Hi, Beanies. Do you guys have a song you hate, or whose lyrics you find problematic but can’t help singing along to for whatever reason? Either because it’s catchy or your workplace played it so much it’s stuck in your head?
Mine is I’d rather go blind by Etta James. I know the lyrics to the entire song but I don’t agree with them. I would not want to go blind just so I don’t see someone walking away. It doesn’t make sense to me, yet every time it comes on I can’t help but sing along to it. A South African singer by the name of Vusi Nova put some pizzaz on it and made it dancey which made it catchy and there I was dancing to it like an idiot. Beyonce beyoncéd it and I crooned along with her.
What is wrong with me?? So dear beanies, please make me feel normal(or let’s just be crazy together) and share similar songs/stories.
There’s a Spanish song I loved when I was in my twenties it is called “Fueron los celos” (something like “it was because of jealousy”), I found it so romantic… so a couple of months ago I found the cd and decided to listen to it in my car. To my astonishment the story was about a pathetic man that asks her girlfriend to forgive him because whatever he did (shout at her, hit her, or just embarrassed her, it’s not said in the song) was because he was jealous and he’s only guilty of love… I remember I was in my car and I stared at the CD player saying… did I really like this song? Have I ever listened to it? Do you realize this is about abuse? And even worse, that it romantises it?
And even so, I was singing…
So I hated the song Stand By Your Man long before Pretty Noona caused my hypertension with its repetitive and inappropriate use of it. The song is awful. It’s basically saying that women only get one man in their life so no matter what he does they need to stay with him. Basically, her love needs to be unconditional, while his doesn’t.
It’s truly a terrible song.

Hmm… I repulse any songs with swear words, talk of sex/alcohol/drugs in them and I hate them even more when they’re catchy.

I agree. This song on its own is bad enough and I hate how they made it Pretty Noona’s “theme song”.
