Must be hard to be an actress. You’re a soft spoken character? You’re dumb. You’re a badass detective? You’re annoying. Ugh. What do you want from them then?
Better written character. Why female detective has to be loud and badass? Why can they be intelligent like Shimok from Forest of Secret or Saga Noren from the Bridge. I remember British series has written many excellent female detectives without kicking ass or being loud.
Soft spoken can be shrewd and conniving too. Lady Mary Crawley was soft spoken, wasn’t she?
I think the problem is in the writing.
I do agree with that. It’s just that some people just blindly hate on characters because they are female. For reference, I was watching Six Flying Dragons and all female characters get crap for basically anything they do. It got really frustrating so I posted this.
I haven’t seen Six Flying Dragon, it is on my list. I will start it after I finish Tree with Deep Roots. The ensemble casts look pretty good for me.
I rarely like female leads in K-drama, their characters are often too comical and ridiculous. I recall the very first female lead that I genuinely like was Dr. Choi Yeun-kyung in ‘Live Up to Your Name, Dr. Heo!’. Before Dr. Choi I never found a female lead who’s smart, brave, outspoken (not brash) but also level-headed. She was very supportive when Dr. Heo have to go back to his time, but she also let herself cried after he’s gone. I wish more female characters are written like her.
Maybe the problem Korean viewers love those soft-spoken/naive or badass/brash characters in dramas?
After two years of regularly watching K-drama, i also learned not to be overcritical about actors’ acting skill. I’m not korean, how do I know how Koreans talk to each other. Every now and then it’s nice we got to see a natural talent like Seo In Guk, but I’m fine with Hyeri or Nam Jin-hyuk if they can work the character.
I just want characters that make sense. But for some reason it’s just really hard to writers to write female characters that make sense. I don’t know what that says about these writers…
It’s almost as if women aren’t allowed to explore and represent the full spectrum of what it means to be human.
I heard someone say women will be ridiculed no matter what they do so we may as well do whatever we want. I thought it was a somewhat liberating way to view a depressing reality.

Then they’d be lik “ew, it’s not bearing flowers” or “I wish that plant would just rot.” OTL
