I think The King is a very smart concept, better than Goblin (which I didn’t like much or any KES show) but the execution is severely lacking and the romance not needed atleast for now. There are many possibilities and theories and that is why I’m still watching it but it’s… slow, quite slow. Assuming the amount of outcomes that can come out of the story, the story isn’t progressing at a good speed, which either means the left over episodes will be rushed or we never see those possibilities come true because the writer never intended them in the first place.
It really takes skill to end Ep. 8 on such a high note, completely break the momentum starting Ep. 9, and slowly, gradually reveal a few details (that many have already guessed) until we end with a stare-off and more questions.
Oh gosh I completely forgot that we ended ep 8 on such a high note when ep 9 started, and then they brought that scene back and it was totally disjointed. And then whenever they are having a romantic moment it comes out of nowhere too and after a few lovey dovey cheesy lines, they go “here’s sth important we need to discuss”, yes you could definitely discuss that without any romance to begin with. Them leaving us on questions is only why I’m staying. The cliffhangers are good but that’s it for now.
I couldn’t forget because I spent all week hoping Shin-jae would join the gang. Seeing him refuse to listen to anyone and just drown his sorrows in drinking did not help. *sobs*. Seriously, I’m only staying for him and WDH, who had too little screen time.
As for the story, I’m starting to think there really isn’t much to it, but the writer has made it a convoluted mess and the director is feeding it to us in disjointed pieces. Instead of telling the story outright they are letting us unravel the tangled strings as we go until we reach the climax, whatever that may be. This may be an intellectually stimulating drama for some viewers, but I need a story, not just puzzles.
That is so but even the story isn’t moving that fast. So I won’t credit both the directing and writing. The plot is quite interesting, it could be so good but it’s difficult to maintain the viewers interest throughout the episode. Plus the PPL galore lol, I eye rolled several times.

PPL is awful 🙁 It’s turning me off instead of pulling me in.
Plot is genuinely interesting, though.
