh no! That sounds really bad :(
I tripped on uneven ground too, actually! It was on the side of the road, so not a sidewalk, in your case they should probably get that fixed before more people get hurt ><
The headlight is a great idea though!

And yes, a nice person helping out definitely counts!! ^^
I had a man in his car check on me too (after witnessing my not so gracious fall xD), that was nice. But I was fine enough, after all, just picked myself up and walked home (in disbelief lol).

Let's try to not repeat the experience! <3

Regarding OST songs, I would only recognize ones from Secret Garden and My Love From the Star, and I have no idea who the singers are. Most OST songs sound interchangeable and meh to me, so I don't pay them much attention and certainly dont spend any time reading the translations (as I said last Friday). But it occurs to me that maybe other Beanies are really into them and even recognize the singers. Are the singers known celebrities? And are the songs famous as well? Just curious if I'm missing something here.
Happy Friday everyone.

I don't know much, but I know that when a song becomes famous it never disappears.
I've heard that songs from I know Coffee Prince, Our Beloved Summer, Be Melo, Itaewon, etc are played in certain seasons or events. I mean, to still play every summer a song from 2007...😳
And even in recent shows sometimes you can hear a song from other drama in the back (especially in a coffee shop, bar or restaurant scene), or in variety shows (Master in the House's PD is obsessed with Our Beloved Summer OTS. 😆 I can't blame them tho).

The artists... I think you can get everything. From an old indie band to a rookie kpop group. You can get big or small stars. Sometimes even actors with zero musical experience make a song for the OST of their drama.
I also know that sometimes artists ask their friends to make a song for their drama.

Oh, and some artists are known for making great OSTs. I'm not sure, but I think Ailee has the title of "queen of OTS'".

But I don't think you're missing something. It's normal to not know the artist if you're not interested in their music.
Well, I'm like that. I never recognize any of the artists my friends like even if they're famous. 🤷‍♀️

As I was writing this, I thought the only thing I can think of was maybe a song that had an 🎶ooh woo woo🎶 type theme but I'm not even sure. It reminds me of a breezy type sound.

I loved 10cm before I loved BTS and before Yoon Cheol-jong left and it was just Kwon Jung-yeol. You made my evening!

“I don't know much, but I know that when a song becomes famous it never disappears.” And it seems like the whole country knows the lyrics or most of them, and if there are any dance moves to a song, everybody seems to know those too and are so good at dancing along.

I don't really notice the OSTs either haha but I do think there famous singers who become go tos because they tend to sing catchy or memorable songs. The songs can also become famous or iconic, for example (I don't know the name of the song or melody) but the music (or at least the theme when people strut in a line) from Boys over Flowers is still used nowadays.

I was surprised how involved the singers are in the OST/drama process. I've seen something where it was said the singer reads the script(s) in order to perform the song. The only OST songs that I liked enough to actually listen to the whole thing available on youtube was Gu Family Book and for that obviously Suzy & Lee Seung Gi would know the general story (since they were the stars) but since they sang the songs, they had to know how the story would end.

For The Woman song from the drama Secret Garden, the singer also mentioned how attached she felt to the character after reading the script which I guess informed how she sang the song.

I love k-OSTS. Honestly it's been years since I've stopped to follow kpop all that much expect of few artists I seriously like, but I regularly save songs from drama in my playlist. Sometimes even when I didn't watch drama itself and just found it randomly)))

Certain singers pretty much do OSTs for living, so it's easy to remember them because they're literally everywhere lol. Main problem here is that SK has a specific taste in ballads I couldn't get behind even if I got lobotomy, so many HUGE hit OSTs of that genre annoy me terribly. And when such track is played like 5-6 time per episode... There is a difference between ear-worm and ear-parasite!

Have any beanies watched What’s Love Got To Do With It? I have a lot of thoughts about the film but a particular point that hit home to me was about pretence. I’m especially curious about beanies who come from cultures where arranged marriages are still a large part of society. I will say a controversial opinion that the 6% divorce rate is bullshit. I think a healthy divorce rate in society is good, humans make mistakes whether it be from arranged or love marriages

Give "Strangers Again" Kdrama a try. It explores marriage and divorces to an extent, but in general marriage is a work where you pretend to like it because it gives you stability in society.

