Legend of Fuyao Week 6 and 7 have been pretty exciting as we finally get some answers about Fuyao’s origins before rushing towards the climax. I know there’s still a lot of agony ahead for our OTP but I’m hopeful for a sweet outcome.

I’m trying to just go with the flow without spending too much time making GIFs. And yet Vengo Gao’s “emotions” from Ep. 49 cannot be denied. He looks like he’s trying to dislodge a booger without touching his nose. My childhood cat made a similar expression after encountering another cat’s musk.

I’d love to hear from Beanies still following Fuyao (including @linda-palapala, @giocare, @ally-le, @ultramafic, @jozie, @trina, @asianromance, @kimbapnoona, @trinpie, @giegie0384, @belladonna):

1) What drove you crazy (with delight or frustration) from the most recent batch of episodes?

2) Are you diving into spoilery Twitter and YouTube?

3) Who’s the best couple? (Including bromances!)

🙈 This particular scene of his was painful to watch 😂 He’s seriously ruining my love for Legolas-like Dojin!

    1. Thankfully less cray cray this week but WuJi’s mother frustrated me. Why is she and Prince De are so selfish? Why are they acting like they did nothing wrong? I felt bad for the emperor but I didn’t like what he did to WuJi’s mother, FuYao and WuJi, although I totally understand his actions.

    2. Twitter is my go-to when I need spoilers more than youtube. I liked what I saw last night. ^^

    3. FuYao & WuJi of course! I love them, and WuYi is dethroning YeHua as my favorite C-drama male character. ^^
    Pretty Doc & WuJi. <3

Do you think it’s Ethan Ruan’s acting that seals the deal? I don’t know who YeHua is, so I can’t compare. But between them, the chemistry, he’s killing it, and I guess the directing. Did you read the twitter article of his interview where he said at one point it was so intense toward the end that he fainted? And she was so exhausted she just stayed there on her knees after the scene.

YeHua is the male lead character in the drama Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (Yang-mi’s previous drama), and is played by Mark Chao. I don’t think it’s the acting because both Mark Chao & Ethan Ruan are excellent actors. Mark had an explosive chemistry with Yang-mi as well. It’s just that WuJi is playful and has more personality (and Ethan is doing a great job portraying him) than stoic YeHua, who shows less to no emotion, but Mark has a really expressive eyes. He can act using his eyes alone. He’s perfect as YeHua. It’s just that I’m so inlove with the drama right now so currently it’s WuJi. I’m quite it will change back to YeHua once I rewatch Peach Blossoms.

I think that’s the rain scene, he fainted four? times iirc.

I’ve heard so much about Ten Miles but it seems I tried long ago to watch but couldn’t get into it. I’ve heard other fans say LoF has replaced Ten Miles as their favorite. I wouldn’t be able to even try until I’m well over LoF! The fact that Mark has expressive eyes is very intriguing, that’s such an important aspect of acting.
Yes, it’s Wuji’s playfulness and charm and Ethan’s ability to carry it off that’s the “hook, line and sinker” for me.

Ten Miles is very addictive! Yang-mi’s character in FuYao is better than her character in Peach though. Story-wise, I like Peach more than FuYao. Ethan is a passionate actor whereas Mark is subtle, at least as YeHua.

I usually go for passionate instead of subtle. Scorpios are known to be too passionate anyway, and both my daughter and I are Scorpios. As long as we’re on the subject, my daughter says why are there so many American actors who are Leos, and I say, why are there so many Asian actors who are Scorpios!

Another nice thing is both Ethan Ruan and my daughter have the same birthday.

Just finished 58. The music at her coronation gave me chills! Everything is so beautiful.
Seems to me Ethan is more than acting, it’s like he’s really into Yang Mi, not just FuYao. Either he’s a fantastic actor, or he was really taken with her.

      2
      2

Maybe it’s a little of both—that is, Ethan Ruan is a deeply emotional actor who loves his characters’ world. Then again, it’s not surprising that actors often crush on their acting partners.

My job as a UX Designer requires empathy but acting as in a romance is a level of vulnerability I wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. 😉

I was watching their bts on youtube the other night and it really look like he’s into her, and Yang-mi is such a bully. She’s always teasing him in their bts. ER posted a photo on his weibo yesterday? with “Yang-mi is my own FuYao” as his caption. ^^

        2

Where can I find that? Seems like I saw something similar that someone tweeted but I didn’t really get it. “Yang-mi is my own FuYao” is so sweet and it seems Yang mi just might be a tad like FuYao in real life. I’ve watched all the bts I can find and there are plenty! I love watching the director telling and showing them exactly what to do.

Oh, and Ethan would look at Yang mi with those puppy-dog looks like he really would follow her anywhere!

WuJi & FuYao scenes this week were all ❤️❤️❤️

Yes, I did see it and it was so sweet!
I was thinking how perfect both of them were for Fuyao and Wuji. If it had been any other actors I might have thought all the love and adoration lines between them were a little too cheesy, but they really brought it.

To be honest, I had to stop watching at 58 until I got my emotions in check. I’ve been so intensely emotionally involved I had to back away (until I knew the ending, ha!) But I also want to go back to about 55 or 56 and re watch before going on. It will be a binge watch weekend. I posted the ep 21 water fight to a friend and she loved it. She won’t watch anything w/o a happy ending so I had to wait but now she’s watching LoF.
    Who’s the best couple? Seriously??

      Who’s the best couple? Seriously??

Ha! I’m looking forward to my weekend binge too.

It never occurred to me that Fuyao/Wuju’s supremacy was in question until I scanned the “overall thoughts” recaps at A Virtual Voyage. Their pleasure from the show has dimmed but I vehemently disagree. Plus, after enduring every single episode of Mr. Right – 恋爱先生 I know what it looks like when a great show really goes off the rails.

