Does searching everyhwere include reading this page? Because I can assure you that all the information about this issue available on the planet is on this page somewhere. (There’s other information elsewhere, but if it differs from what you find here, it’s wrong).

Very brief summary: Mac or Linux: forget it (unless you host a virtual Windows environment) On Windows, three possibilties. 1) Open in HWP viewer, cut and paste to other application. (Won’t work on some setups). 2) Open in HWP viewer, “print” to a text file using the Windows plain text dummy printer, or to a pdf -generating pseudo-printer 3) Get the Namo web editor (free for 30-day trial), load into that, save as html, then load into Word or whatever. All the details of all these methods are up above you on this page.

And I agree with the last statement of Gramps, TV stations’ policy amazes me sometimes. They, it seems, lost their perspective. TV is for the viewers, right, how to keep a faithful viewer? By giving them a few goodies, like scripts, i.e. For those learning Korean (myself included) it is a great help, and TV station looses nothing by publishing it freely.

Hi. I don’t know if anyone has asked this question before but I have a MacBook and Apple computers have automatic Asian Language readers but when I opened the txts for Coffee Prince, in all the suggested ways above, it still wouldn’t work. I get weird black diamonds with question marks on them.

I have iArchiver to open the rar files and extracted, that’s when the files open and weird symbols come out.

No one’s likely to answer that one AGAIN. Everything you need is above. Including the fact that unless you have access to a Windows machine you are out of luck. Admittedly, the recent splitting up these comments into pages while restarting the numbering from 1 on each page makes all the various cross-reference by comment number after the first page invalid, but all the info you need is still there, multiple times.

Those four scripts are indeed missing. The chances of them turning up now are slim

@shamy — No-one’s going to send you anything. You go to the link at the top and fetch the .rar archive file yourself. All the contents are in hwp format, so unless you have Windows it may not be worth bothering.

I was surprised to find that you’re right: no-one seems to have ever “liberated” the scripts for the drama from SBS’s jail and posted them anywhere, which is odd, because most of the scripts that get put on line in any form at all generally become freely accessible sooner or later. Of course, searching for the drama script is hard in this case, because the movie screenplay is indeed available on several sites, and so it keeps coming up in search results.

If you have an SBS login and “Munwha cash” account, you can visit the drama scripts in the SBS jail, and peer at them through the bars for one hour only after paying 200 Won per script (via the blue “대본” buttons) at

2: I’ve been trying for 3 hours (now it’s 00:34 here) and now i’m tired.
3: It doesnt work ! Im almost crying T_T I don’t know why it doesn’t work for me. I’ve downloaded everything and followed what you said, but… the computer keeps saying that he can’t read the doc. And with hangul viewer it’s ok but i can’t do anything with the document (cut/paste …)
So, if anyone can just help me… if you can’t, that’s ok, i’ll stay frustrated …. Maybe i’ve understand well, because i’m french and google translation is limited…

I’m afraid just saying “it doesn’t work” tells us nothing useful. There is no one “it” here. Things can go wrong at all stages of the process and “not working” can take many forms.

I’ll try to state the basics yet again

1. First, you have to get the script files to the point where you can (try to) open them. Most of the scripts are packed into either zip or rar archives. Zips or rars stemming from Korean sites often won’t open with winzip; and some of them won’t open with winrar on a machine that wasn’t installed for use in Korea. The program that handles such troublesome zips best on non-Korean machines is 7-zip. I won’t repeat here how to get it.

2 Once you have unarchived the files, you have to sort out what kind they are and handle them accordingly

2A If they are of type *txt, they may be either in Korean Windows encoding (nearly all of those from Korean sources are) or in Unicode (which they really all ought to be, but good luck trying to persuade Koreans of that). Unicode files will open and be readable on any modern computer so there’s no further issue

2B Any txt files in Korean Windows encoding will initially load into the default programs that handle *txt files (e.g. by double clicking on the file icon) but the text they contain will be unreadable on any non-Korean machines (including those that merely have “Korean language support”) To read them you need to open them by loading them explicitly into a program that can read Korean encoding and convert it internally to Unicode for saving. That includes all modern Web
browsers, and most modern word processing software, including MS Word and Open Office writer. Once you’ve loaded them into such a program then saved them as Unicode, you will have text files any suitable app can handle.

2C Files of type *hwp will open only either in the HWP word processor from Hancom, formerly known as Haansoft, or in the same company’s Hangeul 2007 Viewer. The Hangeul viewer will in some cases allow you to cut and paste text, a screenful at a time, from the viewer screen and into another application, from where you can save it. But if you try that and it doesn’t work in your particular Windows setup, you can’t hope to use that method of making the scripts editable unless you know has a very deep knowledge of the Windows clipboard in its many and various configurations. What the viewer will allow you to do is make paper hard copies of the scripts on your printer, but you’ll need a lot of paper… There are methods of fooling the viewer into writing to a file which it thinks is a printer, but I’m afraid if you can’t follow the instructions I and others have already given for doing that, there’s no way they can be put more simply, because the procedure itself isn’t simple.

Now you say that the computer “won’t open”: the documents but you can indeed read them in the Hangeul 2007 viewer. But that , for reasons explained many times in the comments above, is as far as some people can get with those files that are in *hwp format without getting the full HWP word processing software, which is expensive. But if you know someone associated with a college or business that deals with Korea, they will have access to an HWP installation (because without HWP you can’t handle many any of the documents Korean companies, schools or government bodies put out) and they might be willing to load files for you and resave them in Unicode text. Another possibility that works with some of the (mainly older) *hwp files is to get a copy of Namo Web Editor, which can both read and save some versions HWP documents. Once again, I’ve explained how to do that before and won’t repeat myself here.

Andante’s discovery that the HWP viewer will run under Wine on Linux and OS X is welcome, not only because it gives Mac and Linux users the chance to at least read the hwp files as Windows users can, but because running under Wine means that, for those who understand how Wine works and can read and modify the relevant parts of its source code, it would be possible to access the underlying text buffer and dump it to a file. However, that would involve extreme nerdiness, and I don’t propose to even hint at how to do it here. The XWindow or Mac Finder clipboard should also allow cut and paste, though I haven’t tried it with this app myself.I would also advise any Mac or Linux users with no previous experience of Wine and who don’t already have it up and running on their machines to locate someone who can help install and use it. The Wine documentation is of the type that’s excellent when you already know what to do, but baffling if you don’t.
