The pre-release song off Beast’s Midnight Sun album in 2012.Written by Junhyung with Choi Kyu-sung and Shinsadong Tiger. It wasn’t remarkable but it was pleasant to listen to.
No official music video, instead a one-minute and sixteen second theme music video (https://youtu.be/bcZlC6lfLxc) was released together with the song with clips from the “Beautiful Night” MV that was shot in NYC.
But,it was recorded in Japanese and became the group’s third Japanese song, complete with an official MV (https://youtu.be/gvWPiXndy5A).
Like most of JH’s compositions, Midnight speaks of longing for someone. If you like, here’s the lyric video (https://youtu.be/O-YQHcbsxNA). The song had acoustic elements with the guitars and piano but still sounds upbeat.
This is one of JH’s earlier works and looking back, it seems a foreshadow of what his writing and composing style would be – lyrics on lost loved or break ups, music more on the upbeat side and usually no vocal breaks – one member sings and then transitioning almost seamlessly to the next member, vocals or rap with 2 sometimes 3 members adlib-ing,harmonizing after the 2nd chorus.
And like other Beast pre-releases, the song had better peaks on the music charts compared to the official promotional song, “Beautiful Night”.
Most of my favorite concert performances of many Beast songs were in The Beautiful Show 2015 including this. Beast performed an acoustic version of Midnight adding to the melancholy if not longing of the song.
This is what I’ve noticed of JH’s composition,I actually refer to it as “no vocal break” when I talk about his composing style with real life friends.I always wait for who will adlib/harmonize with Yoseob during that part after 2nd chorus.

This is fascinating. I really like how you’ve broken down the song simply. I’ll now be listening to it differently knowing what you’ve told me!