I’m gobsmacked at comments from Virtual Voyage. How can their pleasure dim when it just gets more and more intense? Perhaps it is the secondary characters’ stories which I admit I ff thru the first time I watch a drama.

I’ve definitely wondered, “Are we watching the same show?” Still, I’ve found some of their commentary to be fun and they’ve added to my sense of watching this show within a larger community.

It’s been a treat fangirling with other Beanies this round; watching Chinese dramas is usually a solitary experience for me. I’m either months or years behind a show or I just can’t make the time for a hot show that everyone’s talking about! 😄

          2

I’m too sensitive to read any negative comments about Fuyao! It would be too disheartening.
I only just discovered Chinese dramas. For the longest time I pooh-poohed them. But then I discovered Nirvana in Fire 2 (not the original) and I’m on my 5th time watching it, as it’s the kind of show that totally appeals to me. I love the subtlety. It’s going to be the same way Fuyao. Lost Love in Times I’ve only seen 3 times.

I teach piano and my Asian students’ moms (and a dad) are surprised when I tell them I watch kdramas and Chinese dramas! They don’t dare come in as we’ll get sidetracked and talk dramas. “Are you watching this…?” Have you seen that? I had one mom translate a lyric from the song from Wolf that I’d kept seeing “Ni shue” “You are” and I actually heard those words in LoF at the lotus pond when they were kids.
But it’s the greatest treat as you said to fangirl in more depth with you. Glad you set up this thread on your fanwall.

Can you recommend another safe site in the U.S. to watch LoF for my friend? She doesn’t have Viki or DF and I can’t share my account, correct?

I don’t think anything’s stopping you from sharing your Viki or DF login with your U.S.-based friend. Unlike Kocowa which has a 4-device limit for accounts.

Have you seen the actual ending or just heard that it’s happy? One comment said they thought it might be reincarnation. I can’t judge yet but I already told my friend it was a happy ending and she’ll be really mad if it’s some kind of time jump, reincarnation, etc. To her, that’s cheating! I can hardly wait to see the whole last episode.
Question: although the ending will tell us – did you notice the evil spirit is in a hall called “Illusion Palace”? I’m wondering if her trying to kill Wuji is an illusion.

I’m trying so hard to catch up. I came to LoF well after it started, but I think I’m up to episode 39 now. If only there were more hours in the day.
    BTW, I love your GIFs.

There are a few episodes you might ff thru parts if you’re like me. I can’t stand waiting for the Fuyao/Wuji scenes so I ff thru the minor characters first, then go back later to watch those parts. But there are also some episodes that I simply could not stop watching they were so intense.

      1
      1

But I can’t ff. I have a mental block about doing that. That’s like skipping ahead in a book. Just can’t do it.
Are all the episodes really 45 minutes? Sometimes they pass so quickly that I really doubt it.

        1
        1

I have to ff if I’m getting bored. Otherwise I get stuck at the same spot. With some dramas that are completed I’ll skip around and even watch the end, kind of like reading a synopsis and helps me get the general drift of what’s going on. But then I read magazines backwards, read a book ending first, etc.
I admire people like you who are more linear in your thinking!
I subtract the approx 5 minutes of beginning and ending credits/music. That leaves about 40 minutes actual time. Plus if you’re like me and really get into it the time goes by quickly, yeah?

          1
          1

I’ll have all sorts of questions if I skip ahead and will end up having to go back anyway so I might as well just plow straight on through. Sometimes I’ll just do other things while watching boring bits to distract myself.

Question for you Chinese fantasy fans: This is the second fantasy I’ve seen where he gets a lock of her hair so that he can find her if something happens. I’ve tried to look up fantasy tropes but can’t find the significance of the hair thing anywhere. Do any of you know?

    1
    2

      Interesting. It’s new to me.

In Lost Love in Times he has a lock her hair at the end when she ascends and that’s how he finds her when she falls back to earth in her timeline.
Just finished 64 of Fuyao and she gives Ingot a lock of her hair so that Wuji can find her later if she disappears.
This has to be some kind of trope or an element that means something in Asian fantasy. I don’t remember seeing this kind of thing in Western fantasy. Wonder if it’s also done in anime.

Oh, okay. I remember the hair at the end of LLIT. I thought it was their wedding braid. I actually didn’t even ask how he found her—these Chinese dramas are such a marathon, by the end my elbow is permanently pressed on the “I believe” button. ;D

          1
          2

I’ve just been doing some research but couldn’t find anything on “locks of hair”, but I did learn that Chinese fantasy genre is called “Xianxia” not Wuxia.
In Fuyao she gives the lock of her hair to Ingot to give to him so he can find her, but in LLIT you might be correct, it was their wedding braid but had nothing to do with it helping find her, I guess.
If I see this same thing in another Chinese fantasy then I’ll know it must have some meaning. Like maybe in fantasy the hair is still linked with the person and acts like a GPS (ha!)
I did learn how important hair is in Asian philosophy and Taoism (which I know nothing about, so more research to follow). I’m such a beginner knowing next to nothing about Asian culture and literature and needing to learn new things!

By the way, have you seen Wu Xin Monster Killer? I guess that genre has a name too though I don’t know any other series that would be similar. “Xiandai Xiuzhen” Immortal hero in modern-ish times. I really liked it but it has a rather sad ending. I’m waiting for the 2nd season to appear somewhere watchable.

How did the hamster find Wuji in the desert? I know the Crown Prince mentioned it to Fuyao but I’ve forgotten the details.

Sometimes I think I should take notes as I’m watching. I remember him telling her she sent Ingot to find him and that’s what saved his life but I don’t remember if he said anything about how Ingot found him. It must be magical.
