The joining-up technique for naver isn’t very obvious, but it is actually straightforward enough once you grasp what the (rather unusual) stages are, and it will indeed let you locate some scripts the copyright cops haven’t yet found and splatted.

It’s made even more difficult because they keep changing the text labels and the graphics icons for the different options and their position on the page, so I’ll just outline it in general terms.

I guess you can read and type Korean, so that shouldn’t be a problem. I wouldn’t really advise anyone who can’t to try this without someone well versed in Korean actually at their elbow to help out.

After locating the “register” link on the main naver home page (its label varies, but it’s always adjacent to the login box) you get the first of a sequence of joining up pages. The first stage is to select a username which isn’t taken (the web page will complain if it is and tell you to pick another) then select and confirm a password.

So far, pretty normal. But now, you have to jump the id verification hurdle. Unlike some other Korean sites, they don’t require people overseas to fax their passports or similar. In fact Naver offers only one form of ID verification for non-Korean nationals resident outside Korea: by text message. You select the icon for the Non-Korean overseas resident category (generally it’s a globe, last time I looked it was at the extreme right of the row of verification method options). That brings up a new screen in which you have to type your cellphone number (with the full international dialling code, of course, though the screen offers a cheat sheet of such country codes for anyone who can’t recall theirs) You make sure your cellphone is switched on and has a good signal, then click confirm and wait for a text message, which, surprisingly enough, usually does come within a few minutes. This message contains a code number, which you need to write down VERY carefully.

You are next required to log in to Naver with the user name and password you set earlier, which produces a screen telling you to type in the code you were texted. Once you’ve correctly done that, you are through to the next stage of registration.

You’re not out of the woods yet, though there’s nothing in the remaining screens you still have to fill in that isn’t pretty familiar from other sites. One thing it’s maybe worth knowing is that, in the usual “select a question and supply an answer” part, if you go to the bottom of the list of pre prepared “what is your hometown / pet’s name /” etc sort of question, you’ll get an option to input your own “ID proving” question as well as, of course, the answer. I guess this option ought to accept questions and answers in Latin script (though the preprovided questions are of course all in Hangeul)

Once you’ve completed the inquisition form, you are fully registered with a Naver id. (Among other things, this will let you save your own word and phrase lists on the dictionaries page, which is pretty handy)

But you still have to register individually for most of the cafes. Sometimes this is as simple as just clicking a link, but other cafes expect you to introduce yourself with a mini-bio, and some have rules about the “standing” you need to be able to view or do various things. For others you have to PM the cafe owner. So here again, a reasonable knowledge of Korean is more or less a must.

On your specific query re kiddies shows, I’m afraid I don’t have any suggestions. What I can say is that various published DVDs of kiddy shows I’ve sampled myself have neither Korean subs nor close captions. And as I’ve remarked in earlier Gramps-grump comments here, increasingly the adult drama DVD and Blu-ray releases don’t have Korean subs either, even when they have English, or allegedly English ones.

Sadly, this is part of a pattern whereby, over the years since JB first set up this page to the delight and edification of so many of us, provision of scripts on-line by the stations themselves has become the rare exception rather than the norm it used to be. Very few of the big-time dramas now post the scripts officially, citing requests from the rights holders not to do so. I find this both sad and stupid, but copyright owners seem to be incurably irrational and determined to damage their own interests as well as of those of us who just want to learn, and/or teach, more Korean. Most of the scripts that still emerge are bootlegs, either leaked from within the production teams or even transcribed from the soundtracks by dedicated fans. Any that are on pages the search engines routinely index are liable to be taken down without warning, so by definition they are hard to find because those who post them deliberately make them so. And for what I hope are obvious reasons, those who do find them, either by serendipity or inside information, feel they can’t expose their existence on a site like this.

So I think a Golden Age for lovers of the Korean language in its TV drama guise has passed. But it was great while it lasted, and those of us who reaped its benefits are eternally grateful to javabeans for what she did for us, and Korea, by giving us this page.

Does anyone have a copy of the script for 여인의 향기? I was able to download it from 20woo, but my computer crashed and I wasn’t able to save a backup of the scripts I recently downloaded. I can only find a few episodes’ script online.

