New podcast time! Trying something a little different this time: rather than discussing a specific drama, we’re tackling the issue of MEN BEHAVING BADLY on-screen or off in K-ent.

Description:
Anisa (@laica) discusses instances of private and workplace harassment in Korean Entertainment with ODESSA JONES and our own beloved POGO (@pogo1), and they unpack the public’s reaction to the rise of the #metoo movement in South Korea. They also talk about toxic tropes, why we love to watch them play out, and how storytelling is changing in recent years. (The final segment has some really great recs for anyone looking for swoony heroes without jerk-syndrome!)

.

Somebody called me thought they wouldn’t have anything to add and decided to just audit. Of course, that same somebody was typing IMs furiously throughout.

I don’t have the time to listen to the full thing, but I happened to skip to the part where it was mentioned that Seo In-gook has never played a role where he’s mean to women and just—yes! Yes! When actors choose characters like that, it makes them so much more attractive in my eyes.

Oddly, despite the fact that I love SIG to death, none of his characters are in my top 5 male leads. But I do love them and appreciate that he chooses the roles he does. I despise the stereotypical jerk male lead. I really hate it. I’m so glad that that’s changing! I can’t handle most older (pre-2010 or so) dramas because the jerk male lead was so prominent, except for in gems like Dal-ja’s Spring (Spare Tire!) and Coffee Prince (okay, CP needs a refresher in my mind because it’s been years since I saw it, but Han-gyul was awesome, right? It’s not my faulty memory? I hope it’s not!)

I loved the friends to lover story in Fight My Way. Such a sweet hero.
Healer had a wonderful romance line too. So lucky to have recently got to watch this for the first time.
Se Hee was a joy I thought in Because This Is My First Life.
And of course My Ahjussi’ s Dong Hoon. And Ji An was such a great heroine. From what I hear I am so thankful that this was the one available to me and Pretty Noona got picked up by Netflix, lol. This and Healer…..i couldn’t stop thinking about them when finished.
Oh, and of course Dr. Ye.