Required fields are marked *

Haha I am or was watching Strangers Again. Just FF now. My previous name was Timelate but since my username for db is linarrick I thought switching back would be easier for beanies to @me

But I agree I think Strangers Again is a great example. Eun-beom and Ha-ra were a love marriage it didn’t work out because they (Andrew particularly he) couldn’t communicate and Eun-beom realised married life wasn’t for him (which is perfectly fine and I agree, just didn’t like how he ended things with Ha-ra and can’t see them ever getting back together after such an hurtful lie)

But then we have Jae-gyeom, who yes Ha-ra doesn’t love but IS attracted to. Look the drama made them look as they if had issues but after their first fight they talked honestly about their feelings. They were compatible. And the way they ended things was so beautiful and a wonderful and mature way to end a real relationship the EXACT opposite of what happened between Eun-beam & Ha-ra

Maybe it’s because I’m a Desi but growing up in between these two ‘versions’ of marriage I guess I don’t believe in either. I’ve had romantic feelings for people who were very bad for me but nor do I want an arranged marriage. Sorry not sorry but parents should stay the hell away from my (possible) marriage

So I guess I’m left with compatibility, the way earlier Ha-ra & Jae-gyeom were together. I don’t want butterfly feelings because I don’t trust it . As for Jae-gyeom & Ha-ra she was with someone who was honest and respected her. Maybe I guess that’s what I want? And why I attached so hard to their relationship

Once again I'm going to be lost in the shuffle but I had to get this out. I'm feeling a skotch offended by how often I see "western entertainment is trash and its influence is kdramas".

Now, I'm not a scholar of different media and I can't give an analysis about why things are good or bad. I just like what I like and I'm drawn to what I'm drawn to.
I really can't even remember why I got into kdramas. I think it was at least in part because of the types of shows featured aren't things seen in American shows; for instance the fantasy dramas or the slow burn build up. I'm sure there are American shows that have slow build ups but I'm blanking on them and they're often shown in a different way compared to Korean shows especially since American shows (used to at least) have years to build relationships vs Kdramas that go from point A to B in a matter of months.
I haven't watched many American shows lately in part because I'm trying to learn Korean so watching Korean content is more convenient but also shows get cancelled alot so it's harder to get invested when you're half waiting for the rug to be pulled from beneath you. Plus there's SOOOOO many options nowadays, it's hard to find things to watch because it's often formulaic and not as engaging. There's less character driven shows and more what will be memeable or profitable.

When I first watched Kdramas, way back when, I watched shows like Secret Garden, Coffee Prince, W: Two Worlds, and Boys over Flowers. Back then and even now, I do not understand why BOF was as iconic as it was haha I think every drama fan has at least seen that drama. Anywho, those types of shows don't exist here so it was interesting. I fell out of kdrama watching because at some point it just all felt so repetitive. The same tropes, the same character types and even worse was the tropes and characters ALWAYS involved a woman/girl being mistreated, not only by others but by the male lead, and yet she falls madly in love with him. She doesn't have much going for her once they get together because now she's content just being in his life. Nothing was particular distinctive to me.

Squid Game is what brought me back to Kdramas and then I learned how much Kdramas had changed. The women were stronger and more assertive. Fights looked way more realistic. Relationships seemed more complex and argubly more realistic. Of course, if you watch long enough, you notice the tropes all over again but overall, it was interesting to me to see the modern version of Kdramas. It seemed, to me, an accurate reflection of changing times.

Korean entertainment sells sex and yet they also act like it doesn't exist. Like the only people who engage in it are married couples. Same with any other "bad thing" that is supposedly Western influence seeping into Korean dramas. Koreans do these things too but get shamed and peer pressured into conforming and then it's dismissed as if it never happened. An...

...example is the female lead from Nevertheless. She smoked, had tattoos, and swears but she had to change in order to just get cast and accepted by general audiences. Didn't matter if she was talented or hardworking, just that she didn't fit the "traditional" criteria.

I've seen people complain about violence and again, people way more articulate than me can and have made videos about violence in media but violence is also realistic. Not only that but sometimes it feels like a vicarious catharsis when you see someone who never gets punished get punched in the face.

It's kinda like when people say "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all". Yeah, that's the nice thing to do but people have negative feelings and sometimes it's better to get them out rather than let them fester inside and come out in some other harmful way. Plus sometimes it can lead to needed conversations.

Oh, I probably went on a rambling tangent. Sorry.
My point is not ALL western media is trash and western influence doesn't necessarily mean the downfall of korean dramas.

I just realized I didn't give any reasons why western shows weren't all trash haha
It's because I haven't watched any shows lately. When I watch Western shows nowadays, I often watch cartoons /animation.
Some shows I've liked are The Equalizer and Leverage. I should really get into Abbott Elementary. From the clips I've seen, that's a good show too.

Ted Lasso
Superstore
The Peripheral
The Expanse
Avenue 5
The Amazing Mrs Maisel
Stranger Things

I haven't seen it yet but Severance is also supposed to be really good.

Breaking Bad was also a good show. This Is Us was another good one.
Part of the reason those shows were good is because the creators had clearly defined ideas, timelines, and outcomes for their stories.
They weren't swayed by what fans or studios wanted, only the stories they set out to tell.

With Breaking Bad, the backlash against the wife character was totally unexpected especially considering how the husband was genuinely ruining and theatening their family's life but the creator (and her actress) weren't intimidated to change anything. In fact, some of the hateful criticism of her was included as dialogue in the show during the final episodes.

1

Oh yes, if we're going back in time further, then Breaking Bad was wonderful television. So was The Wire, which is possibly the best American TV show ever made.