Not much use asking about the dead links. That’s all history now, thanks to the fallout from the the megaupload debacle. Even though there are still filelockers available where the scripts could in theory be re-posted, no-one could be expected to upload all those items again from their local storage, only to find they have been wiped out within a day or two.

For a very long time, dramabeans herself hasn’t maintained this page, or as far as I can see either looked at any of the comments or responded to emails about scripts, so it’s become a dead letter and it will probably soon disappear altogether unless there’s another change in the filelocker scene.

However, one door shuts, and another opens. Take a look at the revamped SBS VOD portal vod.sbs.co.kr. Though at first glance it seems a run-of-the-mill pay-by-view site, there’s a slightly hidden extra that’s open to all, without login or payment.

For a number of more recent SBS dramas on that site, you can access captions with all the Korean dialogue.

Captions aren’t the same as scripts, of course. The scripts (대본) that used to be available via this page, and those that are still on offer for a very limited number of dramas on the SBS site, were the full free-standing scenarios, with stage directions and speaker labels as well as the actual dialogue. They could be read as free-standing items in their own right, like a book, without needing to see the video to follow them.

Captions (지막) by contrast, consist of nothing but what is actually said on screen, no more no less. Without access to the video, they make no sense. But for language learners who can get access to the videos one way or another (including the legal way of joining up at the SBS site and paying…) they can be even more valuable than scripts, because you get to read exactly what is being said, unlike the scripts, which reflect what the writer wrote before it (quite often) got changed in performance.

To see the captions, go the portal url, select TV from the top menu, then use the navigation system to get to the drama you’re interested in. Select that drama, scroll down to the episode you want, and click the link for that episode. This opens up a LQ video viewing window (in which you can watch the first three minutes for free if you like) and to the right of that window, there’s a dark-brownish-gray area with two tabs at the top. It opens at the default tab, containing an episode synopsis, but what you want is the other tab, labelled 지막보기.

For some dramas, including all those more than a couple of years old, all you’ll see when you do that is an apologetic 해당 영상은 자막이 제공 되지 않습니다 meaning “For this item captions are not available.” But for many more recent ones, including some currently screening, the window will reveal the entire dialogue of the episode.

If you get the “hard luck, mate” message on the first episode of a drama you’re interested in, it’s still worth trying each episode in turn. In the case of Shining Inheritance, for instance, there are captions for the last two episodes only. But that’s better than nothing. (Though Shining Inheritance is one of the dramas where you can access the full scripts via the 대본 buttons after logging in and paying.)

But the real goldmine is for dramas like 49 Days, where the scripts were embargoed on the official site (as nearly all scripts now are), so there’s no 대본 button, but all the dialogue of all but 2 of 20 episodes is freely available via the Captions facility (the missing captions are for eps 3 and 11). The Scent of a Woman is another drama people have been asking about here recently where the captions are on the SBS VOD site, even though the actual script was embargoed. You’ll also find the entire dialogue of Tree with Deep Roots if you want to tune up your saeguk-speak skills, along with a good number of other dramas.

The same site also makes available, for a very small proportion of the dramas, full scripts, but to these are viewable only under the stingy conditions SBS has always imposed whereby 200 Won buys you access to the script for one hour only in a window that tries to stop you copying it or even cutting and pasting words into an on-line dictionary. For dramas that offer the full scripts on these terms, there’s a button marked 대본 alongside those for the streams/downloads in various resolutions. But that’s NOT where you find the captions I’m talking about here.

To repeat what I said and you apparently haven’t realized. You don’t get the full script. You get captions intended for the hearing impaired. No stage directions, no character speech labels, no notation of things like on-screen notices that are legible to viewers and so don’t require captions for the hearing impaired, but do need subtitling.

There’s another way in which these captions are considerably less than “full scripts” Lots of words are randomly missing. In some dramas there are one or two missing words in nearly every line. I can’t see any pattern in this (it’s not that the first or last words get chopped off, for example). I think it must just be careless transcription. And the fact that entire episodes, again apparently at random, are not captioned at all looks like carelessness, too.

So yes, they are hugely better than nothing, and excellent for subbers. But scripts they are not, and are pretty useless for people who want to read the drama rather than watch it with a linguistic cheat-sheet. And because of the frequent missing words they would be a riddle to people trying to learn the language. Those benefits went with the disappearance of the true scripts.
