I’m dropping Are You Human. Was looking forward to this but I’m finding it shallow, with broad strokes used for characters and rushed plotting. I’ve seen this show before, robot notwithstanding
Aw shame, I was planning to binge it this weekend and catch up.
I have been reading negative comments about the female lead though. I’m not sure her role is essential to the story … we’ll see I guess.
I really dislike her. I know what they’re going for but I find the characterisation slapdash, which is really unusual for a kdrama. The fact is, I started watching Episode 4 (7-8) and I wandered away and realised I wasn’t even watching it anymore. I was that bored.
The show is basically the standard ‘corporation as saeguk royal family’ thing with the overbearing King, the scheming Prime Minister, the arranged marriage, the spoiled Princess and the impoverished female lead interloper caught up in their schemes. The robot almost seems incidental as though it’s their ‘hook’ for making the same show they always make.
It does not help that season 3 of the far-superior Humans has started in the UK and it’s actually exploring the themes this show is glossing over.
Also I know everyone is raving about Seo Kang-joon’s performance but to me it’s all over the place (although a lot of that may be the writing). They’ve also given him this infuriating tic of winking when he’s being a human lie detector, which just comes off as stupid.
I watched last week’s episodes enthusiastically and enjoyed them, but I haven’t started this week’s, the motivation just isn’t there despite the fact that I had nothing to do today. :/ And it really does seem like it will be the typical chaebol storyline with an evil dude who wants to take over the company, but with a robot as the hero. I don’t think I’m officially dropping it yet, partially because I do appreciate the attractive men who do seem to be pulling their acting weight as opposed to the female lead, but I’m not jumping to watch each new episode, so that says a lot.
I don’t think it would be near as good as The Princess Man, given their target audience. I will category this drama as trendy. But I don’t think it’s shallow yet. This drama has a core and has a story to tell.. And the pacing is always moving and we always discover something new information. I admit, if it’s another writers, I will lose hope and drop right away. I just trust the writers because She is start to dig deep behind the surface, particularly with Nam Shin Character, though I won’t expect something wonderful. But that’s okay though if you don’t enjoy it, and hope you will find something better to watch .
