Music March! Second-to-last-day! I’ll finally participate!

A trip down nostalgia lane today led to me discovering that Amuro Namie retired in 2018 and I think you could hear my heart break in two.

I’ve been listening to both K-pop and J-pop for a long time (since I was in 5th grade circa 2007), but through middle school and high school I was actually much more into J-pop. I have been out of the loop with J-pop for years now, but female vocal powerhouses like Amuro Namie, ayaka, Utada Hikaru, and Hamasaki Ayumi basically shaped my teenage years. I was never one to fawn over boy groups. Instead, I loved and admired the queens.

If you want quality Japanese R&B and hip-hop, look no further than Amuro Namie. Her rich, deep, velvety smooth voice is incomparable. Sadly, most of her songs are not available in full on YouTube, but she HER ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY ON SPOTIFY, so go check her out! I remember some of my favorites being “Baby Don’t Cry”, “Get Myself Back”, “WILD”, “Contrail”, “Violet Sauce”, and, among her 90s stuff, “Sweet 19 Blues”.

“Love Story” is the only full music video I can find on YouTube (as for some reason she does the same thing that so many J-pop artists do where they only put 1 minute clips from their music videos on YouTube. It’s 2020, Japan. Please.) and it’s a great representation of her R&B ballad style (although I prefer ‘Baby Don’t Cry’).

Love you, Namie!

Excuse me while I go re-listen to her entire discography.
