Just finished the finale. I’m 99% sure it was a happy ending in real time. My doubt comes from their being in a perfectly beautiful paradise and there is peace in the world.
It was brief, that’s for sure. Maybe they meant for the ending to be ambiguous and left open to interpretation. I still think it was genuine and not afterlife. Someone said the novel ended with them having 3 kids and I wonder if his comment about her being “heavier” was a hint and reference to that. On the other hand, they’re last conversation in the Hall of Illusion tended to make it sound like they’d see each other in the afterlife, but only vaguely hinted at. On the 3rd hand, their conversation in the epilogue was a bit too real for the afterlife. I keep changing my mind about whether or not it was real.

My hubby said that people were pissed about the ending.
